I grew up in Coconut Grove with Evinrudes on all my boats. When the FEDS raised the emission standards TOO HIGH, Eveinrude and Mercury did their best to meet the new standards but failed miserably. Evinrude went bankrupt and Mercury had to buy Boston Whaler to see there junk. Yamaha had experience with two stroke motor bikes and built two stroke outboards until they perfected four strokes. Mercury had Yamaha build theirs and painted them black. Kinda like cheating but still a smart move. The Verado was originally a piece of crap but they kept working on it and now it’s an excellent outboard and made in America!! I predict The new Mercury V8 will own the high end market. The French company, sorry, the name isn’t in my mind right now, bought Evinrude, completely redesigned it and it is probably the best outboard made BUT they dropped out of the outboard market. They probably have better ROI from other products. Some one will likely buy it but they have a skinny dealer network. They will have to spend millions ++ to reinsure dealers to carry the line.
