Thanks so much. Glad you are enjoying the course. We've definitely got plans to make more in-depth courses, takes time though to put them together! It's great to have you here.
Again - really well explained. I don't usually watch many fusion tutorials as I find it to be a rabbit hole that just swallows all my time - which would be great, if I thought that I had mastered other things already. To which I feel that for me I might never reach that. But the way you have explained things here, makes me want to start investigating. Great video
This is brilliant!!! I don't think that fusion has this feature, but it would be great if the people at BMD would put in "pop-up hints" where you could get brief tips on how to use various nodes - or the various inputs of nodes - when you hover the mouse over them. Sure, it is one thing to "read the manual" if you are doing a lot of fusion, but for us independent film makers, it is often something that needs to be done sporadically and spasmatically. It's hard to remember what everything in fusion does if you are only RARELY diving in to it.
Leon... This is amazing, I have been watching Davinci/Fusion Tuts for some time now and this is the first time I have seen this simply done and explained well, thank you so much for sharing, sending you both a big "HI🤗" From Luton UK
@@team2films a pleasure to be here... I learnt alot from you a while back in London when we were starting a project there, I worked a bit with your dad on construction too😉
Good Tutorial, thanks a lot. For the paint node I recommend using the single stroke option (on top of the viewer) and switiching to clone paintbrush in the tool window rather than setting the stroke duration to an arbitrary value. That way it will always stay visible even if the clip duration happens to be extended later on. (Also quick tip: mergeing can be sped up by just dragging the output of the node you want to be the foreground onto the output of the node that is supposed to be the background input of your merge node)
Thanks so much! Those are great points, especially about the single stroke option - should have used that option. Sometimes we show longer or slower or more thorough methods (i.e. with the merge node) for the sake of making the teaching clearer to follow. Thanks for watching and commenting, it's great to have you here.
Wish I found this video last week. Had a very complex drone shot with lots of movement. Looking at this... I definitely did it the hard way. Keep up the great work on your channel.
Wahwahweewah...this is amazing! Once again, outdone yourselves with the hyper-clear explanation. However, the thing that I think is the best is that (unlike a lot of Fusion Tutorials) you didn't just stick with a simple, perfect shot but actually used something somewhat more challenging. With phone apps getting better and smarter with object removal, I think showing off the power of fusion on more complex tasks is so much more useful. Well done!
Thanks so much Alex. Yeah, a lot of people have been talking about AI tools, but there’s no substitute for manual compositing with tools like Fusion when working on high end projects. Great to have you here.
This is so well instructed and streamlined. This is a very real world example of something a client would ask for. Would you be able to go into deeper detail on making a noise/grain match? Well done.

You'll want to create a hold-out-matte. You can do that with a variety of tools. including but not limited to.... paint, magic mask, root with polygon. Does that make sense?
Hope this isn't a silly question as it's a great tutorial. Can I use the planar tracker to try to remove an object where the camera was shifting upwards (e.g. in drone footage) over the course of the clip? Trying to figure out how to draw the plane correctly.
That's a good question. Yes you can. The planar tracker method works best as long as the object you are tracking remains infront of (or on) the same plane you are tracking. Otherwise it gets more complicated to paint out.
@@team2films Thanks for the reply. I think this is where I'm having trouble. I have some people on a mountain I'm trying to remove - they are relatively still but the drone went both up and forward (toward the mountain) so drawing the plane is a bit tricky.
Hi thanks for recording this video. I was wondering if the second method could also work for removing drone and its props from the video. I put 360 Insta camera on top of the drone, but then the drone and the props are in the shot. I have tried some AI tools that do great job, but since the props are rotating at fast speed I get flickering in the video when the props are removed.
I think I'm doing the same steps but I run into an issue when I add the paint node. Even before doing anything to the paint node, simply adding it breaks the "invert steady transform" of the 2nd planar tracker node. So the output media is a shifting plane (but NOT the same shifting plane as when just the 1st tracker is applied). I've deleted all nodes and started from scratch multiple times, following each step. Any ideas?
I think something changed since you made this video. When I add the "Paint" node in-between, the clip goes back to being distorted. Have you tried this again recently or have you run into that problem? So close to implementing this and then that happened.
Bro . I'm just getting to start with the davinci on my own without any paid templates . Making some kinda show reel. So I'm using green screen templates from UA-cam. I'm here to learn erasing some thing from that template. I picked up. So thank you I will try now ... Things are good but issue are on usability. Most of the time when I make something which I can duplicate n then reuse the same for another picture or video like a placeholder. I am mostly unable to replace the clip on timeline all the time it happens sometimes not all then I have to go to edit page n drag drop over and then this way it looses all the effects and transitions it also changes the length of the clip all I need to do is replace the placeholder with new photos or video . 2nd issue is..... With the keyboard shortcuts. It won't happen all the time idk it just won't work.. 3rd. If I made any changes in transform to text 3d fusion then I get cropped out view in main output in final . .. then to correct I have to zoom in transform in the main again. In fusion it looks fine but then in main I have to zoom . 4th. Is. When I double click any clip where I have inserted photo if I have replaced it on double clicking I still see a drop down where I see both old and new photos. Why so ? Even if I depete from media I will still see it.
I followed th tutorial, it works nice for one object replacement. I then need to repeat this provess in teh same shot for another object, and the problem is that when to same pipelines connected with merge node, somehow one of the planar tracker invertend node override each other? soit only lets one tree for one spot to be removed . how to make this removal for several objects in same composition?
My brain imploded on this tutorial, but the planar tracker is a difficult concept to understand. Which method would you recommend to hide a selfie stick on a moving skier?
When you add a Paint node you select Multistroke at the top of the viewer and in the inspector in Apply Mode Color you have to set the Stroke duration. If you select Stroke at the top of the viewer and in the inspector select Apply mode Clone you get the same tool that automatically lasts the whole clip. No problems with forgetting to set the duration
Thanks leon 🔥always learning great tips from you, sometimes I need to add another video from my timeline to the same clip that I already work on it in fusion tap .. What if I already worked on clip then I decided I need to add clip then another clip.. Mixing clips before and after clip that I worked on seems hard.. Timing and mixing clips seems difficult because clips are handling individually.. really love fusion but in terms of transition and keeps the all video as one smooth piece it doesn't work.. ex-if i speed an video on edit page then convert it into a fusion clip it transfer well ok nice, imagine travel video clips inside each other and so much speed and masking then I noticed speed isn't right from beginning.. I hope I explained my point.. And I really respect your explanations, and the answer from you will mean a lot to me. It would be preferable if it was in a video explanation.. I think many have this problem that makes us prefer After Effect, but we know that Fusion is much better, But we didn't get enough explanation There is no better one than you to explain and simplify this, Excuse my English language, fan from middle east 💙
Thanks so much for your kind comment. The keyframe panel is useful for retiming additional clips brought into a fusion composition. You can also edit them by selecting the relevant media in node and going to the inspector. Yeah, there are things in fusion that are easier in AE. But the reverse is also true. Working on brining more fusion content to the channel. Your comments and ideas are very much appreciated.
This is great, yet what I don't understand is why it is SO difficult to isolate artefacts or light flares or whatever that roam around. Very small. Little light artefacts. I would love to remove like dirt yet because they are moving it is SO hard. Could you do video showing how to remove this for low light drone shots? I can send you a clip to see if you can do it?!
Removing lens flares will be very difficult as they move around the frame a lot and are not pinned to any of the physical objects in the scene! We'll have a think about how we can demo that in the future though. Thanks for watching.
Thankful for this detailed tutorial although I can't help to think in this day and age and all the AI tools we now have that there would be a much simpler and faster way to do this.
That's a good question. Sadly the planar tracker only works with planar (flat surfaces). Good news though, there's a tool for that! Try the surface tracker. It's amazing for stuff like that.
@@team2films Also, using a bg+merge to create a mask downstream is a bad habit to teach, in my opinion, because a bg's auto-res setting can trip new users up if they're working with mixed resolutions. This would've been a good opportunity to showcase the matte control node.
@@MattMcCool0 @team2films An alternative to the Matte Control node that I use all the time is a BrightnessContrast node. Just enable the Alpha channel and drag the Gain slider to 0.0. Maybe it's just a habit thing but it feels just a tiny bit faster to set up (drop downs are the worst). Mind you, we're talking savings in the sub seconds here so probably not a big deal:)
@@MattMcCool0 Ah, of course! Nice one. Love when there's a lot of different ways to go about things:) That said, the amount of clicks are the same:ish at 2 (once the nodes are added and the BC being one click and one clickandaslide). But, counting sub seconds here again, I find the BC thing just a wee bit faster, not having to try and aim for the garbage matte input. Again, probably a habit thing, haha. On a side related note, about the different paint modes, one major difference between the Multi Stroke and the regular Stroke is that the Multi is all in one bitmap layer whilst the regular one is made up of vector paths for each stroke. From a performance perspective the regular one can, with enough strokes, slow things down. So if one fiddles around a lot while retouching the regular one is the better one as far as I know.
Hello! I think I understand your question... the reason we're not using a simple patch is because the car is moving. If we used a simple or small patch, we'd need a giant patch! If I misunderstood your question, please say. Thanks for watching.
@@team2films I think I understood your answer, the problem we are facing if you use the same tactic as in the first scenario is we need a giant patch in order to cover up a moving car which is not practical at all. Am I right? Thanks for your prompt response and clear explanation. Cheers!
I tried the second version, but when I get to the paint node in the left hand viewer I get a black image. I went back and it seems that if I put the time stretcher node in the left viewer I still get a black image. Why that would be?
I'm so sorry! It's difficult to say without more information. I'd recommend following your node tree backwards to see where the problem is. The first node where the problem appears... that will be your problem. That might be the time stretcher if that 's the first node that gives you a black image.
Sorry to hear you were having a problem. It's difficult to diagnose your issue without more information. Did you adjust the stroke duration? And are you viewing the correct part of your node tree in the viewer?
@@team2films yeah I think it’s bc of how skewed the first image is in the viewer - not sure. Great tutorial I’m just finishing a music video so I don’t have much time to troubleshoot. Just painting out some ceiling lights honestly
@@SHVWNCOOPER Ah gotcha. You might be able to fix that by changing which frame you choose as your reference frame. It's best to do it on a frame where your paint out has the best visibility. For example if the paint out moves in or out of frame, you'd want to set a frame where it's visible as your reference frame (on the planar tracker). Hope the video comes together well.
@team2films I subbed, I'll be back! This is a wide shot with a simple dolly movement. Just removing the light from the back ceiling. lol. i was trying to force myself to stay out of adobe this time but now i'm rushing thanks!
@@SHVWNCOOPER Yeah, when you are under time pressure, it's best to go with what you already know. Thanks for the sub. Btw, a great resource for Fusion tutorials is @CaseyFaris
I'm sure there will be future innovations in this field. Automated tools are great, but there will always be scenarios where manual methods are needed. Hope the video is helpful for you and your work.
In the car example I get to the point where I add the paint node, and I go to start erasing my object, but when I click and go over the object nothing happens. It doesn't disappear. From what I can see all my settings are the same as yours 😑
Thanks for watching. Object Removal is an awesome tool and works great in lots of scenarios. We'll add it to the list to make a video on. Unfortunately, when it doesn't work, it's hard to fix. For example it works well with the tree example, but not as well with the car on the road. It's good to know the more manual methods for when you need them!
@@youvegotgold You are 100% right though, it's super quick and an awesome tool that often does it better! Thanks for watching and commenting. It's great to have you here.
Thanks for watching. What are you talking about? Are you talking about After Effect's generative fill? Resolve has a similar feature. It's important to understand manual methods like this as automated options like Generative Fill will not always work and can produce unwanted artefacts.
I'm sorry, but i will use Mocha or AE for this. In AI Age it should be much faster and Hi-quality. Fusion must be boosted like Davinci Resolve editing tab!
I'm sure even more enhanced tools are on their way. It's good to be able to know how to do this kind of work manually though. As you've perhaps seen, AI tools can be hit and miss. Mocha is a great tool. Glad you are enjoying it.
Great tutorial but way to complicated for me. I hope someday Davinci implements and easier way to remove objects like Adobe AE does. Fusion is way too complicated 😵😵

Ah no! Sorry. I don't think anything has changed. It's difficult to diagnose your problem without more info. Are you still having the same issue?
great tutorial, by the way can you make a tutorial how to do your low third please.
Sure, we'll add it to the list.
Hello! Firstly, thanks so much for watching. Sorry you are having problems! I can't quite picture the problem you are having. Sorry :(
I followed th tutorial, it works nice for one object replacement. I then need to repeat this provess in teh same shot for another object, and the problem is that when to same pipelines connected with merge node, somehow one of the planar tracker invertend node override each other? soit only lets one tree for one spot to be removed . how to make this removal for several objects in same composition?
Sorry you are having difficulty, it's hard to diagnose the exact problem without more information. It sounds like it's definitely doable though.
those pauses and stares
We work hard on them :) Thanks for watching.
Jeez, I hope AI will jump in and save the day by just giving us an easy edit page effect that can do this.
Yeah, AI based tools are making leaps and bounds, but the Fusion page makes it so easy to do this stuff!
thank you so much ♥
This is absolutely brilliant! Thanks! 👍 #MoreLikeThis 🤞
Thanks so much
My brain imploded on this tutorial, but the planar tracker is a difficult concept to understand. Which method would you recommend to hide a selfie stick on a moving skier?
Hmmm. That sounds like a really tough problem to solve. It’s difficult to say without more info.
Great point. Thanks for sharing that tip
are there any media files to be downloaded to go along with video ? thanks in advance
I think many have this problem that makes us prefer After Effect, but we know that Fusion is much better, But we didn't get enough explanation
There is no better one than you to explain and simplify this,
Excuse my English language, fan from middle east 💙
Thanks so much for your kind comment. The keyframe panel is useful for retiming additional clips brought into a fusion composition. You can also edit them by selecting the relevant media in node and going to the inspector. Yeah, there are things in fusion that are easier in AE. But the reverse is also true. Working on brining more fusion content to the channel. Your comments and ideas are very much appreciated.
As soon as I put the Paint node in between, the reverse steady no longer works! I followed every step as in the video. I'm slowly going crazy :D
Can you provide more information? I’m sure there is a simple solution.
Yes, I’m sure those kind of AI tools will be developed eventually, but for now this is a great way of doing it.
how would you remove logos from tshirts when people are moving? Same technique?
That's a good question. Sadly the planar tracker only works with planar (flat surfaces). Good news though, there's a tool for that! Try the surface tracker. It's amazing for stuff like that.
Magic
Thanks
thank you so much
You're welcome!
for some reason the cloned patch is not following the planar tracker. Any suggestions why?
We're not sure! Sorry you are having problems. There must be a reason though. It's hard to diagnose without more information.
3:12 Instead of increasing the duration of the multistroke, why not just use the normal stroke?
Yes, that’s a good idea. Out of habit I often use the multi stroke, but using the normal stroke would have simplified things.
@@elmacox I usually just send an inverted mask into the garbage matte input.
@@MattMcCool0 Ah, of course! Nice one. Love when there's a lot of different ways to go about things:)
That said, the amount of clicks are the same:ish at 2 (once the nodes are added and the BC being one click and one clickandaslide).
Thanks man
Pleasure.

In the second case, what is the problem if you still use a patch of the image to cover up the car like in the first case? Thanks
That might be the time stretcher if that 's the first node that gives you a black image.
i've tried the paint section several times, it's not showing my paint strokes for some reason. going back to after effects.
They gotta make it easier. That is a lot of steps.
Hello. Sorry you are having problems. It’s difficult to diagnose though without more information!
im too stupid to follow along. this is above my brain capacity as a human
trying to get rid of a shadow of someone while using a drone to go around him and can't seem to get it done.
It’s definitely doable! Will probably require some rotoscoping or magic mask in addition to a planar track.
You could’ve used the Object Removal OFX. Less steps and you get the same or even better result.
@@team2films Fair points. I've been using it with not many issues. Thanks for teaching me the manual way.
@@youvegotgold You are 100% right though, it's super quick and an awesome tool that often does it better! Thanks for watching and commenting. It's great to have you here.
After effects be like lol
@MrAlexTech has a great video out about a simpler technique using the object removal tool. It requires a studio license. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/42_6xdbH_-o/v-deo.htmlsi=ZH_CNP_bu0thVzBw
Great job Alex!
@@team2films Thank you very much. Yes it is much simplier but the results in Fusion are so much better. I have found that this tutorial with the planar tracker is amazing and quite easy to follow: ua-cam.com/video/9PHtpkGwPHI/v-deo.html But i have to say that yours is also amazing but i am not ready yet for that level of mastery
@@mastixmastixBernd's @VFXStudy tutorials are excellent. @CaseyFaris makes excellent Fusion tutorials too. They are both masters!
Can you imagine how wonderful it would be if BM decided to knock Adobe in the head AGAIN and create a still image editing app? They would completely rule the market! One can only dream...😃
Haha! Yeah, what a dream that would be :)
I use resolve to edit my stills. It works great
