So proud of being a friend with Tommy Collins--a super guy who was responsible for getting Buck into the music business---he was also responsible for Merle Haggard getting into the music business----they were Tommy's guitar players before they became mega stars and also Tommy wrote many songs recorded by Merle and many others. Tommy was at our house for meals and snowmobiling----and Buck was on Hee Haw and sang with Susan Raye on Hee Haw and she Married Buck's drummer---her cousin was married to my dad's cousin.

"Open Up Your Heart" is the proto-typical Buck penned song. Like "Love'Gonna Live Her" and many others, he sees blues skies and sunshine if only his love returns his affections. It's tension is in the present state where his love's return is uncertain, but he's optimistic in the future. No pessimistic blues here although he wrote a few of those too. Search out all the other early Buck episodes on You Tube. He usually opens the show with one of his great self- penned songs.

douglasd53 Buck played a lot of the lead guitar on the instrumentals. And it's interesting to note that Don didn't always sing the high harmony on their records. Most of the time it was Buck singing harmony with himself!

Unfortunately CASHville makes it damn near impossible for any TRUE COUNTRY TALENT to make it big. Now all that floods the airwaves is rehashed 80s hair metal with a fella out front over-accentuating a southern drawl to try and fool us into thinking he's country. JUST CRAP!!!!!

Buck was a business man too! No go fund me page for his funeral. Radio stations, club, land and the assorted books he sold on the show. Hee Haw wasn't his favorite gig but he cashed the checks! And he would have donated every penny to get Don back. Too bad that doesn't work.

The Buck Owens Ranch show ran in syndication across the country and pre-dates HEE HAW. It started in 1966 and ran until 1973. I believe there were about 103 episodes. There are only about 3 of these episodes available on DVD and you can order them from www.buckowens.com website. The Owens estate owns the show. Only reason I know is that I worked for Buck at one of his country stations at one time.

This is the first episode that the 66 Silver Sparkle Telecaster is shown. Fender probably wanted it on television ASAP, seeing as how Buck had a Fender endorsement, and Don might have not had time to get it broken in all the way.
