Great review, Greg! Been browsing around for this monitor a lot recently. Most reviews speak of the same things over and over. Yours on the other hand, made it more personal. So, thank you for pushing me closer to this display purchase to pair with my MacBook!
Update, My Studio Display blew up yesterday, belching smoke for 6 minutes before a final loud bang. Only lasted 18 months, very scary failure and I did get it on video. Posted pictures of the failure on my community tab and what to look out for before this failure. I can't post a video because I now have no display
For several years, I've gone through 4K monitors (BenQ, Lenovo, Dell) and often find myself longing for something better. I waited for a while and finally came upon an Apple store refurbished Studio Display with VESA mount ($1699 CAD = $1246 USD). I have an adjustable height desk and the range of motion of my other monitor stands is never enough (hence why I opted for VESA). I also found the Herman Miller Jarvis arm on sale ($139 CAD) and finally found the ideal setup for me. Beyond the specs (no HDR, no local dimming zones etc.) the ASD is one amazing monitor. The backlight bleed is minimal (when compared to other monitors I've used). The text is crystal clear and the colours and images match exactly those displayed on my M1 iPad Pro and on my iPhone 15 Pro. Higher refresh rates aren't important to me personally and besides, when looking at the specs of Thunderbolt 3/4, there's no way Apple could've transferred a 5K signal at 120Hz. Even though HDMI 2.1 could handle that, Apple set out to build the one cable solution for the Mac. Gamers wouldn't consider a Mac or this monitor to begin with, so why pander to them? I don't understand Greg's talking points on the web cam and how the ultra wide used would show the rest of his workspace. In MS Teams (or other software) you could either blur the background or put some kind of background image, thus problem solved. No one will ever get to see your mess on a videoconference. But if you truly want a great image out of a webcam, then use your iPhone instead. Belkin adapter sells for ($49 CAD = $35 USD) and can be mounted on the Studio Display.
I bought the Mac Studio and studio display. I returned the Mac Studio because i got choppy audio play back in davinci and dead pixels on my camera video. And it wasn’t importing files in davinci resolve. But I kept the Studio Display because it works well with my 2017 iMac and Razed Blade 15.
I did get the base model also. Good point in the color grading part with the Nano Texture option. It doesn't quite make sense. When doing critical grading work, you should block off any windows or turn off unnecessary lights around you. The height adjustable stand is nice to have but with the steep price, you could skip it and be perfectly happy with the stand it comes with. Just put the monitor on top of a couple of books if you really need to adjust.
No issues there for me. My unit seems to be very solid in terms of backlight consistency. ( I have heard other people say there’s are worse but again no issues for me)
@@gregtockner ah great. Thanks for your feedback on it. I’ve been considering getting it or an M3 iMac. I have a Mac Studio so weighing up whether it would be better to go for the larger display.
@@gregtockner haha relax man, what I like the most about the video is how raw it feels. You spoke about what came to your mind and it felt like having a conversation with a good buddy. hope youre doing well man! Keep doing a great job!

Can I use Apple Studio for music production?
I would love to have you’re setup ❤
Great video, how’s the edges in terms of consistency? I’ve had monitors that sort of slightly dim in the corners.

@@ottobyte I mean if you already have the Mac Studio I would definitely go for the Studio Display
