  • This is my new series where we travel to different places and meet other crazy plant people, to get to know their plant journey, learn from and tour their houseplant collection.
    In this episode, we meet Bekka, Her Plant Stories. The number of times my mind was blown throughout this interview, lol. Just understanding her thought process and learning about how she cares for her houseplants. I walked away feeling inspired and motivated and I hope you do as well. Enjoy.

    Her selection and arrangement of plants in her Ikea cabinets are gorgeous. I love how simplistic, equipment-wise, her cabinets are - no fans, no humidifiers, etc. - and yet her plants still look great and very healthy.

    OMG she is amazing!!! I love that she is in Winnipeg cuz i am literally 2 hours away and get the same demonic weather and navigating that can be so tricky. For example, last winter I STRUGGLED to keep my humidity above 30% and ended up getting a humidifier with a humidistat and then i was able to keep it around 40% which still wasn't ideal but much better. Then this summer my natural humidity went from 30% to 70% and I really should have bought a dehumdifier bc it stayed that way up until this past week, and now its naturally at 50%. I set my humdifier up today just bc i am seeing the natural humidity trending down and my skin is feeling it so I know my plants are!! It is so interesting to hear someone say similar things to my own experiences though. Like all summer I barely needed to water my plants bc they were drinking from the air and now i am having to water a LOT more even though the humidity is still in what's considered a comfortable zone and my plants are still growing. Something that she didn't say she has an issue with but likely would have if she didnt have the cabinets is the warm/cold spots in the house come fall/winter. The chill definitely has impacted some of my plants. My one Maranta was doing great then one day it's leaves curled up and they started to die. I was so shocked bc I hadn't had any issues with it and then I realized that the spot it was in was very chilled (despite the thermometer saying it was warm) and the chill is usually from the damp air getting cold. Google said Marantas curl their leaves when they're too cold. So I have moved it closer to a space heater (the radiator style that keeps air consisitent not the blowy fan style) and I am hoping it will spring back to life for me, but had it been in a cabinet it wouldn't have got the "chilly" damp air. There is so much to look at in this climate bc 20 degrees can feel HOT on a humid summer day, or it can feel very chilly and have you wearing socks and long sleeves etc in the winter and the plants feel the same way we do!
    Christian, is there an inexpensive fertlizer you recommend? I am thinking of just grabbing miracle gro bc the Dyna grow is like 20 something for the 8 oz bottle and that doesn't go far for 100ish plants. My collection is like 80% alocasia and I use well water. My other plants are aroids and don't seem to be fussy. Thanks!!

    • @CrazyPlantGuy
      @CrazyPlantGuy  7 місяців тому

      haha Demonic weather they sure are, and it can be very tricky navigating through it. But its good that you're adjusting your care as you go through the season. Unfortunately most good fertilizer are expensive, I'm going to try the Growth Technology Foliage Focus for all my aroids. These are like $30 for 8.5 oz or 250 ml.... you do dilute them a bit so it can last pretty good. hope that helps.

    Love this long segment. By the she means insecticides, insecticidal soaps are fine. They are soaps and generally pests can’t develop resistance to soaps though it’s milder form of mitigation. So I try not to use pesticides as much unless it really calls for it.
