In this video, we'll use Davinci Resolve 18's Object Removal, Surface Tracker, Object Replacement tools to replace a logo on a laptop and to also replace the license plate on a footage of a car. We'll also learn how to make the changes react to the changing lighting in the environment.

Absolutely agreed. Please change the title to reflect that. You can then add a card showing how to do that in Free Resolve once done. But as it stands, the title is somewhat misleading.

Yes, I'd just mention that. Took me 1 hour between watching this tutorial, downloading the latest DaVinci Resolve, upload my footage, follow the instructions, just to hit the wall -> No Surface Tracker whatsoever on the free version. For US$ 300 there are tons of tools available just for that (specially those based on AI). Unfortunately, this is misleading. And the title wasn't changed yet.
I suspect it can't be done with the planar tracker... But I'm new to DaVinci.

Very good tutorial thanks. One thing all tutorials on tracking seem to have in common is that their tracking always looks good first go. It would be nice to see how best to deal with it when the tracking isn't quite right when you first do it.

I can give you the reason they put stickers on the laptops. It's so they can publish the stock footage as commercial and not editorial. Logo's can't be sold as commercial unless you have a property release from the owner. Commercial footage opens up more opportunities to sell the footage to buyers. Editorial footage can only be used in documentaries & news items.

The surface tracker requires the studio version. If you only have the free version, you can try using the planar tracker. Thanks for watching. 😊

You are not alone in this. I really wish the tutorial creators would differentiate between Resolve and Studio so those of us watching who have Resolve don't waste our time. The object removal tool is not available in Resolve. It is Studio only.

Do we need studio version for this?
Hey! Yes, the surface Tracker is a part of the Studio version. In this specific example, since the objects being tracked are flat, you can get away with using the planar tracker which is in the free version. But if the surface isn't flat, say you want to track a flag that is waving, you'll need the surface tracker.
There are also free third party plugins - check out Patrick Sterling's channel where he has some free plugins that can help with tracking. And thanks for stopping by! :)
I just am making the switch from Premiere to Davinci Resolve, but I have to keep my adobe subscription because of After Effects. But after seeing this as well as Fusion, and I'm curious, do you believe Davinci Resolve can be used to replace After Effects? Or is it still not there yet?
It entirely depends on what you do day in day out with After Effects. I was in the same boat as you two years ago when I made the switch, and I have given up on my Adobe subscription for Premiere and AE. The only apps I still use from Adobe are Lightroom and PS.
AE still rules the roost when it comes to 3D compositing (Fusion is getting there, but not quite), but if what you primarily use AE for is motion graphics and animations, then Fusion can absolutely do it. What I found during the transition was forcing myself to complete client projects in Fusion, come what may, helped me learn ways to do things the "Fusion way" as opposed to being held back by what I knew from AE. Hope this helps, mate! :)
You said you weren't certain why they remove logos...it has to do with both copyright and trademark. You can't show anything in professional or commercial footage without express permission of the company that owns the trademark (or copyright). This precludes product placement. So if the company doesn't have a product placement contract with the producers of the video, they remove the logos and trademarks from the footage to avoid lawsuits. (some companies do it for money, others because they don't want the particular video or footage associated with their product...)

why did you choose to use the surface tracker instead of the planar tracker?
Hi DrHans! :) Yes, in these specific cases the Planar tracker would have sufficed, but I wanted to introduce the audience to the Surface Tracker, as I feel the Surface tracker is a more powerful tool to have in our toolbag. The mesh analysis is really good and It works great when the tracking area is not a plane. But yes, in these two specific examples, we can get away with the Planar tracker.
@@coffeebeanstudio But it's simply the wrong tool for the job since the surface tracker exists for surfaces that morph over the course of the shot. In the final result both tracks were jumping all over the place, so this workflow added the expense for no benefit.
Also they are pages, not tabs.

What laptop characteristics i need to edit in davinchi and so on?
You'll want something with atleast 16Gb of RAM and a discrete GPU. The larger the screen the better -> I'd lean towards a 15 or a 16 inch. If you are in the market for a Mac, a Macbook Pro 16GB should be a good starter.

@@anything7087 Yeah, I'd lean towards the i7 at a minimum. Resolve is power intensive. What you are really paying is for the computer to not be a bottleneck and affect your creativity. The last thing you want is you add an effect, and your system takes 15 seconds to respond. That drives me nuts.

Why did your Fusion changes not appear on the footage when you went back to the edit page at 14:47? It's as if you did nothing at all in Fusion. Did you turn something off?

In 2023 no one show be building nodes to do effects. We are in a drag n drop era davinci resolve need to get rid of fusion and make all effects drag and drop like after effects, when they do t@ they will dominate the video editing software realm..
I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. Almost all compositing software follow the node techniques. It is really second nature once you get the hang of it. Look at Blender, Unreal Engine, Nuke etc... they all use the Node layout. After Effects is great with its layers, but really, under the hood, every "drag and drop" on a layer you do is actually a node. And every new layer you add is a merge node!

Hey Naga. The Surface Tracker is on the Studio version. However, in this specific example, since we are tracking planes, you can use the Planar Tracker (available in the free version) to do the same job instead. So both these examples in this video can be achieved with the Free version.
The Surface Tracker is amazing when it comes to irregular surfaces. :)
