the most impressive part of this is that you filmed the intro "before" shot and then REMEMBERED 10 months later to film the "after" shot and still knew where the "before" footage was🤣
I believe these videos taken over several months are the most informative and valuable for people to really learn from. They answer most questions that new growers have when they get a new plant. They can see the process and progress through several months and any changes that need to be done for the plant to mature. Well done, Jan and Bradley!
I love that you included updates in one video. I appreciate all the work. The best part of having plants is watching them grow and you condensed all the joy in a short hour. Thank you so much, you're the best!
What a fabulous video. Really informative and encouraging. Thank you for putting the time and effort in to this. I can only dream about growing plants this well…
Really nice video as always ! Amazed by the long scale update of your videos and all the documentation filming you put into it, link to the process and tips, thanks for the content. Cheers !
I envy the fact you have never had mealys! I live in the southern states (Georgia specifically) and can literally open my front door in the spring/summer and see them freely flying around outside like ashes and all over my bushes/woods behind my house yearly like clockwork! 😬😩🫣😮💨 I also found out this is also why the praying mantis LOVE my woods to feed on the mealy bugs! I refuse to put my plants outside because of them but I would loveeeeee to! Lastly all of your informative content is always just as amazing as your plants are! 🪴☺️
My cats are terrible, they destroy every plant they have access to. All my plants have to live in the basement with grow lights because of the naughty cats. That's okay, I love both so...we do whatever is necessary.
PERFECT TIMING!! i just bought a verrucosum with thrips a few days ago!! it was 15€ at a random gardencenter that usually only sells super common plants. i picked the plant with the least visible thrips damage, but it had some larvae on the leaf undersides which i rinsed off and then treated with insecticide spray. maybe i will add systemic treatment to it as well. it had 4 different plants in the pot, 2 really small ones and 2 medium sized ones. the bigger plants are already on a sphagnum mosspole right now :) the plants have been separated into two pots (one for the bigger and one for the smaller ones) and repotted into better substrate. i think i will add the smaller ones to the pole in a few months when i size up the pot and they are big enough for me to find a point where they can attach. the roots looked pretty underwhelming on them so its good to know that its normal for them to look so meh. thanks to your advice i will be paying extra attention to keeping the mosspole moist and i will move my humidifier closer to it as well
I really like these updates. Viewers rarely appreciate that much work. Thanks for this, I only can imagine how long it takes and all the planning, cutting, etc. Grüße aus Hamburg 🙂
What a tremendously helpful video, well timed for me as a Vera that I purchased over a month ago from Indonesia has finally arrived and needs some rehabbing. Thank you Jan!
Another fantastic video! Although I have a green thumb, I only dared to try mosspoles after I found your channel. Greatly explained - from your own huge experience, and not just parroted like many people do on UA-cam. Thanks for all the mistakes you save me! ☺
Wow! What a good one. So enjoyed this! Thank you for the quality content. I just tried a new mixture of moss and tree fern fiber in two poles. So far I like it! The moss holds the fiber in place and the fiber keeps it moist longer. For spider mites treatment I fill a spray bottle about 20% of the way with alcohol, add a good squirt of dish soap, then fill up the rest of the way with warm water and shake to dissolve the soap. I spray it on and often leave it on the plant after it dries because I read that the soap creates a barrier the mites don’t like. Ive also used it as a preventative on my more susceptible plants heading into winter. I’ve heard others say they like to use peppermint or tea tree Castile soap instead of dish soap because it is more gentle and the oils are also longer term pest deterrents if left on. Heads up that depending on the plant sometimes the mixture is a bit hard on new growth. Sorry this ended up so long! Best to you and Brad!
After I gave up on my verrucosum following the nth spider mite infestation, it's good to hear that it's the norm! I'm trying a verru x fibrosum hybrid and am waiting to see if it grows up to fill the same niche
🤩OMG I dream to grow mines so fast like you do . I bought a verrucosum online on October 2023 and it only has given me one beautiful leave . I want to think it's because of the winter 😅. Hoping that when springs comes I can see my beauty V gets more lush . Love your content ! Greetings from Sevilla , Spain !!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Always happy if there is a new video from you :D I often recommend your videos because you always give a reason for your doing and you do proper test before you give your feedback, I really appreciate that. mealy bugs die when they have contact with alcohol. And if you cut up the plant anyway, I would have just filled a tub with water, soap and some rubbing alcohol (DIY insecticidal soap) and submerged the cutting in it for a few minutes. I sometimes take pests as an opportunity to cut up a plant and then I do that. roots I wash off with clean water afterwards, the rest I just let drip off and dry. If it´s a more resistant pest like thrips I root the cuttings in water (I like that anyway) and this way I can wash them off super easy if I feel the need to.
Have you considered using Beneficial Nematodes and or preditory mites to take care of your pests? It was a game changer for me and now everything I grow is in "living soil". Nematodes improve the soil health and devour any pests in the soil... fairly quickly.. and permanently. The beneficial mites are also great for pests. I'd bet that'd take care of your spider mites.
I just a small el choco today in the mail watched you're video so impressive I'm gonna do everything u did minus the idea cabinet cuz don't have 1. wish me luck & youre the best buddy.

Lasted a month with tree fern fiber in my vericosum pole before the mess drove me to switch back to moss. Now it looks like I need to up my game in the conditions department as my vericosum has definitely not reached nearly the potential in the same amount of time as you've shown here. Superb video, so inspired!😻
I hit most pests with isopropryl alcohol if I really have to. (Which you can buy in woolies and coles in convenient spray bottles in the medication section). Like you I will just rinse plants regularly under the hose. I also have a steady army of lady bugs in my garden and sun room. I think they do the bulk of the job as I always have some pests but never in pandemic proportions. I view them as lady bug attractors so don't want to treat them with toxins ever. Every bug seems to have a purpose. I watched in great awe as a few lady bugs completely cleared my ancient giant rose bush of aphids in just a couple of days a few weeks back. Nature is amazingly equipped to deal with it's own issues (except humans, we are the biggest pests). That was some tangent, but anyway I do recommend rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol to squirt the odd infestations as a long time gardener and a nurse. Quick drying, sterile, no oil (so won't risk foilage burn) and can be used on self for small wounds inflicted by plants or cats. Can also be sprayed on your gardening tools if you are concerned about cross infection risks.
Hi Jan, I actually paused the video to search for vitality plus before you said it was discontinued, and 2 stockists showed up, one in vic and one in perth. I didnt like the postage, so I'll be watching closely to see what replacement product you endorse (no pressure). This vid was perfect timing as I'm readying to chop my verru that i got from coles last november. $17, mid size and in ceramic! Couldn't believe my luck 😊
I’m not a fan of using pesticides myself, and manage the occasional findings with either pulsing water, peroxide spray on plants and roots, or alcohol on the plant...with a bit of extra attention. That seems to work well for me. 😁
I’ve seen a few people recommend rubbing alcohol, but it doesn’t actually work - I watched someone on UA-cam showing how they eventually come back to life 😂 you need denatured alcohol like methylated spirits, 1 part alcohol 3 parts water.
Instead of wire, try hairpins. Not the regular ones that are super tight, but the ones that are open by default. They're a V shape, which is perfect for deeply pushing it into the fern and there's a groove for the stem. Sometimes I widen the groove by rolling a hard chopstick inside of it. They are dirt cheap, I get mine from farmers. I also grow verrucosum in fern, I have zero issues with it attaching like this.
Good tip ... never owned a hair pin in my life & the wire is what my moss pole mesh came wrapped in so it's free :P but next time I'm at a dollar store, I'll have a look for some pins hehe :)
@@sydneyplantguy You need a Begonia Caravan, if I could put a picture of it's beautiful massive red back Velvet leaves I would.. I can send a smaller one to AJ? for you, mine has 18 +" leaves beautiful plant & massive now 🥰😁
That was really, really interesting Jan. it’s looking so beautiful. Could you chop back a longer plant stem so the lower ones can catch up or would that ruin it? I have been sprinkling diatomaceous earth around the top of the pot on the substrate because I’m sure the wee bugs like to crawl on there too & so far I have been super impressed with the results especially with my hoyas that are mealy bug magnets & I haven’t had a spider mite problem so far this year. The systemic spray I have used when I’ve had a real concern is Groventive Garden, I’m sure you must have it in Australia. It is really, really good. Honestly I don’t think I have ever seen a cat like Brad, he has the most amazing personality I have ever seen 🤫 don’t tell my Zena I said that. He is super special 🥰 Hope your Mum is having a wonderful time 👍
I love your channel! Very informative and definitely reignited my passion for plants! 🌱 are you able to please do a video on your philodendron ring of fire? I have one on its way, and would love to know more on them ☺️

Such an inspiring video! I’ve only really heard of tree fern being used for anthuriums, this is great to know that verrus love it also! I will def give it a try. Thoroughly enjoyed this video and the real star Brad😂😂.
Thank you for this video! I’m currently struggling with my verrucosum. This has been very helpful. I thought I was doing something wrong resulting in a weak root system. Also, I attempted to propagate in water, which was a failure. I still have plenty of plant to work with and will start over with propagations in moss.
Great video! Out of all my collection, my vericosum is the only one doing poorly, yet it’s in the same conditions as my other moss poles, under grow lights 😢
Wow the dedication to filming this 😂❤ You must be really having a planning schedule reminder for all the plants and being on top of the game It must be tough to plan each day with what to do with which plant.😂😂 Anyways nice to see our little chief inspector doing his duties well❤ Must do a monstaria update on one of the plants
Great rescue and video, Jan! However, a more user and planet friendly solution for the mealy bugs, might be a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution in a spray bottle. (It is readily available in most drug or big box stores around the world and is rather inexpensive. As always, your subscribers should use precaution and wear gloves, a face mask and protective goggles or protective eyewear, when they are spraying their plants for mealybugs with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution. Most important, spray your plant/plants outdoors or in a very well ventilated area and let them dry out outside or in a well ventilated area - that is away from living and sleeping quarters. Last but not least, your subscribers, should always keep their 70% isopropyl alcohol solution and their filled spray bottle, safely up and away from children.) I learned this from a very experienced plantsman and nursery owner on UA-cam. I was shocked as to how well it worked!
There's nothing I specifically do for her so not really anything I got to say about her. She's just in my greenhouse... growing steadily but nothing impressive. But planning to make a general Alocasia video eventually :)
Great video as always Jan, I was wondering, now that you have had outdoor spaces in two of your homes, have you had a problem with the green caterpillars. I live in a high rise and apartment and apart from the occasional mealy bug which I bring home on a new plant, thankfully don’t have many problems with pests. But, those pesky green caterpillars can decimate a plant in a day or two, eating all the new growth. They have even started in on some of my philos and pothos. So annoying and seem to be worse with this strange summer weather are having in Sydney. Have you found that and if so, what do you do to thwart them?
"it grew too large" Sydney Plant Guy problems 😅 I get what you mean though bc some plants just look so interesting while sizing up and lose some of those qualities over time
the most impressive part of this is that you filmed the intro "before" shot and then REMEMBERED 10 months later to film the "after" shot and still knew where the "before" footage was🤣
Hehe thanks !!! It’s definitely a lot more work to film over such a period of time but think it creates a more rewarding viewer experience :)

Verrucosum is my favorite plant! It grows well for me for some reason, better than most of my plants. Probably because I am an overwaterer.

Brad is keeping the schedule for me hehe :) thanks !
That's the last plant on my wish list. I don't have desire for more. Once I put my hands on this one I probably won't buy a plant any time soon.
mmm good luck :P haha
Tack!
Thank you :) Appreciate it !
Amazing! Would love to talk with you about moss pole designs one day!
Lots of ways to design a moss pole :) as long as it can hold growing medium it’ll work :)
I'm on a similar mission 🎉🎉🎉
Great suggestion :)
Kill-a-mite or any treatment with ‘abamectin’ as the active ingredient works brilliantly against spider mites
Thanks :)
Great video
Thanks :)
I purchased one of those beautiful plant and it would not stop getting spidermites! Help!
Can you do a video specifically on your alocascia dragon scale? It’s the alocascia I struggle the most with!
There's nothing I specifically do for her so not really anything I got to say about her. She's just in my greenhouse... growing steadily but nothing impressive. But planning to make a general Alocasia video eventually :)
Great video as always Jan,
I was wondering, now that you have had outdoor spaces in two of your homes, have you had a problem with the green caterpillars.
I need a verrucosum! As always, I learn so much from you. I love the syngonium plants near the Manjula. What kind of syngoniums are in there?
Thanks :) it’s a mojito :)
Very informative indeed 💚
I really like your 🪴 parenting style 😊👌
It's giving me great tools on my helicopter parenting 😂

Sydney Plant Guy problems 😅
I get what you mean though bc some plants just look so interesting while sizing up and lose some of those qualities over time
Yeah and they can be a pain to manage indoors!! Easy of care is definitely a big factor to consider these days :)
