Katee Sackhoff tells the story where that scene was when Edward James Olmos taught her how to act in 30 seconds. He said she was faking it and she needed to sit and think about what’s going on with this character instead of being Katee. When she breaks down at the end of the scene, that’s actually her having a genuine reaction because she’s put herself into that character.
After that scene he said, “Now, you can go back to being Katee, because now, you know how to do it.'”

I wonder if the excessive use of those Starbuck crashing flash-forwards had anything to do with commercial breaks. Maybe the director or whoever wanted viewers to come back from the commercial break onto the tension/reminder, or it was some attempt at viewer retention. But I think it probably would have been more effective just doing it once right in the beginning and then letting us forget about it until it actually happened. Loving your reactions!

I'll clarify the reasonable doubt: They had many of the pilots of Galactica's contingent from before the attack on the colonies. But the incident at the beginning of the episode now forced them to take new recruits from the civilian fleet that must be trained from zero. Starbuck is the reasonable choice as before getting on Galactica pilot training was her job.

I think what the flashforward does is cast a sense of dread. Because of it, there's a feeling of impending doom throughout the episode. Like a "when's the other shoe gonna drop?" thing.

There are a lot of bad scenes where a miscommunication goes horribly wrong, but the Apollo-Adama scene was a very well done, and believable, slow-motion trainwreck.
As I read somewhere else, Starbuck may be god to the nuggets, but Adama was God in their scene.

The "random" multi parters of the 1978 BSG is because it wasn't intended to be a weekly show, it was planned to be a series of tv movies.
There are six multi parters, comprising over half the episodes of the season for this reason.
This is also why some of the one off episodes had bizarro western plots.
It was a late change and harmed the whole concept. It might have run a few more seasons if they hadn't done this.

Lorne Greene had gravitas. I watched reruns of Bonanza for ages so he was to me the ultimate sage patriarch. That carried over into BSG. But, I think Edward James Olmos is excellent in the new BSG. I can't think of anyone else who could have been a better actor for that role.

While watching the show i often have to remind myself that the battlestar Galactica and its fighters were all retired decommissioned ships... they were basically a museum piece like some ships in some of California's harbors, so almost the whole fleet is 20 to 30 years old, used up, beaten, broken down, some with older outdated tech that had to be overhauled. other than a few ships that have been lucky enough to survive all the battles... so thats why their stuff is always crappy, breaking down, and so many accidents. Their basically on their last leg without fresh ressuplies.
I look at it like the federation and crew from TNG losing the war with the klingons and being forced to fight the war with constellation class starships out of mothballs from scrap yards and museum s.... it wouldnt end well and no victory in sight without the best crew and the best strategies.

Ron Moore has said that the studio execs kept pestering him about how grim the show was (too much "tonnage" of misery) and asked him to throw in something fun and light, like the characters having a party. So he did, and had a bunch of pilots die. He said the execs pretty much stopped asking for those things afterward.

The scene where Adama is tearing into Starbuck James Olmos really made Katee Sackhoff cry. I think BSG used cold opens and the occasional flash forward for one crucial reason.
It was a heavily serialised show and much more of a slow burner than any other scifi show on TV at the time.
Pre the advent of streaming, I think they felt the need to keep teasing the audience that "don't worry, something exciting will happen!"
The show was a critical darling but never found a popular audience the size of Stargate Atlantis, one of its contemporaries, I think mainly because of its darker tone and focus on character centric plot lines, as opposed to action week in, week out.

That room is my favourite set in season one. Katie Sackhoff said on a podcast that this day on set ( when they were filming it) started her down a path to become who she is today. Olmos' coaching and care really changed her carrier. Her words not mine.Apaprently she was not really taking it that seriously and EJO saw that despite that she was still soo good and pushed her to commit and give it everything she's got.
This episode alone that room had so many great scenes and there are much more to come. The scene between father and son, both scenes with Srarbuck and Adama, they were just so good. Adama was a fighter pilot as well before he advanced in ranks. He drops a comment in the miniseries when they talk about her with Tigh when she was in the brig. He said she is a much better fighter pilot than he was, so beside his love for her he also respects her skill and the way she faces things head on. Super valuable member of a fighter wing because ( since she is also a flight instructor ) she also knows how to work in a team. But yes he loves her like a daughter he said so himself. But that look he gave her in that room really tore her up you could see on her face. Brilliant acting from both.
To address your question about who trained the piltos before, they were trained by the Colonial Navy Academy and certain fleet squadrons ( like in today's NAvy ). Kara never trained anyone after her fiance died.
These fightercrafts are indeed weak, they have no shields simple projectile weapons and missiles. But on the other hand the Raiders are just as weak. The tech in this show is really grounded which I like a lot. Also, at this point the Galactica only have Mark 2 Vipers ( + Apollos's original Mark VII ) which were part of the museum on the port hangar deck.

    • @Educated2Extinction
      @Educated2Extinction 3 місяці тому +1

No shields makes things far more difficult, and interesting. Galactica is massively armored, but other ships are just as fragile as what we have today.

    • @neutchain7838
      @neutchain7838 3 місяці тому

@@Educated2Extinction One of the main reason I love the 2003 series. No shields, no lasers, just good old armor plates, projectile weapons and missiles. The only scifi tech they have is the FTL drive but they needed it to facilitate the travel somehow, everything else is very much grounded in reality. They even stop to mine Tylium for fuel a few times.

the Mark2 Vipers, the one Starbuck crashed at the end are relics from the first war, 40 years before this one. The Galactica is also from that time and was minutes from being decomissioned when the Cylons returned. The parts needed to restore those old systems were no longer being made by the time of the miniseries and the Galactica was at the bottom of the supply list. The strap breaking represents that as does the fragility of the vipers. There are no spare parts except what they can make themselves, there are no replacement soldiers/pilots, they have what they have and that's it. Everyone is learning their new roles and positions in this fleet. At best, for now, they can keep themselves alive but the thought of anything else is a dream.

Thoughts on your comments on the editing choices. Ron Moore was adamant about creating a sci-fi show that did not follow the stereotypcial tropes of most sci-fi shows up until then. No predictable plot lines, no "bumpy headed aliens." Just the drama of these relatable humans running for their lives. Very much a military drama set on an aircraft carrier. It just so happens the "aircraft carrier" is a spaceship.

I always assumed it was to add even more emotional depth to the argument- you know there is love there, so what would happen if she died and his last words were those of anger to her. Also- perhaps the build up is to call into question the length Adama would then go to rescue her? “She killed my son let her rot” would not be an unexpected type of response that soon after the revelation. Basically, Starbucks in some sort of trouble- let’s double the perceived danger if she’s at odds with her champion.

I love the way this show pays tribute to the original! The container the late pilots were spinning was known as a lifepod in the original. A life support bed from sickbay.
The layer camersoles imitate the egyptian-esque collar on Fleet uniforms.
There's only one Boomer. Hundreds of identical twins who look like her, one of whom was recruited to pretend to be her with Helo. I refer to her as Sharon-2.
The line "I love you like a daughter" alludes to the male Starbuck's backstory, when he was an orphaned child adopted by Adama. Also, Starbuck's romance with Zak alludes to male Starbuck being engaged to Athena in the original.
The original quickly gets away from the disaster, & leaps into adventure. The most recent attack on US soil had been the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor. It was decades in the past, & most Americans had only hazy memories of that attack.
This show was made only a few years after 9/11. America being attacked was visceral & real. *We don't leave the disaster!* This show is all about survivors coping the loss the only way they can.

but of course this went over both of your heads... sad!

You talk about the "two Boomers."
You may find it easier as the series progresses to refer to the one on Galactica as 'Boomer' and the one on Caprica as 'Sharon.' They are two very different characters as time progresses.

Yeah. This show has a plot, but it's mostly a character show.

For some reason, S1E3 is not on your YT. Did you get a copy strike?
Oh, and btw, with this series? I have but one piece of advice, to have you abate your worries. Expect to be entertained. Expecting to be disappointed leads you to all kinds of speculations that we who have watched this series know are just entirely off. You can't know, of course. So, no spoilers at all, but gentlemen, please, expect to be entertained. I promise, you will not be disappointed. And when you get to the end, you will be salivating for "Caprica." Wait and see.

I like your Star Trek reviews, but with Battlestar, man. I don't know why you're bothering. It's very obvious that you didn't like the miniseries, didn't like the handful of episodes you've seen so far, and are absolutely predisposed to not like the show full stop.
I don't know if it's because it's just not in your wheelhouse or you're finding the storytelling to jarring compared to TNG, but it's obvious that you hate every second of it that you see. I don't see that changing anytime soon and its a very frustrating watch.
    Sorry, guys.

My sister watched Buffy, I found the whole concept ridiculous, but then I watched half of a later episode as she was pottering about and I ended up hooked. So I’d say give them a chance to give it a chance.

Prophecy plays a role in this series. I've always seen Starbuck's crash being shown as something that had to happen.
