Fortunately Lead Guitarist Billy Gibbons is still alive and kickin' it hard, along with Drummer Frank Beard. However, RIP to Bassist Dusty Hill, a few months ago, he was integral to ZZ Top's sound, and his too infrequent vocals had real impact. Their early albums laid the groundwork for their 50 year run, and La Grange was one of their first big hits. One of many.
The hat shop ln Ft Worth, Peters Bros Hats, where I worked made hats for Gibbons, Bill Paxton and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca). Mayhew had a hat size of 8.5...which is BIG....And met Paxton with his 14 yr old son... bought him a $400 Indiana Jones 100% beaver hat
That little ole band from Texas never disappoints. Saw them on the tour this song debuted on for the Tres Hombres album in 1973 and they freaked us out with what heavy blues, Texas style, really was all about. Saw them at least 10 times and always a great time! One of the all time greats, more please, try Cheap Sunglasses. Enjoy! 🎸
@Vic Provost I saw them on that same tour! Pre-beards & the only real stage effect was that set of Longhorns behind them. By '73 I had seen everyone from Hendrix to Zeppelin to Deep Purple (heck, even Elvis) & that show stood out, right up there with bigger artists of the time. Saw them again in the 80's & that was a great show too. But early ZZ Top made a bigger (& more lasting) impression on me. 💙☮💙
@@deborahcornell171 Agree, they could walk with the big dogs and play as good as anyone, in their own unique style. God bless for having ZZ Top as part of the soundtrack of my life.
That's awesome. I wasn't born yet when they started out in the early 70's but I did see them in the early 90's during their Recycler tour and they put on a hell of a show. They even had the spinning guitars they had hooked up to their belts.
Yeah you're right about that.... 'drive the song' is exactly the right description.... another guy like this of course was John Bonham, where his drumming cadence really drove their sound - like the Immigrant Song for example .. nice one!
Drummer here...I can't understate how goddamn hard it is to learn that shuffle and keep it tight, yet swinging. Frank Beard and Chris Leighton (from SRV's band) are the kings
I’m from Corpus Christi, TX; I first heard ZZ Top do “Francine” in the late 60s. Loved them ever since. They are kick ass in concert & I had the privilege more than once. RIP Dusty Hill. 💔✌🏻
Saw them at the short concert at the coliseum... but I can't blame 'em. Damn! get your act together and don't be droppin' lights onstage. ZZTOP forever!
This 70s Blues/Rock Band from Texas is one of the all time greats. One of the best "Power Tios" ever. Went to see them in concert Live, in 1977 in Seattle, and they brought down the house.
Bringing down the house is what they do. La Grange did. That little house got too famous. Then the three legged beaver story that destroyed a bar in Mississippi.
I'm an old dude (67) and I go back to the 70's with my first two albums, Tres Hombres and Fandango. I've seen them several times over the years and to me they're the best 3 piece rock band ever.
My mom dated the 4th member of this band in college. He left the band before they got big to be a bull rider cause he didnt think they were gonna make it. Oh how i loved to mess with him about it. He passed about a year ago, but he and my mom were close friends all my life. Hell of a guy. Miss ya buck.
ZZ Top never disappoints. First time I seen them was their Eliminator tour I was 15 or 16 at the time. This was my dad's favorite band back in the day, and still is. Need to do Tush..... R.I.P. Dusty 🤘😔🤘
I saw ZZ TOP at the swing auditorium in '74 '75 '76 & '77. That's San Bernardino CA Orange Show grounds. That's 4 years in a row. It wasn't a large venue. On one occasion the smoke was bothering my eyes so I got up and went behind the seats. I quickly discovered it wasn't the smoke that hurt my eyes when i saw a line of officers in riot gear heading to the doors.. It was in the paper the next day that there had been a riot of people wanting to get in and they used tear gas just outside the doors. (Used to be able to smoke indoors)
When I was in the Army in Germany and we went to the field, we wired a CD boombox to our commo system for the M901 ITV I drove. We played the ZZ Top Six Pack endlessly and it was the soundtrack to some amazing adventures.
1973. In a buddy of mines rusty dependable old dodge pick-up. He pokes the tres hombres 8 track tape in the machine and out slides this song! Wonderful times!
Not long before Jimi Hendrix died, an interviewer asked him who he thought was the best up and coming guitar player he had seen. Hendrix said Billy Gibbons, who went on to form ZZ Top. Can't get a better endorsement than from the GOAT himself :)
These cats paid their dues. They were a hard working band who were loved by their peers and colleagues for years before reaching what most people consider "mainstream" success in the early 80s with the advent of music videos and Mtv! Back in the 60s early 70s not too many people were hearing about ZZ Top, Jimi Hendrix sure did! ZZ played a few shows with Hendrix and he was quoted as saying that the best guitar player he has heard on the scene today would be Billy Gibbons! That's pretty much a mic drop moment there.
1973. In a friends old pick-up truck. Working for the US Forest Service. Stopping for fuel in central Oregon. This is playing on his 8 track player. Sweet!
When Billy gibbons first started out he played a while with Hendrix.💖🎶🎶🎶🎸🎸🥁. I saw them at least 6. Times in Houston💕💕. Guys you gotta see them live🔥🔥🔥. Zzz top. Live at Eric Clapton's guitar festival,. 🔥🔥🔥

That was why it was so fun growing up in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Rock takes its influence from all kinds of music - what ever the artists liked. Try ZZ Top "blue jeans blues" for a bit of blues sound from them.

Dusty Hill, the bass player passed away about six months ago. ..In the late 70's, the band took some time off and the drummer had some drug troubles. Dusty didn't want people to think he was full of himself and didn't want to become full of himself , so he got a job at Dallas/Ft Worth airport ...Kind of guy he was.
I know I'll get flack for this but I honestly feel the Top was at their best prior to their Eliminator release, which I feel is when they went pop/commercial. Their early works were true blues.
The sound he got on the guitar at the end solo is using "pinched harmonics" You pick the string and at a the same time catch it with the side of the thumb, which produces a harmonic of the note that is picked.
One thing about ZZ Top, if you are in a bad mood they will make you smile in a heartbeat. If you can listen to them and not rock out, I don't know what is wrong with you.
Mt dad turned me own to zz top in 1974 he was a simi famous drummer at the time. he met billy in Austin tx while he was touring with "Asleep at the wheel" Then he went to drum with Drifters and i went with him on that tour and he run into billy again we went to a party at this nice mansion zz top was at. Thats when i met billy i had my acoustic yamaha with me and got to pick a few songs with him and some other guys. thats when zz top was really taking off i think it was 1976. But billy showed me his squeal he on the guitar with the tip of the pick and a few other tricks. that helped me. And such a nice guy too wasnt stuck up like some of the other musicians i met over the years..i have been too many zz concerts to count. But the most memorable was in Brandon ms just 2 days after dusty hill died the sound tech played dustys bass part billy put billys hat on his mic so touching
First time I heard this song was a concert in which they were the warm up band. They came out in boots belt and buckle looking like Merle Haggard had just come on stage. The whole crowed was dumbfounded and caught off guard. The first song they started playing was La Grange and just blew the crowd away. To this day I don't remember who the Headliner was.
They could have given me another 10 minutes of that jam at the end and I would have loved it. The 'boogie' sound is not unique to ZZ Top but they killed it with La Grange for sure. Similar vibe or groove can be heard from the band Canned Heat. Try 'Let's Work Together' CANNED HEAT - LET'S WORK TOGETHER - UA-cam or 'On the Road Again' Canned Heat - On The Road Again [HQ] - UA-cam
La Grange - the how how how song. Walk of Life - the woo who song. Still... you turn me on - the wow wow wow song studio version only. My brother used pick a category then play songs that reflect the category.
Yes! Everything you said about ZZ Top! Billy Gibbons playing guitar from his soul! A little off topic but, I’m currently watching the tv show Bones and every now and then he has a reoccurring guest appearance as a regular character’s (Angela) dad and for some reason it makes me so happy every time I see him on there. 😊
First time I ever heard ZZ Top was Feb 21, 1970 in San Antonio as the front band with a four song set (and never mentioned on any concert calendar) for the groups, It's a Beautiful Day, Quicksilver Messenger, John Mayall and headlined by the Grateful Dead. Hadn't even gotten stoned for the first time (that didn't happen until Easter weekend 1970 at Aransas Beach). Lost my hearing for three days in Atlanta later in the decade at a ZZ Top concert, 3 rows from the front.
Grew up on this shit. I hung out with bikers as a kid and grew up on zep,the stones ,sabbath, skynyrd, and zz tpp. I was into painting Harley tanks then .
It might be the Crown talking but that was my favorite reaction to date. I've been a Radio and mobile and club DJ since 1982 and a music freak since birth. Sometimes I am questioning the sincerity of reaction posts, but I think I saw honesty there.
Fire! Pure Fire! Few guitarists can pinch the notes the way Billy Gibbons does on this song. The birds come out to sing along when I play it in my backyard. They also come out for the slide guitar in "Just Got Paid". They dig high pitched chirps apparently. When you can, check out ZZ Top's cover of the Sam & Dave classic "I Thank You". It's hard and gritty with one of the meanest guitar tones you'll ever hear.
Fun fact about Billy Gibbons singer and lead guitarist for ZZ Top back in the day played in a little band with Jimi Hendrix Yes you heard me right and Billy Gibbons was one of Jimmy's mentors on the guitar true story
By the way "La Grange" is about a very famous establishment on the edge of town called The Chicken Ranch. In 1982 a movie was made about The Chicken Ranch called "The best Little Whorehouse in Texas". The Chicken Ranch closed in 1973 too. The same year this song came out. RIP Dusty Hill.
There is or was a great documentary on Netflix about ZZTOP... manic mechanic and cheap sunglasses are my favorites... Blue Jeans ..they have a lot of great songs!
That little band from Texas. You know this song is about the infamous Chicken Ranch. The basis for the play and movie 'The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. These guys never seem to dissapoint. A great souther blues band that rocks. RIP Dusty Hill. He is missed greatly. If you haven"t already, try 'Waitin' on the Bus/ Jesus Just Left Chicago' and 'Just Got Paid'. Great driving blues rockers.
I saw them in 1973 at Winterland in SF. They were the FIRST band on a 3 band show. ZZ Top, Wild Turkey (former Tull bassist) and West, Bruce and Lang. The main thing I remember is the amount of pot smoke in the auditorium and nobody cared

Texas blues crankin'!!! Love it.
Check out Blue Jean blues! Love ZZ TOP! I've seen them in concert twice. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Did you ever do Blue Jeans Blues by ZZ ? Just can’t remember.
This is the first song in history to feature harmonics (from 4:43), the same harmonics that Edward Van Halen perfected using the lever.
I got a hearing lose from seeing them in 75 to this song loudest concert I was at . It was great
I got 2 recommendations for you guys. 1 Waiting for the bus/Jesus left Chicago. 2 Elvis and the black community. Keep on rocking you guys!
Just three super talented guys from Houston. Love their early stuff so much. Billy Gibbons is an incredible guitarist.
I got to meet Dusty Hill & we talked for about 30 minutes. He was really cool. How could you not like ZZ Top or trust anyone that didn't?
Like other comments if you like La Grange with its heavy rock/country/Blues then you will love 'My heads in Mississippi' a real gem.
YESSSSS 🔥🔥🔥😎🤘🤘🤘✌️ One of my favorite Texas bands!
