Somewhere in the universe is 11 year old me, watching this live on my black and white TV, Queens NY. Now almost 62, I'm left with tears of the joy this band brought me, and the sorrow as my time on Earth grows shorter. ELP were like God's to me. I never imagined I would get old, to write this in September, 2024. But I'm so thankful it lives in perpetuity, here on UA-cam.

In April this year (2022), it will be 48 years that my husband attended the Best Concert of his life, "The California Jam". ELP was Great, as were the other bands that played that day. He was in college at Arizona Western and his roommate and teammate on the football team and several dorm friends hopped in a car and headed to Calif. to listened to the the Greatest Music of this Era (70's). When he plays his albums of Rare Earth, Deep Purple, ELP, The Eagles, & Black Sabbath (I know the were a couple others), he will talk about this concert. Great Memories!!!

I was at Cal Jam in 1974 with a group of friends. We managed to make our way to the front before ELP started (which was a feat in itself). At one point Keith Emerson and his organ lifted into the air and started rolling forwards, over and over. My friend and I looked at each other to make sure we were both seeing the same thing. We had been partying since the sun came up that morning, and who knew what was real at that point. ELP was the headliner for this Cal Jam, and this was the peak of their success.

I saw them in Springfield Ma. around 77 and I remember his organ arcing side to side shooting red sparks out of the bottom I was so close I could feel them hit me right before it exploded and the big cabinet in back with the oscilloscope disappeared probably beneath the stage I too had been parting and was ready to pass out right before that happened and it sure brought me back to life.

He was exhausted. One of his drum sets was beautiful and it may have been this one but he had at one point 4 gongs and the church bell that hung up above him. It weighed half of a ton. Ringo Starr has it now. He only had the steel drum set for one tour and he had gotten the makers to engrave animals in it like a bird and a jackrabbit. It was very pretty.

According to what the official CalJam site published on its Facebook channel, each group could request a copy of the original tape from ABC of their concert, obviously paying for it. That's how Deep Purple did it and that's why today on their official site you can see their performance in full. ELP unfortunately did not reserve its copy; After some time ABC re-recorded those tapes, losing the content and that is why only incomplete and low-quality parts survived.
