I have restored 5 old houses. Working on my last one at 72. I ALWAYS get to a point in the middle when I stop and hysterically cry, "What have i done?" Then I dry my tears, have a cup of coffee, pick up my tools and move on. You're doing well.
As an architecture student I also wanna thank you for retrofitting this house. We really need to think about how best to be sustainable with every choice we make and it was a more sustainable choice to reuse the structure instead of demolishing it
@tatesmith253: It wasn’t about sustainability It was financial, he comments in the video the numbers didn’t stack up to demolish and rebuild, it would cost further £500k -£600k on top of the original £500k purchase price, better to refurbish what already exists.
Property developers really have the balls to look at a literal hovel, with human feces piled outside, an exploded toilet and 100% humidity in all of the rooms and say "yeah, £500k".
Yeah I also thought this price is insane. Depends if only the plot is worth it. Then it's OK. Price of Plot minus tear down cost. Only pay that for such projects! Then it makes sense. But prices have gone nuts since like 15 years.

As a woman,I had a vision at 32, totally remodeled a two story two bath, four bedroom, two large living rooms, large kitchen home in the country on Eight acres, with a pond. Cleared all the land, dug up out of the woods, dogwoods, redbuds, bushels of daffodils and shrubs, planted fruit trees, hauled in landscaping rocks. Tore down a barn, house, eight outbuildings for the lumber and architectural ornamentation, Our children all helped in the process. I started my own antique furniture restorration business, combed the coutryside for throw aways, giveaways. And then used the equity for my husband to start his own successful business. We paid 32,000 and sold it for 300,000, 30 years later. Bought another home, remodeled it sold it, then repeat. I'm 84, on social security, no house or car payment, no credit card debt, not on any medications. All according to plan. I loved every step of the way !

It's a myth. Millenials are extremely hard working. I think the issue is that kids today stay childish for longer, so at 25 they act the same as 20 year olds used to. That's why we think the younger generation doesn't want to work. It just takes them a little longer to get there, but once they're there, they get it done.
Easy to have strength when you can invest £600,000 into a project or even have the wealth accumilated to get the loans that buys three houses in most parts of the UK lmfao

My parents bought a plot of land in Canada with one outhouse (outside bathroom) on it. We parked a caravan on it, moved in and then my parents spent a year building our house to the point where we could safely move in while my dad worked 9 - 5 in another city. The only things they hired outsiders for were pouring the basement foundation, the framing, electrical and some plumbing. My parents installed drywall, built the wood kitchen cabinets from scratch, laid and stained the hardwood flooring, bricked the entire exterior and shingled the two story roof (whilst my dad was afraid of heights!). They then did all the finishes - painting, etc. My mum sewed all the window coverings. And they were very skilled at it all, even though my dad was an office worker and had barely lifted a hammer prior to this odyssey. They landscaped the outside which meant clearing the land of a lot of scrub, and making beautiful perennial gardens. I remember it took about ten years before everything was finally done to their satisfaction. We suffered through a very cold Canadian winter in that caravan (a time when I came down with mumps as a nine year old - being very sick in a caravan without a shower was not fun). My brother and I helped a fair bit (they would insist they didn't need our help, but we felt bad for reading our comic books while they laboured). When I hear people say "We built our own house/cottage", I can't help but ask "You mean - with your own hands, or did you hire people?". They almost always admit they didn't do it all themselves. I can't help but feel a bit smug. Keep on doing what you are doing. You are not only building homes, but character as well!
I remember renovating my house, standing in the bedroom on Christmas day with no walls plumbing or electrics thinking 'wtf have I done!', 2 yrs later it's all done, by myself and my dad, and couldn't agree more with everything you've said in this video.

Having renovated a house that hid horrors at ever turn, i can fully appreciate the emotions involved. Also, you can't rely on people to care as much as you do. There's that part where you reach the 'oh my god, what have i done' but one through this, it get easier. Nice work. I tip my hat to you.

You probably won't even read this , but I love in the state of Wisconsin,USA. What you spent on your Reno was not alot I thought you were going to say 3 or 4 hundred thousand. It would cost that much in the States. And where you are everything costs a lot more. You two did a stand up job. It's Beautiful and cozy, It's not my style but you know when you work on Reno's for customers you do what they like. We just have to put there vision to life. I'm retired now work on small projects for myself. I always wanted to cross the pond but never had the chance. It's so Beautiful over there and the history is just amazing. That was actually one of the most satisfying things I have seen on UA-cam. Something about your voice that is very motivating to listen to. Some people talk, and my brain switches off. Would love to see the grounds too. That was proper grafting, most people in the world aren't capable of this, because we have been nannied into being redundant, if it isn't handed to us on a plate, we don't know how to do it ourselves. Split up the mortgage, buy cheap, make it make sense, and get grafting!

No, I think we can completely understand the approach of completely destroying the building and rebuilding in its place. At the end of the day, what havesomevision did here with his brother is extraordinary and involved major personal sacrifice. We cannot expect most investors to do that.
Idk man he painted everything white and the kitchen looks sterile. It's a shame the beautiful brick walls are also completely sanitised. Someone else, who actually wants to live in a place like this and restore it with love and care, will never be able to now. I wanted to tell you that you did an amazing job! I live in Canada and we bought a run down house in an expensive community (we normally couldn't afford to live in) my husband renovated it all then we lived in it for 15 years. After that we were able to sell it and take our profits and fully pay off our smaller retirement home. It definitely pays to make your dream happen rather than wait to buy something brand new. Had we done that we wouldn't be mortgage free now as prices are crazy high here. Love the video ❤

Bloody well done I'm a builder Carpenter and Plumber and the hardest part of any renovations is removing all the crap and you feel overwhelmed and it seems never ending but hell you guys did a fantastic job
I concur! We stripped our house back to brick, every wire, every pipe back to the main, plaster off the walls and ceilings down... Man, it was hard! But it was pretty handy that the skip wagon man was on a bit of a sideline at the time! 😉

@ I started in my mid 20s, I finally stopped 3 years ago at age 62.. it enabled me to be mortgage free at age 40 and also owned a second house which I rented out for a few years.. I have now sold and invested the profits from the second home and invested that in to an inflation hedge which hopefully help protect my hard earned income for my retirement… I must add the housing market is a very different beast today , and I believe we are heading for a hum-dinger of a recession, which will see house prices dramatically fall . So do please be careful if you decide to buy a project to renovate.

I sat nodding the entire way through this video at everything you said. I grew up with a dad who loved restoring the home we lived in himself (he's still restoring the current one where we moved in when I was 9, which is 20 years ago, soon 21) and I've always helped around. I know from all that experience and involvement that if a plot costs half a mill, it's typically going to cost 3-5 times that to restore it all back, unless you put in an ungodly amount of labor yourself as you and your brother have done here. I also nodded at the mentions of doing something that everyone thinks is fruitless and a waste of time. The thing they always forget is just that the Universe always falls in love with a stubborn heart, so if another viewer reads this and considers giving up on something they've spent years on, hear me when I say you should soldier on. It's hard, it sucks, but in the end you will succeed, because the universe always falls in love with a stubborn heart. For context on that, I've pulled myself out of a suicidal depression with no help as nobody believed me. I only know it was likely a suicidal depression because I had some talks with a psychologist several years later and they said it sounded like that. I'm also currently at the end of an 8 year long project of cleaning out my stuff, as I've also been a hoarder for most of my life and I had to learn how to stop that. Spoiler alert to anyone thinking it isn't hard: It is, you can't just hire a dump and throw everything out that makes a mess. That's the Reality TV solution for mass entertainment, but in the vast majority of cases it just makes everything worse, as the hoarding is just a physical symptom of severe mental problems that need solving. Throwing out all the stuff and forcing the hoarder to be submissive in these situations is like being an arrogant brat at someone with depression, telling them to smile some more or laugh at someone in a wheelchair, asking them why they haven't run this years local marathon. It doesn't help, it's just being an arrogant asshole.
I cant speak for all the younger generations, but I really hope to see a future filled with older homes that have been redone that still hold their charms and character vs tearing them down to build all new homes. I know it's not always the best route, but I'm so glad you found a house with good bones that did not need to be demolished. It's beautiful, y'all did an AMAZING job.

I hope there isn't some fungus lurking in the shadows, especially if the house was as damp as you described it. That maybe sounds funny but it really isn't. Sometimes you won't see it until it literally starts to eat your floor, if that happens it usually spread a lot inside the building. We did something similar just on a much smaller scale, and while working we discovered that basically the whole ground and the wood was infected by dry rot ( fungus). In Germany you are also not allowed to remove this yourself, so a specialist has to do it. Just the removal of that stuff cost us 40k euro. It was nuts how that stuff grew inside the whole building, even through masonry. Like a spiderweb that grows and grows.
@@oooosparklystuff bricks actually store moisture too, they're somewhat porous - not sure if dry rot can spread through them though, i thought it was limited to organic materials like wood and soil
Reminds me of a tiny little adobe house we rented in New Mexico..It was LR, Kitchen, four bedrooms. To get to the bathroom was through a kitchen to one bedroom bedroom; up three stairs. To get to another bedroom off the living room required walking through a 3rd bedroom to get to the 4th bedroom. So to visit toilet at night meant walking through two other bedrooms. When I learned the family raised eleven kids there all I could think was, "they must have spent a lot of time outside".

Pretty sure this is his full time job... In his other videos he says about leaving his 9to5 job in London. Also he has multiple renovations over a short period of time, which would be impossible while having a full time job.

I did a place up in mid wales with the ex and we both worked very hard. Like this project we uncovered all sorts of stuff just in the garden. However the end result was well worth it. We did not do it for profit, but just to create a bolt hole. We learned a lot doing it and got to know loads of great people that helped with the project. The good news for the new owner was that it was done properly.
Amazing transformation. Have to be thankful for people who don’t demolish history but give it a new life. Doing the same here in Australia myself with a 103 year old abandoned house. Some days I think it will never be finished and the costs keep going up. After watching your video I know eventually it will all come together and be completed.

I work with window design . I found your window cost interesting. I'm sure you have different companies than we do in united states. Our major companies are Pella, Andersen and Jeldwen. In the US, registered historic buildings require wood, or wood clad windows. they tend to be quite expensive. One 36 x 72 double hung window would be around $1,700 US. A double casement window would be around $3000. A double French patio door 72 x 80 would be $1,500 to $6,500 depending on steel, fiberglass or wood clad. With that said, you guys did a wonder job. The house looks beautiful.
I’m 82 and I have renovated 572 house and made 200 million dollars and spent only about 20 million on renovations so it is a great investment and awesome to see your work come to life

I have spent many many years wanting to open my own business. I've been so convinced that I can't do it and there is too much against me. I've been so gripped by the fear of failure and disappointment. As of the last week I have decided to stop allowing myself to get in my own way and do this. My husband has been so supportive and it is finally happening. I can't believe it is finally happening. But I still had doubt. Don't listen to the critics, or feel you have to explain yourself. My husband and I spent years renovating and adding a large addition on so we know very well the time it takes and the money. You weren't kidding when you emphasized every spare moment, every weekend, every vacation is spent on doing these projects! But you are so right it is more than worth it. Me and my sister bought a house in east london in 2013. we lived in it, and have now decided to rent it all out to a family. Put in an offer for another house that hasn't been accepted yet. we are in our 50s and would love to do what you do, but don't have the skill or energy. My hat is absolutely off you you for being honest about how miserable the whole process was for you re the strains that it put on your life and the huge sacrifices that you made to get it finished. I have done 2 projects like this in my life, and the reality of them was just like you described. No upbeat socials reels, no fake spin on everything for "entertainment", just the honest reality of the experience. But just as you proved, you get the rewards from putting in the effort.

I would love to leave in the UK. However, its a bit too expensive for me. However, I did buy land to build on and have a lock up and leave in Europe. That being said, I am terrified of the costs to renovate the Lock up and to build. But great job.
It's lovely. As someone who works outside a lot in my own garden I was really hoping to see the outside afterwards and the out buildings but perhaps we can see them on another video.If there is about £400k profit or may be 500k then let us say £250k each, capital gains tax at 28% assuming not bought inside a company applied after costs - may be paid so about £180k profit after tax each is my guess. We bought and did up 2 flats in the 1980s and sold them at 50% losses ( I call them the buy to lose flats) and then sold our family home at a loss too in 1990 (all this is London).... sigh... however all that sacrifice to pay back mortgages over decades did mean I ended up with a nice house so all is well.....

My late husband and I bought a structurally sound house I very poor condition but we had done up a fair few 🎉similar houses and also worked out we would get an extra section ( on a lower level with no access until we put one in.) everyone thought it was section price only, we paid a little more so we bought it for a reasonable price here in New Zealand. I enjoyed the work and challenge but at 76 now retired.😊
I'm currently toying with the idea of buying a similar abandoned project outright and renovating, able to do everything bar electric and plumbing myself. Did one a few years ago knocked the £280K bungalow down built a 3 story 5 bed sold for £2.1M minus materials and labour. Totally worth it if you have the time, an extra pair of hands and funds available. Nice build

They should take a leaf out of bricks and disorder's book. However those blokes are marketing experts. Not everyone has time and energy to film something to a professional level while they're also renovating, and then also spend the time editing. Video creation is a lot of work in and of itself when you're also working like a dog trying to do the actual Reno work
You should both be very proud of yourselves, how much time you gave up and how tired you must have been that transformation is just staggeringly beautiful. When you said at the beginning about those four hidden buildings, I knew there were be so much shrubbery to clear away. The hard work in this project must have been immense.
Developers wanted it to pull the house down and put up 5 or 6 ugly modern chicken coup style identical houses to make a large quick profit. Well done for your effort and brilliant and beautiful renovation.
I've done it too, blimey it's hard work, myself and a friend completely stripped back and renovated a flat with a bunch of Polish builders. When it's all stripped out you look at it and think .. this is literally a stable! Same as yourselves, we worked every evening and weekends + the to do list was endless. Such dirty work initially, real hard and horrible jobs one after the other. You did a great job here, personally I think the styling is a bit too contemporary for the style of the priority and the en suite bathroom compromises the bedroom considerably but all the same, well done, a great result.

As an architecture student I also wanna thank you for retrofitting this house. We really need to think about how best to be sustainable with every choice we make and it was a more sustainable choice to reuse the structure instead of demolishing it
@tatesmith253: It wasn’t about sustainability It was financial, he comments in the video the numbers didn’t stack up to demolish and rebuild, it would cost further £500k -£600k on top of the original £500k purchase price, better to refurbish what already exists.
Property developers really have the balls to look at a literal hovel, with human feces piled outside, an exploded toilet and 100% humidity in all of the rooms and say "yeah, £500k".

As a woman,I had a vision at 32, totally remodeled a two story two bath, four bedroom, two large living rooms, large kitchen home in the country on Eight acres, with a pond. Cleared all the land, dug up out of the woods, dogwoods, redbuds, bushels of daffodils and shrubs, planted fruit trees, hauled in landscaping rocks. Tore down a barn, house, eight outbuildings for the lumber and architectural ornamentation, Our children all helped in the process. I started my own antique furniture restorration business, combed the coutryside for throw aways, giveaways. And then used the equity for my husband to start his own successful business. We paid 32,000 and sold it for 300,000, 30 years later. Bought another home, remodeled it sold it, then repeat. I'm 84, on social security, no house or car payment, no credit card debt, not on any medications. All according to plan. I loved every step of the way !

My parents bought a plot of land in Canada with one outhouse (outside bathroom) on it. We parked a caravan on it, moved in and then my parents spent a year building our house to the point where we could safely move in while my dad worked 9 - 5 in another city. The only things they hired outsiders for were pouring the basement foundation, the framing, electrical and some plumbing. My parents installed drywall, built the wood kitchen cabinets from scratch, laid and stained the hardwood flooring, bricked the entire exterior and shingled the two story roof (whilst my dad was afraid of heights!). They then did all the finishes - painting, etc. My mum sewed all the window coverings. And they were very skilled at it all, even though my dad was an office worker and had barely lifted a hammer prior to this odyssey. They landscaped the outside which meant clearing the land of a lot of scrub, and making beautiful perennial gardens. I remember it took about ten years before everything was finally done to their satisfaction. We suffered through a very cold Canadian winter in that caravan (a time when I came down with mumps as a nine year old - being very sick in a caravan without a shower was not fun). My brother and I helped a fair bit (they would insist they didn't need our help, but we felt bad for reading our comic books while they laboured). When I hear people say "We built our own house/cottage", I can't help but ask "You mean - with your own hands, or did you hire people?". They almost always admit they didn't do it all themselves. I can't help but feel a bit smug. Keep on doing what you are doing. You are not only building homes, but character as well!
I remember renovating my house, standing in the bedroom on Christmas day with no walls plumbing or electrics thinking 'wtf have I done!', 2 yrs later it's all done, by myself and my dad, and couldn't agree more with everything you've said in this video.

Having renovated a house that hid horrors at ever turn, i can fully appreciate the emotions involved. Also, you can't rely on people to care as much as you do. There's that part where you reach the 'oh my god, what have i done' but one through this, it get easier. Nice work. I tip my hat to you.

You probably won't even read this , but I love in the state of Wisconsin,USA. What you spent on your Reno was not alot I thought you were going to say 3 or 4 hundred thousand. It would cost that much in the States. And where you are everything costs a lot more. You two did a stand up job. It's Beautiful and cozy, It's not my style but you know when you work on Reno's for customers you do what they like. We just have to put there vision to life. That was actually one of the most satisfying things I have seen on UA-cam. Something about your voice that is very motivating to listen to. Some people talk, and my brain switches off. Would love to see the grounds too. That was proper grafting, most people in the world aren't capable of this, because we have been nannied into being redundant, if it isn't handed to us on a plate, we don't know how to do it ourselves. Split up the mortgage, buy cheap, make it make sense, and get grafting!

No, I think we can completely understand the approach of completely destroying the building and rebuilding in its place. At the end of the day, what havesomevision did here with his brother is extraordinary and involved major personal sacrifice. We cannot expect most investors to do that.

They mainly used their own labour, that’s where you keep costs down, but completion takes much longer.
I wanted to tell you that you did an amazing job! I live in Canada and we bought a run down house in an expensive community (we normally couldn't afford to live in) my husband renovated it all then we lived in it for 15 years. After that we were able to sell it and take our profits and fully pay off our smaller retirement home. It definitely pays to make your dream happen rather than wait to buy something brand new. Had we done that we wouldn't be mortgage free now as prices are crazy high here. Love the video ❤

@ I started in my mid 20s, I finally stopped 3 years ago at age 62.. it enabled me to be mortgage free at age 40 and also owned a second house which I rented out for a few years..
I have now sold and invested the profits from the second home and invested that in to an inflation hedge which hopefully help protect my hard earned income for my retirement… I must add the housing market is a very different beast today , and I believe we are heading for a hum-dinger of a recession, which will see house prices dramatically fall . So do please be careful if you decide to buy a project to renovate.

I sat nodding the entire way through this video at everything you said. I grew up with a dad who loved restoring the home we lived in himself (he's still restoring the current one where we moved in when I was 9, which is 20 years ago, soon 21) and I've always helped around. I know from all that experience and involvement that if a plot costs half a mill, it's typically going to cost 3-5 times that to restore it all back, unless you put in an ungodly amount of labor yourself as you and your brother have done here. I also nodded at the mentions of doing something that everyone thinks is fruitless and a waste of time. The thing they always forget is just that the Universe always falls in love with a stubborn heart, so if another viewer reads this and considers giving up on something they've spent years on, hear me when I say you should soldier on. It's hard, it sucks, but in the end you will succeed, because the universe always falls in love with a stubborn heart.
For context on that, I've pulled myself out of a suicidal depression with no help as nobody believed me. I only know it was likely a suicidal depression because I had some talks with a psychologist several years later and they said it sounded like that. I'm also currently at the end of an 8 year long project of cleaning out my stuff, as I've also been a hoarder for most of my life and I had to learn how to stop that. Spoiler alert to anyone thinking it isn't hard: It is, you can't just hire a dump and throw everything out that makes a mess. That's the Reality TV solution for mass entertainment, but in the vast majority of cases it just makes everything worse, as the hoarding is just a physical symptom of severe mental problems that need solving. Throwing out all the stuff and forcing the hoarder to be submissive in these situations is like being an arrogant brat at someone with depression, telling them to smile some more or laugh at someone in a wheelchair, asking them why they haven't run this years local marathon. It doesn't help, it's just being an arrogant asshole.

I hope there isn't some fungus lurking in the shadows, especially if the house was as damp as you described it. That maybe sounds funny but it really isn't. Sometimes you won't see it until it literally starts to eat your floor, if that happens it usually spread a lot inside the building.
We did something similar just on a much smaller scale, and while working we discovered that basically the whole ground and the wood was infected by dry rot ( fungus).
In Germany you are also not allowed to remove this yourself, so a specialist has to do it.
Just the removal of that stuff cost us 40k euro.
It was nuts how that stuff grew inside the whole building, even through masonry.

Reminds me of a tiny little adobe house we rented in New Mexico..It was LR, Kitchen, four bedrooms. To get to the bathroom was through a kitchen to one bedroom bedroom; up three stairs. To get to another bedroom off the living room required walking through a 3rd bedroom to get to the 4th bedroom. So to visit toilet at night meant walking through two other bedrooms. When I learned the family raised eleven kids there all I could think was, "they must have spent a lot of time outside".

I did a place up in mid wales with the ex and we both worked very hard. Like this project we uncovered all sorts of stuff just in the garden. However the end result was well worth it. We did not do it for profit, but just to create a bolt hole. We learned a lot doing it and got to know loads of great people that helped with the project. The good news for the new owner was that it was done properly.

I work with window design . I found your window cost interesting. I'm sure you have different companies than we do in united states. Our major companies are Pella, Andersen and Jeldwen. In the US, registered historic buildings require wood, or wood clad windows. they tend to be quite expensive. One 36 x 72 double hung window would be around $1,700 US. A double casement window would be around $3000. A double French patio door 72 x 80 would be $1,500 to $6,500 depending on steel, fiberglass or wood clad. With that said, you guys did a wonder job. The house looks beautiful.

I would love to leave in the UK. However, its a bit too expensive for me. However, I did buy land to build on and have a lock up and leave in Europe. That being said, I am terrified of the costs to renovate the Lock up and to build. But great job.
It's lovely. As someone who works outside a lot in my own garden I was really hoping to see the outside afterwards and the out buildings but perhaps we can see them on another video.If there is about £400k profit or may be 500k then let us say £250k each, capital gains tax at 28% assuming not bought inside a company applied after costs - may be paid so about £180k profit after tax each is my guess. We bought and did up 2 flats in the 1980s and sold them at 50% losses ( I call them the buy to lose flats) and then sold our family home at a loss too in 1990 (all this is London).... sigh... however all that sacrifice to pay back mortgages over decades did mean I ended up with a nice house so all is well.....

My late husband and I bought a structurally sound house I very poor condition but we had done up a fair few 🎉similar houses and also worked out we would get an extra section ( on a lower level with no access until we put one in.) everyone thought it was section price only, we paid a little more so we bought it for a reasonable price here in New Zealand. I enjoyed the work and challenge but at 76 now retired.😊

This reminds me of the first house my sister bought, chipping off the plaster only to find the bottom 1/3rd was in fact concrete, not plaster. "You're running with a wheelbarrow, not walking" ..So true.

They should take a leaf out of bricks and disorder's book. However those blokes are marketing experts. Not everyone has time and energy to film something to a professional level while they're also renovating, and then also spend the time editing. Video creation is a lot of work in and of itself when you're also working like a dog trying to do the actual Reno work
You should both be very proud of yourselves, how much time you gave up and how tired you must have been that transformation is just staggeringly beautiful. When you said at the beginning about those four hidden buildings, I knew there were be so much shrubbery to clear away. The hard work in this project must have been immense.
Developers wanted it to pull the house down and put up 5 or 6 ugly modern chicken coup style identical houses to make a large quick profit. Well done for your effort and brilliant and beautiful renovation.

I've done it too, blimey it's hard work, myself and a friend completely stripped back and renovated a flat with a bunch of Polish builders. When it's all stripped out you look at it and think .. this is literally a stable! Same as yourselves, we worked every evening and weekends + the to do list was endless. Such dirty work initially, real hard and horrible jobs one after the other. You did a great job here, personally I think the styling is a bit too contemporary for the style of the priority and the en suite bathroom compromises the bedroom considerably but all the same, well done, a great result.
