Im from Bakersfield born and raised ...Met Buck a few times one time at the Crystal Palace with a buddy of mine that was going through a bad breakup and he needed someone to talk to so we met at the Crystal Palace up at the bar we ate lunch and had a couple beers my buddy was pretty upset and as we were talking Buck came walking in and said " how you boys doing"?...my buddy said what he was going through and Buck pulled up a seat and talked with us for prob a half hour...it was amazing almost like he was a grandpa we hadnt seen for awhile ...we stayed there about 2 hours and when we were ready to leave I asked the bartender for the check and he said " buck said this ones on him"....It was just one of the moments that you will remember forever......after he passed I found out that he did alot for people but one of the conditions he didnt want anyone like the media to even know about it.

I love and can vouched for that place being awesome in every way! And that’s coming from a guy who’s played in punk bands my whole life, but loves all kinds of music… especially real country music played how the Buck Owens, George Jones, Dwight Yoakam, Waylon Jennings, George Straight, Ernest Tubb, Willie Nelson, Alan Jackson, and more from those time periods of real country do/did it.

At the beginning of September of this year I was hospitalized with Covid-19, I spent about 4 to 5 days in ICU not sure if I was going to make it , the doctors asking me if I wanted a Priest and if I wanted to be put on a ventilator if it came to that, I was scared that I would not see my children and wife again, that I was going to die alone but I fought back did what the nurses and doctors told me to do and I was well enough to be put in a regular Covid room because I was getting better. I had to sit in a chair from the time I awoke till I had to sleep, your videos have kept me company while I was convalescing in the hospital and still today. Your trips and stories kept my mind occupied with places I would love to visit and hopefully one day I will. Just want to say thank you Jeff and Sarah for making my dark days a little bit brighter.

I met Buck Owens in 2005. I had went back to visit my friends at the Henry Ford Estate that I had worked with. I ended up talking to him about my mother's record she had of his and described how he was wearing a long-sleeve shirt and he recognized the album immediately. He shook my hand and was very nice. He told me that when my friends talk to me my friends call me buck. I used to watch TV all the time to the seventies and eighties. Jeff thanks again for the wonderful memories.

I also grew up with He Haw, Buck Owens and Roy Clark. I greatly enjoyed their music and all of their show members and guests. We were a 5 member family living a far way away from this. 3 of my family members are still alive and from time to time we get together and talk about the earlier times, He Haw is always mentioned. Peace to all of their souls, Roy passed on my 55th birthday, and I still listen to Buck's and Roy's records. Buck was the pioneer of the Bakersfeild sound in Country Music and should always remain as the King of it.

Here's a fun fact for you, Dwight Yoakum could've been in The Dark Knight playing the Banker who own the bank. Thanks for sharing. Around 2000 I saw a tv documentary on his life. I became fascinated with his music and Bakersfield sound. I bought a TELECASTER because of him. The next summer , me and the missus decided to vacation a week in LA. Flew from Omaha. First stop? i rented a car and drove to BAKERSFIELD. I had made reservations months and months prior to see a show on a weekend at the Crystal Palace, and a room at the hotel next door. Place opens up, We are the only ones at the door, hours before the show. Holding my Carnegie Hall live LP hoping to get an autograph that night. As we checked in at door, the hostess says, Sorry to inform you, but Buck called in sick tonite, and he never calls in sick. I was floored. Totally disappointed, but watched his band. I remember a couple saying how they were disappointed , driving 2 hours away. I flew from Omaha, but it is what it is. I did contact the Crystal Palace when i got home via email. Told them had good time, but missed not seeing Buck. A week later, unexpectedly, i get an autographed 8X10 pic of Buck in the mail from the Palace. Was sad when he passed away. A true legend and pioneer.

7:09 A missing part of Buck's legacy from this story regarding his connection to Bakersfield is he paid to have those "BAKERSFIELD" letters restored and put back up on a custom made arch at The Crystal Palace. Those letters originally hung at the South side of the intersection of California Avenue, and Union for decades. It was a pedestrian overpass that connected the two sides of the Bakersfield Hotel. Union Avenue was the original route through Bakersfield before the 99 freeway. The yellow arch with "BAKERSFIELD" spelled out on both sides welcomed people entering, and leaving the city when Union Avenue was the main highway through town. This intersection can be seen in a clip from "Any Which Way You Can" with Clint Eastwood.

You did justice to Buck, "The King of Bakersfield".
My grandmother had us watch HeeHaw, she loved that show, as do I.
I travel thru there monthly and have done so for over a half dozen years. One of the top things on my bucket list is the Crystal Palace. I looked it up, and it is listed as temporarily closed. So hopefully it will re-open.
I also looked up the Beetles and "Act Naturally", I did not know before your video.
For the record, I got a place up at Pine Flat-California Hot Springs and I live and work in Los Angeles. One of Buck's X wives lives there. I don't know which one, though I could find out in one phone call; I wouldn't put it here.
Right now, it is being threatened by the Windy Fire.
    Anyway, thank you, wonderful video!
Suggestions are: Anything with Buck Owens, Dwight Yoakam, California Hot Springs-Pine Flat, White River (the town, there were multiple shootouts there historically, the river had some placer prospecting), Camp Nelson, Johnsondale (lumber mill), or anything in that area. There were also some Indian troubles that are still talked about in that area that mainstream history glosses over and/or doesn't mention.

His son Jack was a friend and coworker of mine back in the 80's. Jack never gets mentioned though he actually produced some of his father records. In fact I knew him for a few years before I learned he was Buck's son. I found out only because Buck called at work to speak to Jack while he was recording with Ringo in London.

I grew up in Bakersfield as a kid and lived right up the street from Bucks radio station. I remember his Cadillac being parked out front and I would just stare at it in awe of all the horns cow hides dingle dangles and such. He would always tell me to work hard and someday I could get a Cadillac just like it. Later after my high school years I would chat with him at the Crystal palace and he said he remembered me when I was a kid. I was serving in Iraq when I heard of the news that he had passed, really hit me hard and never really got over it. He inspired me to become a musician which I still do to this day. Thanks Buck for Everything you're missed. Thanks for sharing this

I was lucky enough to see Buck and Dwight at the Crystal Palace. Amazingly fun experience.
Bakersfield was a side trip after visiting the Roy Roger's museum. A life long dream not unlike your mom and Graceland. My husband refused to stop at RR museum but stopped for gas across the street. Talk about painful but so grateful to have the opportunity later in life.

Years ago when I was purchasing a couple of plots, the funeral director had offered me the option to purchase that mausoleum he said it belonged to Buck Owens and that he was selling it. It was in the hundreds of thousands.
So really not sure if he had planned to be somewhere else. But he sooned passed away.
Maybe someone can shed more light on this.
Also at the Cystal Palace my family were there and he made mention of my father in law Earl Shelton " thats the son of a bi..h who beat me out of the front page of the NY Times"
You can see my father in law on you tube " weedpatch camp" the Grapes of wrath was about that camp.

I am a native Californian 58 years old, and had never been to Bakersfield until last year, 2020. I was sad to see the Crystal Palace closed. I was also a great Fan of Buck Owns, and of Hee Haw. Im of Mexican decent, but it's amazing how that show transcended cultured, because i had many friends that watched. He and Roy were wonderful and oh so talented. My husband and i were so impressed with tge lovely people of Bakersfield that we are seriously thinking of moving there. Bakersfield may be in California, but it's nothing like the towns 2 hous south or 4 hours north! Its like a transplanted Texas small town, and I love it! ❤❤❤🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲

Jeff , the details you give your videos is amazing. So much information and great clips of Buck. What a legend he was! He created the Bakersfield sound. My brother sent me this information from the past:
You know Buck used to go walk around the Hot Rod Reunion in Bakersfield, My wife and I saw him and I wish I had taken a photo of him, I know the NHRA National Dragster newspaper had photos and a story about him at the time, he had been going to the Bakersfield drags for years! In fact on Friday nights during the reunion they have dragsters and restored drag cars all over Bakersfield hot spots, hotels, restaurants, IN-N-OUT etc. and there are always a couple over at Buck’s Crystal Palace, his son Buddy runs it now, very cool. (Before its closure) What a great guy Buck was!

Thank you very much, Diane. I heard Buck was very down to earth and friendly with all of his fans. It was his humble upbringing, I am sure. Unfortunately I never once went inside the Crystal Palace, probably since it was a bar and my late wife frowned upon those kind of places. Knowing Buck performed there every weekend adds to my level of regret of not making a point to see him there.

I truly loved the sight of the Bakersfield Sign. It was originally located over Union Street, just south of California Ave. The Bakersfield Inn, located on the West side of Union Ave (the former U.S. Highway 99), expanded by building a satellite wing on the eastern side. The arch was built as a footbridge across the busy highway to connect the satellite to the main hotel.
In 1972, I went to a conference held at the Bakersfield Inn. Crossed that bridge several times. In 1992, after returning from 3 years overseas, I planned an overnight stop in Bakersfield. I was very depressed to find the hotel and arch abandoned and fenced off. Sad.
Different subject, Jeff. Not long ago, I came across a Wikipedia article that had a link to the Ceres, CA, article. In it, it says that a Jeff Benziger was appointed editor of the CERES COURIER in 1987. Are you one in the same?

Been to the Crystal Palace many times to see Buck. I live in Arizona but the majority of my family still resides in Bakersfield. On my yearly visit to Bakersfield I never missed a chance to go to see Buck play. I was so glad when he purchased than big Bakersfield sign and kept it from being demolished. For nearly 30 years I lived in the Chandler Arizona area my Buck had spent some time in Chandler Heights years and years before in the cotton fields back before he had reached California. At one of his shows in the audience I mentioned I was from Chandler and he remembered that place and asked me if it was still there. Back when he was there it was nothing but a little hole in the wall town nothing but Agriculture and bars. Now it’s quite a huge city.

@@jbenziggy Well you’re not missing much. Unless of course you like crowded towns with lots of freeways, people, and shopping centers on every corner. When I first moved there in 87 we were in a tiny little subdivision out in the boondocks with nothing but agriculture and foothills that surrounded us. It is now businesses, condos, and homes everywhere. Me and the wife moved out in 2005 to get away from it all. Now for the time being I am back stuck in Phoenix. Would like to get back to Bakersfield, back to where I grew up. Bakersfield definitely has its ups and downs as well but that’s where my family is. Thank you so much for posting the video regarding Buck by the way. And your other videos as well. I just discovered you yesterday and subscribed to your videos ‘channel’. Beautiful video! I don't know the exact details, but Buck Owens and some other big names of the day, recorded personal performances on tape for Apollo astronauts to listen to on their way to the Moon. They would have listened to them on those little cassette players like we see floating around in the movie "Apollo 13". The recordings had little hellos and hat-tips to the astronauts on their trip, most of whom adored country music.

My daddy's absolute favorite singer! I grew up on Hee Haw and that red, white, and blue guitar. It was a happy day when I got to finally take him and my mom to see the Crystal Palace! He loved it! The museum was wonderful! They also had the best food! It was getting too late and we couldn't stay to see Dwight Yoakam. We had also tried to find Buck's mausoleum, but that local cemetery is a chain, and of course we tromped through the wrong one. UGH! So everyone be aware that you have to check which campus of that cemetery he is in--the newer one with the pond! Very helpful to show that! xoxo
