Remove and Replace AC Compressor Clutch and Bearing Without Removing Refrigerant or Compressor
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 лип 2021
- If your car's AC compressor is making noise, the clutch/pulley bearing likely needs to be replace. On my 1995 Toyota Camry, we replaced the AC compressor clutch bearing without discharging the refrigerant from the compressor or removing the AC compressor from the car. We removed the compressor mounting bolts and repositioned the compressor just enough to be able to remove the pressure plate and pulley to replace the clutch bearing. We also tested the AC compressor magnetic coil and clutch assembly before we remounted the AC compressor to the car.

The absolute best step by step troubleshooting /assembly demonstration I've ever witnessed on UA-cam. Thank you from the public. I hope all other mechanics sharing tips see this.
You're welcome, Glenn, and thank you! That's one of the nicest and most thoughtful comments I've received on my channel. I truly appreciate that you took the time to write it. Comments like yours remind me to show detailed steps in the process of fixing stuff so others feel like they too can tackle the project. Sister says, "Thank you," too!
Very much agree. I was hesitant to do a clutch job myself, but going for it now. No chance I pay a shop to do this when I have a step by step guide.
Very Smart lady! This has to be the best AC compressor repair video I've watched.
Thank you, Chris, for taking the time to say such a nice thing. I appreciate that. ;)
This ended up being for a different vehicle than I was looking for, but I just have to say this is very well done. Nice job ladies, I'm impressed
Thank you, The Geek Side, sister and I appreciated that.
You two just saved me a huge headache! I’m doing this exact thing on my daughters car tomorrow and I doubt I would ever find anything else out there that is more informative and visual. I’ve been looking online for over a week. So glad I found this video. Thank you!
You're welcome, James. I'm glad the video is useful to you, and thank you for the nice comment.
Best DIY a/c clutch replacement video and narration out there. She covers everything in detail. This is a 2 person DIY job.
Thanks so much!
You're welcome, David, and thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and nice comment. Sister and I truly appreciate that. You've made our day! Happy DIYing!
Spot on!! Exact amount of detail without excessive information. Thank you for taking your time to help a fella out. Take care.
You're welcome, Richard, and thank you for taking the time to leave such a nice comment. Your words mean a lot to me. Happy DIYing!
i second that but what kind of vehicle are you working on?
professional camera and lighting, clear instruction. I hate those UA-camrs filmed in the dark and only said 'it is done, a success'.
Thank you, forgetful me, for the thoughtful and nice comment. I hope the video helped you.
great instructional video.....am retired ASE mechanic was looking for a video to show my son how this procedure is performed. good step by step detailed and sequenced instructions on procedure!
Well, hoke, what a nice thing to say. Thank you! Your words carry great weigh, given your certification and experience. I also appreciate that you took the time to leave your comment. Happy DIYing to you and your son!
@@frugaldiy1 your welcomed!
I cannot thank you enough ladies. Appreciate the very thorough tutorial. I just placed the bearing I bought in the freezer. New subscriber here.
You're welcome, navyblu79, and thank you for the kinds words. That was a fun project to work on! Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.
I was actually trying to look for how to do this on my Honda. But you guys were so awesome with everything you were doing I couldn't leave. You guys are EXCELLENT!!!
Really, really nice video. Had no idea you could change the clutch assembly without taking out the whole compressor, and avoid the extraction and refilling of the refrigerant issue. So many useful tips/techniques you shared. THANK YOU. Please do more videos as you do more work on your cars ...LOL!
You're welcome, Noey. And, thank you for one on the most thoughtful and nicest comments I've ever received. You've made my day! Happy DIYing!
I was completely lost and now I know how to fix my car. Well done ladies!
Thank you, Dertro. Sister and I appreciate your comment, and I hope your project goes smoothly.
AWESOME INFO CAMRY VIDEO-your camry a/c clutch bearing replacement video is the ONLY video/Information even that I FOUND on the WHOLE INTERNET /YOU TUBE that Actually TELLS YOU HOW TO REPLACE /INSTALL the A/C CLUTCH BEARING ON TOYOTA CAMRYS from 1992-2001 ...So needless to say.....THANKS SOOOOOOO VERY VERY MUCH!!!
You're welcome, JACKBUD. Thank you for your kind words and comment. They mean a lot to me. Happy DIYing!
I am glad I watched this! I was going to order the whole A/C clutch assembly. I like that this cost less than $20, fantastic video!!!
Thank you, jampskan. I'm glad the video helped you. Yep, it's a cheap repair.
Awesome job! Nice commentary and excellent explanation of work being performed! Great job ladies!
Thank you so much, Eric, for your compliment and kind words! They truly mean a lot to me.
You've made my day!
One of the best How To videos I've ever seen thank you Ladies 👊
D C, you are so kind. Thank you very much for your wonderful comment. Your words mean a lot to sister and me.
I agree with other viewers and this is the best tutorial on how to replace ac bearing. Appreciate your great work to help people like me.
JackM, it's my absolute pleasure to help folks fix stuff themselves and save their hard-earned money. Thank you for your thoughtful words and for taking the time to write them. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones! ;)
Thank you I was gonna take the compressor out until I watch your video 🙏🏾much love from Saudi Arabia
Hi Joe, and much love back for the USA! I'm so glad the video helped you.
Hey yall. One of the best videos i’ve ever watched. Thanks, for sharing. We can tell this wasnt your first rodeo.
You're welcome, Cindy. Thank you for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful comment. Means a lot to me.
Great video, I've never seen anyone torque the mounting bolts on an AC compressor before.
You ladies are thorough! lol
One small tip. Some compressors/alternators have dowel pins to align them to the engine. Cleaning them off and applying anti seeze to the holes will help prevent them from getting stuck and being difficult to remove in the future.
Thank you for both the kind words and the wonderful tip you shared with us and other viewers. We are all learning together.
Good explanation about the shims. I've only recently heard much about them in preparation to work on mine. I caught the drift from other videos, but you explained them in more depth. Thanks!
You're welcome, Jim, and thank you for your nice comment. I appreciate that.
Excellent ladies. I am in the process to overhaul my compressor and was not sure how to remove the bearing. Thanks 🙏
Thank you, Heinrich. Good luck with your project. Have fun!
Great video. Clear communication and no bs. 👍👍
Thank you, Anonymous. I appreciate that. ;)
Awesome step-by-step tutorial. Thank you for sharing!
Ladies, an absolutely amazing and detailed high-quality video on how to I’m a licensed mechanic and I have nothing but praise for your instructional video. Thank you.
Michael, that means a great deal coming from you. I truly appreciate your thoughtful comment and that you took the time to write it. I'll tell Sister you said that and that will make her day--mine too! ;) I can't thank you enough.
Now this is real shade tree mechaning by two knowledgeable ladies. If you two can do it anyone can do it.
Very nice job on the video👍You provided much detail for performing this task.
Briliant tutorial ladies! Very clear, detailed and informative. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much, and you're welcome. ;)
Great video! I was never bored and it easily held my attention. My car needs a coil, which i couldn't find (salvage yard, no thanks), so i had a nearby shop replace the entire compressor $983.15...ouch😮
Thank you, Angus. That's kind of you to say. Yep, ouch, on the cost. Sorry you had to shell out that cash.
Thank you for this so informative video. I was able to replace the AC compressor clutch without the need to bring to the shop to remove the refrigerant. My 1997 Camry has rusted bolts that I could not remove the lower bolt of the thermostat housing. I was afraid to force it because before doing it, I broke the adjusting bolt of the fan belt due to so much rust. I moved the compressor to the best position I could aware of not to let the wirings to the magnetic coil rub with the thermostat housing. Because I have no one to hold the tongue and plier while removing the 10mm center bolt, I used a vice grip and clamped tight a portion of the pressure plate to prevent it from rotating. I positioned its handle against the wall (see the photo). By hammering the handle of the torque wrench, I was able to remove the center bolt. The other harder one was the removal and replacement of the snap ring because I could not see clearly the holes where I should place the tool. My cellphone camera guided me to that. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN, MY CAR IS COOL AGAIN.
BRAVO! Well done, my friend! I'm impressed with your ingenuity and dogmatic approach to the project. YOU don't give up and that's impressive and rare. Much respect! Wait til I tell sister; she'll be impressed too. I just love people like you who find a way to achieve the task at hand and improvise. I'm over the moon that the video helped you and got your Camry cool again. What and awesome story. Thank you!
Thank you to you two professors, from UA-cam university for this classroom instruction! Very informative!
Thank you, Thomas. You made my night. Professor Frugal ;)
Great video. Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. It cleared a few things I did not know where to start: using the pliers to lock the pressure plate. Others activate the magnetic clutch from the dashboard, unscrew the 10 mm bolt, turn it off and continue. However, that approach only works if the magnet is good, mine was damaged so your approach works best.
One comment though: when using the extractor, it is very important to use the cup to support the extractor bolt on the compressor case, and not on the compressor shaft. Putting axial pressure on the compressor shaft "could/might" damage the compressor. If the pulley comes out easily, likely no issue, but if the pulley is very stuck the extra pressure is not good for the shaft.
Thank you, Juan, and thank you for the valuable info you added. It helps us all. Happy New Year!
Excellent video. Well done by professionals
wallacetom1, I truly appreciate your kind words. They mean a lot to me. A little bit of determination and a Toyota shop manual, and you can't go wrong. :) Happy DIYing!
These ladies are God sent.
What a nice and generous demonstration! I already love them..❤❤❤
God bless you for this wonderful video.
I have exactly this problem in my Toyota Premio 265 yr 2009. We removed the sarpentine belt. AC OFF, engaged the gear, no rattling. Switched the AC ON with the belt removed, slight rattling. Put back the belt, AC ON, engaged the gear, more rattling sounds.
Thank you, Dennis, for taking the time to leave such a nice and thoughtful comment. It means a lot to me. I'll pass it on to Sister, and it will make her smile. Merry Christmas, Sir!
@@frugaldiy1 for real, I wish you were here in Kenya. You could have repaired this AC for me. But I have saved this video on UA-cam. We will watch it together with my mechanic before commencing the repairs.

@@frugaldiy1 Yes indeed.
Well I haven't put it together yet (waiting for my bearing to arrive) but it should be OK.

You're welcome, Alfred, and thank you so much for the nice comment. I hope the video helps you with your AC.
This video will certainly help many people and very informative. My only concern was the price you paid for the bearing. There are many knock offs out there. So buyer beware. 👍
Very nice video. Not too technical but very informative !!
Thank you, Dennis.
I learn a lot from this video thank you

Thank you, paul. That's a nice thing to say. Re the local shop, yep! You see you can DIY and save a bunch of your hard-earned money. The parts are plentiful.
@@frugaldiy1 I have a garage full of tools, It just chafe's my hide when people lie to me. And why? a good mechanic could prolly do this in an hour, or less and not need to go through all the hassle of changing out a compressor. and now losing a customer's trust.
I agree 100%, paul. That's why I fix my own stuff. At my age, close to 60, I've fixed enough stuff and been ripped off enough to know better and have no patience for it. Every person in every profession can earn money the honest way, but few do. They're out there, for sure, but hard to find.
@@frugaldiy1 ever watch South Main Auto?
Eric O is an inspiration
No, I haven't. Thank you for telling me about the channel.

A few years ago I removed an AC clutch shim to repair my 1998 Frontier AC without unbolting or removing the compressor (AC clutch was slipping, intermittently). I didn't even need to remove the AC belt !!!
Were you able to order the correct bearing prior to disassembly or did you have to get the bearing part numbers off the old bearing? My Denso compressor is a 10A15C

Step by step process, thank you so much for explaining it very detailed I didn’t know how to do this job but thanks to this video and for sharing your knowledge now I know.
Definitely I will marry you 😉
Antonio, I have complete confidence in you that you can do the job well! As to the marriage proposal, the last guy who proposed to me on this channel, called off the wedding the next day because the pilot light on his water heater went out again the next day. Bummer! I'm still getting over that. LOL ;)
What a great Tutorial. 👌 So many good tips along the way as-well.
Although i snapped the bolt on mine 😅. I'm wondering if it was red loctite on there or, the way i clamped it with plumber grips.
Anywho. Subscribed !😁
Thank you, Pro choice, for the kind words. I'm sorry to hear the bolt snapped on you. That's tough to deal with. If it had snapped on us, I would have gone to Pick-n-Pull, a salvage yard, and just pulled an entire AC compressor, rebuilt it (internal seals too) and put it on the car.
I love this video
Thanks for this 👍🏼
