Lyrics:
You always wanted a lover
I only wanted a job
I’ve always worked for my living
How’m I gonna get through?
How’m I gonna get through?
I come here looking for money
(Got to have it)
and end up leaving with love
Now you’ve left me with nothing
(Can’t take it)
How’m I gonna get through?
How’m I gonna get through?
I bought you drinks, I brought you flowers
I read your books and talked for hours
Every day so many drinks
such pretty flowers, so tell me
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I…
Since you went away I’ve been hanging around
I’ve been wondering why I’m feeling down
You went away, it should make me feel better
but I don’t know how I’m gonna get through
How I’m gonna get through
You always wanted me to be something I wasn’t
You always wanted too much
Now I can do what I want to forever
How’m I gonna get through?
How’m I gonna get through?
At night, the people come and go
They talk too fast and walk too slow
Chasing time from hour to hour
I pour the drinks and crush the flowers
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I...
Since you went away I’ve been hanging around
I’ve been wondering why I’m feeling down
You went away, it should make me feel better
but I don’t know how I’m gonna get through
How I’m gonna get through
We don’t have to fall apart, we don’t have to fight
We don’t need to go to hell and back every night
We could make a deal
What have I done to deserve this?

I got to sing with her at a piano bar in the 80s… I was in the Navy and had no idea who she was at the time.
I just knew she had an amazing voice. I looked and sang like Georgia Micheal… they would introduce me as him when I sang 😂

Dusty aka Mary O‘Brien was an absolute powerhouse of a vocalist. The collaboration with PSB was absolutely fantastic.

What a shame she died so early

It drives me nuts when people dare to refer to Pet Shop Boys as "one hit wonders." These guys are STILL GOING! Their body of work is impressive.
So true! 👍
They are one of the reasons that made new wave jams exist ❤
They had quite a few good songs.
They had multiple huge hits off their first album ... let alone what came after ... "It's A Sin" is an all timer
I've never, ever heard of the Pet Shop Boys referred to as one hit wonders. Maybe that's an American thing. Here in the UK they're as popular as ever.
I saw them in concert two weeks ago in Athens. My 18 yo daughter who knows all the lyrics of the PSB songs was with me. It was pure heaven. It was unforgettable.
Awesome 👍👍

I got to sing with Dusty in a piano bar. I had no idea who she was at the time, just knew she could sing really good.
I remember, too. I was 11 and I had got my own record player/dual cassette tape deck/radio for Christmas. I recorded music off of the radio all night while doing homework and reading YM and Sassy! And Michael J. Fox was on the cover of Teen Beat!

She is spectacular. Reminds me of Grace Slick in both looks and vocal range.

It is absolutely amazing. How many great songs the Pet Shop Boys produced. And it still sounds great. Nothing dated about it.
This is true. And whoever arranges the music in their songs is a genius. Just listen to the intro to "It's A Sin". Who thought of that and composed the sound?
The great, late, Dusty Springfield in duet with Neil. She adds color and soul to it and soars in the second half of the song. I'm so glad the PSBs believed in her and pushed for her to be on the record with them. It brought Britain's most talented female singer back to the spotlight where she belonged.
RIP, Miss Dusty.
She was a great...So were the Boys...💗🌟
Unbelievable talent DustySpringfield. I didn't even know she sang the songs I loved till all this smart phone era
Both acts so underrated
Couldn't put it better myself.
Very well said. Dusty Springfield was a true vocalist. Makes you appreciate music even more. Now everything is synthiszied.
Great collaboration of Pet Shop Boys and Dusty. This was a dream duet. RIP Dusty, she is as much of a treasure as they are.

I remember Dusty Springfield, in a blog, writing about her illness . She suffered from breast cancer. I was very impressed by this. Dusty died in March 1999. Two months after her death, my sister Anneke was diagnosed with breast cancer. A very dark period had begun.... Anneke died in December 2002. Seeing this video makes me feel good. It's good to see a cheerfully singing Dusty.
I did not know this. Love Dusty’s work.
did they die from being on the same breast?
So sorry for your loss
😢
West End Girls was their biggest hit, but for me, this will always be their best song. And a big part of it was because of Dusty Springfield.
I agree....her voice is so incredible.
Ursprünglich hatten die PSB Tina Turner im Kopf, aber dann wollten sie nicht wegen Tina einen Hit landen, sondern wegen der Musik. Aber ich kann mir auch Tina sehr gut dafür vorstellen.
Originally, the PSB had Tina Turner in mind, but then they didn't want to have a hit because of Tina, but because of the music. But I can also imagine Tina doing it very well.

I'm an 80's kid that HATED Pet Shop Boys. Now I'm 41 and I've finally got the point. Phenomenal band.
Never hated them but, found them mediocre at best. DS brought the Scandal soundtrack to new levels. There were many bands better than the PSB at the time.

What a powerful voice of Dusty. She puts the swing to this song. 👌
I can't get over how great Dusty is after so many years. Her voice. Her beauty. Her presence. No wonder Neil insisted on her and her only for this song. That tells me something I never knew and that is how smart he is.

The sheer volume of great music that the Pet Shop Boys produced is truly amazing. Hit after hit. Classic after classic, and none it has become dated or obsolete at all. It's as cool and fresh today as it was way back then.
This song is so special to me and helped me through hard times like so many other songs from the Pet Shop Boys (Being boring, Suburbia, Domino Dancing etc.)...I was a child in the 80s and Neil's voice gave me so much comfort...I just love the Pet Shop Boys...thank you so much! ♥

I've never understood how someone could worship artists the way people do. News flash the Pet Shop Boys do sit to take a dump, and occasionally they fart, and have diarrhea, just the same as you.

Jennie Rose Yes your music is so fantastic ,above all ,avoid present music like everywhere .
Jennie Rose Petula Clark was my favorite British Invasion artist back in the 60s.
Jennie Rose British music has had it's moments. By no means is it the best in the world...
Was that nasty remark to Jennie Rose really necessary? Music is a very personal thing and we all have different tastes, likes and dislikes. What's to get so incensed about?
When collaborations between two different artists actually meant something and felt special. This song would have been a smash if the Pet Shop Boys had recorded it on their own, but adding Dusty Springfield to the song immediately catapulted the song onto a whole new level. Her vocals are amazing. This is just a masterpiece of pop music that transcends time and space. What a wonderful gift was to be alive when this song was at its peak in popularity.
Yeah, these days collaborations in commercial music are basically the result of a negotiation between accountants.
What did we mere mortals do , to deserve this absolutely stunning masterpiece ? It doesn’t get any better than this ! Rest in peace darling DUSTY XXX
Oh Dusty Springfield can just melt the coldest heart with that voice she was just incredible
Still a banger 40 years later.

I’m glad they included Dusty Springfield in this song. She is truly an amazing singer.
There are two versions of this song/video, with and without Dusty.
The original video for this always included Dusty!

Wow. The Pet Shop Boys. Opportunities, West End Girls, Later Tonight, What Have Done To Deserve This. The album was a Masterpiece.
I need a time machine right now!! To go back to the 80’s and 90’s music was so much more enjoyable with way more talented singers then today!
