I was one of the folks who watched Angel before Buffy (or evening knowing that it was a spin-off of Buffy). I think it was this ep that I realized it and then tried to get caught up on the eps that I missed.
Actually the Buffy reactor Domi watched Angel Season 5 before any of the rest of the series, so she had all these crazy spoilers in her head that she didn't even understand. 🤣 You'll have to wait til you finish the whole Buffyverse before you can watch hers.
Seasons 3, 4, and 5 iirc. Also the S2 finales, because she watched for a certain person. She doesn't have a ton of spoilers I think, as she forgot a lot of it. Still though, shouldn't watch til done with angel because she does mention some future stuff, sometimes vaguely, occasionally.
One of the few times I adore the Bangel relationship. It tugs at my heartstrings because the actors show how much they have loved working together and haven't been doing that regularly since the end of S3 and now their characters are going through a breakup on more levels than even in _The Prom_ BtVS episode, which never tugged at my heartstrings. To me, that was just a need to be done moment. Angel choosing vampirism is just another layer to that episode's needful breakup, but this was the always the crying moment.
This was a real 'heartbreaker' of an episode. Great writing again, but the writers know how torture the viewers. Brilliant acting by both SMG and David Boreanaz at the end of the episode similar to BTVS SE E10 Amends at the end where Angel is trying to kill himself after being mentally tortured by The First Evil. This acting here is so intense he actually whispers and calls her Sarah, oh and keep those tissues handy for this show! We all thought this episode was heartbreaking.Great reaction again, having seen both show many times I have to to say the very best episodes are Angel are just off the charts.
One of the few times we got hate mail. We also got a lot of chocolate and peanut butter we couldn't eat because no one wants to die because of a crazy person.
The advantage of watching the show years after its final air date is that you know Angel has more seasons to come, and it's highly unlikely that Angel would remain human all that time. Those watching the episode when it first came out did not have that knowledge. The possibility of him staying human was a real one for them, until the episode's ending. I first saw Angel on dvd, so I would fall under the first category.
And from this day forward, any discussions Buffy and Angel might have, Angel will be reminded of this day, while knowing Buffy has no idea. Buffy can move on, but Angel can never forget. No wonder he broods all the time... Note that it isn't just this "Army of Darkness" that is at stake; as a vampire, Angel has been doing a lot of good fighting supernatural threats, relying on his supernatural abilities. If he stayed human, who knows how many threats that he would have stopped instead end up killing who knows how many innocents? As a champion he is called upon all the time to stand and defend or save others... He could probably do some of that even as a human, but he could also just end up dying soon. As a vampire he could save people for decades, even centuries.
Ahh I did expect this one to leave you sad 😢 With the launch of Angel the writers were willing to have a darker feel and some sad moments. You've still got loads of fun episodes to look forward to though!
I see your point, although it's highly unlikely someone would watch this episode without knowing the shows a spinoff of Buffy. Interesting to think about, though.
I want you to make a point to remember (no pun intended) what Buffy said when she was curled up in bed with him. She said "just what I wanted. A normal boyfriend." She claims she wants to be happy in the arms of a nice normal boyfriend. Here, she gets wrapped up in the moment in a blink of an eye with Angel, yet back in her world she's at the early stages of getting to know Riley as a potential boyfriend. Imo opinion, I think there may have been an echo of this day somewhere in her mind or even emotions. ...Like a haunting feeling you can't put your finger on. It seemed so unfair and even more so it seemed torturous to Angel. I mean, the powers that be speakers could have at least put in a 48 hr clause in that spell that said Angel will also be released from that memory 2 days later. ..But it would cheapen the moment's impact from that end scene.
There was an under lying post relationship theme set into both shows; Starting with the 'Fish out of water', to Buffy micro analyzing relationships, to Angel getting dragged of to a singles bar, etc, etc etc, ending in this; 'The we actually had a good relationship, except for this one thing'. This story allows both to acknowledge this, deal with it, and finally, move on.
The worst thing about this episode since the day it aired is “cookie dough fudge mint chip” ice cream 🤢 There were defo people who watched Angel first, my mom was one of them. I was obsessed with buffy and forced her to watch Angel with me when it started. The big thing is that the show (buffy) was so big at the time that people who didn’t watch it still knew about it and so these episodes weren’t as confusing.
Avoiding being honest with someone about a decision that effects them is really disrespectful. That Buffy won't remember doesn't matter. Angel would still have to carry the memory. Even if he didn't it'd still be dismissive of Buffy as a person. There was no way for it to end happy. Angel would've felt guilty about deceiving Buffy (as he should). "Why watch her go through that?" "...just enjoy your time with her..." So, why didn't Angel choose not to tell Buffy something that she had the right to know in order to make things easier on himself? Which it wouldn't have because he's a decent person who respects the one he loves. 'Why put her through that?' & 'Let her be happy until the end.' aren't any better. They're simply justifications for not telling someone something that they should be told. No different than Angel not telling Buffy that he was in Sunnydale. Whether or not something is for someone's own good (particularly an adult someone) is up to that someone -- not anyone else. It would seem that Angel learned his lesson. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
smg is the goat of crying scenes. 😭
"That was the end of Angel and Buffy, thank you so much for watching"😁😄😃. You're doing some great reactions!
The fact that that scene made David break character when Buffy was crying and he said “please Sarah please it’s okay” instead of Buffy 😢
Yeah, SMG is so good she actually effected David in that moment. Probably helps she's a *massive* Bangel shipper, so the scene was a big deal for her.
Sarah Michelle Gellar can break your heart.
Ah, i will remember you. Or as I like to call it.
Emotional damage the episode.
The end of this episode is heartbreaking.poor buffy
at the end buffy isnt tortured with the memory... poor angel.
@@einstini15 of course poor angel my comment comes from seeing buffy cry , its just heartbreaking to watch.

Oh that must've been so strange!
Thanks for the double-post, Vic. I just finished watching your Buffy reaction.
Fun fact: The ice cream on the chest scene was improv. The drip off the spon was an accident, David just went with it, and Sarah followed his lead.
In this episode, we discover that the Gypsies were mere rookies at revenge.

Yeah. This episode is Angel's _Becoming_ moment. Where he needs to choose between love and duty.
I was SO sad!

Typo, SE => S3; adjacent letter typos get me all the time. :)

It never made sense to me why Angel even told Buffy. Why watch her go through that? Why not just enjoy your time with her and end it happy?
