Martin Sheen on Elvis: "Nobody knew how to deal with him."

  • A very interesting interview with Martin Sheen talking about Elvis. Mr Sheen seems to be a real Elvis expert. He says and remembers a lot of things that aren't necessarily known by the general public. Like the fact that Elvis wanted to be an actor in the first place - not a singer.
Please excuse that as the interview progresses picture and sound get more and more asynchronous. Still a watchable video, I guess.

I know. I was a child when he died, and I remember watching on TV his last concert. I live in the northern Europe so we were not quite up to date with the cultural phenomenon. I remember being very sad, though I must not have understood. I remember listening to his beautiful spirit through his beautiful singing. Yes, along his daughter´s sudden and early death, it activated deep sadness about Elvis. When we die, all the beautiful things we experienced, are soon forgotten. I think there is no one as wonderful as Elvis.

He nailed it,I was a 17 yr old brother when Elvis died.I remember watching his movies on tv. And I agree with many of his statements. He broke down women the way know make entertainer has ever did. He expose how powerful and man can be on a women. And it was all around the world. A few months ago I read a biography that his step brother had written. It was super detailed and profound. What Elvis never overcame was the death of his mom when he was in the military. That being away from home and his greatest supporter was gone.

Martin Sheen definitely could put Elvis in context vis a vis the "rock 'n' roll movies" that were SO bad, but like MTV for the 50's generation. The "Colonel" held Elvis back artistically, and that is the great tragedy of his life. He could have worked more closely with Lieber & Stoller and taken drama classes to act with the greats. It makes me sad to think what could have been instead of "Tom Parker"'s performer. Anyway, Martin Sheen lived the era, and remembers.

+singers333 He always gives good interviews. He's a man of good Christian faith. He knows and appreciates how lucky he is. He filmed a movie in my hometown in the 80s and I was too young to visit the filming sites, but he remained friends with the man who wrote the movie who eventually became a friend of mine and I was lucky to have dinner with him and his wife Jan and they really went out of their way to be very kind and warm. They loved our town and he visited many times. He has that great, warm laugh. When I had dinner with him ( And like 14 other people ) the only connection I really had with him besides his iconic films where his sons. To me back then, Sheen was an old dude and while I knew a few of his films, I didn't realize the caliber of an actor he was and why so many esteemed directors worked with him. So we talked about his sons who we knew a lot better from more current films. He was very proud of his kids and recently when Charlie came out with HIV, my thoughts went to Mr. Sheen and his wife more so than Charlie. Never acted entitled. Gave everyone who approached him ( A ton ) a sincere moment of his time and all night, you'd just hear that laugh. I recently found a movie a film of his online called "The Way." An independent directed by Emilio. Brilliant film. Got absolutely no publicity and was seen very little. If you enjoy him, you should see if you can dig it up. You won't be disappointed. Blerg! Sorry for the manifesto.

I am not convinced that Elvis could have been an excellent actor--but he did have great presence, due to his great looks and singing...IMO, his best movie was "Viva Las Vegas", with the stunning Ann-Margret...they had tremendous sexual chemistry, and it is likely they were getting it on during the production of that movie!...Ann of course, is ambivalent and demure when she talks about the relationship...but my God...those two hardly ever take their eyes off of each other during that movie!

This isn't a man who just liked "Elvis" (trademark). This is someone who actually cared about the massive missed opportunities. "Elvis" (trademark) was massively more talented than we remotely understand - and we can now only imagine the directions he could have taken. Elvis was a singularity, and he will never be equaled. A very insightful, and contemplative interview. Whatever your views on parker - he saw a cash machine, and wasn't remotely interested in Elvis' development. If you admire him, remember - parker was a huxter, a chancer, a carnival conman who, by chance and tragic fortune, stumbled upon El Dorado - and wanted to keep every last nugget to his greedy self.

    This is peak interviewing.
I even question whether it should be called an interview (though it is since there's an asking of questions). It's not even much of a conversation between two people yet it's conversational. It's marvelous storytelling of one's experiences and opinions. When people are asked about what they love or who they admire and asked to expand on it, magic happens. And celebrities, especially, have such unique experiences and takes on things but nowadays are seldom asked anything beyond "Did you read the book?," "What did you eat? Chicken everyday? Wow," or "Did you like working with so and so?"
Here, Martin Sheen talks about someone he never met, yet greatly admires while talking about himself and his own childhood. It gives you insight into Elvis AND Martin. And the interviewer lets the questions breathe so Martin Sheen can speak clearly. I can imagine Sheen as a teen, styling his hair like James Dean, popping off to the drive-in, listening to the jukebox. Sometimes, younger people feel removed from the past, it's only really seen through tv or movies or history books.
Little things like landlines or iceboxes, become foreign in young ears, which is fine. That's what happens but people were still people, and hearing about it from the person who experienced it, that's special. It makes it more real, especially if it's in person because to see them and hear their life story is to see the progression of a life.
For instance, it's mind boggling at times to think that my grandma, born in 1924, lived through the Depression, WWII, Cold War, Korean War, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, numerous presidents (Coolidge was pres when she was born, JFK's assasination), the pandemic, tvs to computers to smartphones, Civil Rights Movement, the list goes on.
You take someone from the year 1944 and place them in the modern world, they'd be astounded because they have seen the gradual progression of the world, yet for those who live long enough they're sort of like time travelers too, we all are, we see the world change, for better or for worse and we hope our experiences have an impact. Even if it's just through a declaration of love and admiration for Elvis Presley.
    I'll shut it now.
