That's exactly what it is, in order to make it as minimalist as possible they included everything into the monitor itself. it does look cool and it weights quite a lot, but it also eliminates all the clutter around you and your desk.

I bought the studio display when it first released for my M1 Max MBP, Honestly one of the best displays I ever owned.
Sadly sold the display as I use my PC more than my MacBook post-covid.
If you have the budget, use a MBP and need one heck of a monitor there's nothing like the studio display.

    1) The BenQ has VESA mount. You could just have bought another foot or a wall mount.
    2) There can be reasons why some monitors are thick, like for extra cooling. Heat can affect the image on the display.
    3) The nits output has nothing to do with your monitor being accurate or not. It's the coverage of the color space you are working in, as well as the contrast ratio. If you are editing Rec.709, in a dark room, the monitor must be calibrated to 100 nits. If there are lights in the room, you can go ´higher, like 140 nits. If you need to higher than that, you're sitting in the wrong room.
Even if you're color grading HDR, 400 nits can be enough, as long as the contrast ratio is fine. The first Hollywood HDR movies, were color graded on very low output monitors. But they were color accurate, and havd a high contrast ratio.
And did you even color calibrate the BenQ?
    4) A monitor cannot affect the performance of a computer. The computer just sends out a signal and doesn't care if the monitor can display it or not. It's like saying your racio receiver can affect the radio station.
    5) Retina is not a resolution. It's a pixel density. And odd scalings in MacOS will have next to no impact on the computer. The scaling only affects the UI and text, not the software itself. I don't remember when scaling was intoduced in Windows. But it has never affected the computer at all. Windows doesn't use integer scaling.
    6) You are comparing a $800 monitor, to a $1600. There are lots of great 4K monitors on the market, in that price range. Some are better than the Studio Display, others are not. It depends on your needs and workflow. As for pixel density, ther is of course a truth to it, but no one can see the pixel density between a 32" 4K or 6K, let alone on a 27" 4K vs 5K. Not at a normal viewing distance.

I could be wrong here but I think the display is 60 HZ because the thunderbolt ports on the M-Series Macs have not the capacity to support more than 5K-Retina 60 HZ output. Just the very new M4 Macs with thunderbolt 5 can do this.

Photographer here, still using a 27" Thunderbolt Display with my M1 Pro MBP. There really isn't anything out there that compares with the 5K Studio Display. I'm just gonna save up and get the Studio Display. I can get it new from Apple for $1400 with my Military/Veteran discount. I wish the Studio Display had more Thunderbolt ports to daisy chain my Thunderbolt devices, but then again, my Thunderbolt RAID drives are now attached to my 2013 15" MBPr that's doing server duty now in my garage, so its not a dealbreaker.

The daisy chain is one thing that affects me as well, it’s a pain to run another cable to the other side of the desk but not a deal breaker. Knowing Apple ecosystem, I don’t think they would allow other manufactures to daisy chain to the Studio Display, but there is always hope !

For anyone looking for a 27” retina monitor you can buy a used iMac and enable Apple’s “universal control” even on Macs and iPads as long as it’s a late 2015 running Ventura. I found iMacs $200 for late 2015 to $700 for 2020 i9. Now one keyboard and mouse controls my 3 27” iMac monitors with network file sharing with a few easy clicks. Not only that it splits the load since each processor is running separately. One drawback is you have to work entirely on the next screen if you constantly switch between apps like Ai and Ps. But you can run both in the center most powerful iMac as I mostly run Bridge and browsers on the two outside iMacs. It’s super cheap between $600-$2100 and absolutely amazing to have 71”/15k of retina screens 🤩🤩🤩. You just need a bigger desk 😂

I needed a bigger monitor the 14" MBP is nice but to small for work on DAWs. Like you I read a lot of reviews and watched quite a few YTs. Seems that people said non-Apple monitors are okay, but if you want high definition you need the 5K of the Apple Studio Display. I've had my Apple Studio Display about six months and it is great the detail is better than my 27" iMac. The built in speakers really surprised me how good they are, no not good enough for my audio work, but for just general listening they are excellent. Yes, the Apple Studio Display is expensive, but it is 5K not 4K is designed to work with Apple video card and the result is worth it.

Yes you do. I have a 14" MBP also, really nice with 1TB SSD. But I spend 90% of my time on the Mac Mini hooked up to two 27" 4k monitors. Strictly a productivty screen-space reason.
I'll give you the honest skinny. I got my two LG 27" Ultrafine as a pair for $300 for both, off craigslist. And it's not bad. It's quite good for everything except if I'm doing super-excellent graphic editing / color accuracy / that kinda thing. But 2 for $300 vs. 1 for $1600, don't get me wrong. If I'm richer I'd have two Apple Studios. I go to Apple Store and I can see the difference.
But if you're in the MBP world of having one main screen that's 14" then yeah, you need at least one big monitor to plug into. 4k gets you 75% as good for 1/3 the price, but if that extra 25% matters then go ahead and pay 3x because it will deliver that extra 25% no question.

It’s about time Apple makes promotion the standard for all Apple Displays. Look at Microsoft surface laptops 7, even the 15” is a high refresh rate compared to the Macbook 15. Seems weird to still have this monitor stuck on 60mhz. Yeah, gaming might not be a thing for many Mac owners, yet Apple keeps telling us especially after the M3’s ray tracing abilities Mac can game too. Promotion just feels smoother. It’s not a major difference but still in 2024 60mhz 5k monitor seems a bit antiquated compared to many other monitors. I still agree it’s perhaps the best choice for a Mac other than Apple’s Pro XDR which is overkill and too expensive for most people.
