Spot on. I have watched SO MANY reviews and you reminded me what Apple sold me. Not a monitor but an experience. EVERY Apple product is about user experience - from function to form to performance. If I wanted a decent monitor, I'd buy an Ultrafine 24 or 27. But when I crank up spacial music. Or use the speaker phone connection while on a conference and it's blocking out background noise. Or, using webcam that follows me around. That's experience. Is there anything that disappoints me? Yes. Why can't we have two Thunderbolt ports?
@@RaZziaN1 Been around long enough to go the way of 3rd-party Apple wanna-bes. Bottomline. Always ended up disappointed with the product, the support, and the updates. From monitors, to clone-macs, and so on.
This monitor should have been priced at $1000 and been the "affordable" option, and Apple should have come out with something in the $2000-2500 mid range. You could have had an entire 27" iMac computer for the price of this thing alone. The fact that it uses a basically identical panel to a 7 year old iMac design with slightly cranked up backlight is no engineering feat. It's overpriced for what it is.
It's just a few hundred quid more than the LG, yet has WAY more functionality (and style). It's good value as is. It has a good USB hub, it can charge your laptop, it has a good camera with Centre Stage, it is brighter than the LG (just), it has way better speakers. A lot of extra stuff for little extra cash. I've ordered a few. For me, the one real negative is the price of the height-adjustable stand. They need to find a way to allow height adjustment for less than that.
@@paganizondar1295 It's a completely different beast. It's only 4k in a display that's way larger. So it's not retina. Retina ain't cheap. If you're prepared to forego retina, then yes, there are LOADS of options. If you want it, then there are basically none other than the shit LG that Apple has been selling.
One advanced feature for multi-studio display setups that I would like to see are the speakers and microphones be turned into a single array and tied into a home pod pair to provide 5.1 audio. The other feature I think should be possible is to expand the cinema stage effect using both monitors in a facetime call.
So we used to get a well designed well built 27” 5k monitor with an entire computer and a keyboard and a mouse with speakers and a webcam for $1800 and now we get the same display with no computer or mouse or keyboard for $1600 and it’s worth it why?
To be fair for Apple, I always thought the 27inch 5k iMac was a bargain compared to other apple lineups. But still, I wish they sold the new studio display for like 1200 USD or something
Because you can keep it and use it with multiple computers over multiple upgrades or use multiple displays with a single computer… I like having separate components. As for the keyboard/mouse thing that has always seemed weird to me… is this your first and only computer? I have plenty of keyboard/mice laying around
Whoa whoa, y’all apple shills really gotta chill out. The display is good, but 1600 for a decade old technology in a new shell and not one of you at least take one step back in disgust is exactly why apple gets away with this.
We are not all apologists like Greg. I love Apple stuff in general, but sometimes they pull d*** moves and this monitor is one of them. The 5K 27” iMac was one of the best values in computing. Not only was it legitimately one of the best large monitors you could buy, it included an excellent computer to boot! Although the studio display has some upgrades, none are significant in terms of the display tech. Better speakers and a (hopefully) better webcam experience? One would expect that in a new iMac update for the same price as last year’s model. But this isn’t an iMac. It’s a large monitor that looks the same as an iMac but doesn’t have mini led, doesn’t have 120hz, doesn’t have HDR… oh and doesn’t have a computer. It is a cynical product designed to force those of us who want a 27” Mac experience to spend more money purchasing two products (this monitor and a Mini or Studio) rather than a single iMac. Priced as it is, this is a money grab and it is not a good value. Apple usually makes great stuff, but sometimes they stick it to the consumer and this is one of those times.
@@ryanw8664 you are spot on. The iMac was the main reason I got into apple products back years ago. The display was absolutely gorgeous, the way it could handle the workload was amazing. Apple purposely skipped the 27 iMac to sell the impatient a similar experience. I myself had to stop my hand from clicking on buy. Not sure if it’s our current situation economically or I’m older, but it didn’t make sense to buy. The more you think about it, the more you realize this is a gimmick by apple to try and get as many gullible people as possible. That’s it. Period. People are going to be in for a hell of a regret once the 27 comes out. And that’s the main reason why I’m asking others to really think outside the marketing box and stop listening to these UA-camrs. They literally make money by advertising apple products, they’re incentivized to do so. They get the review units sent to them, they over hype the system, then they make a video with some shit like “3 months with X, why I returned X”.
@@purplekrakenyut I'm not so sure there is a 27" iMac coming. If it does, expect a big price jump. The 27" iMac used to start at $1799. There's no way it's going to be only $200 more than this monitor, or this thing looks like a bigger joke than it already does.
I totally agree with you. I finally decided to purchase the display for the same reason of having a nice all in one display I can use for work that won't clutter up my desk. I will have to say it is well worth the money. Expensive price point I will admit. They could have made it cheaper, but still worth it. The sounds feels like I have a HomePod sitting in front of me when its not even half volume. I listen to music on it just for the beautiful sound. I would refer this review to those who are considering buying the studio display.
I would have LOVED a 24” version for $999.. I would have picked 2 of them up for an awesome dual setup. And with Apples integration, they could have made them function as a stereo pair where each monitor controls L-R channels!
A wild theory here: perhaps the Studio display was initially designed to be the new 27" iMac? But an inability to meet specific price points made Apple turn it into a standalone monitor instead. Looking at its odd build and engineering choices, this actually begins to make sense.
Greg. I love you man. But you gotta try to call out Apple sometimes and not always talk yourself into loving everything they produce. You had it right the first time. This monitor is a poor value and a middle finger to the Apple consumer. The 5K 27” iMac was one of the best values in computing. Not only did it legitimately have one of the best high-resolution large monitors you could buy, it included an excellent computer to boot! 7 year old iMac display without the iMac for $1599 😂 we can try and justify this all we like to make ourselves feel better but deep down we know this is madness lol
@@juraj_b Lmao seriously? 600nits brightness isn't that great. Its 100nits more. When you consider its $1600...I mean you've traded a fully functioning computer for 100 nits extra brightness. Be honest with yourself its a fat ripoff.
They're not the same display. Max Tech compared it to the $1300 5K LG and there's a noticeable difference in contrast, brightness, and reflections. The Studio looks MUCH better than the LG 5K. Apple didn't just take the iMac and added in some speakers and an A13 lol... Now, is it worth it comparing it to a $700 LG 4K display? Probably not, but it's very misleading when you say they didn't change anything even though they're literally using a way better screen underneath lmao.

Dude I just picked mine up and I'm LOVING it. Was previously using an LG 5K2K and started hating it (too wide, weird scaling + colors and low brightness). I sold my 5K iMac last year and grieved haha... glad to have it back, at least in a sexy looking, super bright and relatively affordable package! Ofc, I'd love a Pro Display XDR, but this will have to do until the second gen comes out. I don't wanna spend $5K on a display that could be updated within a year or two haha.
But they aren't. They are selling it cheaper with the equivalent of an iPhone 11 CPU in it, a TB hub and much improved speakers. Its not for everyone, but lets at least try to tell the truth!
@@MichaelGGarry I was really trying to point out the hubris Tim Cook shows at each launch event. This monitor doesn't innovate, and yet it's taken them a decade to produce something to replace my creaking old Thunderbolt Display (with fewer ports and not even a single thunderbolt out). It feels like too little too late.
@@lordlucan529 Again, I agree 100 percent. Own an Apple 27-inch Cinema (none thunderbolt) display which, has the same resolution as your thunderbolt display. The "Studio Display" is not the tech, I have been waiting for over a decade to see from Apple in a stand alone monitor priced below $5,000 (smile...smile).
@@transitengineer I've bought one of the new studio displays, as eyesight issues mean I need a sharper display, but my old Thunderbolt Display has a network port and thunderbolt port in use - I can dongle the network port but the thunderbolt port will have to be connected to my MacBook Pro every time I move it. I think this shows the lack of clear thinking at the top of Apple - the USB ports on the new display are likely superfluous for non laptop users, but laptop users in a studio (professional environment) are likely to be using at least wired Ethernet and possibly thunderbolt storage / audio devices. The hub on this display doesn't service those users needs. All I can read from this is that Tim Cook is a bean counter that doesn't understand how devices are really used, but loves to cut the price of devices at every opportunity.
Well, I had my doubts. I was hesitant. In the end, though, I bought one, mostly because of your review. I’ve had it a month now, and I’m glad I bought it, it was worth every penny, and then some. Thanks for your great review!
I think the main point of contention is that this is the same price of an iMac but lacks the entire computer with it! This is not better than the Eve spectrum display that costs half as much (4K 144hz, brighter, and color calibrated).
Sadly 4K and 5K aren’t nearly the same thing. 4K screens are really not good monitors unless they’re small (around 21”) or really big (around 42”). Other sizes are just not great due to the DPI.
The Eve Spectrum display is tough to get, I ordered the 4k, and it was supposed to ship the same month. So I paid the reservation fee, 2 weeks later they asked me for the full amount. Then I got no updates for a month, then they told me it is delayed another month. I was just done and canceled my order. They were really nice on the refund, but they lost my trusts. I will likely order it when Spectrum has 3-5 days shipping.
I wish Apple would make a version of the audio display without speakers, a webcam, or that A13 chip, that came in at $300 less. For someone like me who loves multi monitor setups it feels like I’d be paying extra for features I’ll never use. Either that or Apple needs to push out software to let all the monitors act as one massive speaker
I don't agree. I've been waiting to replace my Thunderbolt display for years. But the studio display is a bad value, IMO (especially relative to the 27" iMac they used to sell). Most normal people need some height adjustment, so this is a $2200 monitor with tax. You can buy a Macbook Pro with pro-motion and mini LED for that price. It's expensive and lacks features that are in nearly every other high end mac screen. iPad pro, Macbook pro, iPhone Pro. It's a larger screen, but it doesn't give me confidence to purchase when I have devices with better screens and I'm paying more money for this one. If youre happy that apple actually gave us a monitor that's affordable to the average person, that's too low of a standard. It's not a good value at all, IMO. And I love apple and need a monitor.
because the imac came with a computer so the value proposition was better. you also could choose stand or vesa after so that versatility for future use added to the value proposition.
Just purchased a Dell U2720Q. I was already hesitant with the Dell's price($600), but I would've paid the the Apple Tax if the Studio Display was around ~$1000. $1600 just doesn't make any sense for the same basic 5K display. 4K displays have come down in price considerably; there is no reason for a 27" 5K display to be just as expensive now as it was 6 years ago. 4K, even scaled to look like 1440p on both Mac and Windows, still looks great. If anyone is curious I have a M1 Pro 16" MBP that I think is worth every penny. The Studio Display on the other hand seems way too expensive for what you're getting.
I agree 100 percent. Also, I am in the "same boat" with an Apple 27-inch Cinema (none thunderbolt) display which, has the same resolution as your monitor.
8 months ago I would have strongly considered it but now that I’m used to the miniLED in the MacBook Pro I just can’t. For a large screen to plug into I have my LG C1 and I’m super happy with the combo for now
That sounds interesting. I have a 40 inch Tv on my desk as a monitor at the moment but it’s too big and the lack when moving the mouse is very distracting. How do you cope with a C1 on a desk?
@@travelly1 I have the Platform desk from Output (I do video production with some music production as well), so the C1 is on the slightly raised section at the back of the desk, which is close to 4 feet away from my eyes. It works for my use case but I wouldn't recommend that size TV (or an OLED panel) if you plan on using it to type up documents/code/spreadsheets/email etc.
My toughts and why I'm not getting one: 1) 27 inch it's too small for a "studio" audience, they should have gone for at least 32 as in the XDR. 2) The webcam still sucks, I'm not sure what the A13 bionic is doing. 3) This is not an innovator product. Sure, it was something longer wished by apple users, but I will wait for a mini LD 120herts/promotion version, even if it wold cost more, same is valid for the XDR. Actually, speaking of displays, I'm wondering what is next for the pro display XDR, it needs a refresh urgently.
“I was struck by the design of the device” - really mate? $1600 and this design impresses you? The stand is not height adjustable. It has a small degree tilt up and down and won’t let you tilt at all side to side. Oh yea the monitor isn’t VESA compatible either, not that it matters because the mount is not removable anyways. You also conveniently left out the BIGGEST DESIGN FLAW WITH THE MONITOR. You can’t unplug the fking power cable. God forbid you have a pet that chews your cable. Or a sibling/coworker that is careless and causes damage to it. Guess the whole monitor is fucked unless you have AppleCare (lol of course) and have to spend I don’t even want to know how much getting it repaired. This also means I have to take the entire monitor into an apple store and wait days for them to fix it. Yea 10/10 design. Why make a power cable removable and easily replaceable like 99% of other monitors out there.
Other reviewers: this is old technology that was included in an old product for way more money that doesn’t include bonus features like HDR. Your justification: know that if apple actually did any of that they would have charged way more money than it currently is. Dude what? It’s literally more expensive for a display that is 100nits brighter but doesn’t have an entire fully functioning PC built into it.
Good review. I went to look at one of these in the Berkeley 4th Street Apple Store. They had one right up front by the full wall of glass that is the front of the store, and it was a bright, sunny day. The brightness and contrast of this display (I was looking at the standard glass version, not the nano-textured glass version) performed exceptionally in that extremely brightly illuminated space. The build quality is exceptional, and it looks great. I tend to agree with you that I'm likely to keep a display like this for several years, many five or more years, and not having a plastic piece of crap all that time does mean something to me.
I originally ignored the studio and went with a cheaper alternative. Last month I caved in and bought the studio display with height adjust AND nano texture. If you have Mac workflow, it's the best display for most things. As well as creative hobbies on my personal Mac mini (design and video editing) I use a MacBook pro 9-5 for my job, conf calls, excel, slides etc and the built in webcam and insane speaker quality actually makes webinars and video calls so much better. My only frustration with the height adjustable option, is that the lowest isn't low enough. Could have increased the height range in my opinion. But yes, the speakers are that good. Holy shit they are that good.
Yes, I just bought one 3 days ago and my only huge gripe for now is that the height cannot be lowered enough. That’s what I really needed it to do. If Apple is going to charge $400 for an adjustable stand then that stand adjustability should have adequate vertical range.
@@nermaldigital You know, I never thought of that. I bet that you are likely right about that. It seems so odd that they limited the lowering of the display so much with the stand.
@@Greego apart from the lowering issue, it's bloody excellent isn't it. I mean it should be for the price. I use it mainly for work and conference calls but when I do get to use for watching movies, design and photo editing, it just works flawlessly
Glad you covered the speakers, because I think they’re a huge bonus with this display. It’s my belief that the thickness of the display has nothing to do with the screen or chip. I believe Apple is using the chassis to propagate more sound waves, and add depth to the bass.
Just another useless gimmick to throw in to try and justify the price. The VAST majority of people using this display will also use standalone speakers or headphones while working with it. $30 Logitech speakers off Amazon sound better than the built in ones.
@@757Bricksquad They probably don’t. $100 ones most likely will. To be honest though, I don’t give a puck about the built-in speakers, cameras or CPUs. Just give me a BETTER PRICE or a BETTER SCREEN. $1600 is a steep price tag for what this monitor is (in 2022).
@@RabianskiT Steep? This display is nothing short of a ripoff and god awful reviews like this will actually convince some poor saps to buy the thing. Luckily this knob only has like 200k subs while people like Linus and Marques have over 10 million.

Bought 27" iMac five years ago for AU$2,700. That was at the top of my buying range. Now the cheapest mac mini plus studio display in AUS is AU$3,500. Ridiculous! I won't be buying it!
I disagree, I think other than the looks, the functionality of this display is really overrated. For the price it makes no sense for most people, even if they like it in theory.
Considering the iMac Pro used the same display and was $4999, I’d say the Mac Studio M1 Max and a Studio Display is a bargain. Especially since the M1 Max runs circles around the iMac Pro base model.
Nice review, thank you. I got one, and I love it. It replaced my 4K 32' Dell U3219Q, and my desk looks so much better, now that I retired a separate camera, phone, and speakers (I spend a lot of time in calls). Oh, and I love the actual screen. I still have a U3219Q as a secondary monitor and it is almost unpleasant to look at by comparison (looking at the Dell IS a bit like being at a dentist office;). Couldn't be happier with my purchase.
Nice video, I still use the older 27 Thunderbolt Display & 24 Display the look fantastic their amazingly and made well great design is phenomenal, and I still have $ left in my bank!
The XDR display supposedly will limit brightness if the panel gets too hot. Even with its design, that says a lot. I don’t think a 1000 nit panel will fit in Studio Display unless there is active cooling.
You can buy a refurbished 5K iMac for $1299 instead to use as your monitor. Plus it comes with the magic keyboard, Magic Mouse, and a lightning cable for charging them.
Loved your review. I just purchased this monitor with a Mac studio for all the reasons you gave. I wanted one monitor that had everything in it. I agree that this monitor is a little pricey and wish for this price they would have put a better webcam in it. Because if it’s true that the 27” panel is just bringing out the flaws in the cheap webcam, that’s a problem I don’t think software can fix. Hopefully they can because I expect better from Apple. I think the difference in build quality alone is worth the extra $200 over the LG monitor, but that’s just me. I haven’t gotten mine yet, but I am eager to use it.
I am watching your video on a 2011 Apple 27 Cinema Display. It has a 2.1 sound system which still works fine same as the monitor itself. The camera is working fine and I surely recognize my Face-time pals -:). In the last 11 years all electronic products improved tremendously while getting cheaper. Just consider the Mac Mini M1 in price and performance. Based on this development the Studio Display is a great product but most likely over-priced. Time and sales will tell....
I completely agree 100 percent. I am also, watching this on an Apple 27-inch Cinema (none thunderbolt) display which, I picked up many years ago used for $450 and it works, just like it is still band new (smile...smile).
I think the bottom line is essentially this (my opinion, YMMV): It’s unnecessarily overbuilt, it’s surprisingly under-spec’d, it’s comically (or maybe tragically) expensive, but with all that said, this is not just the display you want to have but the display you need to have. 😮 🙂 As a semi-serious comment, the Studio Display is so good in so many ways that if you need two displays side by side you are probably not going to be happy if one of them is a Studio Display.
I feel like this is a product Apple arent exactly proud of, display panel-wise, and will therefore be looking up update to a newer version asap (assuming supplies and material cost become viable) - this is an old display panel tech that does not stack up to the quality that is available today. I also think this is a $900 monitor being sold for double that, so i shudder as to what they might price a modern display panel
Hi, can you connect studio mac and macbook pro to Studio Display at the same time and in display itself choose which mac to use? Your test and answer will be highly appreciated.
@@RiccardoMerloVeganRetina is a made-up word, by Apple. It has no meaning. It's not a technology, it's just a higher PPI. And you can't see the difference anyway.
Its just a bit of a shame every other alternative allows you to adjust the height without spending another £400. Good design is about function at the end of the day and that's a really important bit of functionality missing.
Very nice. I have a question that no one answered properly. When you connect a macbookpro to a display via thunderbolt cable, does this setup harm the battery of the macbook when using it daily as a desktop unit.? Some say, the machine will recognize that it is powered up constantly and the current by pass the battery so it does not stress it. What is your advise? What is the proper and safe way to use a laptop with a desktop monitor?
Will the 27” display be clear enough for book reading? I often switch from book on my iPhone later in the day and pick up reading the same book on an HDTV which looks rather good.
For who are wondering: No 4K is not enough because for true retina 2x 4K only recreates a 1080p user interface. There are no option for that, only LG Ultrafine 5K. HDR content is good on this display, there are “HDR” displays that have less nits than this
The only reason a 4K won't work, is because of the OS, not the display. Apple could fix that in a heart beat. But then they wouldn't sell all their "retina" displays". You don't understand what HDR is. Any mediocre HDR monitor, with wide gamut and 10-bit color, will beat this display. It doesn't matter if it's only HDR400 or HDR1000. Color accuracy, contrast ratio, 10-bit color, high brightness level and wide color gamut is what matters for a HDR display. ALL of them!
I was told by Apple support that you "can connect a MacBook Pro to the Mac Studio with a Studio Display attached and be able to use the Studio Display with the MacBook Pro". This essentially turns the Mac Studio to hub without having to constantly plug/unplug the TB4 cable. Any way to confirm this?
I personally don't really care about the backside of the monitor since it's against the wall anyway. If I was looking for a modern looking display I may go for the Huawei 28" Mateview instead. It's 3:2 not 16:9 though.
My Apple Studio Display arrived on Wednesday! Here in the U.K. we Brits have to wait 3 months for these gems! My old 2018 intel Mac mini did not pair well with it. An odd start up problem. Took it to the Genius Bar and I came away with a new M1 Mac Mini this morning. The set up is all round sensational!!
Since Center Stage has been out on Apple devices for a year, I was wondering why no one had complained about its poor quality until the 27" display came out. It makes sense that it's because the screens were smaller and therefore a lower quality was sufficient. The big 5K display just brought out the awfulness of the Center Stage image. Since this has been out for a year, I wonder what bug Apple found that would improve the image?
Looking at this pricing, I wonder what the "new" iMac 24 or 27 will be priced at? Essentially, while it is better, you are getting what you would get in a 24 inch iMac with 27 inches and no computer (better speakers I know). I feel this is a good monitor but the pricing seems off compared to a M1 iMac. My reality is I have had and loved a 2015 iMac and finally am looking to upgrade. I will hold on as long as I can as I feel Mac Studio is perfect for me, but connecting it to this monitor at this price point puts the whole package out of reach (almost like Mac Studio is charging too little and this is too much) for me.
I have studied tons of reviews and I decided to go with Studio display. It has everything in it. Looking at 4 k options I see plastic, no speakers, no web cam and no mic, at least in the ones I was looking at. So I would have to add all that stuff and have e xtra wires etc which I don’t like. And then 5k versus 4K which is best for Mac OS. I have loved my cinema screen for 11 years and I just want the best for the next 10 years. A few hundred bucks extra for no compromises spread over 10 years is fine. My cinema screen is only 1440 but in truth it still looks great for my kind of work. I will soon be 80 and my eyes will need all the help the monitor can give. I agree with all your points.
I have a question. My Staples store as a sale selling the old IMac 27 at the same price, should I not be better buying it and using it as a monitor and in case my MacBook Air break it could always serve as a backup ?
Thanks for all that great information. I have a question and here’s the background info. I currently have the M1 iMac but will be going with the Mac Studio with the Studio Display shortly. Currently, I have the old 27” Thunderbolt as a second monitor … used mainly for Text and Web. A typical work flow has FCPX on the iMac and scripts, notes, various files, etc on the Thunderbolt. That old display still makes a decent picture …but … I’m having an issue with the Thunderbolt 2 adapter going into the iMac. It just doesn’t give a solid, dependable connection. I can go days/weeks without a problem but then the Thunderbolt Display will start flashing and any app that is open on it flies over to the iMac. Plus it can also make my RAID external drop offline (I don’t know how or why) and that causes bigger issues. I have to jiggle and reset the adapter a number of times for it to settle down. I’ve tried 4 different adapters and it happens on all of them. Thanks for sticking with this long story … here’s my question: Once I get the MacStudio and Studio Display, can you suggest a second monitor in the 27-32” range to serve as the second display? I hate giving up the Thunderbolt Display but that adapter is just not reliable. Any suggestion/advice will be greatly appreciated.
@@GregsGadgets yes mate, I was hoping for a new iMac 27 but obviously this is now no longer an option so looking for an alternative. will rely on my m1 pro 16” for my video editing, this display will be perfect. Still gutted they didn’t offer an iMac option though
As someone who LOVES their Apple Studio Display, there are a few things about it I don't like. 1.) The power coord is not removable, which in my opinion is just silly, I mean what if it gets chewed by a pet? 2.) Only 60Hz (this is nit picky, I rarely ever benefit from a higher refresh rate, would just be a nice add since the monitor is nearly 2k) Things I love 1.) Charges, send audio and video from my Mac (yes I know this is a USB C thing) 2.) Speakers 10/10 3.) Minimal cables 4.) Very simple look (I agree the whole gamer look is not my cup of tea) I don't really mind that it doesn't have height adjustment, but $400 for that ability is way too much. Overall I think the Studio Display is an 7-8/10, nothing more nothing less. It's good but it has some flaws which I hope will be addressed and corrected in the next variation.
Might be in the minority, but I don’t like the setup of having the Mac Studio sitting directly under the monitor. I think it would look much better off to the side.
Promotion on a 5K is still a dream. And no 4K is not enough because for true retina 2x 4K only recreates a 1080p user interface. There are no option for that, only LG Ultrafine 5K. HDR content is good on this display, there are “HDR” displays that have less nits than this.
The 2015 Thunderbolt display and 2018 Mac mini I'm using seems to work just fine. But then I live under a rock and haven't seen 5k presentations as of yet. So how impressed will I be if I add the Studio display and Apple Studio Max to my arsenal? No Apple stores in my area to view in person. Looks/sounds good so far though. Speakers on the new display vs the older Thunderbolt? Huge difference or just a good bit better? Good fire off the Homepod sitting next to the Thunderbolt if I need to. Thanks for your review! VESA would be great, trying to find more content on that topic.
I fail to find the value in this display. How can a 55” LG C1 with superior color tech be priced at $1250, while this display from several years back (essentially an iMac from 2017-I think) cost so much more? Is it really the webcam and A13 driving the price?
Probably something about pixel density and volume. The LG C1 TV is going to sell much more than these computer monitors (except the Studio Display, for obvious reasons), which is a good thing. More people should have access to great OLED panels at an affordable price. After being spoiled by the true blacks in OLED, it’s very hard to go back to LED monitors with one single backlight producing black as grey.
I have the LG lasted me 5yrs, loved it at first, then noticed the ghosting (bad). Well it finally went down and bought this studio display, with the adjustable stand. 2K! But I love it! So far… hope it’ll last 10yrs.
People compare the Studio Display to LG's monitors. That's comparing apples to oranges! The Studio Display's panel may come from LG, but otherwise it's impossible to compare with LG's cheap plastic housing and wobbly stand.
@@chidorirasenganz 100 nits different lmao gtfo of here. Adding height adjustment on a $1600 monitor push the price to $2000. Only biggest isheeps would buy this
@@Dreamwunder You do realize that’s a fifth of the LG’s display’s brightness right? That’s significantly more bright lol If you don’t want the height adjustable version you can always get a cheap monitor riser. @@chidorirasenganz hell going from 100 to 200 nit is double the brightness. After certain point there is something called diminishing returns. 100 nits is not justification for $1600 monitor who needs another several hundred bucks for height adjustment
@@Dreamwunder Except it’s not. OLED displays are known for being dim and outside of phone screens have trouble with outside light. And you do know that you can get a cheap monitor riser if you don’t want to pay for the height adjustable stand smh
Nice review, Greg! A fair one I would add at that. Guess the question I’m left with (with respect to the high brightness of the monitor and so-called “HDR” monitors lying about high brightness) is - does getting this monitor negate that fact that I can edit HDR content on it? I do a mixed bag of media having some HDR photos/videos and some non HDR photos. The main quality I’m looking for is having some compatibility, in terms of brightness, with my MacBook Pro 16” Saw MKBHD’s review of this monitor and he compared it with his MacBook Pro 16” screen and he said there was no comparison. However.. I’m using a 32” LG HDR monitor that has a brightness of a little over 300. So I’m thinking buying this will at least get me in the ball park!
Colors are exact and the picture quality is stunning. If you're looking for consistency across your devices, the Studio Display is a great choice. I love mine.
I have wanted an apple made monitor for a while. - build quality is unmatched - speakers are really good However for the money what you get does not seem to be worth it. This uses the same panel found in the 5k iMac from 2014 or 2015. It is color accurate but dated. No HDR, no mini led or other new display tech. No high refresh rate. A display imo will last much longer than a computer if it is of good quality. If I am not mistaken last year you could get the 5k iMac for 1800 base. That comes with the display, speakers, web cam oh and a freaking computer!. In almost every other device apple makes that have displays apple either has a really good modern display at a competitive price ( MacBook pro, ipad pro 12.9, iPhone 13 pro) or a really cheap device at a competitive price with an okay but dated device ( iPhone SE, Ipad, MacBook air) but the studio display feels like neither
Very poor design choice to permanently attach the power cable. It prevents people from getting longer cables if necessary, and of course if you ever damage the cable, what can you do? The absurd obsession not having mounting holes so a VESA mount is standard is another sign of Apple's devotion to minor aesthetic refinement over practicality. They could have put in little flush mounted aluminum hole covers and made a single design.
Yeah. I use the unboxing every day on my desk. The best unboxing definitely makes this one worth every single penny. Man these shills are getting out of control.
@GregsGadgets do you have to have the Mac Studio box thing for the new Studio Display to work? Or is it just like an iMac and don't need the Mac Studio to function?
They must be paying you well as $1500 minimum for tech which is at least a decade old plus a webcam that simply doesn’t perform as the adverts claim is fraud. I’m disgusted with Apple for treating loyal customers so shabbily. Gregg you are convincing nobody ! Apple have shown how greedy they really are. Post pandemic there is a pent up demand given more people are working from home for an equivalent 27/30 or 32 inch all in one iMac with a minimum of m1 silicon. Shame on you Apple !
I went and looked at this monitor at the Apple store yesterday. It visually looks good. It’s extremely small. They should have made it at least 30” for that kind of money. I don’t know, I’m keeping my Ultra Wide with a higher refresh rate that cost me less.
What part of Centre Stage needed the processing on the panel? This can all be done in software and doesn’t need the neural engine at all. Do you think it’s meant to be an advertisement for the A13 which has other benefits?
Thanks Greg for the thorough review. I’ve been waiting to see what you had to say before I purchased one. I’m planning on using it with my M1Max PowerBook 16. It should be much better than the old 27”” Dell monitor I’m using now.

Very annoying. Just reported one.
My 2 27”Apple Cinema Display connected to my Mac Pro 2010 still kicking it.
Yes. Why can't we have two Thunderbolt ports?
you sound like a fanboy..
Couldn’t agree with you more exactly my thoughts. With mini LED and HDR on the 2000 mid range
LG C2 42 inch has the same starting price, but it’s much more Color accurate, has 120 hz and oled. Add a webcam and you’ve got a better product.
Price it for a 1000 USD for being miles ahead of their competition? Wasn't going to happen.
Fanboys…..
To be fair for Apple, I always thought the 27inch 5k iMac was a bargain compared to other apple lineups. But still, I wish they sold the new studio display for like 1200 USD or something
Apple sheep
Because you can keep it and use it with multiple computers over multiple upgrades or use multiple displays with a single computer… I like having separate components. As for the keyboard/mouse thing that has always seemed weird to me… is this your first and only computer? I have plenty of keyboard/mice laying around
It’s called inflation…. Do the math. $1600 isn’t much anymore
Whoa whoa, y’all apple shills really gotta chill out. The display is good, but 1600 for a decade old technology in a new shell and not one of you at least take one step back in disgust is exactly why apple gets away with this.
It’s honestly sad. Why is he trying so desperately to justify a massive ripoff?
@@ryanw8664 we are probably gonna be hitting 3k with these new prices. But you’re right, that is IF it comes out
I totally agree with you.
I still think the stereo option should be an update to the studio display if not already, seems like a really easy thing for dual users
Same. I’d like a 2nd monitor for my 24” IMac.
they should cancel all imacs and offer displays plus mac minis instead!
@@MichaelGGarry I was really trying to point out the hubris Tim Cook shows at each launch event.
I had struggled to buy it, but after doing it I am obsessed with the Studio Display. The best thing about it is just : it works !
I just want a high refresh rate monitor that doesn’t look like a spaceship.
That’s true, the Eve Spectrum should have been the monitor that apple makes in that beautiful design of Apple Studio display.
This issa redemption video of a lackluster product…
I was planning on getting a MacBook Pro 16”
Now I am getting a MacBook Air and a Studio Display
I wish Apple would make a version of the audio display without speakers, a webcam, or that A13 chip, that came in at $300 less. For someone like me who loves multi monitor setups it feels like I’d be paying extra for features I’ll never use. Either that or Apple needs to push out software to let all the monitors act as one massive speaker
If you stumble on 300 bucks, the positioning of this display is probably not 100% for you
@@billimono4480 I guess it would be $600 for him. And he has a point. I hate paying for webcams I never use as well.
Don’t forget, you can’t daisy chain these as there’s only one thunderbolt port
My bet is these functions will be grouped in a multi-monitor setup in a future software release. Audio & Camera(s). If you wanted that functionality.
I agree is not a good value $2200 I rather buy iMac or Ultra 😒
Huawei monitor is 😻
8 months ago I would have strongly considered it but now that I’m used to the miniLED in the MacBook Pro I just can’t.
My toughts and why I'm not getting one:
1) 27 inch it's too small for a "studio" audience, they should have gone for at least 32 as in the XDR.
I agree 100 percent.
I haven’t seen a built-in cable since the CRT days
I wish the XDR stand could be used with Studio Display. The XDR stand is massive and solid.
This is a terrible review. Anyone that's telling yoh to buy this is telling you to genuinely waste your money.
That storefront faces west! I used to shop there when Apple's sole brick & mortars were Emeryville and Palo Alto.
It’s not worth it at all. The design is 10/10. But it literally costs more than an M1 iMac. The aesthetics don’t justify the price
@@Greego I bet you the reason is so the Mac Studio can sit underneath without scratching. But as we both agree, should be able to go lower.

I disagree, I think other than the looks, the functionality of this display is really overrated. For the price it makes no sense for most people, even if they like it in theory.

“phone” -> “microphone”
Nice video, I still use the older 27 Thunderbolt Display & 24 Display the look fantastic their amazingly and made well great design is phenomenal, and I still have $ left in my bank!
Great video !!! Which would be a good option if you don´t get the Studio display?
All the best
The XDR display supposedly will limit brightness if the panel gets too hot. Even with its design, that says a lot. I don’t think a 1000 nit panel will fit in Studio Display unless there is active cooling.

supposedly
You can buy a refurbished 5K iMac for $1299 instead to use as your monitor. Plus it comes with the magic keyboard, Magic Mouse, and a lightning cable for charging them.
You can’t use a 5k iMac as a target display anymore
As a semi-serious comment, the Studio Display is so good in so many ways that if you need two displays side by side you are probably not going to be happy if one of them is a Studio Display.
What about the power wire?
I feel like this is a product Apple arent exactly proud of, display panel-wise, and will therefore be looking up update to a newer version asap (assuming supplies and material cost become viable) - this is an old display panel tech that does not stack up to the quality that is available today. I also think this is a $900 monitor being sold for double that, so i shudder as to what they might price a modern display panel
more than double, the tilt feature for the stand puts an additional $400 to the sticker meaning if you want the full feature set its a min $2k
Hi, can you connect studio mac and macbook pro to Studio Display at the same time and in display itself choose which mac to use? Your test and answer will be highly appreciated.
I just wish it was 32". Love the aluminium chassis. Maybe a 32" will come?
Noooo 32” with same 5K resolution makes retina useless. 27” is already so big don’t be fooled.
Great video, exactly what I was looking for! All the traditional media channels seemed to have glossed over the display.
HDR content is good on this display, there are “HDR” displays that have less nits than this
You are 100% correct.
Yes. You can do this. No problem.
Picked mine up yesterday and have been usinh it. Love it! Worth every penny.
I personally don't really care about the backside of the monitor since it's against the wall anyway.
If I was looking for a modern looking display I may go for the Huawei 28" Mateview instead. It's 3:2 not 16:9 though.
For a none Apple monitor it looks excellent. However, are they now selling new units in the USA?
My Apple Studio Display arrived on Wednesday! Here in the U.K. we Brits have to wait 3 months for these gems! My old 2018 intel Mac mini did not pair well with it. An odd start up problem. Took it to the Genius Bar and I came away with a new M1 Mac Mini this morning. The set up is all round sensational!!
It’s nice and you almost convinced me but I think I’ll wait for the new 27” iMac with ultra
Can you connect the display to a console?
Since Center Stage has been out on Apple devices for a year, I was wondering why no one had complained about its poor quality until the 27" display came out. It makes sense that it's because the screens were smaller and therefore a lower quality was sufficient. The big 5K display just brought out the awfulness of the Center Stage image. Since this has been out for a year, I wonder what bug Apple found that would improve the image?
The power cable is not detachable, better include AppleCare.
Which version did you buy? Standard or nano-textured?
@@hugonot2008 standard.
I felt like crying when I heard Steve Jobs voice on that. Those were the days. Bless Him.
sad story bro
I have a question. My Staples store as a sale selling the old IMac 27 at the same price, should I not be better buying it and using it as a monitor and in case my MacBook Air break it could always serve as a backup ?
It can’t be used as a display. It doesn’t support it
That only works with older releases of macOS.
A couple more USB A ports on the back would have been nice. There are 4 on the iMac 27".
100% agree an Apple 27 inch HDR Display would be around 2/3rd's of the XDR.
Sure! If it's Apple making it. But a great HDR monitor costs no more than the Studio Display.
If this new Apple display was 32” + I’d be interested - as is, hard pass.
Thanks Greg, been waiting for your review
Hope you enjoy it
@@GregsGadgets yes mate, I was hoping for a new iMac 27 but obviously this is now no longer an option so looking for an alternative. will rely on my m1 pro 16” for my video editing, this display will be perfect. Still gutted they didn’t offer an iMac option though
As someone who LOVES their Apple Studio Display, there are a few things about it I don't like.
1.) The power coord is not removable, which in my opinion is just silly, I mean what if it gets chewed by a pet?
2.) Only 60Hz (this is nit picky, I rarely ever benefit from a higher refresh rate, would just be a nice add since the monitor is nearly 2k)
Things I love
1.) Charges, send audio and video from my Mac (yes I know this is a USB C thing)
2.) Speakers 10/10
3.) Minimal cables
4.) Very simple look (I agree the whole gamer look is not my cup of tea)
I don't really mind that it doesn't have height adjustment, but $400 for that ability is way too much.
Overall I think the Studio Display is an 7-8/10, nothing more nothing less. It's good but it has some flaws which I hope will be addressed and corrected in the next variation.
I kept waiting for why "everyone is wrong about Apple's Studio Display." Your review is verbatim what everyone else is saying.
Nice take! Thanks for this refreshing look at the Studio Display.
I want one but its $2499 AUD.
I could get a m1 MacBook Pro and and iPad mini for that money. Any chance you and do an alternate 5k monitor video?
I've read: Everything is wrong about Apple's Studio Display - and I was not surprised. ;)
*Would you recommend this Display or LG C2 42 OLED both are the same price but ones much bigger??*
Just ordered one here in the U.K. to go with my Mac mini. 27 inch and 5K … it just had to happen.
You made a really great point with the camera on a 27 inch screen. Well done
Might be in the minority, but I don’t like the setup of having the Mac Studio sitting directly under the monitor.
I think it would look much better off to the side.
Is that a new look for your channel it’s pretty nice
Yeah messing around with a new set. Thank you for the feedback!
Is the image processing for the webcam being done by the display or the device attached?
What's the refresh rate on this panel? Would it do for gaming?
60hs. Not meant for gaming.
Everything you wanted? For that price I would like HDR and a higher refresh rate.
LG C1 is extremely great value. But when it comes down to computer monitor, the price suddenly goes to the moon. This is absurd.
The Studio Display's panel may come from LG, but otherwise it's impossible to compare with LG's cheap plastic housing and wobbly stand.
also slower ports and lower brightness smh lol
@@chidorirasenganz 100 nits different lmao gtfo of here. Adding height adjustment on a $1600 monitor push the price to $2000. Only biggest isheeps would buy this
@@Dreamwunder You do realize that’s a fifth of the LG’s display’s brightness right? That’s significantly more bright lol
If you don’t want the height adjustable version you can always get a cheap monitor riser. The stand is way better than any monitor I’ve seen outside or the pro display stand which is 1k smh
Is there a way to adjust the brightness of this screen through windows 10?
@@GunCultureUSA Thank you! I actually bought one and I’m super happy I did!
It's on sale now for 1299 @ Best Buy and Amazon right now. I just picked one up and I think it's worth every penny! Good review!
Wish the Studio Display could do daisy chaining like the old 27-inch TB displays.
I have wanted an apple made monitor for a while.
- build quality is unmatched
- speakers are really good
However for the money what you get does not seem to be worth it.
I have a late 2014 5k iMac and the only thing failing is the monitor
Very poor design choice to permanently attach the power cable. It prevents people from getting longer cables if necessary, and of course if you ever damage the cable, what can you do?
The absurd obsession not having mounting holes so a VESA mount is standard is another sign of Apple's devotion to minor aesthetic refinement over practicality. They could have put in little flush mounted aluminum hole covers and made a single design.
Speaking like a true Apple zombie Grag
Yeah. I use the unboxing every day on my desk. The best unboxing definitely makes this one worth every single penny. Man these shills are getting out of control.
Thank you so much for explaining how monitors work.
Excellent review . I wouldn’t expect anything less from Greg. Keep up your excellent work !
Don't understand the negative reviews at all on this thing. Totally agree with you.
Thanks Greg for the thorough review. I’ve been waiting to see what you had to say before I purchased one. I’m planning on using it with my M1Max PowerBook 16. It should be much better than the old 27”” Dell monitor I’m using now.
