- How to replace an a/c clutch on a Chevrolet Silverado without removing the pump!!!
Have you ever thought of just replacing your a/c clutch on your gm truck?
Why would you want to change the a/c clutch, or replace the a/c pump coil on your Chevy or GMC truck?
Well on this particular Chevy Silverado, the coil and went bad and the clutch did not engage anymore. You could also replace the a/c clutch only, if the pulley bearing goes bad.
In this video I'll show you how you can replace your air conditioning clutch while the pump is still installed in the vehicle. That way, you don't have to evacuate the system (remove the gas) and later refill it.
So if you only replace the a/c clutch on your GMC truck or Chevy truck, you will save yourself a lot of money. if you are saving money, you won't have to make money 😉
And after the rad fan and the fan shrouds have been removed, you actually do have some good access to the ac clutch.
If you want the same a/c clutch kit, you can check the link out right here:
a/c clutch kit - amzn.to/47XT6lc
This clutch kit should work for your Chevy Silverado from 2000 to 2008 and till 2009 on your GMC Sierra.

Channel Overview:
In this channel I will show how to repair your vehicle or other vehicles yourself. I will also show you, teach you some trick what to look for at certain jobs and try to explain the best I can, on why I do it the way I do it. You will see links of the most of the tools and the parts, at good quality and reasonable cost, that I am using in the description of every video (It may be not the exact tool or product, but that has the same function. So, it may be just a different brand). If any torque specs or other specs are mentioned in the video, they will also be found in the description. I am a self-employed mechanic myself, with a garage on my property. So here I am recording how I repair and trying to help you repair your customer vehicles and also how to fix your own vehicle and save a lot of dollars. So, every video is intended to be a great ‘Do It Yourself (DIY)’ tutorial to save money.

For anybody needing help with the snap ring in 2024…. A 36mm axle nut socket fits directly over the compressor shaft, allowing you to “press” the larger C clip into place, if you have it “seated” but it won’t get flush in the groove. Great video.
Thank you. 😊
THIS is the absolute best information on this project. It's detailed and descriptive while providing a step by step video you can easily follow. Well done AutoTechWorld.
Thank you so very much. Make sure you leave a like 😉
You explain things very well, completely simple,Thank you!!!
This is an excellent tutorial. It instills confidence. The details are phenomenal!
Thank you so much. That is exactly my goal.
This is one of the best how to videos i have seen in a while. The only other person i has a seen make a video of this quality is Chris fix. Great video man.
Thanks. His videos are good, aren't they.
Bro put the snap rings incorrect
🤷♂️
shut up bro ur here just like the rest of us u dnt know shit
Great video, I'm going to diag my silverado a little more but believe my clutch or coil is the culprit. This video gives me confidence that I can tackle this job. Thanks!
Oh yes, you can do it. Have fun
Well I'm almost done with this project thanks to this video! Man, what a pain that snap ring for the coil is when installing the new coil. I should have invested in a nice pair of snap ring pliers, mine made it pretty difficult. Fought it for about an hour. But just shimming the clutch now. Thanks again
That's an incredible feeling though when you get things done by yourself that seem a bit more complicated eh.
Excellent video. One of the best how to’s I have seen. Right to the point. Excellent video showing everything clearly.
Hey thanks a lot. This was probably the hardest video to make yet, but the least performing. Thanks for watching and leaving comment. God bless you and good luck when doing your clutch.
Great Video! Very informative. This video quality should be used to train people.
That's maybe a bit exaggerated, but thank you. 😊
Great video, I have to do this very job in a few days. I did it once before from underneath but I like this way better. Thanks for a great step by step video.👍
You are welcome. Thanks for watching. I would think to that from underneath it would be more uncomfortable
You just save me some money, sir. Thank you for the video.
You're welcome. That was the goal. 👌
That main bolt snapped inside my compressor idk what to do help please
That's too bad. You'll have to either drill it out, or just get a new compressor assembly.
Probably the best auto DIY video ive ever seen
That is very flattering. Thank you 😊
Great video,
I have a Kia Sportage lx 2015 making noise when AC is on, would it be the clutch too? it still cooling.
Thanks,
DJ
Thank you.
When ac is on and it is noisy, it's most likely the compressor itself. Sorry.
Unless the clutch is slipping.
Nice job explaining everything with detail and explanation on what can and cannot go wrong. Great 👍🏼 job! Thank you!
Thank you and you're welcome.
Did you make that video how to diagnose?
Sorry bud, I have not.
Very descriptive, great videos make it easy to tell what you are doing. Thanks.
Thanks enjoy the work
As others have said this video was wonderful. I wish my time with the snap rings and puller went as smoothly as yours, but all the information was here to get the job done!
Thanks. They can be stubborn sometimes
You cant use the pulley because of the snap ring is holding it from pulling off. This is why the video was edited and the quality was blurry. I tried this, it doesn't work.
Do you mind adding a time stamp so I know when in the video you are talking about? Then could add some info if needed. Thank you.
I hoped this was possible but didn’t think I’d get this lucky. Thank you!
Yes man
What’s the kit called to replace all that
I would just call it an a/c clutch kit.
my 2002 chevy Silverado 2500 HD 6.0 had a bad pully so I thought? and it broke the ac belt. ac on high sounded like a wheel bearing it was loud, so I turned it off the noise went away, I replaced the ac pully and belt, and it seemed find and again the noise came back, and the ac pully was moving erratically, this only seems to happen on 4 or 5 fan speed!
does this mean a bad bearing and or clutch?
The fan speed inside, shouldn't change anything in how the compressor works. It may come on more often, but it should work the same.
I’m looking to get some more info cannot find much online. I have the clutch with the 3 weights on it instead of the 1 solid balance weight on it. Having a hard time finding something that matches the part on the truck. Are there two difference a/c clutches for the 2001 1500? Wanna make sure before I buy the wrong part on accident. I’m buying a complete kit (clutch, pulley, coil) so not sure if it will even make a difference there. If you have facebook or any other social media let me know I can always send pictures.
Just DM me on Instagram. Same name, same profile picture.
Wow, that's pretty helpful. So, one would not need to drain your AC lines for this? I have a 2012 Nissan Maxima (also a 2011 Mercury Milan) but I assume the concept is roughly the same for both
Thanks for watching. I'd think the concept should be close to the same. If you can get to the clutch without removing any hoses, you won't need to drain your ac.
My 6.0 Chevy dually is doing the exact thjnk thing.wilm ne working on it this afternoon.🤝🤝👊👊👊👊👊
Good luck.
How do i hot wire the compressor to check to see if clutch is bad. I bought truck with no belt on ac and guy told me it worked. I put new belt on and still no ac. I checked to see what the pressure was and it reads very high pressure, i think thats because the clutch isnt kicking on or maybe it has to much freon. Any help would be appreciated.
It's just a 2 wire plug at the clutch. Unplug it. Ground one lead and put 12V to the other. If it doesn't work, put them on vice versa. If it still doesn't click, likely your clutch doesn't work. Could also be that there is to many shims in there. So you could check that gap as well.
Great video thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Your welcome. May God bless you
If one has access to a recovery/fill machine, it would be easier to replace the AC clutch with the existing compressor on the bench. Yes, I replaced the AC clutch on my 1988 B2200 truck with the compressor installed. On my 1998 Frontier, I removed a shim to fix an intermittent AC clutch without even removing its drive belt.
Yeah, for the clutch it would be easier
Thank you for the helpful video, I think I can do this. While testing the clutch with the battery, which wire is positive and which is negative? Do I need to run jumper wires to the car battery or can I just use a 9v battery?
I would run wires to the car battery, since you need 12 volts
What brand of clutch did you use.
😂 it will maybe last another year of your lucky... usually by the time the clutch is bad the innards of the compressor is toasted...reseal everything and do it right lol
I have had good luck with just changing the clutch 🤞
Don't replace the *whole* thing....
Did I really mess that up? I'll check on the title, thanks
You really saved my ass on this one. My clutch failed and i was about to spend over $300 on a new compressor alone 😅
I'm glad I saved it. What would you sit on otherwise? Happy wrenching
How did you know it was the clutch that failed?
I'm having a issue with my compressor not kicking on cold.
Trying to diagnose it.
@lanewright1143 I just powered the clutch directly, hotwired it basically. And if it clicks then the issue is on the vehicle side, if it doesn't it is from the connector to the clutch somewheres. Most likely the clutch. That makes sense?
@lanewright1143 my clutch absolutely burned out and started spitting out melted plastic from the magnet. Watched this video and picked up a new clutch from Autozone had that A/C blowing cold the next day! Quick note you Don't have to remove the fan shroud if you have the factory electric fans. Thanks again @AutoTechWorld_DIY
@@SFLdrifterwould this be the same procedure on 2016 gmc sierra ?
What was the tool you used to take the hub out? Where you screwed it in and pulled it off link?? Thanks this video was helpful i have a bad ac compressor bearing and I was going to buy a whole new ac compressor but this will save me a lot more money
Do you mind adding a time stamp of where the tool is seen?
You use it a couple times one of the times was 5:15
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY
It's the puller. It is part of a slide hammer kit.
amzn.to/2KFGuds
My compressor pulley broke off. Hoping I can do it at home
If you got the right tools, you've got it.
Bro a puller doesn’t work because theres nothing for it to grab onto and theres no room. And like someone else said isnt there a snap ring holding the clutch on?
Yes there is. You remove it and then use the puller to remove the puller. It worked for me.
The bearing journals were all scratched up, I didn't want to chance it
Better be safe then sorry.
Hey, great info! I'm wondering if you could help me really quick? I replaced most every ac component about 6 months ago, and suddenly (on the hottest day of the year so far lol) my engine seriously bogs down and the compressor makes a nasty noise, whenever the compressor is engaged/ac button pressed inside cabin. It seems to me it would be the clutch assembly, but I want to make sure it couldn't be an internal failure of the compressor itself, by chance? I haven't yet pulled the belt off and looked at the pulley assembly, just looking to get your thoughts.. Thanks!
Normally, you're a sea pump internals do not move, there are stationary, as long as the AC is off. But when you turn your AC on, your clutch engages and your ac compressor internals start moving. So I would say, it's more likely your compressor.
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY That's what I was thinking, just confirming before I pay to have the gas removed and the effort of actual removal. Thanks, for the help. it's under warranty, so not too bad.
Thanks for sharing this video with us.
Your welcome. Was a lot of work to edit.
Checked under my hood and my compressor unit is the 1 bolt style. Do the steps in this video still apply or should I be looking elsewhere...
I wish I could tell you. I think it is different though.
My man. Layed out just like my 6.0, my compressor clutch came off while driving. Fortunately nothing else was damaged but yeah. Gotta get me this kit and 4 cans of r134a and I'll be set.
THANK YOU
If it's just the clutch, you might not need any refrigerant 🤷♂️
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY no I need it. I evacuated mine thinking it POSSIBLY over pressurized. Didn't work. Tried refilling, failed, realized my truck takes 4 full cans of refrigerant to fully charge, checked my compressor and sure enough, the bolt that holds it all together got too old and did what old bolts do, broke. So I fixed up the rest of the system and am at this stage currently.
Ok. Good luck.
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY thank you
Best video seen..thanks
That's very kind. Thank you.
I just tested my clutch correctly and it works. But your video is best i seen.@AutoTechWorld_DIY
Can't you just add a new shim, within spec's, instead of changing everything to get rid of noise?
If the bearing is bad then no.
Well done with good details and important steps to insure success.
That was the goal. Thank you.
My compressor has what I call hammer starts and keeps breaking belts, but will blow cold once going
I hope for you to get that issue resolved
You openeing the hood latch noise was like a jump scare 😂😂😂
Haha, that's funny. I did bring up the volume for that part when editing. 🙈
Thank you for the very detailed description of how to do this.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Helps with the algorithm. 😂
Very good explain it video. Thank you.
Very kind words. Thank you. And you're welcome.
I replaced it but it keeps on burning out the coil any advice?
Check your AC pressures. Maybe you have excessive cycling of the coil because you don't have the right pressure? That could be one reason. Try it and let me know
Very well explained repair!, Thank You
You're welcome. I tried 🙈
Very good video 👍
My Compressor is noisy when it engages ! could be the ballbearing on the clutch? I changed the tenshiner but no help :(
Thank you.
If it's noisy with the clutch engaged, then it probably is the compressor. If it is noisy with the clutch disengaged, then I would assume it to be the ball bearing on the clutch.
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY Yes that´s correct. Thank you
hello friend I put the compressor. but now it does estop
Maybe you have the wrong shims in? Did you measure the gap? Can you the center piece by hand when the truck is off?
Is there a time where a compressor gets +12V and ISN'T supposed to run? Mine is clicking but clutch doesnt spin. I want to know before buying replacing the clutch
If it gets 12v it should run. I wonder if the clutch is worn and it needs different shims so it would grab. Or the coil is maybe too weak, that clicks but doesn't pull it all the way.
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY my cold stopped working after offroading so I'll guess I got dirt in there or rubbed the wire raw between the plug and pulley
I guess that could cause issues 👍
Thanks for the video. My clutch is still working, surprisingly even though it's crusty as hell. My pulley bearings are actually shot and that's why I'm replacing it.
Alright. Have fun at the job.
How many miles?
@stevenkerwin4041 The one in the video had 238436 miles on it at the time when I replaced the clutch.
Where did you get the clutch from?
I got it from my local auto parts store. Piston Ring
I ordered a new clutch for my 2013 Tahoe. It starts screeching on the first start of the day when engaged and lasts a couple minutes and goes away for the rest of the day.
This job makes me anxious to do, simply of the inside snap ring being hard to see. I’ve watched at least 30 videos so far and I could do it in my sleep. It’s just the ring holding in the coil that ruins it for me.
You can do it. It may take a couple try's, but eventually you'll get it off.
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY I was able to perform this job well somewhat. I used a mirror to help me see the snapping seating. When it came to the coil I was unable to get that snap ring so I ended up just doing the pulley and clutch portion knowing my coil was working fine anyways. I’d like to say my noise is officially gone and my ac still works great. The only negative outcome is I should have put sun screen on
@@austintrevino4861 Thanks for getting back. That's great to hear. Enjoy the quietness 👌
This is a great video for DIYers.😊❤
Thank you.
My clutch is not engaging at all could this be the issue before i spend on a new compressor? My ac was so cold and out of no where the clutch stopped working
It could be that, or it could be a fuse. Make sure all your fuse are good before you start doing anything big. And also make sure your relay works.
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY thanks i will work on that today!
@excdalmt7807 Good luck
Hopefully he never drives with a passenger. lol, no air bag.
What, why you say that?
Oh yeah. Must be driving lots by himself.
Were did you buy that clutch kit. Having a hard time finding one with the wire.
I actually got mine from the local auto parts store. I believe I also added a link in the description for the parts needed.
Amazon sells one for the Tahoe/Yukon/suburban but it has the ground separate and a different plug. I was able to splice in the old wiring pretty easily and it worked out very well. On the old wiring the green was positive and the black was ground
Great video bro, subbed!
Hey, I really appreciate it. Thank you.
Excellent video, well done!
Thank you 😊
What kind of snap ring pliers did you use? I used some cheap harbor freight ones. Struggled a bunch to take them off. Can't seem to install the big snap ring.
I have a set of snap-on pliers. They seem to work fine.
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY I went back to harbor freight and got some that are like channel locks. I was able to get the job done fairly easy with them. The ones I had were those with 3 heads you can swap. Super cheap lol .. thanks for the tutorial, saved a little bit of money and got rid of that awful screeching noise. And added a few tools to the collection for future projects.
Glad it worked out. Comes a lot cheaper than replacing the hole compressor eh
@@iGame2A hell ya that's a win-win... Love those jobs with that kind of outcome
Thank you for great video
Your welcome. I hope it helps
Does this process work if my compressor will not turn at all ( locked up)?
I doubt it. I think there would be something jammed inside of the compressor.
Ok so better replace the whole compressor. Thanks.
I would say so.
Great video. Very well done. If my a/c only blows cold air for about the first 10 minutes do you think it's my clutch?
I'm not sure. Maybe it's low on freon? Or your condenser is Frozen? Kind of hard to diagnose from where I am. I would check your freon first.
Thanks for your help 👍
God bless
My ac makes no noise at all it throws cold air when driving but when at idle it’s not cool but warm cool by changing this would it work it’s a 03 Yukon
It could be just low on freon.
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY so I took it to a shop and the guy told me the the ac compressors pressure was a 30-35 and it needs to be around 40 ish that it won’t work as effectively because it’s not strong enough it would only cool when the rpm’s are high idk to be believe him what do you think what he said was right or no ?
@RICKY-LSX Yes. That sound right. You likely have a leak and is now low. That makes sense.
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY for sure man thanks
@RICKY-LSX You're welcome, God bless you.
You're a true gem. Great video.
Thank you.
Fantastic video. Thanks for your excellent tutorial.
For those with 2wd trucks, this procedure is even easier as the entire thing can be accomplished easily from underneath the vehicle without removing anything but the belt.
Bonus! Thanks for watching.
Did you end up with a vibration when the clitch was engaged after the install?
No I did not. It was smooth just like new. Yours does?
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY yeah.
I think my old clutch was slipping so bad that it was hiding a bad compressor vibration. Either that or I installed it wrong, which is doubtful but possible.
@Neutsie That would make sense to me.
How to diagnose clutch
Awesome
😊
Given the $ of the clutch assembly, and the work involved if ur an experienced or somewhat capable mechanic u might as well just replace the compressor. If u can get a new clutch assembly at a really cheap $ than its a good option
Also, you don't have to worry about the refrigerant as well if you just do the clutch.
My clutch kit was $44 compared to the whole compressor which was anywhere from cheap of the cheap $180 to name brand over $225.... So it's not just that simple my guy....
@@drewskidrankthebrewski4657do you have a website for where you bought the clutch? I can’t find one?
@wannafly85 this is the one you could see me install in the video.
The link to it is amzn.to/47XT6lc
Thanks for watching.
@@wannafly85 I got mine off of amazon
can you do it from below to avoid removing all the shrouds?
I doubt it. Your steering gear and cross member would be in the way I'd think.
Having just done this literally an hour ago, I did it from underneath the truck, but wish I had taken the time to remove the shroud. It can be done, but it's extra effort.
ETA, this was on a Ford F150. Same principle applies.
Ok that's good to know. Haven't done them on a Ford yet. Thanks
What about if the compressor fails and burn the belt when it fails? I have an 08 yukon. Would i need a whole new one or just this kit
I could imagine you need the complete compressor assembly. It's hard to tell without seeing it.
This was an excellent tutorial. Just one question, how long did the project take?
Thank you. I don't remember how long it took me. The book says, it's a 2 hour job for a 4x4 and less for a 2x4.
I used a adjustable 3/8 ratchet with a stub nose extension and you won’t have to take the whole plastic loose from the fan or even remove the fan
Oh wow. You need a very bendable arm though, do you not?
How can I tell if all I need to change is just the clutch? How can I tell my compressor is still ok?
Are you wondering because it doesn't work, you got no cold air. Or because you're ac is noisy?
How do you know it’s the clutch
It's just a 2 wire plug at the clutch. Unplug it. Ground one lead and put 12V to the other. If it doesn't work, put them on vice versa. If it still doesn't click, likely your clutch doesn't work. Could also be that there is to many shims in there. So you could check that gap as well. Do at your own risk.
@AutoTechWorld_DIY whenever i do that with the connector. I can hear my engine rev up like its going to activate my ac but i look down and i see that my clutch isnt spinning. Could it be that everything is working how its supposed to but the clutch?
Do that with everything off. Just connect the clutch straight to the battery with jumper wires. Not to the wiring harness side, but directly to the connector on the clutch. You should here it click. If you don't, it's most likely the clutch. Could also be the gaping between the clutch plate and the pulley.
My Tahoe compressor cools but its noisy and getting noisier i removed the belt, with belt off the pully has resistance but it will turn is that the bearing in the pully?
Does the noise change if the AC is on or off? If it is noisy while the compressor is engaged, then it is inside your compressor. But if it is noisy when you're compressor is not engaged, then it is more likely to be your bearing. Does that make sense?
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY Its noisy when engaged...
@roltyd22 I'm afraid you'll have to replace the complete compressor. Is it fully engaging?
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY Yes the air is cool but getting louder and louder so i removed the belt..also i felt the compressor and was little hot i dont if thats normal or not..can turn it off with truck running its quiet
I would replace the complete compressor.
I am so fed up with this job...was hell taking that big snap ring off....now installing the new big nap ring is just as difficult! WTH!!!!
You got this 💪
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY Thank You! And nope I didn't have it. The big snap ring just wouldn't go on for the reinstall. The new one or the old one. Nothing I did could get it seated in the groove. Yes I made sure the curved beveled edge was facing me, racing the front of the truck when installing and the flat part towards the firewall. I don't know if the two sets of snap ring pilers just did a poor job of spreading the snap ring. I hope to try again tomorrow to maybe find a new snap ring and hopefully get this job finished. I honestly feel so defeated. No project has done me like this especially in this heat too.
