These guys were my first concert in 1972, I sneaked out of the house to see the concert. When I came home, I was grounded for a month. Was it worth it? HELL, YES!
What I love about this inside look is how Lake and Palmer are intent upon serving what is essentially an Emerson composition, trying their best to complement its essence, not show off their own chops, which are substantial. That coherence is what makes a supergroup like ELP work in ways that others don't.
I really like when we're able to see them rehearsing, and enjoying coming up with the music, enjoying each other, smiling and laughing. I really like the early videos when they were just starting out, you see them looking at each other on stage, smiling and laughing and it's wonderful to see. Such a shame it wasn't always like that for them. By the time they got together to do the tour with the orchestra they would barely smile or look at each other on stage. The were all so talented young men. I miss Greg and Keith.
Dan Moser all tree of them were really beyond great Greg had his voice which is precious and Carl was a work horse and yes Kieth was a genious csnt spell that cause im only average smart lol
Rehearsing? No! They were literally composing in real time! Rehearsal is what you do when you have the song already. This is WAYYY more valuable footage than just a rehearsal
During the Lyceum Theatre concert in 1970, in the middle of Rondo, he broke a stick, and smooth as butter, with his other hand still flying away, he pulled out a new one and kept going.
Oh, they had to do actual WORK to create this masterpiece?! It's so organic and perfect that one might think it just appeared out of thin air for them.
@@jumphawk8836 ~ You got that right sir. I'm disheartened and bewildered that it all went away, and unlikely to ever return. Truth be told, it couldn't come back that way. No one could do it!
Great to see that just like any pub band, they go from nit picking each others parts, to messing around playing blues, and able to have a laugh at rehearsal. The only difference being the skill level! Never forgotten Keith.
"This chord here..I think it's B", "B what?", "You may well ask..!". Ha! Fascinating post - it's wonderful to see a glimpse of the painstaking work they undertook to create that seemingly effortless, fluid madness. Great stuff!
"B what?" indeed. This exact point in the final recording they ended up keeping something of Lake's over flat 7 voicing (the A), even though Emerson seems to be asking for the root right there (and on this video for whatever reason registers 1/2 sharp as a C chord). Maybe Lake is just anticipating where this would be going; what sounded good. Awesome to watch this collaboration, especially in view of the masterpiece that resulted.
brings me back 30 years when i was a teenage elp nut trying to work out on the piano just about everything Kieth and the boys put out there---great stuff,,a treasure
1:50-2:35 is one of the most powerful and inspirational 45 seconds in prog rock history if you ask me...breathtaking....I'm 26 years old and I feel so fucking cheated to have missed this kind of originality and talent. Maybe one day like the Italians had thier Renaissance in the Middle Ages, we will one day again capture the essence of music composition and leave the dark ages of Nickleback and Kanye West behind!
Rare days here. This is pure art-music., free form compositional style with classical underpinnings. Practically zero people could ever pull this off. Keith Emerson was the brains behinds this trio, they essentially followed his cue and went to mars musically. Incredible discipline and skill. Not always a melodically pleasing product, but astounding musicianship.
That is just simply enjoyable to watch. I've never really experienced any behind the scenes footage of how these people actually interacted with one another on music anyway. Fantastic find.
77; before they had to ditch the orchestra, the choir and the support staff. That I would have wanted to see. Not after. Saw the 78 tour Boston Garden. Way better. The sudden absence of the orchestra really screwed up the live performance in 77.
these guys were pure musicians who put the music first. Ahead of selling records or having their names on the front of magazines, ( no internet).Lake did have reservations about the music.Later he did voice his opinion in a loud way and thus the 3 went there seperate ways.Fascinating to see how they once were. I was in awe of them back in the seventies.
Listening to this without the lyrics, I can hear more than ever how much of a story the music itself tells. It could be an outstanding soundtrack for a short feature. Even with two instruments (and drums), it's amazingly orchestral and grand.
I'm absolutely stunned by this vid. Over 30 years i was living on the few albums which were publicly available. With the internet more and more came available (music and vid) and now i'm witnessing the CREATIVE process on Karn Evil 9. Many, many thx to the poster!!!!
Such casual brilliance! "Oh yeah, we should make this diminished instead of major" And so young! Prodigies, all of them. They create an entire genre without even knowing what they wrought.
freedumb2003::PRECISELY... they created their own fckN genre as far as I’m concerned, and I know MANY others feel the same way!! It’s all here in UA-cam!!!!!
Anyone know if that jbass is what ended up on the final recording? Perfect tone, and brilliantly played and recorded. Really breathes, plenty of fret, pick and string, perfect balance, frightening really...
They were traveling so speed with their sound, ahead of their time, there's no other band like this, at this time, getting the full atension of the people, getting fill a stadium, and maybe never we've got something like this anymore.
Was an ELP fanatic in the 70s. And heard plenty of "Who?" if I mentioned them while passing a bone or a beer. Yet they sold out every time, everywhere....
Tony, this is when I started listening to music....this is interesting cuz you see the rehearsal and the finished product in next one, and yes I DID go to that concert in1974.
Timeless! Cannot imagine a world without this music. Always new and I am enjoying their work 'from the beginning'. It will last and the infuence will grow. Arvydas, you with your 26 years make my point that the future will prove me right. Cascabel: Beethoven also was once simply a guy, less friendly though but also a great musician. But as with Emerson -and in a certain way also Palmer- that does not make him a less renewing and brilliant composer.
I'd never heard Keith or Carl talk before - not even at the one concert of theirs I saw. I think it's a shame they didn't sing, because they both sound like natural high tenors. What a lovely compliment that would have made to Greg's huge and sometimes haunting baritone. I know, they were all about instrumental music, but what a shame Keith & Carl didn't sing more! (I admit, I'm not very familiar with their catalog, but Greg was the only one with a mic on him when I saw them live.)
Estos son los momentos en la historia de la música que hay un antes y un después. ELP es sin duda, uno de esos grupos que logran hacer una sintesis y proyectarla muchos años adelante. Abriendo caminos Gracias por ponerlo en línea.
Hi Flippywarrior. The two impressions are( the opening segment) is 2nd Impression and 3rd Impression begins at 0:53. They then go back to rehearsing a portion of 2nd Impression, with Carl playing on the temple blocks.
Note the large cymbal resting up side down on the skin of the tympani. That's a unique special technique percussionists use for a very dramatic swirling sound effect. You strike the cymbal and it rolls around on it's bell. The kettle drum amplifies the sound and the pitch can be changed up and down with the tuning pedal.
That is correct, Keith used Leslies, almost everywhere. You can see them on almost every live video, if you look carefully. Concretely I know that he had a Leslie 760 he used on early performances such as Rondo, Pictures at an Exhibition. On CalJam you can see it clearly, he sometimes uses it on fast speed.
there is a dvd out called "works" live montreal aug '77, for a tv program. the bonus, flip side of the disc is "the manticore special". a program for "brain salad surgery" filmed in the spring tour of 1973 including other parts of this footage and more. aired here in the states in jan,1974 whats here, looks like extra material not used
it's very interesting that this is captured on film. I like a lot of the stuff that didn't make it on the record. btw, that's 3 Leslies that I can see behind Keith including an old highboy [the tall one] looks like he painted them all white....
You can buy it, and other ELP DVD's through ELP's website, or, probably get it even quicker if you buy it through Circuit City or Best Buy. It is a MUST have for any ELP devotee.
Note about playing «without looking». With most instruments, when a player reaches a certain stage of aptitude, their eyes no longer play a major part. For example, when you do giant leaps on a piano, you don’t have time to look and aim, it’s all translated into the kinestetic sense of muscle memory. Great examples are Debussy’s final Etude for piano, or look at Yuja Wang playing Stravinsky’s Three Movements from Petrushka here on YT.
These guys were my first concert in 1972, I sneaked out of the house to see the concert. When I came home, I was grounded for a month. Was it worth it? HELL, YES!
YAY for KATHY2trips !
Three incredible musicians at their absolute peak. RIP Keith Emerson :(
RIP Greg Lake as well
What I love about this inside look is how Lake and Palmer are intent upon serving what is essentially an Emerson composition, trying their best to complement its essence, not show off their own chops, which are substantial. Our Mozart and Bach-amazing all these later. Nothing close to this today- RIP Keith and Greg-keep playing Carl
I really like when we're able to see them rehearsing, and enjoying coming up with the music, enjoying each other, smiling and laughing. .. he seemed super-human to me at the time, yet he was as human as any of us.. I shall miss you so, Emo ... crying my eyes out for you .. :(
Dan Moser all tree of them were really beyond great Greg had his voice which is precious and Carl was a work horse and yes Kieth was a genious csnt spell that cause im only average smart lol
Rehearsing? No! They were literally composing in real time! Rehearsal is what you do when you have the song already. This is WAYYY more valuable footage than just a rehearsal
I think this was already on tour, so the songs had been already recorded.
YES - THEY'RE MAKING KARN EVIL 9!!
This needs to be preserved, catalogued, and kept for our children. I am VERY amazed to see this. Must see ELP!!❤
Who in their right mind can dislike this???? Someone whose parent's spent their music lesson money on cigs maybe.
Only 15 trolls so far, this is a great video, elp did things right....with class
1:02 Gotta love drummers - in the middle of drumming, without missing a beat, tightening up a loose cymbal wing nut...
During the Lyceum Theatre concert in 1970, in the middle of Rondo, he broke a stick, and smooth as butter, with his other hand still flying away, he pulled out a new one and kept going.
@@themaritimegirl he hits hard too. Even on the drum synths.
Crying of joy, this is such a great song.....they are at their peak!
Even during rehearsals & sound checks they sound phenomenal.
Oh, they had to do actual WORK to create this masterpiece?! It's so organic and perfect that one might think it just appeared out of thin air for them.
Greg Lake - a very underrated bass player. He pulls nice a tasty runs without watching his fret hand.
Greg Lake, Glenn Cornick, Tom Hamilton. My top 3 bass players.
Hey look mom, it's real musicians, who write, and play their own instruments!
Son, those aren't just musicians, they're gods.
....this must be from the olden days of music mom!....
Dont see that anymore
@@jumphawk8836 ~ You got that right sir. I'm disheartened and bewildered that it all went away, and unlikely to ever return. Truth be told, it couldn't come back that way. No one could do it!

Great to see that just like any pub band, they go from nit picking each others parts, to messing around playing blues, and able to have a laugh at rehearsal. The only difference being the skill level!
Never forgotten Keith.
Palmer mentioned once, that fence sitters were not welcome, creatively. Bouncing ideas off each other was what those guys wanted.
Elp was the best live performance I have ever seen. Saw them 3 times and every time I thought I was sitting in the studio with them.
"This chord here..I think it's B", "B what?", "You may well ask..!". Ha! Fascinating post - it's wonderful to see a glimpse of the painstaking work they undertook to create that seemingly effortless, fluid madness. Great stuff!

Greg Lake didn't always land on the root... (As you made note above) He loves dodging around on 3rds and 7ths creating some cool tension
brings me back 30 years when i was a teenage elp nut trying to work out on the piano just about everything Kieth and the boys put out there---great stuff,,a treasure

1:03 carl takes a moment to tighten the wingnut on his ride cymbal WHILE playing.
Taken from the DVD 'Beyond The Beginning', with optional subtitles in several languages.
Sad year for those in the ELP family.

i wish i was alive during the Prog Rock glory days of the late 60s to mid 70s all those bands especially this band and Carl Palmer are my heroes
I saw it all thru a stoned haze that was the 70s. Would not trade that time for anything...
a great man lost !
RIP Keith.
they were on a whole other level..I suppose that`s why some people had a problem with them..I always loved their musi
What a fantastic piece of footage, a big thank you to you for uploading this.
Just.....
Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Simply brilliant. An oasis in a desert of 70's music. I had the pleasure of seeing them play live in 1977.
77; before they had to ditch the orchestra, the choir and the support staff. That I would have wanted to see. Not after. Saw the 78 tour Boston Garden. Way better. The sudden absence of the orchestra really screwed up the live performance in 77.
Carl was 23, Greg was 26, and Keith was 29 at the time.
creation of a great music from 3 fabulous musicians. we want more from this stuff... thankss
This is a great vid. I love seeing the creative process musicians take to crete their music.
