I modified the small blade on my huntsman for carving, after finding this channel, hadn't even thought of it before. I'm an engineer, so it wasn't too daunting, but I still tried it out on an old spartan first, so I would agree that it's a good idea to do that, not just to make sure you don't make any mistakes, it also gives you the chance to try it out first to see if it's really a benefit to you before modding your main knife. Good luck.

THE BEST WAY TO USE THE WIRE STRIPPER
    - If you can be careful enough not to cut yourself and have a lot of wires to strip, leave the blade opposite to the wire stripper open, if possible (depends on the particular model). Also, my description is from a "right-handed" perspective - feel free to swap hands.
    - Holding the wire in your left hand, extend out the piece you want to strip to your right. Place the blade on the measurement and make one slice across the top of the insulation.
You may need to lay the wire on a hard surface.
    - Put the wire stripper notch exactly under the slit you just cut in the insulation. Bend the end of the wire downward a bit, using your right thumb to pinch the piece of the insulation against the edge of the wire stripper notch.
    - Holding the wire firmly in both hands, pull away with your right hand. The piece of insulation will tear loose and fall away.
    - I have done a lot of wiring in my life, much of it professionally, and have done this many, many times. Once you get the hang of it, it's quick and easy to do on most common wires.
I found you only need to cut one side, one cut. If I have a two or three strands of wire to strip, I will lay all two-three wires down flat, use the large blade to make the cut across all three at once. Then, I fan them out - STRIP STRIP STRIP - they are done. It takes longer to explain than to do.

@@FelixImmler With your vast knowledge and experience with SAK's I would like your opinion on the larger "swiss tool" by victorinox that folds open into pliers. I wish it used the hook from the Compact, with the nail file on the edge. But I am happy. Guten tag Felix, I think the original intention of Victorinox was for the blunt slot feature to be for just for insulation removal after cutting through with a knife blade. Your modification is much improved complete solution.
I unfortunately lost my SAK to the security at Gatwick Airport about 5 years ago - I wasn't aware it was lurking in a fold in the bottom of my Victorinox rucksack and they spotted it on X-Ray. I said, "Oh there it is, thanks very much, I thought I'd lost it..! Then they confiscated it and gave me a receipt. Would have been £50 to request return of it and I regret I never did. Hence finding your channel while researching to belatedly select a replacement. I think it was at least 30 years old and comparable to the Ranger. It had a name on it like Matilda or similar..? I miss it..!
I used to polish-up the scratches from coins and keys on the scales with Solvol Autosol. Also good for returning the blades to mirror finish after unavoidable sharpening scratches. I use different grades of stones & wet and dry sandpaper taped on a really flat block of carbon fibre and finally crocus paper before the metal polish.
Am enjoying the series ferry much - sank you and vell done..!

1:08 I believe you can use the tip of the large blade to cut it off. You just pin the wire between the notch, the SAK body and the large blade, then rotate until the coating is cut (notice that these two tools are placed always at the opposite sides of all SAKs to allow this).

I’ve stripped wire with the unmodified notch on the SAK. I used the small knife blade to cu through the insulation, then used the notch on the bottle opener to push the insulation off the wire. But your modified notch looks as though it would work with more different sizes of wire. And it definitely seems like a good way to cut cordage.

I use the wire stripper with the knife. open knife, place wire in wirestripper (bottle opener) the close knife over the wire.

I have a Champion [one layer less than the later Swiss Champ] that I had a cutlery store man cut a bevel into the curved inside of the Cap Lifter blade. Cuts thru larger gauge insulation, then the smaller notch can strip the insulation off. Blade still functions fine as a bottlecap popper.

Also if you bend it to 90 degrees and sit the long blade over the wire, it works also

uffff ob das Funktioniert...könnte mit vorstellen dass der Härteunterschied zu gering ist und die Feile schnell die Aggressivität verliert.
