The 80s were filled with many team based cartoons like the Thundercats & Silverhawks, that usually had interesting blended concepts (birds/cyborgs, cats/humans) It was the norm back then. They might have been funded for the purpose of making a profit selling toys but that didn't take away from how inventive they were for the time. I'm glad whatever corporate cynicism that went into their making never resonated in the minds of kids watching them then. It was just a great time to be a kid.
These days, when a show is relatively popular, you can release entire seasons on DVD. In the days of VHS, that wasn't economically feasible (bulky cartridges could only hold a couple hours and the raw material was pretty expensive), so shows would often sell tapes that only had one or two episodes. So my parents bought me a tape with a single episode of Silverhawks and I probably watched it a dozen times. It involved the Mob stealing a "disintegrator ray" that could destroy anything but gold, so they built a gold... I guess I'd call it a space jet ski, and Commander Stargazer flew it since he was made of gold and thus immune, while the others were made of silver. Then he flew it into space and fought the Mob until the disintegrator backfired and blew up their own ship. Also there was comic relief from a cabbie who was maybe a New York stereotype and kept saying "y'know what I mean?" And the ending clip was a quiz about meteors. Even at the time I could tell this was basically Thundercats in space (though I didn't know it was the same company), especially from Mon*Star's transformation sequence. Still, I liked it well enough, and I probably would have watched more but I don't think it aired in my location. Or maybe the show had already gone off the air by the time they were selling tapes.
Silverhawks was one of the dopest shows ever. Definitely had a top 5 theme song. This show was underappreciated. I had all the figures and vehicles. I even had a set of Quicksilver pajamas that was a costume of his character, complete with wings that were attached under the arms so that when you held your arms out to the side, you looked like a real Silverhawk. The best part for me was that I grew up in a family of cowboys and musicians (my dad and I both competed in rodeo professionally and my mom was a professional gospel singer for many years before she had kids) so getting to see a superhero that was both of those things was pretty awesome.

Lol
I loved this show as a kid. Thanks for the video.
Who could you guys see playing THE SILVER HAWKS in a live action movie?? I could see a slimmer Chris Evans as Quicksilver with Tally-Hawk and maybe Elizabeth Olson as Steelheart..... would Sam Jackson as Commander Stargazer, be one AVENGER too many??
Yeah, No.
I would love to see that but sadly enough i know we never will.
I'm just glad i was alive in the 80s to experience these great cartoons.
They need to bring back the Silver Hawks! That was my favorite cartoon as a kid. I now play it for my baby girl and she loves it!!!
