There are 2 bridges on that canal. The Rt 88 bridge and the Lovelandtown Bridge. The Lovelandtown Bridge has piers that are in the water and do get hit often by these boats.
I ran that canal several times a week. The weekend small boats were a pain. I would use my horn to signal what side I was going to overtake on. 99% had no clue. I would come up on the loud speaker and tell them to get out of the way.
@@MrChopsticktech Thanks for the comment. There are no wake signs, but NO no passing signs. No wake in the canal is a joke anyway. My boat required 3-5 kts on the rudders. The 5 ABSOLUTE rules for traversing the Point Canal from a Master Captain: 1) ONLY go thru the canal during slack tide. The window is an hour before or after dead high or low tide. 2) Trim your engines up if possible. 3) NO PASSENGERS forward of midship either in bow seating or foredeck. ESPECIALLY children. 4) DO NOT PASS vessel ahead of you 5) KEEP to the RIGHT side of the canal.
This “MASTER CAPTAIN” is questionable at best. The most important thing and one this captain didn’t say was put life jackets on the kids and the adults that you expect will go overboard to save any children that go overboard. If you are a captain you will be in the defense table in court and you will be asked why you didn’t do this and if you had, that child would still be here so captain don’t give us any “yes but” crap.
So I can only surmise that this is the first time you watched this particular channel. I point this out because 99.9% of weekend boaters on this channel don’t even put on life jackets, in fact when a boat does get into trouble you can witness the people looking for them they were never even told about the location of the jackets. I know to a lot of people I seem to be a hard ass and I don’t mean that. I’m 73 and when I was 12 is the first time in my life that I came very close to losing my life. I wasn’t on a boat I was swimming after a boat see I beached my boat and went to my friends house, by the time I got back my boat had drifted away from the beach. I thought I won’t have a problem swimming out to it. The one thing I didn’t consider was the wind see I felt know matter how hard I swam I couldn’t reach it. I would get so tired I had to float on my back before I could start again, I looked around for help but there wasn’t any. By the time I got to the boat it was 1/2 3/4 of a mile from shore. When I did catch it all I could do was huge the outboard motor for what seemed like an hour. If you go on a boat with kids they are dependent on you so don’t wait to get into trouble anticipate it and enjoy the water but you better respect it.@@MrChopsticktech
I remember when the NJ State Marine Police actually ENFORCED the “No Wake Zone” in the canal. Can’t do no wake in the canal. Boats need to keep their speed up. Especially the boats that need water over the rudders. Most of these people should just stay in the bay. Can’t even control their little boats zig zagging in front of large boats that can’t slow down. Too many inexperienced boaters thinking they are in the right
They don't enforce the no wake rule. The police and coast guard know you can't go that slow. You just can't go flying thru faster than everyone else. That they will ticket
You can absolutely maintain control or steering just by forward motion and without those ridiculous wakes as proven by what little power is required in docking a boat. Outboards and IOs have absolutely no excuse because their propeller thrust is steerable and I’ve even taken single screw inboards that actually have a rudder through with strong tidal currents with little wake as long as making way against the currant. Outgoing is even better because it’s a free ride that you can just run faster than the currant to maintain control and still not make a wake.
it is stunning as to how many of the guys driving really well set up boats have no idea what trimming up would do for the ride through the waves. All of the boats getting thrown around have the motor all the way down. You are not utilizing your boats design.
The canal should be closed and sealed off. Building it was the biggest environmental mistake. It created a massive intrusion of salt water into north Barnegat bay that was originally all fresh water. This was the largest factor in the bay's deterioration.
