Yeah, popular culture was much edgier then - it was kind of pre-health&safety, pre-political correctness, etc. Today in 2024 I don't think one would have a pop singer crooning "which d'you choose, the hard or soft option" while dressed and made-up very obviously to look like an H-addict.😵💫
It's the survivorship bias effect- you're less likely over time to even remember or have exposure to the bottom 50% of 80's songs. The 80's become less associated with the copious bad music from the 80's and more with the stuff people still want to listen to.

You had to be from the eighties to realise and appreciate how different this was to everything else around at the time. A true masterpiece that had an impact on music for the rest of the decade. Like a lot of eighties music, it sounds as fresh and modern as anything today.

I realized whats so great About this song, its so atmospheric, the tidal flow of synths, the syn horn solo, along with the punchy electronic drums and thick ynth bass and lyrics create a real life story thar literally puts you there along with the video, that first 30 sec or so, one of the best song openings ever, such a vibe

I'm only 20 years old. And my father is a man who is now 54 years old, ex Raver/DJ which he largely practiced in the 90s. Anyway, he still got his record collection around 7000 black discs and still in good condition. I was brought up with those records, mostly Techno/Acid/Hip-Hop from the 90s. But I recently discovered the upper part of his record collection & that is the 80s section that he bought as a child/teenager. & so I came across 'West End Girls', I asked my father... Who are The Pet Shop Boys? His answer was: Legends! And I came to the conclusion that he is right! Awesome songs, and West End Girls is my favorite!

Maybe my age has something to do with it, the phases of my life, but those years seem to go together as a set or have some common thread between them. Hall & Oates were tremendously popular in the 80's, but to me don't have an 80's sound at all. On the other hand Sting's "Fields of Gold" sounds totally 80's.

At that time, we received this song through radio transmitters of neighboring countries because there was no free music in our country. Anyway, he still got his record collection around 7000 black discs and still in good condition. I was brought up with those records, mostly Techno/Acid/Hip-Hop from the 90s. But I recently discovered the upper part of his record collection & that is the 80s section that he bought as a child/teenager. & so I came across 'West End Girls', I asked my father... Who are The Pet Shop Boys? His answer was: Legends! And I came to the conclusion that he is right! Awesome songs, and West End Girls is my favorite!
