There's something about 'West End Girls' that embodies the duality of the 80's-a mix of carefree energy and the anxious anticipation of a world on the verge of transformation.

😮to me it's an existential cry for help and hope in a world that constantly tries to forget u. It takes me back to my old hi school and that neighborhood. It had one dive bar country no less. Always wondered how the people coming out of that bar got on in life. The bar was called Lucifer's then later Lil Nashville

A pushpin to keep your place in Life. Two left feet (and both on the same ankle), and even I could move to this.
".... A good beat, and I can dance to it" fumbled into the mic by sooo many BANDSTAND alumni. Somewhere, DICK CLARK is smiling.
The soundtrack of a lot of people in the 80s. Dark enough to make you dance, think, and feel all at the same time

I'm only 20 years old. And my father is a man who is now 54 years old, ex Raver/DJ which he largely practiced in the 90s. Anyway, he still got his record collection around 7000 black discs and still in good condition. I was brought up with those records, mostly Techno/Acid/Hip-Hop from the 90s. But I recently discovered the upper part of his record collection & that is the 80s section that he bought as a child/teenager. & so I came across 'West End Girls', I asked my father... Who are The Pet Shop Boys? His answer was: Legends! And I came to the conclusion that he is right! Awesome songs, and West End Girls is my favorite!

I remember going to school, I had to walk across town and play that song on my walkman, it's a song that fits perfectly that environment, walking by every store, every cafe..people going about their day, you catch the whole vibe of the city in one glance everywhere you look.. and that song just carries you along perfectly.. great song...

For me, it's like the 80's lasted from about 1983 until 1993, musically speaking. Maybe my age has something to do with it, the phases of my life, but those years seem to go together as a set or have some common thread between them. Hall & Oates were tremendously popular in the 80's, but to me don't have an 80's sound at all. On the other hand Sting's "Fields of Gold" sounds totally 80's.

It was the best time for everything. The 21st century so far doesn’t compare. Questionable how much of the 21st century remains given global warming, dying democracy, anger and malignant hate.
