  • J. Gresham Machen’s classic book Christianity and Liberalism is more than one hundred years old, yet its contents remain relevant to this day. This is because the book’s main subject matter is Christian truth, which never changes yet always seems to be under attack. In this message, Stephen Nichols provides the historical context of Machen’s book to underscore why it was and is still urgently needed.
This message is from Dr. Nichols’ 12-part teaching series Christianity and Liberalism. Learn more: www.ligonier.org/learn/series...

I teach Church History; this lecture is superb. I'll be adding it to my students' coursework as they understand the Fundamentalist-Modernist Controversy and its application to the Church today.

Ligonier is such a blessing I love this ministry. I listen to R.C. Sproul so much he has turned into my inner monologue 😂

Like you, I am hungry for the Word every day! It hasn't ever stopped, I'm thankful for that need. Praise His Name, the desire and Ligonier teaching and preaching drove me to my knees in awe and repentance. I am so humbled and grateful I like saying hi in this way sometimes.

thank you so much for putting this stuff online for free. I just started reading this book today and was so impressed with its relevancy 100 years after it was written. You do a great job of setting the historical context of this book and how we can retrieve this orthodoxy and guard against liberal/progressive ideas dripping into the drinking water of the local church. This book has been so helpful in seeing how the same language is being used in a different way. I have been so confused and frustrated at how easy it is for the church to be brought back into its ever moving current. Even in my preaching I find myself slipping into how liberals appeal to God relationally. It is so ever present. I find people bored, unresponsive, asleep, ungrateful when ever Christ is not needed but only desired to help with self-esteem, loneliness or existential teleological crises. Liberalism slowly kills the life of a local church because the gospel has lost its power (1 Cor 1). Whenever I preach the need for grace and our desperateness I see a waking up and a commitment to God and the kingdom. It is crazy how much this affects church health.

Hallelujah For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Ephesians 6:12 KJV.
Your lecture is much appreciated, sir.

Couldn’t agree more. So clear in his delivery! I am so thankful for men like this who defend the faith while also being able to articulate themselves in such a peaceful way, not really provoking someone to anger who hears this.

Not surprised why this modern day Christianity is so man-centric.
