I was listening to the 3-vinyl LP "ELP Live" with my classically trained son and he turned and asked, "Who is ringing the bell in the drum solo?" We looked it up and were stunned to learn that Palmer rang the bell with his teeth. I've never seen any drummer come close. ELP forever!

Among the best technical rock musicians ever. I first saw ELP on their first US tour (1970 at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, IN) with Keith in his B3 and Moog stabbing glory. They opened for Humble Pie (Pie's next to last show before recording Live at the Fillmore), headlined by Johnny Winters (with his brother and Rick Derringer sitting in) - festival seating, $5 ticket for a 3.5 hour concert). I was also fortunate to be at Cal Jam 1- Carl with his full drum kit, pagoda rising from the floor and Keith strapped to a grand piano, rotating end for end 25' in the air to start their 2nd set. Well worth the wait. All told, saw them at least 10 times.
I feel sorry for those who did not experience the best rock era ever (disregard disco). No tape loops, no autotunes, no frills - just a group of musicians who had to be able to play their instruments, one chance to get it right and these guys DID!

I've listened to various drum solos by different masters from rock, jazz, whatever, over a pretty long period of time (60s - 2000s) and the only drummer that can do a 5 minute drum solo and keep people gazing at what's happening, in my opinion, is Carl Palmer. so many of their songs push at pretty high tempos, and he rattles off 32nd notes like they were nothing. MAYBE he wasn't as versatile as a drummer like Neil Pert from Rush, who had to play to so many types of music considering all the styles they played, but I haven't ever seen a person play THAT form of rock, which is rock/classical fusion and make it smack you in the face like Carl did, and I haven't seen a person play any faster. But more than anything else, that drum solo he perfected over his years in ELP is simply awesome. It's a drum song. In an interview he talks about the voice of the drums, just like a singer. Carl, you had a GREAT voice and best to you always for enriching the lives of those who enjoyed your playing.

My sister watched this concert in Dallas. The sound was in a variation of quad, but had even more channels because she said the sound would move around the room, so I imagine they had 6 channels for the sound, which at that time was unheard of. At the end of this song, when the synth is going and keeps getting faster, you see in the video the cheapo visual with these silver wings coming out of the robot and the lights flashing. She told me that in the stadium, the sound effect made it feel like the building was taking off, and the explosion hit you so hard that people were stunned by it.
I don't think they could really duplicate that at this concert, since it was outdoors, but MAN! It would have been awesome to see that live.

🎉I saw them on the big screen when
"Picture's at an Exhibition" was shown
as a full length movie. Then in 1977
They did "The Works Tour" with a 80 .piece orchestra. That show was in
Milwaukee and we were one of the first
stops. I was in the 10th row, They did it all including Karn Evil 9 I mean
it was one for the ages. With The Conductor rising from the floor to
start the show with "Fanfare for the
Common Man" to Keith's on his piano
    doing somersaults to Carl Palmer's
incredible drum solo on Karn Evil 9
    with a hydraulic stage equipped
    with strobe lights underneath.
All this while Carl was rotating 360
degrees with 2 mallets light on fire.
Top 5 concert of all time.
Also, By the time the tour hit Chicago
with the 10th show, They had to cancel
The Orchestra. It was just to expensive
to do the tour that way.

Saw them 3 years after NY MSG WNEW 10 th Anniversary. I had loge seats from ticket Tron right up on the band. Up until that concert I thought Carl Palmers tank was automatic- two guys rotating it. Carl Palmer waved to us we were that close Scott Muni, Alison Steel. My row passed a Doobie down like during one of their hits I took two good drags and it was almost the end of the concert I think it was Karen Evil. Could of been the middle. Pot was great back then. 😅

Was one of my earliest concerts when I saw them at the Spectrum in Philly back in 1977. They did not disappoint. It was also back in the days where you could get a contact high just by being there! 😂 Saw them again in Sacramento in the 90's at Cal Expo. That's when it was Emerson, Lake & Powell. They played well, but the energy, on stage & in the crowd, that existed the first time I saw them wasn't quite there. That seems to be common amongst the "got to make the alimony/mortgage" tours. 💸

I saw ELP in 1979. When we walked into the venue we saw two walls of JBL speakers. I’d never seen anything like this before, and we knew this was going to be an amazing event. It was to say the least.

I actually saw this but it was at the August Jam 1974 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. I was 19 and they were co headling with the Allman Brothers. MDA made us think we did not see the flying piano and the wings coming out of EMerson’s computer. It was one of the highlights of my life.
