      Hello. Thank you for a very informative video. I have a Pennsylvania House oak secretary-style desk, and I'm trying to figure out if it was made in USA or somewhere else. It has four drawers on the bottom, with the top drawer being a bit shallower (in height) than the lower three drawers. It has a slanted hinged front that folds down to expose a desk surface, with three small drawers and some cubbyholes. The only brand marking I can find is a burned-in "Pennsylvania House" logo, burned into the left-hand inside piece of the top drawer. I can find no other labels or markings. Is it possible to tell if this piece was made in USA? It is very solid and seems to be well-built and well-finished. Some scuffs and scratches from previous owners. Thanks very much!

      We purchased a bedroom set in 2007. We have never been able to remove the drawers. Any hints or suggestions?

      @@daedalus55 Look on the back panel. It should have a stamp that has the model number and manufacture date. I worked there for 25 years and I would say it was made in Lewisburg. Also, the prefix for oak at the time was 23 which would be on the stamp. For instance, there was a dresser that has a 23-2317 model number.

      @@oldsnare54 Hey, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I can find no stamps or labels anywhere, except for the burned in "Pennsylvania House" logo in the top drawer. I did show some photos of the desk to a local vintage furniture dealer, and he said it looks to be from the made-in-USA era of the company. That's cool that you used to work, there. I've visited Lewisburg a few times, it's a good town.

    I worked at the Lewisburg plant for 25 years and my last day of work was December 17, 2004. All of the assembly crews signed the back of our last piece of furniture. It was LazyBoy who owned the plant when it was sent to China. They eventually sold the name to National Lacquer. I helped to build many of the models of furniture that you have in the video.

      @@johnfry9993 In the early '80s, there was a painted pine line of furniture in different colors. A medium green was one of the colors but the whole line was also distressed to look old and worn. That is the only one I know of or remember.

      @@johnfry9993 You're welcome and I'm glad that I could help. I think it was a limited run, so your piece could be one of maybe 200. Each piece would be different depending on who distressed it. No two are alike.

    I just got a new to me Pennsylvania House dresser. It is replacing my old Pennsylvania House dresser. The old dresser goes to my sister who has the rest of the old bedroom set from my parents. I have one of the nightstands as well but found a matching nightstand at Goodwill that I already gave to her. I really like the design of the nightstand, so I was happy to find another I could keep. All I can say is carrying the dresser into my house reminded you how well their furniture was built. My parents have always bought Pennsylvania House furniture. Unfortunately, when they bought their new dining room table; they didn't know they company had changed. While it isn't the worst thing, it isn't of the same quality. They table is fine but the chairs are just not holding up. It is the overseas stuff. The veneer over particle board construction isn't horrible. It is the design. The chairs legs are secured with bolts and the bolts just keep coming loose. They still have their older, smaller dining room table and chairs. The old, solid oak chairs are perfect.

      watch the local auctions , maybe ones that match will show up. refinished and for sale at a vintage store like ours in solid cherry or oak will be pricey but worth it.

    Thanks for the information! I, too, love PH furniture. I own a cherry wood curio cabinet with the burnt-in logo inside top left drawer. It houses about a hundred hard back books and small bibelots. Tempered glass shelves. Solid brass hardware. Looks very English. I get many compliments on its styling.

      if you open the hidden drawer enough to fit your hand on the top inside usually in the middle should be a wood clip or plastic that may need to push up as you pull or the mirror on top may have a nut stopping it and holding the mirror in place, so,etimes a good yank may also pull it out on more modern pieces

    I have a 24-year-old Pennsylvania linen sofa and the quality of the others aren't up to grade for me. Should I have it recovered or get a new sofa?

    • @VintageFurnitureGuide
      @VintageFurnitureGuide  2 роки тому

      Hi Ann. Although expensive, I often recommend recovering a vintage sofa. You are absolutely right... new ones simply don't compare to the vintage ones by quality manufacturers like Pennsylvania House. Especially if you like the lines, the comfort and the style of your old one, I say it is an excellent investment to have it recovered. Most upholsterers will also address any issues like adding extra padding or repairing any foam etc. Plus, you get to have fun picking out a new fabric! :D Best, Rachel

    I just found 3 pieces for $135 a coffee table with 2 leaf sides that bend down, round side table?, and a long end table. He said it’s all cherry. It has Pennsylvania house burned into the wood drawer. As you can tell I know nothing about furniture. I came here to see if it was worth it. I love it but my hubby thinks it looks old fashion. I think I’m going to go back and get them though. I just want solid wood furniture and I don’t think I can find that in todays market for my budget 😂

      Hi Toby, sorry but we do not know of one, usually we replace all the hardware with something similar. Brass hardware in the last year has just about doubled in price if not more. We browse amazon, ebay and the antiquehardware websites when looking.

    I have a vintage cherry gateleg table with turned legs and 6 ladder back rush seat chairs. Couldn’t find markings on the chairs, but the table is stenciled “1914 - Z - TABLE / MT VERNON”. Is that. a Pennsylvania House marking? Someone told me it was a Willett table but that doesn’t seem consistent with the markings.

    • @VintageFurnitureGuide
      @VintageFurnitureGuide  2 роки тому

      Not familiar with those markings but many great companies made similar gateleg tables and ladder back chairs, Hickory Chair company made many of very high quality.
