  • We all play video games, but what's the best way to go about it? Is it more fun to play one game for hours at a time, or to just play it a bit each night over a longer period? Let's talk about it!

    The only games I’ve truly gone on BINGE sessions with are Xenoblade and Kingdom hearts. I find that a really gripping narrative is what keeps me most pushing forward.

      I commend you for binging Kingdom Hearts, that story is so confusing I'd have to stop every hour just to look up a summary of what just happened lol.

    JRPG's have been scratching an itch I didn't know I had. Now I'm hooked to Shin Megami Tensei. Great video!

    I like your approach in this video. Not only did you did you explain how binging could be possible, but you shared some examples of games that are bing worthy and sprinkled in some game review. 👏🏽

    I have the tendency of trying to stretch out a game as much as I can before finishing it
    Something like spiderman ps4 or cyberpunk where I try to complete everything besides the main story cuz I want the game to last, idk if that's a good way of playing cuz eventually your left with only the main story to run through

      I think trying to slow down and do everything is great when you really enjoy a game and just don't want it to end!

    i'm currenly playing through my first playthrough of persona 5 royal. i have never played any other persona games before and barely even touched any other turn-based rpgs, but it has quickly become my favourite game of propably all time. i can totally see the slice-of-life bits becoming boring soon (i think i'm the turning point since i'm starting to finish up all confidants i'm actually interested in lol, about 80 hours in i think) so maybe i'll agree with you more once i reach that point, but for now, here's some arguments for why i've really enjoyed binging the game:
    - the way the story is presented case by case really makes me invested to see a full case through to the end in only a few gos. on top of that, there is very rarely a clear line when the aftermath of one case ends and the "information gathering stage" of another one begins, which makes it really easy to just slide from one case onto the next.
    - the MANY different types you can progress makes it difficult to remember what you were doing when you take longer breaks. the routine stuff like buying juice on sundays or seeing makoto on wednesdays tends to be hard to remember if i only pöay a couple of days at a time. it's even harder to remember when a "quest" requires multiple steps to complete, like gathering enough guts to talk to iwai or gathering intel to unlock mementos requests. this might just be the way my brain works, though.
    - once again, this might just be me, but i mostly complete palaces in one in-game day and do as much mementos requests as i can at a time, since i enjoy longer binges of combat. however, this also means that if i play the slice-of-life parts slowly, it takes me ages to really get to combat again. it's kind of a vicious cycle, but god, am i addicted
    but yeah, i might end up agreeing with you more once i'm actually finished with the game. i've still got a while to go lmao. i honestly think the developers did a good job of being aware of both playstyles - i imagine the "story this far" menu being really useful for those who like to take longer breaks than i do, and the game reminds you quite often about things like palaces you haven't done. still, i think the way the time is used up (for example, going to mementos takes a whole day) rewards a binging game style, and the gameplay loop and routines are really satisfying to get into for someone like me.
    good video, though. glad it was recommended to me. :) might update this after 50 more hours of game lmao

      I'm glad to hear you're really enjoying the game! It's totally cool to have a different opinion on how to go about playing that behemoth, and I certainly hope you don't experience the burn out I did. That said, Persona is one of my top 3 series of all time, and P5 is a fantastic game. I highly recommend you play Persona 4 Golden once you've cooled off a bit from the persona 5 royal playthrough. Thanks for breaking down you thoughts and sharing!

    I finished Spider-Man PS4 in 4 days 100%. Because it wasnt bloated and everything was well crafted and so much pure fun. But for some reason i find even 8 hours games chore and tedius to play.
    Some of my favourite games like ghostrunner, uncharted, god of war 3, a short hike, superhot, infamous, bulletstorm i binge played because they were paced really well, new things at each level, almost all of them pretty short. And none of them have unnecessary bloat. I have dropped so many games and never touched again because of the issues i mentioned.

    • @realtayo42
      @realtayo42  7 місяців тому

      Getting rid of bloat goes a long way toward reducing game burn out for sure. You make a good point!

    Your childhood is equivalent to my teenage years, butt the same thing occurred. I find that these days I still have time for games, but I need to plan out what & when I play each game.
    Currently doing clean up in Tears of the Kingdom one shrine each day, then playing Lies of P otherwise & if I'm tired then playing Lego 2KDrive or if friends are online them Fall Guys, Exoprimal or Shredder's Revenge.
    When I was primarily playing TOTK I would play for hours on end though, but having done most things other than beat the game now it can become a grind.

    • @realtayo42
      @realtayo42  7 місяців тому +1

      It's always those last few hours where I feel like games start to fall off for me. TOTK is incredibly daunting because of how utterly massive it is, but at the same time the quality makes it feel like such a worthwhile time compared to other games.

    You might want to invest in a dynamic microphone if you wanna handheld your mic. AT2020's meant to be screwed onto a stand not held onto. Dynamic microphones are less sensitive, more durable, and are what you see on stage and broadcast. Never used one myself, I'm just parroting some information to sound smart.
    Otherwise, good video :)

    Damn dude, you've been working out. It shows.
    I'd say it depends on the game.
    Something definitely happened with your audio in this video.
    I'd argue that RPGs are not meant to fully binge either, meaning, you're not meant to hit lvl 99 because if you were, they'd have more variety of enemies to battle then just one enemy at the stupid crater...looking at you FF7.
    Always enjoy your videos.

      Thanks, I try to stay consistent with the gym haha. And yeah my audio got messed up and I wasn't able to fix it during editing sadly.
      I agree with you there. I rarely if ever try to hit max level in an rpg because it just turns into a massive repetitive grind for hours and hours at that point.
      Glad you enjoyed it!

    Lol yeah I just beat persona 5 Royal (I beat persona 5 already), and I had that same rushing experience. I thought the game was done wayyyy before it was. I wonder how I would have reacted if Royal was my first playthrough though.

    Imo, if a game is longer than 23 hours, it should not be binged. My guiding example for this is that I played OMORI back in 2020 before it gained an obnoxious fanbase; I thought it was an outright masterpiece and extremely captivating as a game, I played it over the span of 2 days, beat it in 23 hours according to steam, and I still think about it even though I haven't played it once since 2020, but if someone held a gun to my head and said *"SAY SOMETHING BAD ABOUT THAT GAME"* I would say 2 things:
    One, it's too similar to "Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day" for it's own good, and (more importantly to this video)--
    Two, it sat on the very razor thin edge of "You know what, this game is too long for the story and gameplay it has" for me.
    It really depends on how the story and game is paced through a certain amount of game length. I think games are too long sometimes, I see the end credits of games less and less now and finality is kind of important for something to leave a good impression on me nowadays. There's too many live service games vying for people's attention, and too many games in general that are interesting.
    Which isn't a bad problem to have mind you, but if these developers are constantly trying to extract their ludicrous budgets out of us through stuff that's heavily unwanted like microtransactions and such, or they have to copy and paste mission types throughout a map, maybe that's a sign games should be a little bit shorter and more focused so the question of whether one should binge a game or not doesn't even really have to come up to begin with.

    • @realtayo42
      @realtayo42  7 місяців тому +2

      Imo many games would be better if they were a few hours shorter, not longer. The 23 hour thing is interestingly specific haha. I'm in a similar range; for me if a game is over 20 hours I never try to binge it. It just burns me out.

    Depends:
    Bethesda games are long hikes through the countryside and are best experienced at a slow pace.

    • @realtayo42
      @realtayo42  7 місяців тому

      I like the idea of it being a hike haha, so much of those games is just wandering around the wilderness without any sense of direction

    • @realtayo42
      @realtayo42  7 місяців тому +1

      That's cool, it's really not a one solution for all people kind of thing. If binging works for you on every game, more power to you!

    • @RobRamss
      @RobRamss 7 місяців тому

      @@realtayo42 I do agree with you on jrpgs tho. They're by far the type of game that I drop the most often despite genuinely enjoying my time with them. I can think of at least 7 that I've spent 20 hours in only to never touch them again, and I think that can be remedied by just taking them slowly.
      For whatever reason I always feel the need to finish games quickly so I can get on to the next one.

    I don’t generally share your sentiment about RPG’s being bad for long play sessions - oftentimes it can be difficult to jump in for just an hour and really understand what I was doing with my party composition, character build, what quests I was doing, and so on. In a genre I often find myself looking through a menu 10-15 minutes to set things up before engaging with the real gameplay, I often avoid this type of game if I don’t have at least a couple good hours to play. The key is that when you find yourself rushing to the end to get it over with, it may be best to put it down for a while. I sometimes play entire JRPG’s in the middle of a play through of another game, especially when I’ve fallen into a rut of trying to optimize everything to the point of it being not fun.
    I think the thing about Persona 5 Royal is they give you a lot of in-game time at the end but not enough meaningful new content to fill it, so you’re left with the confidants you care least about and some pointless hangouts, plus some really linear story interactions. You’re already running this issue at the end of vanilla P5. And the game is really too long for the content it offers - could have been contender for my favorite game of all time if it fit everything in a 100 hour playthrough, but it took me 150 hours and a lot of it was a slog to get through.

    • @realtayo42
      @realtayo42  7 місяців тому

      I do think that your idea of needing a couple hours-ish to really get stuck into an rpg makes sense. Not every game is paced like Persona; for instance a 1 hour session of tactics ogre really could be 30 minutes of menus. That just wouldn't work. It's definitely a game by game basis.
      And definitely, Persona 5 Royal took me 168 hours so similar to your playtime, and it just stopped being all that exciting after 100-120 hours.
