He knows what’s going to happen, no matter how things progress, fire and blood will be aimed directly at them.

Alicent and Otto knew that he had now just placed them in a war posture and though they weren't sure what would become of them all (the family and Kingdom) they knew that his stupid decision would reep unprecedented death and destruction.
The king and his brother, while intelligent and powerful, lack the experience an wisdom to understand the consequences of their actions.
A wise ruler knows when to fight, run or negotiate. They destoryed their families dynasty with their stupid. One by killing his nephew, the other by celebrating it.

I actually would have loved to have seen the feast. I guess they had to cut down on the budget. lol But having Aemond trying to seem like he purposely did it would have been interesting during the celebration.
Wow. Was Alicent upset because of what happened or because she knew what it meant was going to happen next? She did light a candle in the show, hesitantly but she did do that. I'm giving her a little credit. Otto had a strange way of looking at the situation but he had a strong point. Short sightedness cost the Greens a lot...when they had an early upper hand advantage.
I needed the clarity regarding the matches made by Aemond. That absolutely answers why he made his way to a Strong. I know I'm going to catch heat for this but I'm not even mad at Aegon. Aegon's probably heard all kinds of hate about that eye...for years. Bro, was just tired of hearing it - might as well party, life as everyone knew it was over.

Regarding Alicent, although she did not want Luke killed, was less compassionate in the books. Her and Otto Hightower viewed it as a spark to launch a war that would shatter the realm and end in multiple Dragon's death with the Greens being the target of every Dragonrider of the Blacks.
As for Aegon, he only took the Crown because his mother convinced him that if Rhaenrya took the Throne, she would Kill all her half-siblings and their children. That's why he was so bloodythirsty wgen it came to the Blacks. Thats why he reacted like that in the books. In his mind they were already in a war that could only end with the Extinction of one of their Bloodlines. That's why he was happy with the news of Aemond killing Luke. They were closer in the books, Aegon viewed Aemond as the Champion of the Family

I'm still amazed at how nonchalantly their reactions were downplayed. I do recall Aegon not wanting the position and we can see how Alicent and Otto try to move him around. It's uncomfortable to watch or it could be just me.

@@Anantinfinit Rhaenyra's stillborn daughter occurred before Luke's death. That wasn't even considered as a catalyst for the start of the dance. Rhaenyra went into early labor shortly after receiving news of her father's delayed death notification and the rest of the usurper foolishness. It's a numbers game with heirs. The Blacks were down one, right out of the gate.
For all of Aegon's faults, at least in the books he cared a bit about his brothers (not his sister-wife).
It's the one thing I hate the show has changed, destroying his relationship with Aemond.

I'm still wondering why they cut out Aegon and Helaenas second son, he was the one Helaena picked to die, not the daughter, and they still killed Jaehaerys. But the second son lived longer knowing his own mother condemned him to die, and later it was his own death that likely drove Helaena to suicide while she was locked up. Just endless tragedy.

Aegon is correct. Overwhelming force was their best chance at victory. Eliminating enemy dragon riders should have been their first priority. Once the throne was usurped, war was innevitable.
This just proves that none of the brothers wouldve made a good king. Aemond is too wreckless and ego driven, and aegon is too stupid and inexperienced.

I’m seeing a theme of scheming grandfathers who are also hand of the king whose plans get ruined because they underestimate their families stupidity.

When he killed Luke he looked like he regrets it yet in season 2 he doesn't seem to regret it at all.
Maybe it’s just for appearances, he killed Luke due to losing control of his dragon and he doesn’t want to admit that to anyone so he plays it off as if it was intentional
