I totally relate to double cleansing causing skin issues. I was double cleansing every night (since I wear sunscreen) but seemed to always be breaking out. I started eliminating things from my routine and I figured out it was the cleansing balm. Now I only wash my face once with my cleanser and it takes my sunscreen off fine. When I do wear makeup I’ll use the balm to take it off (which is usually once a week.) Now my skin looks so much better. Skincare UA-cam made me feel like I must be double cleansing and i’ve learned double cleansing isn’t always necessary and doesn’t work for everyone.

Oil cleanser clogged my pores so much! I was in denial about it for ages but I just randomly bought a micellar water and used it for a few days (with a regular cleanser afterwards) and my skin TRANSFORMED.

I'm not sure what your take is, but I always soak a cotton round in micellar water, hold it over my eye makeup with my eye closed (gently!), and then (gently!) wipe it away after it sits for 10 to 15 seconds. It does a phenomenal job of taking it off, and it allows me to use a gentler cleanser to get the SPF and foundation off at the end of the day, too. I used to double cleanse, but when I realized just how well micellar water takes off my waterproof eye makeup, I switched. (I don't use ONLY micellar water to cleanse. I always follow with a cleanser like Cetaphil or something similar.)

Double cleansing has greatly upset my rosacea. It didn’t begin burning until I started double cleansing with Burts Bees Oil Cleanser (not saying for certain that it caused it). I’ve discontinued it, but what’s done is done. Two weeks and still on and off burning.
Vanicream gentle facial cleanse is a miracle. Just tried it a week ago and am absolutely sold on it.

I absolutely love the closing thoughts, starting at 14:40. Months ago, I decided to forego foundation altogether and focus on great skin… cleansing is orders of magnitude easier and my skin gets healthier by the day. It took some time and effort, but I feel great with untinted SPF with a small amount of translucent powder. My new approach makes cleansing so much easier. Also, my white tops thank me :)

I ordered Dr Sams cleanser. A small bottle to try it. Wow, honestly, it is brilliant! So my pores are refined, my skin is actually clean. I cleaned my face with her cleanser, then used a miscellar water to test the cleanliness. Nothing on the cotton wipe. I shall order the full size when I’ve finished the smaller one.

I’m always on the look out for gentle cleansers for my sensitive rosacea skin. So far, I like Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser, the Cerave Hydrating Cleanser (original or cream to foam), LRP Toleraine Cleanser & a recent discovery - Curel Gel Cleanser (a strange slightly tackier texture). I’m also keen to try Aveeno Face Calm & Restore Nourishing Oat Cleanser and the Simple micellar gel wash. I always use Simple micellar water if I wear eye makeup (usually only mascara).

Choosing a cleanser: 1 type helps most people (ideally don’t double cleanse)- non fragrance, non-comedogenic- balms and oils are worse, non foaming, gel based is nicer. Cera ve Sal cleanser is a good gel cleanser. Avene tolerance extreme cleansing lotion. How to clean: wet skin first with warm water, 1-2 pumps each use. About a quarter size of product. Massage product into skin, rinse off. Very dry skin can do water free cleanser like micellar water. Just use your hands to cleanse, no need for towels, scrubs or any tools, just fingers, maybe could use wet cotton pad but nothing that creates friction. Be gentle with skin. Skin should be comfortable not tight after cleansing. Dr Sam doesn’t like double cleansing, believes it will make skin more irritated.

I found peace with Niod LVCE to remove dirt, spf, makeup (removes everthing with no effort, glides like silk, it's super gentle. I guarantee you swipe your neck and cotton pad gets gross despite showering every day), then follow with a gentle mousse cleanser such as the Cetaphil. In the AM I only wash eyes with water.

And instead putting focus on that we need the right one step cleanser for your needs for evening and morning!! Very refreshing indeed!! Thank you for this very informative video, Dr. Sam. I have been doing double cleansing for years now, and I am guessing that I have been doing the wrong thing the whole time? I have sensitive skin and I take care of it very carefully but sometimes it feels a little tight after I cleanse my face. And another thing, I thought for some reasons that my skin had to be dry before applying the milk cleanser or the oil cleanser. Then to cleanse it off I use a wet muslin cloth. I will definitely try to follow your advice and see if my skin is less dehydrated. Thank you and lots of love from Italy 🤗

It is so refreshing to hear you say that a single cleanse is enough, it’s fine to gently cleanse in the morning and to stay away from longwear foundations. This validates my own experience on what works best for me. It really is a vicious cycle, to use pore filling primers, long wear foundations, and then oily cleansers just to get it all off. My rosacea skin hates this! Double cleansing is just a trend. I’ve gone back to using MAC Face & Body for my foundation, no primer other than moisturizer / SPF and the CeraVe hydrating cleanser and CeraVe PM at the end of the day. The CeraVe SA for my body which has removed my bumps. I will have to try the Avene you suggest. Thank you 🌸 Ginger was remarkable docile in this one 🤔 🐱 Did you drug him? ha ha

This was great! I have extremely reactive, dry skin with lots of allergies that gets dehydrated easily. Going by one of your earlier videos, I tried water cleansing in the morning. I think it worked pretty well, but using a cleanser lightly seems to work better for me. It actually helps with hydration.
I don’t think you’ll reply, but I’ll ask this just in case. Moving from well to city water was a bad thing for my skin. It went from being moderately dry to extremely dry and parched with a damaged skin barrier as a result. How do you counteract highly chlorinated tap water?

I use a cream cleanser, but do find at night a single cleanse using fingers only does not do a good job removing sunscreen. I use the eraser wash cloth very mildly and don't even pat dry, going straight into skincare. In the morning I only use tepid water and go into my morning routine. With my dry skin this seems to work best during the winter months. I don't sleep with the heat on above 60° and use a cool mist humidifier year round. I visit my dermatologist twice a year and her spa every couple of months for a facial, they use fragrance free products in her office.

I so appreciate you and all your advice Dr Sam. But I don't agree in regards to doing a double cleanse. It is the only thing that will lift multiple layers of water resistant sunscreen and eye makeup without irritating or drying out my skin. I use cleansing oil on dry skin, and it rinses off almost completely once it hits water because it has an emulsifier that allows it to dissolve away in water. I then follow up with a gentle cleanser such as Cerave hydrating. This is what allows me to just use my fingertips without needing washcloths or anything else, otherwise the makeup and the sunscreen does not come off.

Highly recommended by my dermatologist. Their soothing, nourishing and skin barrier safe creams and micellar waters, sprays and toners&essences are the top notch dermatology recommended and tested on numerous clients as well. My own skin (49 years old) can absolutely testify to their quality. Guess, marketing industry is affecting numerous skin care videos, revolving mainly around the brands they want to at a given point of time or trend

I did try Dr. Sam’s single cleanse method with her cleanser and it just did not work for me as I was never getting everything off my face. when I would dry my face with a towel I would see leftover tinted sunscreen or make up. I was definitely doing it for a minute or more with the right amount and I hardly wear any make up if any at all. Currently I am doing a double cleanse but I have been wondering if my cleansing balm is clogging my pores so I might try and oil next that doesn’t have ethylhexyl palmitate. So she’s definitely right about that, cleansing balms and oils can clog pores. It’s interesting because she is only Dermatologist I watch that does not recommend a double cleanse. Her cleanser definitely was nice. 😊

Hi Dr Sam I really like the Avene cleanser shown and the one in the anti redness line - both are a good fit for me. I can use these to take off a light makeup (including eye makeup) and my colder month spf application without any issues, but for heavier makeup and multiple layers of water resistant spf an oil cleanser works far better (or a double cleanse). I'm super dry with both rosacea type one and eczema, so i'm not really prone to clogged pores or pimples. In the morning I often use a misceller water and a quick rinse, as I don't want to leave cleanser residue on the skin tbh. I do use gentle unfragranced cleansers, but gel cleansers are really a Summer only thing for me - they're not hydrating enough otherwise. I'm in that minority of having very dry skin (worsened due to menopause) and most cleansers supposedly suitable for "all skin types" don't work for me. I like oils, creams and lotions far far better. Best wishes.

If you haven't tried micellar water as a first step for removing hard-to-remove makeup, it may be an option for you. It's super gentle, but in my opinion, it does require an after-cleanse. I use micellar water first to soak off my eye makeup (and stubborn foundation if necessary, but most cleansers take off SPF and foundation fairly well) and then go in with Cetaphil or CeraVe cleanser. My face is always clean and it's so gente. The micellar water does not irritate my eyes at all. I use the Garnier one with the blue cap.

I think the oil cleanser breaks down makeup and spf on the face quicker and with a lot less wiping/friction. It’s very much what suits each of us as individuals. The milk cleanser is another great option and really hydrating. X

Dr. Sam, what are your thoughts about foreo devices? Do you think They are safe to use every day or its Better to stick with your hands to cleanse the skin?
I m thinking for a long time to buy one due the amazing reviews, but they are SO expensive.
I have very sensitive skin, but very oily and clogged. I cannot use leave on salicilic acid because it irritates my skin so much, and the wash off forms that i find are to drying.
I m current using adapalene 1% and it helps a lot, but I Still have a lot of blackheads.

I asked this question as well and my derm said a micellar water first, then the gentle cleanser should be enough to remove your SPF.

Also wondering about water resistant sunscreen as well as water proof mascara. I read eye makeup removers were drying and regular gentle cleansers wouldnt take off all sunscreen and makeup. Wow. Confusing.

I have been washing my face morning and night for 52 years (since I was 13). I have combination skin that is clear like this lady (only obviously older!). I have used Andrea makeup remover pads (blue jar) for easily 30 years (probably 40) and definitely has not dried out my eye area (don’t buy the non-oily). I only learned about double cleansing from Dr Dray a year ago and LOVE it...use Neutrogena Body Oil (after using the eye pads to remove waterproof mascara) which melts away all makeup followed by whatever cleanser you like (I’ve begun mixing the cleanser before washing off oil and like how that works, gets face totally clean of all makeup). I have used harsh scrubs over the years but now use gentle scrubs (mostly in the morning). I splash my face at least 10-15 times and then pat my face slightly but again learned the trick of applying moisturiser to damp skin from Dr Dray and so much better! Also begun ‘slugging’ (pressing on Vaseline just before bed). Use a satin pillowcase and try to sleep on my back. This routine has kept my skin in very very good condition and perfect base for makeup which I wear everyday! Hope this helps.

I use ZERO for makeup remover which and don’t use makeup much. Also, there are some just specifically for the eyes. Clinique purple eye make up remover has never dried eyes.

My skin is extremely reactive. Even so, no matter what cleanser I use, I always have to remove my makeup before cleansing or it doesn’t all get removed.
I assume that you aren’t fond of micellar waters. When a person is incapable of getting to a sink, how would you suggest that they cleanse their skin instead? To clarify, I am confined to bed at times but still want to care for my skin. What would you suggest?

My derm recommends Bioderma sensibio micellar water and I really like it. Another option is the wipe off cleanser from Avene that Dr Sam talked about

I really love this channel and especially the videos about retinoids, but here I see pushing people to some wrong practices. I tried this washing with only one cleanser and the result was extremely dry skin. I use Cerave Hydrating cleanser, which is the most gentle product possible. I imagine what consequences such a wash will have with the other cleansers.
The truth is that the most gentle cleansing product is good micellar water. ( like pink Garnier for Sensitive Skin, Bioderma Sensibio H2O ) And unlike any cleansing gel, with micellar water you know that even if you use only this product, it will remove all the sunscreen and dirt. Whereas if you only use cleansing gel, you can never be sure that everything is clean.
Dr Sam also point out that every wash, even with water alone, compromises the skin barrier and that morning cleansing washes away excess oil, but still recommend it for dry skin? Obviously, this is completely wrong. Dry skin does not have excess oil, it’s crucial actuality to maintain skin oil and definitely dry skin doesn’t need a morning cleansing, quite the opposite.

Love the Bioderma Sensibio H2O. It is very gently even on my rosacea prone skin. Vanicream gentle face cleanser has no fragrance and no actives. Works great on the most sensitive skins.

Cera Ve Hydrating cleanser is definitely not the most gentle product. I like it sometimes for morning cleanse, but it irritates my skin when i use retinoids, so I'd not suggest its the most gentle. For my dry skin, I use also only 1 product at night and contrary to Dr Sam its an oil cleanser, fragrance free Niod Cleansing Ester. I use it on dry skin, massage well for a minute or two, and remove with damp microfibre cloth thats gentle and takes absolutely all spf and makeup off. My skin always has a slight film of moisture after and is never dry. I also don't dry my skin with towel after, but will proceed immediately with Hada Labo premium HA lotion onto damp skin. And then my tret. Since i started using this cleanser about 10 years ago, I've not had irritation dryness or break-outs from cleansing. I'd never use miscellar water, but for those who do, its recommended to rinse this always off, not to leave surfectants on your skin. In the morning I use non-foaming gel cleanser because there is no make-up to remove.

I tried Cerave cleanser and it does not clean properly. One cleanser is not the same as the other. I like Bioderma sensibio gel cleanser, khiel's ( white bottle) gel cleanser, Paula's choice (resist) gel cleanser and also Dr Sam's gel cleanser. They clean properly and are not drying.

Just gently dry your face TOTALLY with a towel after cleansing so you can evaluate your cleanser. If your skin feels tight and dry and you need to apply moisturizer asap to fix it, it' s a NoNo. You may feel clean, fresh, no visible residue of night products or self oil but silky and comfortable (no redness or itchiness). It will guarantee the sucess of the following steps✨ A 90's skin torturer who almost became a reptile🤦🏻‍♀️ because The Internet didn' t exist and Dr Sam was still at the highschool😅 🧛🏻‍♀️🖤

Cleanse + Morning = Oximoron. Nobody wakes up with a dirty face😅. So what we really do in the morning is not technically cleansing (well, excluding our rheumish eyes, indeed) but removing any remaining product in order to have a perfect balanced canvas to receive the day routine. So, for dry people, foaming or some country' s water is😰🤕. For oily, is just about taking off the excess oil and/or any anti-acne strong product residue. 🧛🏻‍♀️🖤

      @sebumpostmortem 2 роки тому

@@analitycznie Yeeep, I perfectly know. All over our body😅. When I use the verb _clean_ I refer to use a detergent-ish product. Like in our genitalia, if someone had a shower right before going to bed, some luke warm water will be enough to make us feel clean without compromising the bacteria balance by using shower gel again. Rheum are another case. That' s what I meant with _cleansing_ 🤷🏻‍♀️
