A lot of people do not know about removing one of the shims that come installed from the factory. The outer plate wears and creates a gap too wide therefore not allowing the magnet to pull the plate in. If the plate is wore too much, the heat of the engine will cause the metal to expand just enough to cause the plate not to engage. Did you check the gap prior to diagnosing it as a worn out magnet?
Probably the most important thing you mentioned was to measure that gap between the clutch and the pulley with a feeler gauge. I left that shim out on my last install because I didn't know it was needed and ended up having my new coil burn up. This is the second time I'm replacing it.
It was really difficult to get a measurement on my Dodge Caravan, because the lip of the pulley obstructed the gap. And the electrical connector was mounted in a very tight spot below the alternator with the tab away, I had to grind down the electrical connector where it mounted to a metal tab to get it apart to get at the plastic tab to remove the connector. There was also not much apace for the snap ring pliers. The whole thing was *idiotically* configured.
About 2019 I had intermittent AC clutch slippage on my high mileage 1998 Frontier. I used three 5mm bolts to remove the AC clutch drive plate, removed a shim, and put it all back together on the car; I did not even need to unbolt the compressor, remove the belt, or discharge/charge the refrigerant !!!
Nice job! fyi, if using puller as you have, put a socket (socket OD ~same as bearing ID) on the nose of the compressor housing, and put puller screw on that socket.. That way you aren't pressing on the shaft of the compressor..
The problem is when they tell you YOU NEED AN AC COMPRESSOR. You are like come on man, it's just the clutch, and they will whine and say: it needs works, and we don't if things are going to get "complicated" fucking mechanics bro, 80% of them are shit. Great content, I will try do it myself 🙏
I just finished the job on my 2008 Honda Fit! My old A/C clutch electromagnet had a permanent open in it, so it would not engage the A/C clutch. I do not have an impact, so I held the clutch from spinning with a 24" pipe wrench and used a ratchet to break the nut loose. I did not have a gear puller, so I used my $200 wheel bearing puller kit for rear wheel drive cars. The 10# slide hammer in it had a 3 jaw attachment. The jaws do not have much of a grab notch in them, so it took a few tries, but I got the pulley off. Now my A/C clutch kicks in just like it is supposed to. Thank you so much!
Nice job . but for safety screw the original nut half way then use the puller on it also when installing the new pulley you could use the old pulley as the installation tool for the new pulley .same procedure as using the socket . Nice job man and thanks for the information
I just got rookie of the year by over-tightening the bolt on the shaft with an impact driver and breaking a piece off. Newbies learn from my mistake and buy the a/c clutch holding tool - there's no way I would have broke a piece of the shaft if I was hand tightening!
That hardest part is always what one takes for granted. in my case, a clutch plate that was totally seized (4:23). Before starting I expected the most difficult part of the job will be to get the center bolt out of the pulley, not having room for an impact wrench, but that was easy enough supporting the edge with the end of a flat screwdriver. Eventually penetrating lubricant, time, and tapping the edges with a hammer like a pendulum freed it. Also, use good, strong snap ring pliers. Those rings ain't easy.

Fought it for a couple hours to get it off, and it was an absolute impossibility to get it back on without biting the bullet and buying a good strong 7 inch snap ring pliar. Dear friends : I got S80 Volvo year 2000 2.4L , 5 cylinder Normal engine, I have been face issue with Air conditioning : if you please help me out , My air condition works few minutes while driving if I stop traffic light , the compress stop engage and blow hot air, then again I move and start driving after 30 minutes or more the compressor engage and i get cold air, sometime from climate control the air button is on everything works I took couple of electrician they are not expert for volvos, after research I found either coil of clutch or I dont know if you please help me out ? On my 2014 ford fusion my ac was working at Mcdonalfs drive through then heard sound no more cold air.The bolt holding clutch came off some how and the clutch spun off the shaft.The splines on the shaft got ruined.I put a replacement unit in but want to practice rebuilding the old compressor.Is it possible to get a new splined shaft? I can not find any rebuild kits that have it or the exact name.
Have you ever come across one that doesn't have a bolt holding the clutch and pulley on? It has a hole, and in that hold is a threaded bolt sticking out, but it doesn't have a nut up inside there. It has a tiny metal square at the back of the bolt. It's a 2001 Jimmy GMC. I have no idea how to take this one off since it looks completely different than any of them I see here online. Not sure if that tiny square piece of metal is some kind of snap ring lock or what.

Also had to grind the connector for the old coil with a rasp bit to get it off the mounting tab to which it was seized with rust to be able to get at the pull tab to disconnect it. Needed different snap ring pliers to get out the 2 snap rings, one of which had to be ordered. Took *ages* to get things apart at every step. The configuration was *atrocious.*

I have the same problem as you described, the compressor is not engaging sometimes, however the scanner says Engaged. P1273 code, 2011 Chrysler town country.
I managed to get some vice-grips around one of those three protruding rivet like things on the back of the clutch. It held just fine while I undid the centre nut. Did the same when doing it up.

It is very important to get that air gap correct as per the manufacturer's specifications otherwise all your efforts will amount to nothing. My 04 ford exploder compressor is burning the clutch up. When you turn the ac on the front plate doesnt spin & starts shooting sparks out & smells like burnt clutch. I also noticed the front plate is cock-eyed. With car off, the passenger side of the front plate is slightly touching the pulley & driver's side has a gap. The driver's side gap is where the sparks shoot out. What could that possibly be? I hope it is not compressor & its something in the clutch stuff on front. Any clues?
This was great. Question for you if you have the time, the pressure in our system is good but on hot days the clutch won’t engage. If you tap it while running it will engage for a while. Does this suggest a short as you mentioned?
The faces are probably getting worn. You may be able to take the nut off the face and remove the shim to reduce the air gap. Just know that this is only a temporary fix. Sometimes they last 10K miles this way others may last 75K. Just depends on how much you run the AC. To fix it right, replace the clutch.
Hi, how do you know if the a.c compressor is still good? I tested the clutch and it doesn't engage therefore there is no cold air, however the a.c line still has pressure how can i tell if the compressor is still works?. Please help. Thank you
Great video, thanks. Ohming out the coil won't work in your case unless you let the engine get hot. Sometimes, when you ohm something out, you should put the coil in an oven or chill it in a freezer to check the part over a large temp range. I like to use an amp meter and check the current flow, put the amp meter right there on the dash board and drive it around for a while, watch for any changes.
My 2015 civic si air compressor has been replaced 4 times now in under 2 years. Why? I thought that it was the compressor but after 4 new ones.im guessing it's not. The washer on the outside spins every so often and it smells like burnt rubber in my car when I hear the washer spinning the ac goes out. Then it stops spinning then the. AC works again. What do I need to do ? And what should I tell my mechanic.also...why does it keep happening?

The clearance for the clutch is critical! It can be too great by a few thousandths and the coil will not be able to pull the clutch plate into contact. Found this out the hard way and almost replaced a new clutch because too much clearance wouldnt allow the clutch to pull in.
I bought a non-OEM clutch assembly too. Dealer wanted 400 euro for the clutch kit. I don't know how good the bearing are in this one but. I can always replace it with a better one easily. SKF or something. Since I'm from Sweden I like to use our Swedish SKF bearings of course :) they're on the expensive side sometimes though. Do you know if the splines are same on the compressor axles? No one mention that on the sellers sites. Only how big the pulley are and how many ribs for the belt. In my kit it came with wrong size bolt. So I'm afraid that the clutch plate won't fit. Since it might have wrong size splines or to big hole in the center so my OEM screw does not fit. Maybe I can put in a shim if that's the case. Between the bold head and the plate surface?
Not much good when you can't get parts. Everyone wants to sell you the whole compressor. My 2011 Dakota was squealing when the clutch engaged. I surfaced them on my lathe and it works great now. I had to remove one shim for the right clearance.
Congrats, you also skipped the wiring part, the part that most people are the most interested in. Like any other ac clutch replacement video out there. My wires go over the top of compressor, there is no fucking room to get to them, so i'm also gonna have to cut. But both red and green wires..
The old ground screw would not come out for me on my Civic, I ended up using the nearby M8 head bolt that is holding on a wire hold down. Also i bought new snap rings and shims from my Honda dealer, they are available. The amazon snap rings and shims are not the correct size and thickness.

mine started making noise and i looked at it the cnter nut is gone so i ordered a kit to replace it for 60 bucks....i called around and most shops wanted 300-400 for the part and another 300 for labor and one even insisted i needed a 200 dollar a/c recharge after. why do shops charge obnixiously for parts these days?
Price parts @ retail vs what you can buy them for online. Most shops can't wait 3 days for a part to show to they have to buy retail and push the cost onto you.

I had a damaged clutch and changed to new one.Apparrently, I noticed that the bearing shaft is slightly out of circle and when I rolled it there is a slight movement due to the loose bearing shaft.Im planning to put Locktite 638 to compensate for the bearing movement and hopefully it will work.What do you think? Hello...how about a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander that stops blowing cold air when I'm stopped at a red light or stop and go traffic??? Once I get going, it starts blowing cold air again. REALLY annoying! I have to put it in neutral and rev up the engine when I'm stopped, or I will bake. Freon HAS been properly vacuum and recharged...Any suggestions? Thanks!

Does the belt have to be on in order to take that bolt off? Because I already had taken my belt off. 🤦
My ac pulley is stuck completely making a loud whiny noise. My cold AC and hot air works perfectly fine. I’m thinking I just need a new clutch system??

mine started making noise and i looked at it the cnter nut is gone so i ordered a kit to replace it for 60 bucks....i called around and most shops wanted 300-400 for the part and another 300 for labor and one even insisted i needed a 200 dollar a/c recharge after. why do shops charge obnixiously for parts these days?
Price parts @ retail vs what you can buy them for online. Most shops can't wait 3 days for a part to show to they have to buy retail and push the cost onto you.

My nissan 370z AC only works when its cold or a little cold outside(clutch spins) , but when it gets hot (the clutch wont spin) Could this be a coil problem?
Possibly, the coil could be going open with heat.
You should put the nut on the shaft and press on the nut so you don't mushroom.

I had a damaged clutch and changed to new one.Apparrently, I noticed that the bearing shaft is slightly out of circle and when I rolled it there is a slight movement due to the loose bearing shaft.Im planning to put Locktite 638 to compensate for the bearing movement and hopefully it will work.What do you think? Please advice.Thanks.

Hello...how about a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander that stops blowing cold air when I'm stopped at a red light or stop and go traffic??? Once I get going, it starts blowing cold air again. REALLY annoying! I have to put it in neutral and rev up the engine when I'm stopped, or I will bake. Freon HAS been properly vacuum and recharged...Any suggestions? Thanks!

Shaft seal. You can sometimes replace them, it depends on the compressor. The clutch needs to come off to change it.
My clutch stays engaged even fuses pulled ?🙏
