      I've been into plants for 3 years. I always buy long or established plants. I say this because people even big stores as well. They will have plants that look really nice just bc they trim clippings and they just put then in pots without proper rotting or them being properly propagated which in a couple of days might rot because of over watering. I always purchase my plants from small businesses bc they actually love and care for their plants. Best wishes to you and you're plants 🙂

      I bought a baby one that started off as 3 single little cuttings in a 6cm pot and was about 15cm long. She's now in a 9cm pot and has shot out 2 new vines on the top and grown to about 25cm in 6 weeks and she's 3 meters away from a north facing window on a shelf so gets not much light apart from first thing in the morning and she's growing well for me.

    I have a variegated string of hearts that I had under it's own grow light (a knockoff aerogarden with just the lights going, SOH in a small pot just set on the top surface) and it FLOURISHED. Nodes were super close together, leaves were getting fairly large and full, absolutely stunning pink colors coming through. A few months later I put the aerogarden thing away and moved it to my plant cabinet, and all the new growth since has been anemic and leggy. I'm going to chop and prop the new growth and put it back under a bright grow light. These little guys can handle much much more light than most of my other houseplants and even seem to thrive in it.

    I find that the lighting is crucial to growth of the leaves combined with watering, BUT to stimulate the plant to build “Tubers” or new strands I mist My Baby. It keeps the leaves moist but most noticeably it activates the nods with moisture and that with the light brings new growth. Also if You have a “Bald head with Dreadlocks” plant, mist the leaves and stems and that will encourage the nodes to grow. The “Tubers” then cascade down making the plant fuller. Also I have had success simply sticking the stem with the node in the moist soil. After a while, 2-3 weeks the roots are formed and starts growing. As long as You keep the essentials, She will grow. Your Baby is beautiful. That plants are Living Beings I’ve given most of Mines names. Each has a different story and Character. I’ve named My Baby RAPUNZEL. Thanks for the video and info. ✌🏿

    I got mine last year and it was doing soooo good. I was using a grow light bc my house is basically a dungeon 🙄 I was being super careful not to over water her and like I said she was doing great.. until.. like two months ago I made the terrible decision to repot, she obvi didn’t like that bc soon after she croaked. I was able to save about 10 strands and am currently trying to root them up.

    • @CrazyPlantGuy
      @CrazyPlantGuy  3 роки тому +10

      Oh no. I’m confident that String of Hearts doesn’t need to be repotted if they’re doing well and growing healthy. They like to be more root bound since their roots are also shallow and more threadlike. Good thing you were able to save some strings. 🤞🏼

    In my experience, this is one of the easiest houseplants out there. I’ve had one for over twenty years. It’s moved with me several times, been cut back completely more times than I can remember - I have no patience for de-tangling, and they grow so fast anyway. I had it in a shallow clay pot, in a room with a skylight, and let it dry out completely between waterings. Sometimes I move it outside for the summer. Mostly I ignore it.
    Since they became trendy and are now ridiculously expensive, I divided mine to share with 2 other people. It was time for a repotting anyway. All three of the “new” plants are doing great. I also started some leaf and stem cuttings as an experiment. No way in hell am I paying $20 for a stem cutting of this plant, that is just ridiculous. You used to be able to buy a 10” hanging basket full at Lowe’s for less than that.

    • @dobaleedo
      @dobaleedo 2 роки тому +2

      It always fascinates me how something like house plants can go in and out of style. I took my 4 year old daughter to the garden center to try and shake some winter blues today and she wanted one so bad. The fuller 6in string of hearts was $40. I was floored. So I compromised and got her the $8.99 2in pot that had 3 strings in it 😂 I figured we can use it as a teaching experience on how to propogate and how to be patient.

    • @geslinam9703
      @geslinam9703 2 роки тому

      @@dobaleedo don’t worry, they grow very quickly. Put it in a bright spot, hopefully where it will get light directly to the top of the plant. For the winter months, I put a plant light bulb in the fixture over my kitchen sink, and have mine hanging there under it, where the light shines on the tops of the plants. If it only gets light on the side hanging pieces, the leaves will die off at the top and the plant won’t be as attractive…..and always under water. Don’t wait until it’s bone dry, especially with a young plant, but don’t water until it feels dry. This will require checking frequently, but that is important with plants. You have to love and care enough about them to check them frequently, every couple days. I’m trying to teach my niece this right now. When it feels dry and the pot gets a very light weight feeling, time to water, and do so sparingly. More plants die from over than under watering, especially succulents. Putting the plant in a bright indirect spot outside in the summer always makes them happy too! I hope your daughter enjoys her little plant, and that it grows well for her.
      I didn’t have much luck with stem cuttings. I think with this plant, you need mature cuttings that are growing little tubers along the stems.

    Last year I found some individual leaves on the floor of the garden centre and I thought I'll stick them on some moss with some other props and see what happens. Other props rooted and we're moved, little leaves were alive and doing nothing, until I pulled one and felt resistance. It's been about a year!, but all 3 leaves have formed their own tuber. So yes, this isn't for the impatient, but even individual leaves, with no node and only half an inch of stalk may give you a new plant. Plus if you were going to throw them away anyway, you've lost nothing. Also, because it was so long , I did forget about them, so at times they went weeks with no water. Such a tough little plant

    Hello Christian, I don't have a string of hearts yet! I want to share something with you. I recently repotted a neighbor's plant, within 10 days I had an infestation of......you guessed it, fungus gnats. I thought to myself.........how is this happening. I told myself, there must be eggs in my soil?! I put approximately 4 cups of soil into a plastic bag and tied a knot. I brought the knotted bag into my house, to keep a close eye on it. Sure enough, a little over a week.....that plastic bag had about 35 fungus gnats. Just wanted to share my finding with you. I know that a lot of us are getting ready to put our plants in bigger pots. You might want to see if your soil is gnat free. P.S. No, my soil is not old or moist. 😊

I am hoping that it is gnat free. I have only tried it on one of my plants so far. Seriously, I never thought that I would order soil! I learned that soil should not be on pallets outside, like all of the big box store. I was told that the moisture attracts the gnats to the bags and that is how they get into the bags?!

    I have my string of hearts in a southeast window, about a foot away. It has grown 8ish inches in the last two months and has a dozen flowers already!

      That’s awesome. Glad to read yours is growing and thriving. I would think south east is the best sun exposure you can get for plants. 😁

    Your sting of hearts is beautiful 🥰
    I wish I knew how to add a pic or vid.
    I'm in Western Australia Perth.
    I have taken to the propergation(?) method of allowing the mother plant grow into another pot, placed under it. I have had much success with this. I would love for you see my verigated string/s of hearts. I grow all of mine outside, even thought it's freezing here atm! 🥶
    The biggest problem I get with my string of hearts (& some of my other succulants) is mealy bug! I HATE these things! I think of them as 'plant nits' (head lice 🤢) they really Grose me out!
    So from time to time I get my cotten tip out & my isopropyl alcohol & dab that around. It is a bit of an ongoing issue, especially in winter.
    Happy growing ☘

    Great video, thanks very much for sharing. I love my string of hearts and am always trying to improve my care for it. Thanks for the tips . Do you know why sometimes the lawer leaves be one smaller? Is it water issue or light?

    This Plant, known to me only as Rosary Bead was one of my first, given to me over 50 yrs ago . The lady had a huge lush (outside) patio garden area, so mine was an outdoor plant .I didn't see them again for years, but my next one also stayed really hearty on an outside window ledge protected by other bushes having morning to mid day light ( mid Calif. Coastal) leaves grew thick and vines really long...and now I just found an established one outside a grocery store, I bought. I don't have the best indoor light, so I plan to put outside for light daytimes, keep inside overnight. I will keep water light...and let you know .
    Also how are you with the Purple Velvet Plant?( vine) I've had One that was full and amazing at either extreme out in cold or inside by wood stove heat. But any later ones I tried didn't last long. Very touchy plant .Any advice on those? Thanks

    Christian ... thank you for this ... so informative and filled with tips for success as well as subtle insertion of humour here and there ... do you even realize the effect you’ve had on string of hearts sales ? I mean this plant is the envy of all in the plant community... I have a baby and he is so wee and sparse ... he and I sat and watched this vid and he wants to grow like your guy and play in the NBA one day ;) cheers - stay safe and green my friend :)

    I really love the format of these videos. So informative and fun and 🙈 I may now be on the hunt for a ceropegia.
    I also have a suggestion for a spinoff of this theme: If this were my plant. For example, I've got a relatively young monstera adansonii that's got a good start but is only one vine... If it were your plant, how would you proceed to grow, and maybe propagate it, to help it reach it's full potential?

    I have north facing windows only. It’s tragic! Should I just cut my losses and give my SOH to a friend with that good light? I supplement many of my plants already with grow lights, so I could try that if it would help, but I just love this plant so much I can’t do nothing and watch it suffer if that’s what’s going to happen in my dungeon
