Saw Ethan Allen spindle back dining chairs in a Katherine Hepburn movie from the 30s. It was a marketing device I am sure since colonial revival was in full swing what with Williamsburg style. I have a dining and living room set bought by my parents in the late 60s. They are in very good shape, and are perfect in my open concept home. The LR set, sofa, swing about and regular chairs, was recently upholstered in dark brown faux leather. I will keep them forever. Since 2026 is coming up that will be 250 years since the revolution and the brown furniture may have a real comeback. People need to stop painting these wood pieces. I can understand if the finish is messed up but...
Just purchased an Ethan Allen Georgian Court triple dresser and two nightstands for my son for $60.! There is a lot of surface scratching, but no serious damage, drawers are still beautiful inside. Set should be refinished, a great deal! Also, recently purchased a Georgian Court double dresser, tall chest and nightstand for my guest room in pristine condition for $600.! It's amazing the prices one is able to find nice furniture for these days if you just keep an eye out. Back in the 90s we paid a a lot for my Ethan Allen bedroom set (Medallion) brand new - consider it a good buy, however, as we still love it!
Ethan Allen has always sourced most of its material through their own area: North America. And the boys that founded it actually bought out a housewares company that mainly made garden gnomes and trellises, and then found a local bankrupt sawmill! It was really a good story about two young men, their dream, and their quick attainment of that dream, for just 7 years after buying that saw mill for $25,000 they presented their own line of solid wood furniture called the Colonial line. Today, after being run by a CEO that wasn’t even born a native to this country, this private company still sources 75% of their wood from North American workers.
I’ve bought numerous pieces of Ethan Allen bedroom furniture in the “Classic Manor” finish. Great quality, it’s lasted 50 years, and still looks beautiful. Also Ethan Allen Mission Style 'American Impressions' cherry and black contemporary furniture for our family room.
Ted, you are so right. We also have Ethan Allen Chairs that our over 50 years old. It's incredible, isn't it!? So glad you are still enjoying your Ethan Allen pieces. Thanks for writing! :)
I can’t believe I came across this video. Today I purchased a Ethan Allen Heirloom Table with two drawers at good will today for only $20! Not one scratch on it. Could pass for new. Have a stamp on the Inside top drawer that says Etban Allen American Tradition. Also reads.. Solid Maple and or Birch Serial numbers are 10 8587. Do you know what year this was made. Excellent video! Can’t believe I came across this piece of furniture at a price like this.. Thank you in advance and Happy Holidays. Mike From Connecticut here…
I have the white EA bedroom dressers from the '60s and '70s. The white has yellowed and a lot of the veneer around the top corners has chipped off. Can anything be done for either issue? Thanks 😊
you could glue the venner down and maye paint the whole [iece, the yellowing we have never found a way to fix, Hitchcock furniture does the same, i would use a lacquer as varnish also yellows fast, at auction we skip pieces like you described, sorry for negative news. we also may use body car putty to fix missing veneer if you choose to paint, painting furniture in colonial periods was actually quite a common practice, idf the drawers are fiited dont use alot of paint as thre drawers may not fit after painting.
I have a head and foot board stamped with Ethan Allen numbers and company name. Circa 1984 maple beehive posts. I’m curious where to get a frame to fit? I need to refinish it to bring back its original luster, but it is in great condition for our Floridian humidity where it’s been stored the last two decades.
@@judyr.7249 I would go to a large mattress store ,they usually still sell higher quality frames around $125 but you will need to fit it or attach to your pieces, no one sells just Ethan Allen vintage rails
@@VintageFurnitureGuide honesty is desirable 😊 I don’t want to sell it, so finding a frame and using it (refurbished) is my end goal. Loved the video and thank you!! I’ll let you know when I get it all worked out. Thank again.
I have many of the pieces in this video, my biggest question....how do you clean off fingerprints on the wood surfaces. Ages ago Ethan Allen told me not to use furniture polish and suggested their cleaner. I bought that cleaner and on one of my pieces it actually ruined the finish taking away the shine/gloss. So how do you clean simple finger prints.
if you mean a post from the wood slat holding the boxspring that goes to the floor? we use ones they sell at Lowes and Home Depot and then cut them to height and attach it using a furniture lock nut to the slats. if you mean the slats holding the boxspring, again have Home Depot or Lowes cut them to size using your wood of choice, if you mean the center support from the headboard to thew footboard, you are going to need to fashion a piece of angle iron or wood(simpler) to fit as no one we know of besides Ethan Allen sellls their parts.

@@VintageFurnitureGuide I have a bedframe I am trying to sell, I didn't realize the value of the bed and so on until a vintage buyer started asking certain questions like the maker and year. Hello we just purchased a used dining room set. We don't have the server/buffet. How can I find out which series it is? It has these numbers on the back of the lower section of the hutch and very similar on the upper section of the hutch 11-6346 & 21 7 91 Can anyone help me figure this out?

I have a lot of the traditional finish Custom Room Plan pieces -which I love and would never give up. Makes me laugh to see the way people waste money on garbage level modular home office furniture from trendy stores while my Ethan Allen just keeps doing the same job, holding up and looking great. Just too bad Ethan Allen stopped producing it. For people who ask when Ethan Allen started making cheaper pieces, I think it was the mid 80's. I have one piece I bought at an estate auction (a corner desk) that has the formica top. I only bought it because it came with the maple corner bookcase & I paid $90 for both-that gave me a pair & allows me to fill a room or shape an office area in a larger room. Avoid the formica tops! Over time, they chip, crack & separate while the older versions keep going. You also can't refinish them. If I ever find another older one, the formica is going to the curb.
@@normamccoy6114 You must have taken good care of them. We're in the Midwest, in farm country, and every piece I see is chipped, cracked or separating. I wonder if people have stored it somewhere that was not temperature controlled at some point -other pieces I think were just the victims of rowdy kids. I have to say though that I don't really like the sharp feel of the edges on Formica either. I know it's supposed to be more practical, but I'm still a fan of the originals.
My husband and I purchase used Ethan Allen Baumritter Furniture in Nutmeg because they last. Most of our pieces are from the 1960's to 1970's. The other pieces we have are from Pennsylvania House in the same wood tone and quality. They are solid, in great shape and considered as highly desirable today.
