Side Quests need to change

  • Many Video Games feature side quests in addition to their main stories. These are mostly optional things to do that give you experience, money, or equipment. Many of these side quests have a problem though; they've kind of...boring. Let's talk about them, and see how they could be made better!

    This had been the hardest thing to adjust to for myself. I started playing games with side quests during the SNES era. During those days games were both sorry enough & had limited enough space that any side quests usually were fun, had good rewards & didn't take forever to complete.

      Yeah. I feel that the bigger games get, the more meaningless the side quests become.

    Sometimes, fetch quests can actually improve the game. CrossCode has the best side quests in any game I have ever played, I could write an entire essay on them, and among those are a few fetch quests. There's only one fetch quest per area, given near the beginning of the area it's dedicated to, and it always comes with 4 tasks: gather materials, defeat enemies, find landmarks and find a single well-hidden probe. The latter 2 get you to thoroughly explore this new area you just arrived at, while the former 2 make the process of exploring much more enjoyable. The majority of enemies in the game don't fight you unless you attack them first, and the combat is extremely fun, so the quest gives a reason to engage in combat while exploring a new area, while not forcing you in case you aren't in the mood for it and just want to explore. Material grinding is done by destroying plants which are carefully placed to make you more likely to find more obscure places. And, of course, all this is completely optional, but it's done so well that the majority of players willingly engaged with these quests. If the fetch quests are done so well, I think it speaks volumes on how well made the rest of the quests are.

      CrossCode is a game I'm looking forward to playing someday. Good to know that the side quests will be worth doing!

    100% agreed. In recent times side quests have become more of a to do list. I personally enjoy side quests in a game where traversal is really effective and fun like ps4 Spiderman or just cause 3 or arkham series. Great video again bro. Keep it up and always keep voicing our inner gaming thoughts through ur videos….:) 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

      You're right about the to do list. If side quests are low quality/an afterthought for devs than they should just be taken out. I always feel like I need to do them because they might have some great rewards, then realize a couple hours later that I've just wasted a bunch of time.
      Thank you, glad you enjoyed this one!

    Yeah. Some of the more basic side quests can encourage a player to engage in systems they may skim over, or extend gameplay post-story if for example the combat system itself is enjoyable enough to continue with. But usually there’s too many.
    In RPGs this usually leads to some balance issues - there’s a huge difference between a player who rushes the story vs completes a lot of quests, so the level growth and difficulty curve isn’t ideal for anyone on either extreme. Having fewer, more meaningful quests would help with that, potentially incentivizing players who skip boring quests to do some, and not being such a pace-killer for those who feel the need to complete everything.
    If I want to mindlessly grind for something, I can do that without a quest - and sometimes I do, it can be kinda relaxing though not stimulating. Can be fun to break a game by grinding some stat up item drop, for example.

      100%. Also nice name.
      But yeah for those of us that like to really engage with a game, it can be overwhelming to see how many side quests pop up, and then realize they don't reward you at all. 10 super in depth, story driven side quests would be infinitely better than 100 filler fetch quests every time.

    I hate egg gathering quests… The kind of quest where they want you to risk your life to enter a Dragon’s nest, mind you, to get a dragon’s egg (in hopes that the parents don’t find you there and turn you into breakfast first!) for some stupid special omelette!😢

    Borderlands 2 persona 5 dead space 2023 are some of my favourite example of side quests done right alot of them from what i remember never waste you're time and usually have a good enough reward.
    For instance a new weapon or a better understanding of the story.

    I understand the importance of side quests in video games but if I had the options between an over exaggerated fetch quest or the whacky over the top side stories of an RGG game then I’m always gonna pick the second cause those are more fun

    • @realtayo42
      @realtayo42  Рік тому

      RGG is actually the king of side content. I was blown away the first time I played a Yakuza game; I spent so much time in Majima's cabaret club that I forgot there was a story going on for a while.

    There was literally no reason for the FFVII Remake to consist of only the Midgar section of the original game. The "fleshing out" turned out to be nothing more than boring side quests

    • @realtayo42
      @realtayo42  Рік тому

      Yeah pretty much. Half the time in the game is doing side quests disguised as the main story. It was extremely bloated in the middle, could've cut out 15 hours and been better for it.

    This is probably why I avoiding open world games these days. I remember Arkham City had a small open world but yet had incredible side quests and main story. I just think that when developers focusing to make the world to be too big, they forgetting to create intresting side quests, and that happends with 99% of open world games today sadly.

    100% agree, I tend to skip most side quests. FF7R is probably the worst offender I've played recently, it has the most pointless sidequests and rewards I've ever seen, worse than ubisofts.
    Yakuza is a shining example of how to do side quests right. The hilarious side stories is a refreshing break from the serious crime drama main story. The shooreh pippi cult and the kiwami 2 job interview (if you pick only the wrong answers) are lol funny.

    This video is 1 second too long...."We were on the verge of greatness!! We were THIS close!!"
    Usually, developers don't put in half the effort they do in their games when it comes to the side quests because to them it is not where the 'core' game is at. The biggest mistake is thinking that having a lot of side quests to a game that would already be good without them is that it makes it better when in reality they are just filling it with mediocre content that is only taking away from the enjoyment. Side quests can be just as enjoyable as the main plot, if not even more, just in their own way that is different. More is only good if what they are adding is actually good, not if it is just more of the same.

    • @realtayo42
      @realtayo42  Рік тому +1

      Haha I just barely missed it!
      I really like your point about devs being mistaken that games "need" side quests. If there's a really solid main story, bad side quests just get in the way and actually lower the overall quality of the game. It's like every game wanting to have RPG elements now. Sometimes it feels incredibly forced and only makes the experience worse.

      That's not necessarily the point. You can critique movies without being a filmmaker, food without being a chef, or a book without being an author. I don't have the skillset to build a game, but I have an understand of what I as a player want in games.
