MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year! All the Best! Gary Lagstrom
Yes, it's a tribute to MLK but it's a song about non-violent resistance according to the band. In the first verse it talks about the different types of leaders we have. Then a man dies on a barbed wire fence - an allusion to the first world war, to which "one man he resists" ie the conscientious objectors to that war, many of whom were shot for cowardice. The second world war is referenced in the line about dying on a beach - see the Normandy invasions. Then the Jesus line about Judas's betrayal with a kiss and JCs refusal to resist arrest and execution. Verse three is the MLK verse which takes poetic licence with the time of day the assassination took place, but it works better aesthetically. All these people had pride in their beliefs instead of arrogance. They are very cool lyrics.
@@tonycasey3183 The line about 'one man washed on an empty beach' can also be interpreted as Jonah defying God, being swallowed by the Whale, repenting and being vomited back out and washing up on the shore.
Bono and The Edge always get the attention but Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton are the heartbeat in this song, that bottom end is just relentless. And credit has to be given to Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois for their production on this album. They really brought out the best in U2.
Absolutely, was going to comment the same, but you did it for me! The rhythm section is just awesome in this. And the production allows this, The Edge's soundscapes aren't allowed to overshadow anything, everything has a strong place in the mix - which makes for an explosive listen. U2 never sounded better than here, in my opinion.
Yes! Any U2 hits from the 1980s is a must and “Pride” is an excellent place to start. U2 Sunday Bloody Sunday-Live At The Red Rocks (1983) is so electrifying more so than the studio version. Anything off The Joshua Tree can’t go wrong. Great reaction 👏
This is definitely a song where you should have looked at the lyrics, at the least after the video when you expressed not really understanding what was being said. There's a reason so many requested this song, and it's because it's a powerful song and really what has made U2 to be considered a thoughtful and maybe even somewhat political group. Many do recognize the significance of the date mentioned, MLK's assassination. I guess maybe it could be interpreted as ballad, but it's not a ballad to romantic love but rather the love of those who sacrificed their lives for the good of humankind.
Yes! It's a shame that the thoughtfulness and meaning of this song get lost in reactions. However, people who comment can help spread how profound the song really is.
“Pride” is a Tribute, to the late Martin Luther King Jr. “MLK.” The final verse of “Pride” says, Early morning, April 4 / Shot rings out in the Memphis sky / Free at last, they took your life / They could not take your pride. On April 4, 1968, King was fatally shot in Memphis, Tennessee on a motel balcony. In the song, Bono incorrectly sings early morning when the shooting actually took place at 6:01 p.m.
If you want to delve more into the early U2 I would recommend either "New Year's Day" or "Sunday Bloody Sunday". Bloody Sunday is especially great as it is about one of the worst events during the "Troubles" in the North. There is also a great duet with Bono and The Corrs called "When the Stars Go Blue" you should check out ua-cam.com/video/Ry8puXc7Tt4/v-deo.html
The lyrics "Early morning, April four, Shot rings out in the Memphis sky, Free at last, they took your life. They could not take your pride," refers to Martin Luther King's assassination. The entire song is a tribute to martyrs, from Jesus to a soldier on a barbed wire fence during a war, to being washed up on the beach on D-Day, and even being betrayed with a kiss. People often lose their lives in the name of love. For faith, country, and beliefs.
Been listening to U2 since their debut. This a band of emotion. Socially conscious. Bono's voice digs into you. I recommend One. It may hurt a bit, but love can hurt. I think it's his best voice from within.
I notice Bono voice was more high register in around that year and younger. And then when 1987 Joshua Tree came out his voice became richer and thicker. Not as high register, but still soulful and powerful.
This was a baby face Bono for sure and you are right, he had some powerful vocals. U2 is an Irish rock band from Dublin, formed in 1976. The group consists of Bono (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), The Edge (lead guitar, keyboard, backing vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullin Jr. (drums & percussion). My wife talked me into going to a U2 concert a while back. She's a big fan, while I am not. Still, I have to admit that they put on a great show. It was during their 360 Tour, I want to say in 2017? Big stadium show... and I've been to some wild stadium shows. But it was a good time (though, no mosh pits.... but to be fair, I'm too old and disabled to join in one anymore). I still can't get her to go to a Doro Pesch concert.... speaking of, there's someone you guys should do a reaction to. The Queen of Metal, herself: Doro Pesch. She's from Germany, and has a huge following everywhere except the US. Here, it's sort of a small but very dedicated fanbase. I've met her several times, and she is a great person. Very fan friendly, and I'm friends with her drummer, Johnny Dee.
Lots to explore with U2. Socially conscious band with meaningful lyrics that you need to explore. Bono has a lot of range. It’s so funny to hear someone say they have never heard bono sing like this, because he has been singing like this for decades on a massive global stage. This song has an easy and clear MLK reference. As they are Irish, they sing about the troubles as well.
Bono’s vocal range is immense. Their concerts are an experience even now. I’d recommend doing a review of all I want is you into where the streets have no name from their U2 go home concert(slane castle) and bullet the blue sky from their innocence tour in Paris. Actual chills
This song is about people who have died trying to change the world for the better. The final verse is specifically about MLK. Bono had a powerhouse voice in the 80's. It mellowed with age in the 90's but still was still amazing to me. 🥰
Mellowed? Hardly. Have you listened to Miss Sarajevo, Kite, Every Breaking Wave, esp live? It was cleaner in his youth, but his technique has expanded and grown over the years. However, he wasn't just screaming in the 80s, many vocalists have commented on his technique, including this song.
I never thought he was screaming. I have loved this band in every era. His voice did soften in the 90's. That doesn't mean he couldn't use that power when he wanted and I never meant to suggest that it did, but he had far more control over the softer tones as he aged. He even said himself that something started to happen to his voice that they didn't expect, but they wanted it. The ability to "sing like a girl" as he said (I took this to mean his falsetto), which is something every male singer wants according to him. :) @@MBeano

U2 had toured extensively in the early 80's. They certainly paid their dues. I would recommend The Electric Co from Dortmund Germany 1984, or Bad from the same concert.
The song is about people who came into the world to bring words of reconciliation and died for it Jesus, MLK, etc. "One more time in the name of love".
It was all about MLK and why because of he was assassinated, he still did not lose his pride. Pride for what you are doing remains always, regardless of whether you are alive or not.

The combination of sad/deeply meaningful lyrics with uplifting anthemic instrumentals is a powerful one. Other examples that spring to mind are Metallica song One, or many songs on the latest Foo Fighters album (Rescued, Under You, The Teacher).
Crazy that Bono was only 24 here…what a powerful and mature voice! Like a man who had lived lifetimes already. The rest of the guys really compliment it so well. Edge with his tone and use of effects has always been a highlight plus his voice goes so well with Bono’s. Then you have the rhythm section which is always perfect on every song. Never too much and always enough. Great band!
This whole song is all about the message. That is the reason why Bono's voice is so strong and passionate. This is the message about fighting for the right cause despite of all the attrocities and wrongdoings that are going on in this world. I is a very powerful message.
Our favorite deep cut is "Drowning Man" from the War album. Inspiriational atmospherics and perhaps the best performance ever by Bono.... One Man come in the name of love....one Man betrayed by a kiss.... By the way Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders is singing the lower harmony on the chorus.
Hi Guys have been a U2 for decades an I grew up with them in the 80's this Album the Unforgettable Fire was different than their other's and there are many good songs on it well worth a listen. Cheers.
This song is about Jesus, MLK, Gandhi. It comes from the Unforgettable Fire album and is imo one of their best album. There's a song called MLK on it that you shlould listen and the title track is a gem.
Great reaction as usual, but I'd definitely consider reading up a little on songs you're about to listen to just so you understand the deeper meaning behind some of the lyrics, especially with U2 songs.
This song is from U2's 3rd studio album, The Unforgettable Fire. It was their first big hit in the US. You should see their live set from Live Aid - ua-cam.com/video/TJFg2h0MIb8/v-deo.html - You'll see at one point Bono jumps down to the security area. He did so because from where he was standing, he could see, but security could not, that 3 women were in danger of being crushed by the crowd. It was at a point where he wasn't holding a mic, and security couldn't hear him, so he jumped down to tell them what he'd seen, and they were able to save the women. One was crying, and so Bono spun her into a dance to protect her privacy from the paparazzi until she could get herself together. The rest of the band just continued playing, not having any clue what he was doing, and they were pissed at him until they found out what had happened, later. At the time, all they knew was that they missed out on playing Pride, their hit song, because the extended version they did of the song they were on when he jumped down, Bad, took so long that their set time ran out. But their performance put them on the map for good; Queen's set at Live Aid was the best of the day, without question, but U2's was a very close second.
The Unforgettable Fire album by U2 is a classic followed by The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby!! Thanks for the awesome reaction video!! Keep up the great work, always enjoy your videos on your channel

On September 29th, U2 will "inaugurate" the structurally unique The Sphere in Las Vegas and will mainly play the songs from Hoffnung Baby 1991 there until the end of the year. PS MLK was sung; maybe you should listen to the whole song first before worrying too much. U2 in the 80's was awesome; this song was the first US hit single, just a musical and lyrical facet of U2. P.S Live Aid 1985 the song package Sunday, Bloody Sunday+Bad👍; you would be amazed!✌
A trip through your wires (JT album) October / Bullet the Blue Sky (Live in Paris 2015) In God's country (JT album) Exit (Rattle and Hum live version) Mothers of the Dissapeared (Live in Seattle with Eddie Vedder)

The combination of sad/deeply meaningful lyrics with uplifting anthemic instrumentals is a powerful one. Other examples that spring to mind are Metallica song One, or many songs on the latest Foo Fighters album (Rescued, Under You, The Teacher).
The lyrics are extremely powerful. You should have them handy with the song as the music and message present as one strong message.
U2 = the most successful christian rock band ever!!!! 🤔🎶👍
Great band!
The bass player sounds great
This whole song is all about the message. That is the reason why Bono's voice is so strong and passionate. This is the message about fighting for the right cause despite of all the attrocities and wrongdoings that are going on in this world. I is a very powerful message.
One of my favorite all time songs! Such great meaning as well.
Nice reaction! This song is a real 'crowd pleaser' live, with 80,000 people singing the "oh-oh-oh"s at the end.
My personal favorite Rock n Roll band of all time
Hi Guys have been a U2 for decades an I grew up with them in the 80's this Album the Unforgettable Fire was different than their other's and there are many good songs on it well worth a listen. Cheers.
Their are 2 very important videos y’all should react to:
U2 - One
U2 & Mary J Blige - One
A whole different sound and soul-binding.
Rattle and Hum must watch!!!! Get in the U2 rabbit hole!!! Achtung Baby one of my favorite albums!!! U2 is the perfect band!!
The early U2 is really good.
the conviction in his face when he sings the main lyrics soo profound!!
I am still a U2 fan all these years later from when tgey first started 💥
This song is about Jesus, MLK, Gandhi. It comes from the Unforgettable Fire album and is imo one of their best album. There's a song called MLK on it that you shlould listen and the title track is a gem.
Great voice! I love the album Under a Blood Red Sky! ❤️
Hey guys have a look at red rocks live from 1983 .that concert was the start of a lifetime of amazing live performances around the globe .
Early U2. This is more raw than their later material. They all look so young.
I can always tell U2's sound when I hear The Edge's guitar. Then Bono's voice comes in, great and powerful. They have to be in the top 10 bands.
Best u2 period is the 80s and pride is, awesome❤❤❤❤❤❤
Early evening April 4, shot rings out in the Memphis sky!
Amazing song, Bono (the singer) sings a lot of lyrics “ad lib”
Started off, “one man,” but became, “want more.”
❤gracias u2 por tu música 🎶 saludos desde Argentina
Great reaction as usual, but I'd definitely consider reading up a little on songs you're about to listen to just so you understand the deeper meaning behind some of the lyrics, especially with U2 songs.
The song came out in 1984 in the Unforgettable Fire Album. You should listen to their earlier albums...just raw.
My favorite U2 songs are "I Will Follow," "New Year's Day" and "With or Without You."
Fourth studio album , boy, October and war, came before, plus under a blood red sky,
Bloody Sunday is another great u2 track
The Unforgettable Fire album by U2 is a classic followed by The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby!! Thanks for the awesome reaction video!! Keep up the great work, always enjoy your videos on your channel
Rattle and Hum was also a great one.
@gingers.5933 Agreed!!
Lady of Harlem is a great song! Thanks for your attention!
U2
"I Will Follow"
"Mysterious Ways"
"New Year's Day"
"Two Hearts Beat As One"
In powerful music, lyrics are important.
many think Bono's best vocal performance is his guesting with the band Clannad on their song "In A Lifetime"
U2 was at its best in that era. So was Bono's voice. You have to listen to "Bad" from the Live Aid concert in London 1985.
U2 forever😊❤❤❤hello from Austria
It will help to research the content of the song prior to listening. It’ll benefit the appreciation of songs. There’s other reactors who do that and it creates a better experience for you and your viewers.
The stage is located in St. Francis Xavier Hall, Dublin.
their first 6 albums ( in my opinion) were phenomenal! and it's not like there other albums weren't "i bought them to"
Your so right but then there was the album Apple gave and forced on us!
Saw U2 in Yankee Stadium back in 1992...... Best concert I ever attended. Section roped off next to us reserved for JFK Jr. and his girlfriend. They were really cool passing the doobies our way LoL!!...
Anything off of War is great, Sunday Bloody Sunday is a must! New Years Day too, and I do enjoy I Threw A Brick Through A Window too lol but its on October, such a great band, seen them many times live ❤
For me “New Year’s Day” is still my favorite of theirs.
Oh my gosh, such important references in this song, great lyrics that unfortunately you did not get. This is a militant song, as sngs by U2 used to be at that time.
sunday bloody sunday is a must!
Incredible band ❤
Legendary song about Jesus and MLK. And, this was U2’s debut album!
Very important fact with U2 … Their Lyrics!
This is from their 4 th album
A trip through your wires (JT album)
October / Bullet the Blue Sky (Live in Paris 2015)
In God's country (JT album)
Exit (Rattle and Hum live version)
Mothers of the Dissapeared (Live in Seattle with Eddie Vedder)
Bullet the blue sky live in Boston is incredible x
This was about Martin Luther King. Also, Bono the lead singer a lot became a pastor/priest in his youth.
So, U2 is definitely a band to check out live. If you are thinking about going chronologically, start with "Bad" from the Live Aid performance in 1985.
You should hear every breaking wave live by u2 his vocals are on another level ❤❤
Q: Which U2 hit song should we listen to?
À: Yes.
Sunday Bloody Sunday is a powerful song❤
I love sound of early U2. Pls also check out Sunday Bloody Sunday, Two Hearts Beat As One, and New Years Day (the live performance at Red Rocks is a must-watch).
