I read once someone asked Paul McCartney what it was like play with the worlds greatest rock & roll band, he replied I don’t recall ever playing with ZZ Top.
A little too much John Lee Hooker for at least one person. The publisher and copyright holder of the John Lee Hooker song "Boogie Chillen'" sued but lost. This case led to some changes in American copyright law, and ZZ Top settled out of court. The details are on the Wikipedia page for "Boogie Chillen'."
I have been fortunate to have seen “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” Live 4 times. I recorded the last show (Full HD) before Dusty passed away. Always an awesome show. You must see many other tunes from them including “Rough Boy” (official video)…. “Same three guys, same three cords, for five decades” - Billy Gibbons at last show.
Me too. I remember seeing them on stage singing while spinning their guitars in synch and then a big puff of smoke and they disappeared from stage in the middle of the song. About 10 seconds later the auditorium doors 50 yards from the stage behind us swung open and they walked through the doors playing their guitars walking down the isle back toward the stage. It was frickin amazing. Never forgot that epic mind trick and I attended that concert many years ago during the 80’s in Hollywood, Florida. ✌️
I was fortunate enough to spend time in Central Texas at Fort Hood after my time in Vietnam. I had a buddy who invited me down to Houston to meet his family and enjoy the music scene. It was 1971. Wow! ZZTop! Wow!! That was a show in a very small venue. Great music. Great people. Texas! Houston! So real and so much fun! Great time for great music!! Thanks for the ride back in time!

Jimmy Hendrix said during an interview on the "Dick Cavett Show" answering to the question of how it felt like to be the greatest guitar player in the world, "I don't know, you'll have to ask Billy Gibbons!" He and Billy were good friends after the pre-ZZ Top band of the same members opened for him at a gig. The Band, "The Warlocks'", did not have enough material to fill their time. So, they filled their close with two of Hendrix's songs. He told them they had "Ball's" and the rest is history.
La Grange!!! A classic !!! If you wanna hear something as good but more of their early blues stuff try: waitin' for the bus/ Jesus Just Let Chicago 🔥 Billy Gibbons also did a some great duets with John Fogerty ( CCR)
I've always been a huge fan of their pre-80's albums: ZZ Top's First Album, Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, Fandango!, Tejas, Deguello. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert in Tampa, FL 3 or 4 years ago. RIP Dusty Hill
This is the original recording in the studio and it's always an excellent choice. And that groove that you're talking about is called shufflin' in C….Killer blues structure.

Speaking of 3 man bands, I'm hoping you guys get to the classic Jimi Hendrix Experience LPs like Are You Experienced and Axis Bold As Love. Electric Ladyland, Cry of Love, Band of Gypsys and the various live albums and comps are amazing too but start at the beginning as they sound like no other band from that time. After 55 years they're still exciting and sound incredibly fresh.
ZZ Top are Texas Icons no questions asked! Rest Easy Dusty Hill! Over 50 years and was always in tune with the streets of HTown! Undoubtedly some of the greatest to ever do it! 💪🏾💯
A fresh channel you have here guys, I love how you break things down. You hit the nail on the head when you commented on ZZ Top's comedic lyrics. It seems they do like to have a li'l fun with their music. I read some years ago Gillette offered Billy and Dusty a million $ to shave their beards off. They turned it down and said something like, 'you folks wouldn't like what's underneath'. Albums, Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, Deguello and Tejas is where the band are at their best.
You guys are kicking ass! Dont worry about the critics. If you weren't given the info of the preferred recording then it's not on you. Billy Gibbons is a guitar God. I got to see them on their Recycler album tour. They were excellent. That Texas boogie gets right under your skin and makes you move. If you like their bluesy stuff, you need to check out their tune called A Fool For Your Stockings.
The thing I like about their songs is that they leave a lot of room to just jam. This song is about 3 minutes, but when I saw them live they played this song for 8 minutes.
I was at the 1974 Labor Day Weekend concert at the University of Texas’, Memorial Stadium. Billed as “The Rompin' Stompin' Texas Size Barn Dance and Barbecue” was hosted by Texas trio ZZ Top, with a lineup that included Santana, Bad Company, Joe Cocker and Jimmy Page - and 80,000 sweaty fans. Was the last concert held in that stadium, it got trashed. What a show, the beards were still short, rhinestones on their attire, longhorn, rattlesnakes… Texas baby and we’re loud and proud.
Saw em several times in the 70s. First time in 73 opening for Deep Purple. That's a band you should check out. I'd recommend the song "lazy". This song highlights the guitar genius that is Billy Gibbons or the Reverend Willie G as he’s sometimes called. Dude can just flat out play some of the tastiest riffs and licks ever. Those pick harmonics in the 2nd solo section are just out of this world .
Yeah, as a kid growing up teaching myself to play guitar those pick harmonics were a revelation, I didn't need anyone to show me how, I just practised till I got it down. Another good song for those harmonics was Steely Dan's My Old School where Jeff Skunk Baxter plays a couple of great solos featuring the same technique.
ZZ Top was a very good live band. They had some years in there that here in Texas a few too many Nazi CONfedeRacy flags in the audience so I strayed. But when you dig into ZZ's history, almost everything they do is an homage to black roots R&B. Texas is full of enigmatic codes.
ZZ Top Rules! My second favorite 3 man band. 1. RUSH 2. ZZ Top 3. Triumph Everything up to Eliminator was original ZZ Top artistry. After Eliminator their record producers wanted their music to "sound like" Eliminator. Sad.
I read once someone asked Paul McCartney what it was like play with the worlds greatest rock & roll band, he replied I don’t recall ever playing with ZZ Top.
