- In this video, I sit down with Nathaniel Sheetz, one of my ruling elders, to discuss the life and influence of J. Gresham Machen. Machen is the author of "Christianity and Liberalism," one of the most important books in the fundamentalist vs. modernist debates. LINKS BELOW

OPC viewer right here! Still an informative perspective piece, as with many of your videos. Thanks for all you do, brothers.
I like the articulation of Machen on using the same terminology/language but mean different things. I was praying for our church and got the impression from the Lord that we were seeing this in the progressive and hyper-charismatic influences in our church; that God's good news was being hijacked and reinterpreted. I felt God calling us to slow down and to preach slowly through Ephesians. Once we started to explain basic tenets of the faith (in Ephesians 2 especially) and define terms through Paul's lucid theological insight into Christ and salvation, a hostility started to rise to the surface instead of staying hidden in the background redefining terms. Liberalism doesn't like to be questioned logically through God's wisdom. It is happy when everyone is happy and no one is discerning. It cannot overtly take over a church or denomination if there are thinking minds who are devoted to the true Gospel.
I went to the library of Grove City College one day and took out Machen's book noted in this video. I was shocked to learn that the fundamentals he laid out were considered the least bit controversial by anyone. They were what I had always assumed ... and my M.Div. was from a Lutheran seminary. That was when I began to understand why the Lord led me out of Lutheranism back the upon graduation. Once upon a time, before my time, Lutheranism would have said "Amen" to Machen. By the time I came along, that Lutheranism was a fading echo from the past. Not so with the conservative break-aways from the main body, not so with a minority of the clergy, but indeed so with the ELCA ... the once "big dog" on Luther's block. Seeing it today is tragedy ... one they are proud of.
His commentary on Galatians, Introduction to the New Testament, and his primer on NT Greek should not be overlooked.
So great! Love Machen... and his teacher VOS!
A good book to read on this subject is Gary's North's: "Crossed Fingers: How the Liberals Captured the Presbyterian Church."
Bingo! Love the title that is precisely what they did
Christianity and Liberalism is a hoot. One of the best vehicles for explaining the Gospel -- Machen contrasted the saving religion of Christianity to the non-saving religion of Liberalism.
Lol I went to subscribe and I discovered I already was . also my wife is from Mexico so i speak Spanish as well
Blessings
Same for me. I was looking for J Gresham Mechen and found that I had subscribed to this channel previously during his Bible reviews.
we have reformed theology there was a radio show callad la hora de la reforma i canot remember the name of the pastor but we do have reformed teachings
How can you mention Tim Keller when he didn't believe in the literal interpretation of Genesis but taught Theistic Evolution?. Listening from Australia.
Machen volunteered to preach the gospel to soldiers in WW1 and spent most of his time in Europe making hot chocolate in the Canteen.
i googled him and his name is Juan Boonstra he is with the lord but he had a solid teaching ministry
If I may, an addition to my previous comment below: when I was in that Lutheran seminary, one of our professors loved to tell the students that "Things are not true because they are in the Bible; they are in the Bible because they are true." Sounded rather pithy and we were just a bunch of dumb seminarians so there was none there to call him on that.
Years later it came to me: Where then is the authoritative source of truth located? Answer: outside of the Bible. We are the outside of the Bible. We decide if something in the Bible is true or false. Wonderful! How liberating! Thank you, professor. You've just turned us into gods.
Too bad Warfield and Machen weren't literal six-day creationists. In my mind they didn't stand firm on Sola Scriptura & Westminster, and should have proclaimed all that the bible plainly teaches.
Hi. In what book I can find that from Warfield? Thank you.
