My Forever 4Runner is Fated

- I'm sure my local Toyota dealer that offered free lifetime oil changes on this 4Runner is happy, but I'm distraught that my forever purchase in 2003 has met the end of the road.

18 yrs of service as a daily driver is amazing. It definitely time for something new but I wouldn't complain.
This guy whines too much.
I use Cosmoline (RP342) on the frame and undercarriage of my 4Runner. Works great and it's impossible for it to rust.
Rust is the real achilles heel on japanese vehicles. I drive a 2017 Toyota Hilux and it had NO rust protection on the frame (like yours) when I bought it. The salty roads here in Austria just wait to eat up your car. There was already some light surface rust forming on it (despite having only a mileage of 18.000km/~11k miles); I had a shop do a underbody protection which cost me 600€. I hope that'll take care of it. I just hope now the body doesn't start rusting haha. Merry christmas btw.
Great tip on the undercoating and I bet your Hilux with last forever. Enjoy and Happy Holidays!
What kind of undercoating some just make it worse, moisture gets in between the coating and the metal . Looks good on the surface .
@@lawrenceparker1523 I'm not worried about that; It was really professionally done. They removed the surface rust, repainted the metal and then put two layers of undercoating on. They also did a cavity sealing (sorry if the translation is bad; I only know the German terms for it).
@ymxctrails I actually think that it's very hard to "rust proof" a car; it will start to rust at some point no matter what; but I for sure think that some undercoating is better than none at all ;)
Happy to see another video from you. Good luck with the sale. Got any updates on the new Crown Vic to share?
I rustproof my 1988 civic every year.. no rust at all. and Im in toronto. Its basically an oil change for the body.
I live on Long Island and owned a 2004 4Runner that I sold to my brother in law a few years ago (over 260k on the odometer). Other than regular maintenance (tires, brakes...both of which I went through quite quickly because of the NY traffic), oil changes and a few other things, this is the best vehicle I've ever owned and was the reason I bought a 2007 Sequoia Limited (for my wife, who loves big SUVs). The only issue I ever had with the 4Runner, which drove me nuts, was the low tire pressure light would constantly turn on even though I ensured all four wheels were up to proper pressure. For years I had this frustrating issue only to find out that the spare tire also had a tire pressure sensor monitor and that was what was triggering the warning light. Great car overall.
Chris in Scotland that frame is a minor issue easily fixed and full frame cleaned and underseal merry xmas
Yeah it looked pretty good to me. I'd patch that hole with some 1/8" mild steel, fluid film the chassis, and keep driving it.
Merry Christmas
I can honestly say I’ve never heard a bad thing about the 4Runner before, that amount of maintenance does seem excessive. Makes me wonder if only driving 7500 miles a year was harder on it than someone who drives a lot more? Maybe if it doesn’t get enough interstate run time that’s hard on 02 sensors?? I don’t know. Anyway, keep up the good work on your videos, I enjoy them
It looks amazing and brand new...
Although Toyota are still expensive here in Colorado, we don't have the rust issues. Being a dealer, I'd suggest just flying west to buy your next vehicle. I grew up in Philly and I would NEVER even consider a vehicle from there even if was fairly new. If you want to visit the Denver area, I'll gladly show you around the car market out here.
Same issue with rust I had to repair the frame in some places along the underside of my 4Runner. I ended up rhino lining the entire inside of my car. It works but I feel like that’s something they should’ve done from the factory
Merry Christmas 🎄 you and your family.
Such an odd place to rust and looking at the rest of the frame externally it looks solid, but have an internal moisture issue where it’s holding water or something. So sad.
I think you're exactly right in that the frame rust is happening inside the frame rails. Thanks for the visit and Merry Christmas to you!
That’s where all of these frames start rusting right under the passenger door, then it quickly works it’s way back all the way to the rear axle, you gotta be careful when buying these runners or the gx470s, they all rot on the passenger side under the front door. It’s such a shame
Good luck at the auction. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas 2021 !
Thanks man and thanks for the visit today. Merry Christmas!
Rust looked minor to be honest. I have seen welds rust like that on a 2 year old cars.
Thanks for the review have a happy holiday
In Illinois you can get another 10 years out it we only test for emissions
Only 135k in 17 years? That’s low. You’d think it would be much higher?
Could that rust have been prevented by running it through a car wash that sprays the undercarriage?
135 is nothing for a 4 Runner.. Most people who want to keep a car for a long time in the rust belt get a full Fluid Film once a year that includes inside of the frame. Cost of owning a car in the NE. Hell do it yourself and make sure its done right. 6 pack job in the fall while your changing the oil.
Merry Christmas to you and yours, as well!!
Merry Christmas. Great information!
Just remember Jeep stands for just empty every pocket 😂 but they are fun! And there is a great jeep community with a answer to anything to do with jeeps
Great job on the video! Reminds me how good I have it down here in Florida.
Merry Christmas Kris to you and your family.
Merry Christmas 2022 !!!
Brother, you ain't seen undercarriage rust until you've owned a 2002-2009 Trailblazer... oh my goodness.
Most of them blow the motor long before rust is an issue. They stopped making them in 08 and most were gone by 14.
I think it just depends on where you live I have a 2006 4Runner with 229,000 just regular maintenance done and replaceable parts. But I live in the Oklahoma/ Texas area no salt on the roads and every week pressure wash the undercarriage and treat in the winter with a undercoating.
I have an 04 Tacoma 4x4 with 129k miles, and it is solid. Only complaint is my glove box rattles. Zero Rust.
Have u ever used known products, very popular in your area
Another enjoyable video thanks friend. Happy Xmas to you and the family. x
Thanks my friend and Merry Christmas to you too!
Didn't the sequois also have frames rusting out like that? I though toyota had a recall on this.
Thank you of your genuine honesty
Happy Christmas to you and yours Chris 👍🏻🏴🍻🥃
Thanks bud and same to you!
Merry Christmas 🎄⛄🎄⛄
Happy holidays!
Merry Christmas!
Same to you! Merry Christmas
I don't know, but I strongly suspect, that most of your problems with that vehicle stem from living where you do and probably driving on salted roads. With 20/20 hind sight you could hose off the undercarriage every time you drive on snow. I wish I had done that with my vehicles. No, we don't get much snow. But there were a few snowy days that I drove my Avalanche and the frame has way more rust on it than you'd expect for a Texas truck. Ford Boss Me also did a video with a new rust prohibitor (and transformer) that looks promising and is relatively inexpensive.
So glad I don’t deal with rust her in California. We deal with a lot of other negatives but thankfully that isn’t one of them.
Merry Christmas my friend.
@STP
Yep, unfortunately I’m stuck here. I go back and forth to LA and I try my best not to get gas in LA. It’s over 5 bucks a gallon.
Everyone: Merry Christmas
4Runner: Bah, Humbug
Haha! Thanks my friend and Merry Christmas to you too!
Everything is dying. Its just a matter of what stage its at. Transportation, I buy cheap stuff and plug 500-1000 into it a year to keep it up. Wrench on my own stuff so labor is just my spare time.
Hey Chris, hope all is well. Have a nice holiday!!!
Happy holidays!
That’s a lot of work for a Toyota anything. Have an 04 Sequoia with 210k on clock. Did ball joints, rack , tie rods, struts, valve cover gaskets, two O2 sensors, 1- Cat. Many front brakes( It weighs a ton). That’s it beside maintenance. And 2 alternators. Sorry to hear how much u had to put in it
Thank you Chris, you just gave out a very reliable info on this 4th gen. 4 runner.
In western WA my 96' 4Runner is 98% rust free
I bet in this current market you will get more then you are expecting to get I hope you let us know what it goes for
Thank you for the honest unbiased review considering that you are trying to sell this car.
Yo.
wow..! i thought in the begining of the video you were gonna get to the rusty frame…i had a 07 tacoma that had the frame replaced but the A arms and all the rest of it it was all rusted but yea time to let that 4runner go.. great video
Have Toyota put a new frame on it
I'm not surprised at the 'punch list of items'. But jeez... it's 18 years old! Compare other 18 year old cars to this? I too had the 2003, traded it in for 2010 (it had +130K milage and slight head gasket leak, not a biggie). Now I have a 2017. I never regedit buying the 4R. Only problem I have is MPG - but I new that, no shame on me! But I do believe for the '03 model has rust is a big issue! From the axles, shocks, brakes etc. all that 'salt' causes those issues. And yes, Toyota had rust issues in the late 90's early 2000's for most of their models. But I live in the south - so, I shouldn't have those problems. Good vid! Nice infotainment! It's 18 years old - stop the complaining!
Toyota still the best choice
I have a 2008 FJ Cruiser that developed a hole in the frame. I had none of the problems you had but not as many miles either. I repaired the frame and until I tire of it, I will continue to drive it. There is no recall on the FJ Cruiser.
I love those FJ's, even more now than when they first came out. Enjoy her and Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
Happy holidays to you too!
U got a lemon... My 2000 4runner took it to 230k miles, half ass regular preventative maintenance, and thats it sold it in 2016 ... Nothing no rust, 2001 tundra 200k miles same except failed thermostat, cracked radiator $300 bucks. OW sensor nothing else in 14 years.... 4th gens were weird
I wonder what will you get to replace the 4Runner?
The northeast, I live there too, is a terrible place to own a car you love.
As to the mechanical disappointments all I can offer is that perhaps the car simply wasn’t driven enough? 🤷🏻♂️
7300 miles a year is almost not even warmed up thoroughly a lot of the time.
Rust, the Achilles heel of all Northeast vehicles be they expensive or cheap. They all succumb 🤔
All I'm gonna say is thank god I live in the south, road salt kills just about every vehicle it touches, even high quality stuff like your 4Runner
My 2001 Rav4 has had O2 sensor issues too, interesting that I'm not the only one!
I only wish I knew what the issue was with those oxygen sensors. Frustrating for sure. Merry Christmas!
@@hullinger Merry Christmas to you and yours as well!
As a former fleet owner it used to make me crazy when O2 sensors went out. I get that they’re there to protect the environment but it sure seems like easy money for auto shops.
Good idea to send it off. People have no idea about how Toyota metals hold up on the east coast. A customer of mines Rav4 subframe broke from rust while driving and the belly of the car hit the pavement. And those are still known as the reliable bulletproof ones for some reason. The metals they use do not hold up and constant fussing with the brakes.
I almost bought an 03 4Runner with 77k miles as my first car, went with an 06 Silverado instead. My parents 05 Highlander started having issues after 135k. Happy Holidays Chris and thank you for the video!
Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas!
Surprised to hear about the Highlander. We bought a new 2004 and it survived my wife and daughter’s driving for 245k miles and got traded off this year. Just routine maintenance until the control arm’s started to go.
Your records are fantastic. Honest review. Rusting right out from under you.
Thanks man and thanks for the visit today. Merry Christmas!
Wow, Jeff Bezos drives a 18 year old Toyota 4 runner, so down to earth. Have a great new year!
For a Toyota, I'm surprised its had that much work done to it. I'm curious how much of that was rust/ water/ snow/ salt related like the O2 sensors. Nows a great time to sell still but that window is closing IMO. I'm seeing more new cars on the lots and manufacturer rebates again.
@My Pronoun is WTF any idea why the o2 sensors kept crapping out?
Krown,crowne?
So many people think so highly of Toyotas but when it comes to rust, it’s definitely their downfall.
Really though any vehicle will last, as long as it’s maintained not just a Toyota.
Snow and salt destroys everything
Jeez my 03 explorer even held up better than that 4runner, it’s a shame. I live in Jersey and all my 03 225k mile explorer has needed is 3 wheel bearings, 1 caliper and a trans rebuild in all these years and a quarter million miles, also never garaged in the salt belt. I’ve been told I just got a good one and got super lucky but I’d expect a Toyota to hold up better still. Original 02 sensors and shocks on my rig, and frame is pretty much new looking, barely even has surface rust somehow. Hate how the rust belt kills these old tanks, it’s a shame
If you're going to drive on salt treated roads, then you can't blame the manufacturers. Should have rust-proofed it. People in other parts of the country who own 4Runners don't have this problem. It's a North-eastern states issue only.
Can't say that frame rot is limited to Toyota. If you live in the rust belt, any vehicle you own is going to suffer from salted highways. Hopefully, now that fluid films and cavity waxes are available, owners are doing preventive maintenance and protecting them when they buy them new.
Chris, its ok to let go. Nothing gold can stay. We will remember her.
Thanks man for the visit and Merry Christmas!
My father in law has the same year, one owner, well maintained... In Michigan. We recently discovered the brake lines rusted through and the mounts rusted away in the frame to the trailing arms I believe it was.
Thankfully you have Krown Rustproofing in Michigan now. His next 4Runner can be fully protected.
I think you got your monies worth for 18 years ! Keep it for two more years and you can say 20 years !
Great to see you again, how tha s550 you had? Anyway keep up tha great work👍🏽
3 sets of front axles, what's the story there? That's nuts!
Cheap chinesium junk. Probably the boots split and he had no idea because he never inspected them. Once the boots are split it's new axle time a little while later.
Rust is not a problem where I live in AL.
Nicer winter temps and no rust! Sign me up!!!
Based on all the parts you mentioned, I guess the dealer/mechanic took you for a ride. First, I would only put original Toyota/Denso O2 sensors (other brands can give problems). Second, many dealers/mechanics think that replacing parts is the best approach to "diagnose" a car problem, since the customer is the one paying for the parts/time and not them. Always get a 2nd opinion and look for another dealer/mechanic. I have a 2006 Sienna (186,000 miles) and a 2009 Corolla (165,000 miles). I've had the Sienna for 9+ years and the Corolla for 8+ years. Besides oil change, ATF fluid change, brake pads and tires (all maintenance items that any vehicle will need), the only other thing they needed was an O2 sensor for the Corolla. That's it. And I'm planning to keep both until they don't run anymore :)
Exactly.
It is common knowledge here in the southern US that you don't want to buy a car from "up north" because of the salt. If I see a Carfax with owners in Minnesota, New York, etc., I toss it and move on. It's a real shame that they can't convert to spraying brine water instead of using salt, but I guess that's too efficient and costly for small town councils. It would save car owners a lot of heartache. Myself, I hate to see a nice car with rust.
Coming from a country where rust is a thing of the past is there not a way to treat rust as you go. That rust looks very dry and not treated ?
They don’t make anything like they use to
Merry Christmas!
Well, you just explained why there are so many fourth gen 4Runners for sale at such low value. It's no wonder the current fifth gen is so sought after, a hot seller, and has incredible value. They're just the better overall vehicle. Plus, they add way more to the table when it comes to safety features, reliability, looks, and tech.
Guess you haven't really checked prices lately, they are still going for 10 to 15 grad even at 18 years old.
We have an 2006 and 2011 here, I much prefer the 2006 personally. It's a much more solid vehicle, and the V8 is icing on the cake. The 2011 sounds hollow when you close the doors, the 2006 has a solid thud.
It’s your fault for not annually fluid filming it. Any vehicle that old will eventually rust.
"Mr. or Miss Consumer don't buy this vehicle !" but wait a dealer can buy it at Manheim and sell it to the same Mr. and Miss Consumer. Hilarious
toyota sprayed the frame on my 2016 tacoma
Don't hold your breath, it is no good, i had 3 Tacomas, two with new frames, but they all came from the same batch made for 2016 and older. still rusted. frames were made by DanaCorp.
Follow the VIN this thing is going to end up on a lot with a crazy high price on it.
I recently purchased a 01 4Runner sport edition. Same frame issue, I had a minor hole that needed to be patched but overall. The 3rd gens are more reliable then the 4th Gen. Personally I think the 4th Gen is about that time when Toyota started to use cheaper quality materials in their vehicles. Which is why I avoided the 4th Gen.
Glad I'm still driving my 80's Toyota truck, no sensors just a basic truck.
Wow I live in Miami and those issues are nonexistent to my 2006 except for the controversial floor mat issue. Im on 79000 waiting for the 80000 service. I can say here in the south many of the SUV paint gets damaged by the sun that also warps the weather strip. I'm astonish my frame is still solid but i will say there are issues i experienced but were DIY thank god and now I have a blinking low tire light flashing.
You will have no trouble selling it as they are in high demand and you're a fool for just not fixing it, they run forever if taken care of. That frame can and will be patched and the next owner will be smart enough to underspray it each winter with an oil preventative. Yes it probably shouldnt' have happened but they are sill some of the best vehicles on the road.
Chris...so sorry to hear about the O2 sensor and frame rust issues on your Forerunner...18 years isn't a bad run for a Northeastern car, but still, it's a Toyota...we expect them to go forever, particularly with such meticulous care. Even Toyota and Honda have made a few stinkers here or there...oil dilution tends to be the random gotcha on specific engines in their vehicles. What will you use as your daily driver going forward?
Merry Christmas. 18 years is a fantastic run. Let us know what your new daily driver will be.
A $50000 SUV that will start rusting underneath in a year or two. Unless he smartens up and coats it with Fluid Film or something.
If ot was a Ford or Chevy, you can double the issues.
👍
I had an 04 with the 4.0 v6 that i bought used in like 2011 for $16k. Drove it from 60k miles to 140k and never had a problem. I still regret trading it in on a new tacoma because the new 3.5 engine sucked ass. I would blame your state for salting the roads. I don’t know how you people live up there and aren’t constantly enraged by your vehicles being destroyed. I lived in Alaska for four of the years I had it and they get by without using salt.
Thanks man for the visit and comment and Merry Christmas.
That's why if you get another Rust free example because of where you live get it properly under coated, Merry Christmas
I had a Toyota pick up and it went through 7 alternators and two head gaskets. But the rust was the worst thing. The bed sides started rusting through in 3 years. After 13 years the fenders were literally flapping in the wind.
@ymxctrails yeah, it also could have been prevented if I moved south.
In 18 years you had those problems and I get it, not to big of a deal but what are you going to replace it with, and when you replace it will it last as long as that 4Runner? You said it, you live in the Northeast. Anything is going to rust, so if it's paid off and you bought it new, you know where it's been and what's been done to it why not just keep it and run it into the ground. Ultimately it's your vehicle and you can do whatever you want with it but I can almost guarantee you will probably regret getting rid of it.
I'm the original owner of my 05, w/ the V8, w/ 180K miles here in DC. While very thirsty, it still runs & shifts perfectly but I'm worried that undercarriage rust will ultimately be the demise of it as well. However, my rust is not near as bad as yours, not even close, so I've got some time. Plus I still like the V8 over the new 6's as I tow a lot with it.
You could get a v8 in a 4Runner? Did not know that!
Buddy, your list of repairs is mostly consumables. Get some tools and a repair manual and all that stuff you mentioned is easy to keep up with. How do I know? 2003 4Runner at 200000 miles. Costs me next to nothing to keep on the road and drives like a new vehicle.
My friends wife has been threw 2 of the body styles both had over 230k but both rusted to pieces even with under carriage pressure washer numerous times in our Salt state
Maybe rust proofing it from new would have helped?
I think you're right about rust proofing. Hind sight now though. Merry Christmas!
@@hullinger Merry Christmas, Chris! 🎄😊
