I read an interview with Keith Emerson in the time after Brain Salad Surgery. At one point he said, not proudly, "I've come to the point where it takes me six months to write a song".
I strongly suggest that you listen to After Crying 1990-1996. No copycats whatsoever, but they have cited ELP as their biggest influence along with King Crimson. What they did between 1990 and 1996 could make ELP and Robert Fripp (and anyone else) envious.
The brilliant Emerson showing them how to play it ! Emerson was the genius , Greg was the song bird and the personality, Carl was the only 🥁 drummer who could keep up with Keith ! And I , See the show !
He was a fabulous bass player and much underrated as such. Of course he wasn’t the typical standard rock’n’roll grooving bass player but just listen to those basslines he played. He really broke ground along with the likes of Chris Squire.
When I first heard about ELP it was 1974. I remember hearing that he was considered to be the best bass player in the world. To think that he wasn't even a bass player to begin with and he reluctantly picked it up because one of his previous bands needed a bass player!
This video captures the rare spark of genius … all 3 men are astounding … the complexity of the music is beyond comparison … this is truly a gift to humanity.
Three talented musicians that were brilliant at taking classical music and making it accessable to the masses. They were all in their 20's too! There aren't too many in the new generation who can even get to this level. Rest In Peace Keith and Greg. Bless you Carl for carrying on the legacy. ❤️ Keith is a genius in all levels. The man just excelled in whatever he chose. Greg, was a beautiful singer and guitar/bassist ( and he was so handsome)! And Carl is just a beast on drums and today can still play at this level. He is also a very good artist.
Sorry but it was not written on the spot. It was rehearsed on the spot. Everything was already written in Keith's mind. You can clearly see that he teaches the other two the parts that he wrote for them. If you need evidence look at who is credited for the piece on the album.
Geniuses in the making! From Tarkus to Trilogy to Brain Salad Surgery, Absolute fantastic Prog Music. It would be decades later that proved how important ELP was for the music world. No one since has come close.
It is so fun to watch the process of working out the various parts of a recording that mean so much to so many of us. To think they put that much work into their songs, the intricacies of what they were doing, with so much care and lack of ego.....not knowing if what they were doing would even resonate with an audience. I'm a big fan of their patience with each other. I sure wish there were other videos available of my other rock heros from back then.
Having just finished recording this tune, Karn Evil 9 2nd Impression, with an International Collaboration band (featuring Rachel Flowers) I can truthfully say with confidence that this is one complex piece of music Keith composed! The part where Keith and Greg are working with Carl on Carl's high-hat cymbals is indeed tricky, and takes time to perfect. The video of the band playing this tune will be posted in the near future. Rachel, of course, nailed it on the piano!
It's so cool to have a tape with this video and sound quality of elp recording. That's not something common in any band. Especially this one that has almost 50 years
Flagging up the dislikes, appropriate here ..... why oh why??!! This is a musical masterclass. When Keith says to Carl 'Yeah you can get away with it that way' and Carl cracks up, priceless. Oh the innocence of youth, but they did it, all by themselves. BSS was their zenith for sure.
@@glennjamin I do agree with that aspect, but looping and droning digital cheats take away from the connection of playing every single note and having to create all of the sound from the fingertips and relying less on the computers

Thank you for putting this out there! What a joy to watch them working, happy and easy together. I realized almost at the end that I had been smiling almost throughout.
There's only one other three-man band that had so much creativity and proficiency. I do not think the world will see again such examples of artistry and mastery as ELP and Rush.

What an elegant trio. These guys were behind the times ... drugs had already taken their grip on the generation that should have elevated this band to greatness.
Didn’t they achieve greatness? 78,000 fans attended their concert in Montreal in 1977 and they sold millions of records. And their music is great (to say the least) in itself IMO.
The way Keith plays it for Carl with the sticks on the hihat is a little confusing I think. He's playing L-L-R, L-L-R, L-L-R. If he just said, 'Count it as 2 4 beat measures' I think that would've made it easy. It works if you count it that way. Greg is having a little trouble too, but they're creating this on the fly and changing it as they go, so that's understandable.
Here we can see how far musically speaking Keith Emerson was to other musicians ..Almost a genius! Acá podemos ver cuan lejos musicalmente estaba Keith Emerson del resto de cualquier músico..Casi un genio!

Even watching them rehearse in a studio is amazing. Hats off to the forward looking people who filmed this.
ELP were simply incomparable.
Nothing before or since even came close to their staggering level of sheer musical proficiency.
this video really shows gregs prowess on the bass. something he never got enough credit for

There are some great musicians these days, but most are pure shit LOL.😄
greg lake's bass is so unmistakable. his bass playing gets criminally overlooked
Seriously impressive. I couldn't imagine trying to play this piece, never mind composing it and working it out with the band.
