  • In this video, I pour a custom shower pan for my master bath remodel. I cover adapting the drain from copper to PVC pipe, installing the shower pan liner, pouring and sloping the mortar bed, and waterproofing with RedGard, following the methods of Bob Doyle of StarrTile ( / starrtile .

    Over the Winter of 2018, I gutted my tiny master bathroom, moved a wall to double the useable space, and completely rebuilt it from the ground up with high-end finishes like Carrara marble and a smart shower.

    Hats off to you my man!
    On your next endeavor, consider installing schluters troba mat underneath the mud bed and Don't red gaurd on the mud bed.
    This way when water inevitable breach's your tile and grout the mud will wick moisture to the troba mat and send any water on its way to the weep holes of the drain . Red Gaurd is an amazing liquid membrane and thats exactly why it should only be applied on walls and ceilings. That said, ask yourself, where is the water going to go when it breachs your tile and grout when theres a liquid membrane directly underneath them?. The answer is in your Thin Set. Remember, the flange of your drain is positioned at the height of your tile which is above the mud base covered in red gaurd.
    Any trapped water, over time will wreak havoc on the bonding thin set as it relates to the bonding of the tile to the red gaurd.
    Otherwise,
    Rock On my fellow Countrymen!!!!!!
    Your Kicking It!!!

      Exactly. It is one thing to install a system properly ....it becomes another thing when "alleged improvements" are done during an installation without thinking of the possible consequences IF/WHEN a failure occurs somewhere.
      Unfortunately there are a lot of people on this planet who really do think they can do something better ....and they simply can't resist telling the rest of the world.
      That's the downside of many UA-cam posters.

    Your Panliner is not sloped to the drain. You have to preslope your liner too, not just the tile.
    I know that Bob is against the presloping the liner, since I was arguing with him a few times, but sometimes you have to check with more experts.

      And what exactly makes an expert?
      In my mind 23 years and not one failure pretty much makes me one, but if you're talking about book soldiers then you're right, I'm not an expert, I actually think for myself 💪
      I will say this, after Chris called me and I consulted with him I gave him every possible answer whether I agree with it or not, I told him about pre-slope and told him why I didn't believe in it and he had a choice to do it and decided not to, so your assumption that he followed my way to the letter because he didn't know any better is incorrect.

  • @marks9949
    @marks9949 5 років тому +4

    You were close to getting it right...except you did a lot wrong. If water EVER does penetrate through to your liner, then it’s going to sit there, get stagnant, and rot everything out because you didn’t slope the liner itself towards the drain. On top of that, you redguarded the concrete bed. Water will ALWAYS penetrate tile and grout but now it’s going to get stuck in between your tile and that redguard. You have two moisture sandwiches.
    Jeez

    • @pandapanda8354
      @pandapanda8354 4 роки тому +1

      Mark S I thought this same thing! But I dug into his method bc I was like you- I was going “wtf is going on here???”. What I read up on in our code book is ANSI approves RedGard alone as a pan liner! No fooling. If it’s spread at 38mils (dry) then it’s an approved pan liner. They have a diagram of a cross section that explained it all. The water always penetrates the grout like you said, but the redgard is on a slope so it allows that water to get to that drain hole. The water doesn’t get stuck unless the screed wasn’t smooth over the slope. The secondary barrier he used below the slope would be redundant IF his redgard was 38 mils and no pinholes. So based on ANSI, seems like he’s on code with respect to redgard as his pan liner if he’s at approved mil thickness. He’s basically done a redundant liner then pre slope then redgard as pan liner then mortar as slope then tile then grout. After I read up on it, I understood what was going on. I wouldn’t have known this was code, but I suppose the redgard/aqua defense people probably pushed for their liquids to be approved. 🤷‍♂️

      The backer board doesn’t need to be far off the mortar; it just can’t be touching otherwise water will wick up into it and tiles will come loose.
      You can screw through the liner, just not below the level of the curb. That way, water would overflow the curb before reaching those screws.
      But if water overflows the curb, you’ve got bigger issues.
