@@jadeemerson301although I agree this song fits in better with the 1980s culturally and aesthetically, however I disagree with you characterisation that the year 1990 was also more akin to the 80s. It's s murky thing to define decades culturally, but in saying that I think the year 1990 stands out as a significant marker in the trajectory of cultural trends that we would later define and identify as '90s'. Pop culture in the 80s was larger than life and very camp and theatrical, 90's was also camp but in a more sexual, less 'quirky' way. 90s was defined as a more casual and relaxed counterpart to the 80s, adopting a 'less is more' sophistication. Pop music was becoming more 'urban' with the growing popularity of rnb and hip hop which was just beginning to dominate the charts. New wave was dead by 1989, and a lot of those artists eithef went more Goth, dream pop or they went more techno which was also beginning to make a significant impact on the charts and the cultural shift. Synths were replaced with droaning, distorted guitars with no instruments distinguishable from another in genres like grunge and shoegaze. The stereotype of the gen x 'slacker' was also defined as a significant cultural shift. Madonna's masterpiece film clip to 'Vogue' is a perfect example of this more refined shift, camp but more mature. Same thing applies to George Michael's 'freedom'. Sinead O'Connor's mesmerising cover of prince's 'nothing compares 2 u' dominated the charts in most countries, this song was influential in the 'female singer songwriter' that would become massive in the 90s. Groups like Blackbox were also making their mark on the culture and the sound, especially with the piano house sound that would go on to be a staple in eurodance which exploded in the early 90s. I could write an essay on this but I won't bore everyone to death here.

80s and early 90s was the best music of all time. Night clubs during those years was absolutely the best. The girls just seemed to pop up everywhere. Smiles and kindness was all a growing young man needed. I’m almost 50 now and can still feel the youth while driving on a warm summer night listening to 80/90s music.
Peak of music, music can not evolve since 90s, cause it was peak of evolution, as u can listen all elements in this track are pure electronic, music can't get more advanced since 90s, and now it's only devolution, as u can see trash nowadays that is playing
My grandmother said nothing can compare to the 1920's (she was in her 30's) for music, fashion, lifestyle, etc., even though she was relatively poor. I guess every generation feels that way about the music of their youth.

Completely agree. To some people, that’s the definition of a classic. Something that sounds as good decades after it was released, as it did when it first came out. Timeless music.

Oh, my little girl All I ever wanted All I ever needed Is here in my arms Words are very unnecessary They can only do harm Vows are spoken To be broken Feelings are intense Words are trivial Pleasures remain So does the pain Words are meaningless And forgettable All I ever wanted All I ever needed Is here in my arms Words are very unnecessary They can only do…
My dad introduced me to DM with Enjoy the Silence when I was young, which lead to a lifelong love of the band and their music. I was even born on the day they released this song. He left us yesterday and now I’m crying listening to this masterpiece. Thank you for helping me grieve ❤
I "Words like violence break the silence. Come crashing in into my little world. Painful to me, pierce right through me. Can't you understand? Oh my little girl." II "Vows are spoken to be broken. Words are very unnecessary, they can only do harm." FINAL MESSAGE "Enjoy the silence."
Fun fact: Last night as I lay in bed watching House of Versace, a very fat moth flew into my bedroom window. I located the moth by noticing a loud pecking sound against the walls and ceiling. It was trying to find its way out, apparently. So, I didn’t kill the moth. I gave it a chance to leave as I continued watching the movie. After finishing the movie I played one last song before bed. People are People by Depeche Mode. When I woke up the next morning the moth was gone. I’m assuming it didn’t die and fall behind some furniture😎

I didn't even liked dark music before them but there is something so unique about their dark sound that I couldn't help myself but listen to them on loop!!
Great song. My 14 yr old daughter, is having a really tough time atm and this song in particular she really loves. The Native Americans always said silence is the most powerful form of communication. which decade? 80s or 90s? i think they nailed it in both decades to be honest but this is a bit in the middle as it was recorded in '89 and released in '90…
The Mode at their mightiest. I remember when this came out in 1990, seeing this video on MTV and knowing that I was in the presence of art. They were just on another level with this release.
From the late '80s to the early '90s those were the best years of music in my life. Those were the years of Violator and The Downward Spiral. You cannot beat those two, try as you might.
This song changed my life. I ran 13 miles listening to this. I as soon as I heard it it gave me some unbelievable energy and I stopped drinking after work and began training. I was needing to get fit. Music is what all human beings need. It’s the best energy ever. Love to you all

This song is so unique….I don’t I’ve ever heard another song that makes me feel the way this song does nor another song that sounds like this one…The feeling, the ambiance, the vibe whatever you want to call it in this song is so strong…I’m not even sure what you would call it exactly like whether it’s powerful, beautiful, emotional but whatever it is it’s so strong….It kinda gives me this futuristic feel to it….The building music at the end especially…I don’t know. There are just some songs that you absolutely love but you’re not fully sure why and you’re not fully sure how to describe those songs. This is one of those songs for me
This video just hits on so many different levels. It's atmospheric. It's absurd. It's beautiful. It's sad. It's happy. It's meaningless. Just a brilliant concept set to a brilliant song.
This is my personal anthem as an introvert and loner. At least I'm able to enjoy the silence on my own without all the drama, wrong relationships and wrong people in my life. In some ways, it's good to be a loner because you don't have to worry about trying to fit in or impress people. You're free to be you, free to do your own thing and free to rule your own world as a king/queen just like the lead singer in the video.

@@therenegades7329 in this context, the applicable definition of seriousness is sincerity and speaking in earnest, as opposed to light hearted or frivolous joke-type context. it's pretty close to the depeche mode vibe
"Words are very unnecessary, they can only do harm" Very wise words...sometimes silence and time are the best medicine... Guess you should really just Enjoy The Silence.
I think the biggest problem with words, or a language is the interpretation gets lost in translation too many times. Too many times we greatly misunderstand each other, as in something is said but then taken out of context. Not to mention that we can also misuse these words to purposely do the things that I just mentioned. Its ironic that humans are the only species that primarily use this exaggerated feature from the sense of taste, to interpret & communicate, whereas other species rely on the other senses. For instance, a dog will either like another dog, person, etc etc or not. There is no misunderstanding or miscommunication amongst animals. They cant lie or decive each other. Only us, the most sophisticated, intellectual, & advanced species can do this. And even when we aren't doing any of these, we then completely misunderstand each other.
Absolutely adore this song. Inspired me to hike up a mountain in Austria last summer with a friend. I secretly brought two of the exact same beach chairs, two crowns and two kings capes. We chilled on top of the mountain for half an hour, enjoying the views and this song.

Depeche Mode wrote some of the grittiest and beautiful lyrics. Superb track. 80s English bands were on another level. Timeless masterpiece
Song was made in 1990
@EpicAndrew I am aware of that, I said "80s bands"....
I think Depeche Mode is very underrated.
@@EpicAndrew971990 was still the 1980s culturally.

@@gerryfromthevoid8986 no it's not seriousness , I guess you have a complete different definition of being serious,

"Words are very unnecessary, they can only do harm" Very wise words...sometimes silence and time are the best medicine... Guess you should really just Enjoy The Silence.
Silence is a blessing, especially nowadays. Our minds are cluttered with useless noise and so is the outside world
Words....
@Emanoel Saraiva, idk who you are but you have a suit on so I trust you
It is a paradox, speaking creates some of the same problems that failing to speak creates. It is a fine balance to know when to use words or not, IMO.
Absolutely adore this song. Inspired me to hike up a mountain in Austria last summer with a friend. I secretly brought two of the exact same beach chairs, two crowns and two kings capes. We chilled on top of the mountain for half an hour, enjoying the views and this song.

In my list of the top 10 best songs ever made. I will never get tired of this song.
I listen to it every week.
@@Unclewaynewayne Can’t go a week without listening to it! Completely understand
this IS the best song ever made
I shared it with my children, and they love it. They love 80's music, happy Dad
Wish I could hear it the way it sounded in the 80s. I like Depeche Mode but this song just sounds very 80s to me, though I think some of the melodies would still fly. It’s the synths bouncing around everywhere that my ears doesn’t like. Haven’t listened to it with headphones tho so, maybe just sonics.
I believe that somewhere in the world there are people who feel the same emotions that I feel when I listen to this beautiful song.
yes bro, personally i feel suck loneless and silence.. And everyone is king for own soul, heart..
There definitely is... *Raises hand*
Indeed my friend
We are all one . Made of the same things and vibrating at the same frequency.

_This_ is synthpop. Unearthly, magical, almost cosmic-sounding instrumentals juxtaposed against profoundly human lyrics.
Synth anything is just bliss. :D
