    Hi friends! For these next 2 episodes Joe was away on a business trip for his other job but he also has some memories of this show so he said to go ahead, BUT TO WAIT FOR THE LAST TWO! So , sorry again it's just the 2 of us but the summer is convention time for Joe's job!
    Also note, Mike's microphone was messed up for the next two sadly, when moving the setup someone hit a button. Since then, sound testing has been done to correct this further! Sorry friends!

      I was on set for part of this. My friends and I were standing in The Bronze when Buffy shouted, "Don't walk away from me bitch!" It was bizarre out of context. We got to meet the janitor, John Hawkes, who later got an Oscar nomination for Winter's Bone.
      I don't think Snyder knows what a Slayer even is.

    Buffy is obviously mad at James and blames him for his Ms. Newmans d£ath because she (Buffy) feels like she k*lled her boyfriend. In a way she did. Buffy slept with Angel (“A moment of blind passion”), which killed him. Angel is gone, and now Angelous is here. Buffy is blaming herself for what happened and feels like she doesn’t deserve forgiveness.
    I love this episode so much. I didn’t understand it when I was a kid but when I got older, “C-L-I-C-K”.
    Ps **the janitor and the teacher didn’t really know each other. The writers gave us that information when they had the teacher ask the janitor “George. It is George right?”.

    A very clever plot with an excellent twist. SMG and Boreanz dial it to 11, and that heart wrecking kiss just destroyed Buffy.
    Then Dru's "We'll find you a nice toddler..." Criminy. You KNOW she wasn't kidding.
    Angelus is just loathsome.

    The story was centered around the idea that victimhood IS paralysis (for 50's boy, for Buffy, for Giles, AND especially for Spike) - moving beyond impotent anger is the solution, whether it's through determination, acceptance, or forgiveness.

    Here's my tinfoil hat theory
    The teachers ghost is the one causing all the scary events to try to get everyone out of the school so that no one gets hurt. She knows how the scene plays out and can't stop it from happening that way but she can try to stop the scene from starting.
    She finally gets everyone out and locks it down with the wasps, but the student has found a soul that already needs the same kind of forgiveness he does in Buffy. That allows him to call her back.

    I always figured, based on the conversations we've seen like this one with the chief of police, that the city government is aware of the supernatural problem Sunnydale has, but they can't do much about it, so they are just focused on covering up the supernatural. So they are looking for other reasons stuff happens - like "a pack of wild dogs got into Flutie's office and ate him" - to keep the general public from catching on and raising a fuss.
    So when Snyder was hired as the new principal, I think he was filled in on the Hellmouth being under the school, and instructed to blame any disturbances on troublemakers rather than let the truth be known. Buffy has a record as a troublemaker, so whether or not he knows shes the Slayer, she makes a good target. Remember in School Hard when he put the blame on "a gang on PCP"? He couldn't really blame Buffy directly, because too many people saw her helping fix the problem, but he certainly didn't give her sny credit either.
    And the chief of police using the Mayor as a threat? Sounds like the Mayor knows and is at the top of the "keep everything quiet" pyramid.

    • @gungho1284
      @gungho1284 4 дні тому +3

      I would guess that the mayor picked Snyder to be the new principal because they needed someone who will help cover up the truth. Though he might not actually know what a slayer is. Snyder is just a flunkie.

    This is a good episode. It finally allows Buffy to forgive herself, after hearing it from Angel's lips (even if it wasn't really him). She definitely needed that.
    I love that the ghosts used Dru as a messenger to get Angel to go to the school.
    The one thing I don't agree with is the idea that Angel is "stealing" Dru from Spike. She seems to be enjoying having them both around. Sure, Angel is using that to make Spike angry, but that's just good fun XD

    Great shirt Mike! I don't think the janitor was dating the teacher. When they were alone, he called her Miss Frank and his face did not show any affection for her. I also think the 1955 teacher still loved James. She was breaking up with him because she knew what they were doing was wrong.

    The janitor and the teacher were picked because they were the only people around.
    It was cathartic for Buffy that it was her and Angel, but they were also the only two people around at that time.

  • @Talisguy
    @Talisguy 5 днів тому +5

    Regarding the teacher and janitor...I guess it's possible he had a secret crush on her, but they definitely weren't having an affair. It's made clear in dialogue that she barely knows his name.
    Though there is some connection between the possession and the relationships the host bodies had: if you rewatch all three versions of the argument scene, the one between the teacher and janitor who barely know each other is a lot more low-key than the other two, like maybe the ghosts were constrained by the fact that their host bodies only being very distant work acquaintances. The possessed couples really swing for the fences by comparison.

    • @PromptCriticalJello
      @PromptCriticalJello 5 днів тому +2

      The possessions seemed more a matter of proximity and isolation to me.
      A boy and a girl physically near each other and far enough from others that the scene could play out. They kept getting interrupted though, so the ghosts kept trying until they found a couple that could complete it.

    • @Talisguy
      @Talisguy 4 дні тому +1

      @@PromptCriticalJello I agree, I think it's mostly a matter of convenience. I just mean that the relationship of the possessed hosts does seem to be reflected in how the argument scene is performed.
      I don't know if it was intentional or not, but they are, in ascending order of drama:
      Two middle aged people who work in the same building and occasionally say hi or exchange pleasantries, but that's it,
      A regular teenage couple,
      Forbidden lovers turned mortal enemies Buffy and Angel.
      The performances kind of mirror the level of inherent drama one would expect from the people involved.

    I like your new surroundings. Solid review to an episode that some of us think is one of the most important in the series. There are so many moving parts and major plot elements that the emotional growth and challenges to Buffy and her character arc is overlooked. There are many consistent stories but one of the main is the journey of Buffy becoming a strong,independent, morally responsible, loving , and passionate woman. The arc of understanding and acceptance of the freedom of choice, the difference between vengeance and justice, the power of forgiveness, unconditional love, and the embrace of moral choice over selfish gain… the basic values of Western Civilization… that started in Lie To Me are laid bare to Buffy. Buffy can not comprehend or understand the power of forgiveness and that the need is overwhelming. In this episode Buffy has become a killer. A person that killed his love and is overcome with shame, fear, grief, and a profound sadness. This act of violence against another person is incomprehensible to Buffy. She feels the need for forgiveness that is not earned but granted. It is the power of forgiveness that can not be achieved by actions but by the wronged person granting out of compassion…. Love for another person without personal gain but from the purity of love for another with no other purpose. The concept of compassion, love for another without gain, and forgiveness of evil against oneself is a philosophy that has been the basis of individual versus the collective in Western society. The idea of forgiveness of the allegedly unforgivable is a lesson and idea rarely understood or embraced. The rejection of this individual power was manifest by the Gypsy curse. An entire family was overcome with the evil of the selfish desire to inflict pain that was their ultimate destruction. Jenny, her uncle, 100 years of family , and Angel again all were consumed. Buffy being an “ evil” person, a killer, is beyond her comprehension until she becomes the killer of her affection. Only when she needs the power of compassionate forgiveness can she learn that the first step in understanding love is to not hate yourself . There are many layers to this episode and the debate is ongoing. Keep this episode and its lessons in mind while you watch the growth and maturity process within Buffy. Not Willow, Xander, Cordelia, or Joyce can or will be able to be the wronged or the assailant… but Buffy has and it will serve her when she has the difficult decisions a woman and a Slayer must make.

    Yay! Mike's back! So glad to hear a little of your reaction to Passion. Joe, hope you have safe travels!
    I love this episode. I like the symbolism of the 1950's teacher and student matching Angel and Buffy and how Buffy feels guilt because deep down she thinks she needs to be punished for "causing" Angel to become Angelus -- we know it's not her fault, but she's clearly been struggling with it and the spirit of the student brought it all to the surface. Or as Cordelia put it, "Over-identify much?" Lol.
    I also really like the gender switch in the big moment between Buffy and Angel. We assume it's going to be Buffy = female teacher and Angel = male student, but having it be reversed matched the situation much better and made the struggle between them super interesting. Plus, it gave both actors something interesting and out of their usual realm to portray, with Buffy being the angry spirit and Angel being the softer more compassionate one. (And Angel turning back to Angelus and needing a shower and a 'kill' before sunrise is disturbing yet kind of funny.)
    Also... can't wait for Spike to reveal his big "I can walk again" surprise to Angelus and Dru! 😄

    Buffy was actually feeling a tremendous amount of guilt. Bot just for her own self, but because in a way she killed Angel. She took away his soul, or at least it was because of her. Which is true, and now there's this monster running around. That is not, you know, him, and it's her fault, in a way.
    So that's what this was about.

  • @Buffy8Fan
    @Buffy8Fan 5 днів тому +1

    The creator of the series watched the daily's of David Boreanaz acting as Angelus being possessed with the teacher Ms. Newman and realized he could carry his own show.
    I always felt Willow sent the guy after Buffy at the beginning of the episode. She doesn't seem to really understand and/or respect Buffy's emotional state about the situation even if she didn't, though.
    Sadly, the teacher and the student is equivelant to the toxicity of Buffy/Angel in terms of age difference effecting the relationship, whether you look at Angel's vampire years or the fact that he cannot pass for a high school student when Buffy is a high school student.
    This episode's theme shows Buffy shedding her guilt of how Angel became Angelus. She still seems to be in denial about the similarities between the Bangel and the ghost's relationship, though, in large part because of the difference between Angel and Angelus, and in part because Ms. Newman used Angelus while James used her to reunite.

Love its theme of forgiveness and how it all leads up to the Buffy/Angel scene at the end, crossing cutting them with the student/teacher. The Spike moment at the very end is also an exciting moment. Lastly, the episode is noteworthy for its brief info dump on the Sunnydale municipal government.

    I'm thinking perhaps Giles was not completely out of his gourd when he thought Jenny spirit was still trapped in the school. Who do you think made the yearbook fall in the principal's office when Buffy was there?
    It could be the teacher wanting BUffy's help to break the cycle and finally tell James how she really felt, or it coud be Jenny wanting to help.

    I always thought I Only Have Eyes For You was a great stand alone episode, where the tragic love affair between the teacher and student from the 1950's is repeated down through the years by anyone who is influenced by it in the school now. Great writing here in a very atmospheric episode, in which we also have the Angelus/Drusilla/Spike triangle in the background. Interesting that Buffy has no empathy for the student in the incident, even though he is the young innocent, and the female teacher is the adult, of course she is using her own experience of being hurt and reflecting this in her attitude. Another interesting thing about this episode is we hear Snyder and Police Officer mention 'The Mayor' for the first time. Great scene at the end when Spike is now able to walk and is plotting his revenge. This is very much in the style of X-Files type episode.

    1:31 Angel and Angelus are not exactly different people, IMNSHO. I think it's more like insanity. And, unless I'm mistaken, insane people might be held accountable, depending on the kind of insanity.
    2:52 Not sure you realized what just happened. A guy asked a girl out. She said no. He accepted it and walked away. Wow. I mean, it happens all the time, but it's so rare you get to see it on TV.
    5:35 You do remember, Snyder asked Willow to fill in until they find a new substitute teacher, right?
    16:57 The actor who played James thought “OK, SMG will do the part first, obviously, so, all I have to do is to repeat after her”. Nope. They made him do it first, and SMG repeated after him.
    18:26 I think they've said explicitly, the janitor and the teacher weren't in a relationship. The boy and the girl in the beginning were, but that's likely a coincidence. The important part is that two people were in the right place, I think.
    25:26 Why would Snyder know Buffy is the Slayer? Why would he even know there is such a thing as a Slayer?
    26:05 Assuming there is such an organization, why do you think their goals would align with Buffy's? Because secret government organizations always work towards the greater good?

  • @miriam8376
    @miriam8376 3 дні тому

    It’s funny to me that the twist of Angel being able to fix the issue only comes as a surprise because of the audience’s gender expectations. Everyone just assumes a female ghost would only possess a female victim. If not for that expectation, it would be kind of obvious what the solution is. Buffy does a lot of subversions this way, and it makes for such interesting tv.
    Also, this episode really changed my read of the episode innocence when Buffy and Angel first make love. When they’re right about to, he hesitates, and pulls back, and suggests they shouldn’t. Buffy cuts him off, going so far as to press his lips closed so he can’t finish protesting, and tells him to kiss her. Obviously he could say no again if he wanted to, but that one moment of Angel second-guessing the decision is clever writing that pays off here, because it sets up Buffy’s guilt.
    Obviously, she couldn’t have known what would happen, but when bad things happen, we have a tendency to find little moments where we think we somehow should’ve anticipated it and made a better choice. You can tell she’s been fixating on what would’ve happened if she’d just listened to him when he tried to talk through the consequences.

    This episode is great. I love that they didn't forget Jenny the moment she died as tv shows tend to do.
    But the part that got my attention the most (on rewatch at least) is Snyder knowing about the hell mouth.
    I like the theory of him working with the secret agency the took Marcie (the invisible girl) away. But I'm pretty sure the guy he is talking to is more of a policeman than an agent. Which makes the Mayor the next big player since a government agency (even a municipal government agency) that is trying to contain a Hell mouth and study the people that are changed by it would LOVE to vivisect a Slayer if they get their hands on one. Or Snyder and the Mayor could find a way to contain or kill Angelus without the help of Buffy. To spare her or to undermine her? Both are plausible at this point in series, in my opinion.

  • @ojpete
    @ojpete 4 дні тому

    So, here's a hint about Snydr, Joss Whedon manned the helm for the creation of the MCU. Maybe Snyder thinks Buffy isn't good enough as she is and wants to push her to be better in his own way. Maybe in the next season or two he'll be inviting her to a government initiative to stop demons from taking over the world, or just causing chaos. Or, maybe I just made this all up just now.
    At any rate, thanks for the reaction, hope you have a great day
