Nonsense. The Bible makes it clear you shouldn't do it but no where does it condemn a suicide to hell. You go to hell by not accepting Jesus as your savior.
Sad loss - Keith was sensitive, and eventually trolled to death by his so called fans. He had a medical condition brought on by his dedication to the keyboards and at the age of 71 this amazing pianist felt the need to commit suicide, because he couldn't play like he could 30 yrs ago. Shame on the fans who trolled him.
Agreed. But those trolls coudn't give a damn. I met Keith in Liverpool and he was a nice , humble, guy and the Liverpool audience had a laugh with him which he enjoyed.
The scum that trolled Keith were not "fans". I hope they all end up somehow disabled worse than Keith and then maybe they'll understand what he was going through, although I won't hold my breath waiting for any of them to realize what horrible human beings ( ? ) they are ! RIP "Fingers" AND RIP Mr. Greg Lake. Two of the greatest musicians in rock history !!!!
Having been the culprit who detuned Keith's piano for this session of Oscar's Piano Parties at the Shepherd's Bush TV studios I have to take issue with most of the above comments which favor OP against Keith. Oscar was a very genuine and caring individual who was gracious at all times and of course the consummate professional who exhibited the utmost compassion for all musicians, as far as I was aware. After this particular concert he invited me to his home where I tuned his piano. (contd.)
great enhanced HD video . Emerson was to the rock hammond what Hendrix was to the guitar, and what Gene Krupa was to the drums. This rare footage of the giants of rock and jazz keyboards preserved forever.
Oscar Peterson is a jazz pianist genius.Keith Emerson is a great rock/blues/jazz pianist also. They are different but why compare ,.Enjoy!! Both combined talent and hard work to get where they are. But Peterson cannot be denied as one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time.
Two giants in their selective music fields. Part of the beauty of music is diversity and interpretation. To get critical here..Keith and his bandmates seemed abit nervous....who wouldn't be with a master like Oscar Peterson watching you play and performing across from you. After listening to this a few times, I realized that the drumming and bass playing with Keith's ensemble did not have fluidity that OP's did ( some timing issues). There is a stiffness there. When Oscar comes in the music seems to breath. Oscar's fluidity in the jazz idiom is masterful and his ensemble was impecable.. That said, this is a wonderful thing to see and hear. Both men were extraordinary talents and gave of themselves a hundred percent to their audience.
Complete bs. I don't know what you mean by fluidity, the bands are playing totally different things. Keith is playing hard boogie, why Oscar is playing more jazz/blues with precedence towards jazz voicings. Nervous? Hardly. I don't know if you play but this is not a particular hard rendition by any means, anyone there can play this song with their eyes closed, on multiple instruments. This is not something they get "nervous" playing.
C'mon guys, this isn't a competition, they aren't even playing the same style in this track, I consider that great and that is why I like this version so much, listen to the music as a whole, not as "keith vs oscar with backing musicians".
in the UK we rule the keyboard genre...Emerson, Wakeman, Lord.....All greats, but Emerson in my humble opinion is the better showman and has a greater diversity of styles.....But Peterson......well the man is a god of pianos.......look at his left hand.....
Well now just a minute here. Keith and Mr Lord are gone and Wakeman is long retired. Loved them all esp Keith. But Jordan Rudess currently holds the Heavyweight title in the multi genre keyboard arena. And Rachel Flowers (Google her) is currently performing Emerson's music better than anybody has ever done. Pretty sure they are both from the USA although I should probably check that.
Ci mancava Ritchie Svliatoslav e avevano fatto Bingo
@MorbidManMusic I'm no drummer and I can't tell. I was just saying Carl was the right drummer for Keith Emerson as he was very fast. Carl has recently been awarded drummer God of prog. I don't think he can't keep time. Are you American , by the way?
It's not a contest because it couldn't be. Boogie woogie from someone that grew up around it, and playing it with some of the top players of its era. The difference is in the execution. Speed vs finesse, both done excellently.
Peterson is as far, for me the best of the two pianists: much more improvisation, and his bassist plays a real walking, whereas Emerson always plays the same things, and his bassist doesn't play a real walking!
Emerson said he was extremely nervous playing alongside Peterson, most players would be. Peterson uses an octave walking bass pattern here which he rarely used in the trio format. Emerson said Peterson was a big influence on him, I think here Peterson returns the compliment by imitating Emerson's left hand playing style.
Peterson had a good body, arm and hand posture. He was really well classical trained.Keith had classical culture, but his posture has some problems.Listen to the difference of sound(not to talk about fluidity of timing and swing...)
Emerson is pretty much the greatest rock keyboardist of all time, both in terms of performance and composing. But Peterson is probably the greatest jazz pianist of all time, and jazz has been around a lot longer than rock. BTW, both of them were hard core lovers of Bach's music.
You know...it's ridiculous to say one played better than the other. It all depends on what you value. If you're going for staying faithful to Meade Lux Lewis' original song, then Keith Emmerson did the better job, as he played it note for note the way the song was written. If you're going for tasty jazz improvisation, then you have to say Oscar Peterson did the better job finding a groove and making it sing. I just love seeing them trade off sections and do completely different, yet awesome riffs with their turns leading the song. Peace.
+Les Les: This is a fine comment. Oscar's sounds fresher and more mellifluous due to our not having heard his improvisation on this, whereas we have heard Keith's rendition many times; for as you had said, and is the truth, it is played note for note.
I love Keith Emerson as one of the best multi-keyboard players of the 20th century..............but Oscar is just sitting there like the shark in "Jaws" waiting for dinner.
@@Minotauro_di_Chieti wisely said. These guys are more fans of Oscar Peterson than connoisseurs of both works. Most likely do not know the Classic Emerson Works, only ELP. ones, which are just majestic.
I love the emotional contrasts in this performance. Emerson is palpably concerned, smashing that bass like a pounding heart. He’s a rhinoceros while OP slinks through the rhythm like a snake. What kind of jungle has just one? Long live Lux Lewis!
Lake and Palmer) ??? Salut!!!
Yalic Nurdov Tu as raison Yalic.
That's what I noticed also. I am a diehard lifelong ELP fan, but I must say that Keith seemed nervous, while Oscar was just jamming and enjoying himself.
a very interesting footage! Carl Palmer is in a Jazz trio with Keith! see the two great player's style is so different. Oscar Peterson is truly a technician, and Keith is a great performer.
Line-up: Keith Emerson (R.I.P.) - keyboards Carl Palmer - drums Roy Babbington - bass & Oscar Peterson (R.I.P.) - piano Martin Drew - drums Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen - bass
Comparing them is pointless. Peterson was one of, if not the greatest jazz pianist of all time, if not artistically (Art Tatum #1 IMHO), then at least technically. But he knew nothing about progressive rock. Emerson on the other hand was almost certainly the greatest rock keyboardist of all time, mainly in terms of unique often almost Dadist style (especially in his pre-ELP days with The NIce) and his incredible classical/jazz/blues/rock melded composing. Yes, Emerson did some traditional jazz work, like here. But in fact, it was really pretty light weight. So comparing them would be like stating who between old school Rembrandt or abstract genius Pollock was the best painter.
Hard job to play with Oscar - it sure took guts. The only thing that irritates me is that Oscar with his band played a different rhythm. Keith did a boogie whereas Oscar was basically swinging. But ok - that´s hairsplitting.
wow you truly are an idiot anonymusum. still waiting for your big day when you perform for us all. even dave brubek must have not noticed what you have about keith when he mentioned blue rondo was actually played by eith the way dave originally wrote the piece. who else will you cut down? Oscar seems to need pointers from you as well. cant wait for people to air your performances so we can see your enormous talent.
Obviously the only thing you can do is insulting. And the last thing I would do is to upload some tunes here on YT for people like you. Pearls before swines - you know. - Back to topic: It is obvious that both bands playing different rhythmical styles within one tune - so to say. That was the only thing I mentioned. If you can´t hear it - well ok - that seems to be normal. But it´s strange that this neutral com inspired you to offend me.
just didn't think it ws in good taste to cut keith down on a video where people were paying their respects to an amazing musician who recently died. that's all. found you nothing but insulting. I could give a shit about where you studied. good luck.
I think Keith had subconsciously locked himself into 'safe mode/ straight bat/ defensive' playing here, and let's not forget that this was actually Oscar's own show ('Oscar Peterson invites' on BBC - released March 1977). The cordiality of OP was immense, I just wish KE would've relaxed enough to show his 'moves'. Even the stars get star-struck :?
Emerson: nice technique and really fast. But, thats it. Peterson: outdoes Keith at all with the few performances he does here. So tasty and classy. A class of its own.
Great footage here everyone . Both having fun of course . Both of these guys are gone . Have respect its not about being the best its about living for that moment . God bless them both and my god it must be one hell of a show up there 😉👍
Look at how relaxed Oscar's hands are and how tense Keith's are. That says a lot about why Keith had so many deep problems with his chops in later years but Oscar kept blowing to the end, even after arthritis had begun eroding his style. Kudos to both great keyboardists, though.
Keith looks like he took all the speed before this performance :D Talk about being stiff! Oscar of course is playing his tasty licks in a normal relaxed manner here but Keith is just rotating the same stock licks. Of course ,playing with Peterson, one might get little drained.
A lot of people blowing smoke here. Allow me to say this. I knew Oscar Peterson. I considered him a friend, and I assume he considered me a friend. I had a concert hall named after him. So, perhaps I knew him well enough to say this: Oscar *never* played with sub-par musicians. Ever. if it wasn't good enough, he wouldn't play. And so, if he played with Keith Emerson, it was because he though well enough of him as a musician to do so. Therefore, good enough for OP, good enough for me.
It was not a competition and not meant to prove anything. Keith was invited on to 'Oscar Petersons Piano Party' by Oscar himself as he was amazed at what KE could do. I mentioned before that Rick Wakeman was one of OP Piano Party shows playing synths and OP tried and struggled. That also proves nothing.
Still watching in 2019 and still can't get over OP's left hand walking bass line and Keith's consistent rhythmic left hand..if you wan't to be the best piano player, you got to have that left hand of theirs, not just lightning fast speed right hand solos..and some to think of it, if you know these greats well, their left and right hands are interchangeable.
Magnifique !
+Mrphilharmonic Believe me - it takes long, very long. The secret is: You must bounce with your wrist, what means you must use the backward-up-movement of the keys and transform that into speed. Keith generally plays it with raw power and that´s what ruined his right hand. I wonder why his left hand still works. Maybe because our left hands have more strength due to the average stuff they have to play.
+anonymusum You nailed it. Keith was playing almost entirely with the upper tendons of his hand. I'd never seen a side shot of him playing piano like that before and it's pretty clear to me what happened to his hand now. That's not good technique on an organ keyboard, but on a weighted keyboard it will kill you.
+Sidney Barrett Yeah - it´s a sad story as he´s got so much talent and self-discipline. I once read that he took some lessons in the 80s and his teacher tried to teach him a better classical technique - unsuccessfully as we know now.
+Sidney Barrett It was nothing to do with technique (though bad technique is never a good thing to have). The guy got dystonia, a condition that causes involuntary contractions of the fingers. It's just pot luck if you get it, no rhyme or reason to it, but can destroy careers for musicians.
Little known fact... Why it says "a heavily disguised Carl Palmer on drums" is because he was tricked into attending. Keith Emerson told him that he was taking him to the Zoo and the next thing he knew he was stuck at this "Piano Party". Awkward!
@spamfighter Even though i find it hard to believe you, you are totally right about about Oscar. He wouldn't play this unless he knew exactly what he was in for.
+Azyx Oscar Peterson was a huge hero to Keith Emerson, and one of his major early influences. It must've taken a lot of courage for Keith to share a stage with him. Certainly Emerson would agree that he wasn't in the same league as Peterson. However none of that takes away from what a fun and inspiring performance this was. BTW Peterson did experiment with synths somewhat. Wonder if he called on Keith for advice?
+Azyx Or maybe the man who composed Tarkus, The Endless Enigma, Trilogy, Karnevil 9, etc, wasn't particularly interested in putting all his energy into playing 12-bar blues.
p. 4 Both were displaying their own genius without stepping on any toes. I think both are pretty humble. Both were showing each other respect. Both are worthy of respect. Many modern musicians have been influenced by both of them. Emerson was probably influenced directly by Peterson. I doubt Peterson felt like this was just charity either. I think he was known for his humble nature and open mind. He also collaborated with Classical musicians.

Emerson was great, Peterson was simply on another level.
Oscar so easy, so fluid ...
In fairness to Keith, this wasn't really his main area of expertise.
@@taffyjones281 I think that's the kindest way to put it. ;)

OSCAR PETERSON AND KEITH EMERSON-SIMPLY SENSATIONAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow I always thought Emerson Lake & Palmer were just a good rock group I never knew the members were such proficient Jazz players 😲
C'mon guys, this isn't a competition, they aren't even playing the same style in this track, I consider that great and that is why I like this version so much, listen to the music as a whole, not as "keith vs oscar with backing musicians".
Both these guys are incredible and I think it is interesting how "tense" Emerson's playing is compared to Oscar's.
same thing i was thinking. this is Oscar's normal pace.
in the UK we rule the keyboard genre...Emerson, Wakeman, Lord.....All greats, but Emerson in my humble opinion is the better showman and has a greater diversity of styles.....But Peterson......well the man is a god of pianos.......look at his left hand.....
Nonsense.
Absolutely!. The other two are miles behind with their scales and arpeggios posing as music 😩
RIP Keith Emerson, you were the best! (1944-2016)
Ci mancava Ritchie Svliatoslav e avevano fatto Bingo
Only Carl Palmer is fast enough on drums to keep up with Keith Emerson
+Gabriele 95 ....verissimo.....molto bravo Palmer
Keith asked Carl to go with him because he was so nervous of going on his own :)
@MorbidManMusic I'm no drummer and I can't tell. I was just saying Carl was the right drummer for Keith Emerson as he was very fast. Carl has recently been awarded drummer God of prog. I don't think he can't keep time. Are you American , by the way?
Brilliant video isn't it ... two of the worlds best.
R.I.P.Keit. Play your piano for the Angels.
It's not a contest because it couldn't be. Boogie woogie from someone that grew up around it, and playing it with some of the top players of its era. The difference is in the execution. Speed vs finesse, both done excellently.
I think that it was Emersons first time on television. He said in his autobiography that it was a daunting experience.
Oh look who's playing drums in the background.
Peterson is as far, for me the best of the two pianists: much more improvisation, and his bassist plays a real walking, whereas Emerson always plays the same things, and his bassist doesn't play a real walking!
+Sean Henry I definitely agree with you !
No words can describe this brilliancy
Emerson said he was extremely nervous playing alongside Peterson, most players would be. Peterson uses an octave walking bass pattern here which he rarely used in the trio format. Emerson said Peterson was a big influence on him, I think here Peterson returns the compliment by imitating Emerson's left hand playing style.
Especially generous of him considering most of the breaks were given to Keith, and his piano is even set lower than Keith's.
David Fruechting Yes you're right. Emerson was a great player, but very few have the elegance and grace Peterson brought to the piano.
I don't think Peterson gave a hoot. He knew he was the man.
Peterson had a good body, arm and hand posture. He was really well classical trained.Keith had classical culture, but his posture has some problems.Listen to the difference of sound(not to talk about fluidity of timing and swing...)
slapmyfunkybass Even the greats are capable of humility.
Amazing to see these two great talents having some fun together!
+eddyvideostar Thank you very much, my friend. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so :)
Keith Emerson plays the notes but he's pretty stiff/mechanical. Listen to the original.
Keith was a wonderful musician and Oscar clearly had a lot of respect for him but... Oscar's trio is the highlight here, swinging their arses off!
Peterson is pure CLASS. And Keith is very good.
He's so loose and has great feel. He's my piano frame of reference, more so than Herbie Hancock of Chick Corea of that era.
wow how sad, passed away today at 71 !!!
It just brings tears to my eyes
Not two people I ever thought I would see playing together, but as a fan of ELP as a kid, and Peterson later as a young adult, this is GREAT to watch!
I love Keith Emerson as one of the best multi-keyboard players of the 20th century..............but Oscar is just sitting there like the shark in "Jaws" waiting for dinner.
But then the shark got swallowed up by a killer whale lmao.
"...best multi-keyboard players of the 20th century." .... UA-cam most idiotic comment!!!
@@Minotauro_di_Chieti wisely said. These guys are more fans of Oscar Peterson than connoisseurs of both works. Most likely do not know the Classic Emerson Works, only ELP. ones, which are just majestic.
These guys had it all. What a talented bunch. R.I.P. Keith Emerson.
And Oscar, too.
I love the emotional contrasts in this performance. Emerson is palpably concerned, smashing that bass like a pounding heart. He’s a rhinoceros while OP slinks through the rhythm like a snake. What kind of jungle has just one?
Long live Lux Lewis!
Emerson played precisely like this on the recorded version, so I doubt he was at all concerned.
@@ChrisLawton66 playing exactly like the recorded version is what prog guys do when they are scared
@@GolumTR yeah...sure.
@@ChrisLawton66 Thanks. Since you’re getting into Emerson, I recommend the album Nice by The Nice. The Nice is the famous band Emerson was a part of.
@@GolumTR I'm aware. I saw the man in concert 5 times. He must've been quite frightened each time I saw him.
Lake and Palmer) ??? Salut!!!
Yalic Nurdov Tu as raison Yalic.
….. davvero…..
Keith and his band play totally barrelhouse, and Oscar and his band play totally modern jazz for contrast, cool video!
Best keyboardist jams along with The best pianist. Thats so cool!
Whos Oscar..
Two Best Pianists!
Oscar just sounds so relaxed, it's incredible.
That's what I noticed also. I am a diehard lifelong ELP fan, but I must say that Keith seemed nervous, while Oscar was just jamming and enjoying himself.
But since Keith was in the presence of one of his idols, I can understand his being nervous.
Keith Emerson is like a bird in a cage, going from pole #1 to pole #2 to pole #3, then back to pole #1. Peterson is a free bird flying.
+Fernando Hatsumura What do you mean?
@Donde Merlin who cares ?...different styles n genres entirely...its not a competition....anyway, Emerson was a better composer
RIP Keith. Let's play with Jon and Oscar in Heaven!
Grande
Bravo!
a very interesting footage! Carl Palmer is in a Jazz trio with Keith!
see the two great player's style is so different. Oscar Peterson is truly a technician, and Keith is a great performer.
GRAZIE molte KEITH,x tutto quello che hai dato
Reaggea
Fantastic performance by two legendary artists.
Line-up:
Keith Emerson (R.I.P.) - keyboards
Carl Palmer - drums
Roy Babbington - bass
&
Oscar Peterson (R.I.P.) - piano
Martin Drew - drums
Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen - bass
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
I could give a shit about where you studied. good luck.
Olecranon Rebellion where did he cut down Keith
I think Keith had subconsciously locked himself into 'safe mode/ straight bat/ defensive' playing here, and let's not forget that this was actually Oscar's own show ('Oscar Peterson invites' on BBC - released March 1977). The cordiality of OP was immense, I just wish KE would've relaxed enough to show his 'moves'. Even the stars get star-struck :?
Emerson: nice technique and really fast. But, thats it.
Peterson: outdoes Keith at all with the few performances he does here. So tasty and classy. A class of its own.
Apparently Emerson was really nervous during this performance.
Incrível!!! Oscar Peterson e Keith Emerson.
Emerson became a fine jazz pianist as time went on. At this time and in this genre he is not in the same universe as Oscar.
Fantastic, Emerson and Oscar.
THE TWO GODS OF UNIVERSE OF PIANO. MAY GOD GODS BLESS YOU GODS! FOREVER BOTH
No comparison, please. Keith is great as a prog rock pianist but Oscar is Oscar, if you know what I mean.
Still watching in 2019 and still can't get over OP's left hand walking bass line and Keith's consistent rhythmic left hand..if you wan't to be the best piano player, you got to have that left hand of theirs, not just lightning fast speed right hand solos..and some to think of it, if you know these greats well, their left and right hands are interchangeable.
still watching in 2023
Magnifique !
Keith Emerson looks as nervous as a piano student playing for his teacher.
I just don't know how the heck Emerson keeps his left hand going like that.
You must love Dave McKenna's work then.
Little known fact... Why it says "a heavily disguised Carl Palmer on drums" is because he was tricked into attending. Keith Emerson told him that he was taking him to the Zoo and the next thing he knew he was stuck at this "Piano Party". Awkward!
RIP and thanks from Italy
@spamfighter Even though i find it hard to believe you, you are totally right about about Oscar. He wouldn't play this unless he knew exactly what he was in for.
Emerson ( and the bass player and the drummer) sound so robotic in comparison to Peterson's band holy shit thats class
+Azyx has dado en el clavo ¡¡
Keith Emerson was talented but Peterson was a genius imo
+Azyx
Oscar Peterson was a huge hero to Keith Emerson, and one of his major early influences.
+Azyx ...Of course Keith is covering the original Meade Lux Lewis arrangements. He didn't practice it enough and Keith should have just improvised..
+Azyx Or maybe the man who composed Tarkus, The Endless Enigma, Trilogy, Karnevil 9, etc, wasn't particularly interested in putting all his energy into playing 12-bar blues.
p. 4
Both were displaying their own genius without stepping on any toes.

Competition is for sports and other dim-witted pursuits! It has no place in music!
Totalmente ! Killers
Meu amigo!
Is that Carl Palmer on drums?!
Yep!
Great to see Oscar holding back like the gentleman he is and giving Keith a break...
