    I love how the first appartment could have been completely renovated with just 300-500€ and increase the rent by 50€, but the landlord was probably like "hell no, who cares". It could have looked like the third appartment at least from the design etc.

      If even that much. Just tack some shower board panels over the banged up walls.

      @@ShootBigBucks I don't know the law in japan but usually you are allowed to change the appartment to some extend, as long as you can deliver it back in it's original state. I think, if you do it yourself and improve the quality of the appartment, the landlord cannot charge the tenant with increased rent. If he does i can imagine that you can charge him for the work you have done in his appartment, which would yet again lead to him telling the police that he never told you to improve his appartment.
      Overall, in a realistic scenario, if you better his appartment for free because you want to live there increasing your quality of life, he won't charge you with higher rent maybe even give you a little bonus like lowering it for a few months or even giving you free months for a while as a thank you gift. After you move he will be able to charge more afterall.

    The first two apartments were really old school, but the second one was WAY nicer than the first for only $25 a month more. The third apartment was clean and modern. While more than twice as expensive, it was certainly worth it. It was actually an apartment, while the first two were basically sleeping rooms. I’ve watched your videos for a while, but just found this one. I think most people are very interested in what’s available and would like to see you work your way thru the price ranges to compare!

      The first one was in *rough* shape, but literally nothing that some minor repairs and improvements the tenant could make themselves couldn't fix for a very small amount of money if they're handy. I'd take it over the 2nd one solely because someone is clearly cleaning the toilet. Judging by the apparent lack of care from the landlord it's probably just one of the tenants cleaning it but even still it's at least getting done. I wouldn't want to move into the 2nd one and end up being the only person who cleans the toilet for everyone.

    • @S1576
      @S1576 2 роки тому +6

      @@JeremyLevi I agree, at least in the first one someone gave a shit (pun intended) to clean the toilet whereas the 2nd one looked like the toilets from a dingy night club. Although it could be said the 2nd location could be home to more residents.
      Either way, dirty toilets are a huge bug bear of mine, would probably put up with the higher cost to have an own toilet

    • @JeremyLevi
      @JeremyLevi 2 роки тому

      @@S1576 I mean where I live I wouldn't go for a communal toilet simply because here we have strong tenant rights if you rent an apartment but they are all null and void if you share a kitchen OR bathroom as that's classified as renting a room, not an apartment here. No clue how much of a thing tenant rights are in Japan though so it might not make as much of a difference there.

    One thing I find attractive about Japanese housing is how many options there are for single people who want to live alone. In America it's nearly impossible to find a studio apartment, most apartments are 1, 2 or 3 bedroom. So if you're single you have to rent a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment and share it with 1-2 roommates. I'd much rather just be able to rent a 1-room studio all to myself.

    I actually loved the first traditional apartment. I don't know how it works in Japan, but if you're allowed to make improvements I would make it look nice. And be grateful for the opportunity to live in Japan. I've lived without indoor water and with a outhouse in the past and you figure it out and get used to it. Get a gym card or find a onsen. Wood polish, lime, new tatamis, a couple floor chairs and a table, a fresh futon and a couple of wok burners is a fairly easy start. A few house plants.... It's a pretty sweet start. And $200 per month leaves more money to fully explore the rest of Japan.

    That last apartment was nice! I'm a fan of small spaces for living, so that would literally be perfect for me. Odds are I would use the loft as a storage space if I wanted a standard mattress bed. But if I was trying to conserve the downstairs space as kind of a living room, then a japanese futon with a memory foam sleeping pad would do the job too since they don't add a lot of height.

    I know everyone loves the third apartment. But the first and second one have a charm to them: yes they're old and falling apart, but immerse yourself in the space and in the time period it was built for a bit. It was a different way of life. Things were simpler, life was slower. Life was always more and more beautifully complex as before mainstream technology, everyone lived within their own world. It's something that although will not best suit modern day, should still be appreciated and cherished as memorabilia for such a special time period.

      RIGHT!
