Also i want to point out to you that after a few live tv performances were deemed to be vulgar and indecent for the time, Elvis was told to tone it down and they began filming him from above the waist only. Thats how strict it was back then, and why Elvis seemed reserved and calmer in this one.

This was on the Ed Sullivan Show which he appeared several times. This particular one as you saw he was shown from the waste up because of his "wiggling" watch more from This time period.. He had so much talent and love for his fans.. I don't remember a time when I wasn't an Elvis fan.. Also from his movie King Creole which was filmed on Location in New Orleans before he did his time in the Army, look up Crawfish and Trouble. Thanks from all us Elvis fans for helping to keep his legacy going.

  • @stevepomeroy-rockin-pa-realtor

On this one he was already in trouble and threats to arrest him and even death threats were everywhere. Host Ed Sullivan (the most important TV host of the century and ever) gave Elvis the ultimate break but nationwide anger was penetrating even this show. Sullivan said he had to chill out the dance moves and he did until the end. But the cast was set. Elvis was a huge hit on every Ed Sullivan show appearance. Add in Hound Dog and even a Christian gospel number and Elvis was the most popular singer in US history just like that. Ed Sullivan was more powerful than even todays internet as some 80% of US homes watched that show. That’s insane power.

The censorship at that time was very strict; therefore, Elvis could not move like he wanted to. He was prohibited to move below the waist. If you notice, this video is above the waist (to ensure) that Elvis would adhere to the restrictions. He still managed to inject his personality into the performance. Things were different then. This is way before my to time, but I know that in my time there were remnants of that era. Elvis was instrumental in changing things, in his time. He was a trailblazer. New artists owe a debt to Elvis.

Elvis was my mother's time so I grew up loving him because of her, but I'm happy to see how you understand his humor, changes of tempo, tone, dance moves and the way he interacted with the audience. You should have done Hound Dog on the Milton Berle show first.
That is his first national TV appearance and the one that almost got him barred from tv for his "vulgar" performance lol
You notice this one is only filmed from the waist up, that is why.
It came after Hound Dog on Milton Berle.
So, it's unfortunate you can't see his moves in this one.

There’s the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s Elvis. So many unique songs and ways of singing as he matured. If you haven’t done Bridge Over Troubled Water live 1070, it’s phenomenal & though I e heard it covered by many people, once you’ve heard Elvis sing a song, it usually becomes your favorite. Just wanted to say that Elvis appeared 6 times on the Dorsey Bros stage show from Jan 1956-March 1956, then twice in June on The Milton Berle show, once on Steve Allen’s show and on Ed Sullivan in Sept. and Oct 56. He sang several songs on each of these performances. I think on the Jan. 57 show he sang 4 or 5 songs. My favorite is his Oct 56 performance of Hound Dog on the Ed Sullivan show, because he was such a tease, and showed his sense of humor while driving the females nuts.

  • @anastasia10017

Elvis was revolutionary because he used to move on stage. Elvis could dance and swing his ass. Elvis was the first singer you needed to watch sing. All the others before him just stood still and sang their song. Elvis had the moves and he moved. People thought he was vulgar, indecent and too sexy. Elvis moving on stage was a huge scandal and very very controversial. Parents didnt want their daughters to see Elvis. TV networks censored him and would only show him from the waist up in case he swung his hips. In Florida, the police chief came to elvis before his show and told him he would be arrested and thrown in jail if he moved even a finger on stage. So Elvis did his show on stage, didnt move, and held up his hand and moved his little finger to the beat.

Fantastic reaction. This is so fun. I think there's one from the same show where he does hound dog and while it was the Milton Berle show a few months earlier which is also on UA-cam in black and white, that's the one where he slowed it down to half time without even giving his band any notice and just made everybody go crazy, that resulted in them largely not letting him show his dance moves a few months later when he started appearing on The Ed Sullivan show, as in this performance. But still his hound dog on this is great because you get to hear him come out on stage and he's got about 30 seconds of audience interaction before they started and then about the same afterwards and it just gives you a great insight into his stage persona as well as really, his character.

Ed Sullivan (the show's host) was a real one. He was from Harlem and grew up during the Harlem Renaissance surrounded by Black excellence. He had a lot of Black performers on his show compared to other 40s, 50s, and 60s variety shows. And he also had rock 'n roll on his show, which a lot of people weren't down with because it was considered to be part of Black culture, which a lot of people hated.

Please remember this is when TV and any live shows he was doing were highly censored, they repeatedly warned him not to move like he normally does or they wouldn't have him on their shows. Everybody has already posted that on his first Ed Sullivan show, he made his moves and all hell broke loose. Adults across country went berserk. Banned him from show. Too many fans protested, so Sullivan agreed to another appearance but only show from waist up. Everything going o.k. but Elvis acted like he was in chains, restrained. You caught it immediately near end by his curled lip, his head was down so you couldn't see his eyes dancing, smirking grin, background singers breaking up laughing, cause it was coming. That's when he let it go and was Elvis again. Then, he just walked off stage, didn't say anything to Sullivan. I remember watching it in 1957. He didn't let us down. 😅😊😊

In this particular TV performance It was intentional that they film him from the waist up.

The older folks couldn’t stand him and I’m only 23 and I’ve Read everything I can on Elvis and when they wouldn’t let him dance it really hurt him he didn’t feel like he was doing anything wrong

From the release of " Heartbreak Hotel " in 1956, Elvis was top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 56 out of the next 104 weeks ... In the UK, he's had 21 No.1 hits in our charts with an astounding 76 that made the top 10 ! I sometimes think that Americans don't always appreciate the global influence this man had ...

Great reaction. 😎 Censored from the waist down, thus the hand movements. For more young Elvis I recommend Hound Dog of June 5, 1956 on The Milton Berle Show (live version). Also, If I may, Ready Teddy on the Ed Sullivan Show is also a great performance.

This was on my birthday even though I wasn't Born until 71. This was also two days before Elvis Presley's birthday January 8th.

You should really react to "Hound dog", but it has tobe the one from the Milton Bearle show. It was that performance that showed on TV how Elvis performed on stage , and the establishment went crazy, priest called him the devil, radiostations banned his music, and commities went aroun at jukebox joints to make sure there were No Elvis records. Also make sure it is the unredacted version from the Milton Bearle show .
