  • Micro ATX motherboard for my AMD Ryzen video editing computer.
    All in all it looks like an awesome motherboard. I can't wait until I have all my other components and can get this baby up and running! I hope this will make me enjoy video editing a little more! Editing videos on my laptop just sucks because everything you do lags a few seconds. The preview playback is ok on lowest quality setting, scrubbing through content is garbage, rendering times are supper long. My laptop did fine until I got my new camera that does 50Mb/s bit rate. Files get huge fast. This video alone is 23GB of raw video files. 4.7GB edited down. I can't wait, this thing is going to be the boss!

    You would be better off powering up your motherboard on the wooden table than the bag. The best way to test is to screw in the brass stand-offs and then power up the board on a wooden table. This protects the back of the board from any possible shorts and damage to surface mount components and the solder joints of the through hole components.
    Not all static bags are as forgiving as the black anti-static ones. Some, like the silvered bags are conductive. It's best not to get into the habit of using any bag.

    Thanks for this video. I have the same board & CPU, and I couldn't get it to power on. I took everything out and just plugged in the power, like you did, and after a couple of tries, it finally took power and lit up. I still don't know if there are other problems yet, but at least I know the board lights up now. I was about to RMA.

    Actual hardcore overclocking has an excellent about what voltage regulators are for and what they do.
    Short story is this msi b350 mortar (and the rest of the MSI b350s, EXCEPT the b350m gaming pro) have 4+2 phase vrm (meaning 4 true phases for Vcore and 2 true phases for SOC voltage) which are good, and you will be able to overclock 8 core ryzens on these without problems. Just buy a b350m MSI board (excluding the gaming pro) if you want the best b350m power delivery.
    ASUS 4+2 are also good, gigabyte 4+3 boards are not as good because they use cheaper mosfets which can't handle the same temperatures. Asrock b350 boards have a Vcore phase count that looks like "6" but in reality it's a 3-phase with layout trickery to fool people, AVOID ASROCK B350 boards.
    Also avoid b350 boards without VRM heatsinks since you can get true 4+2 phase boards with a heatsink (like this B350m mortar) for the same price.

      bobsagget823 Thanks for the explanation. Should I get a MSI B350m Mortar or a Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3? Which has better power phase and VRM?

    • @bobsagget823
      @bobsagget823 7 років тому

      Actually I finished a build with the mortar + 1700 + 2x8gb 3200 B die for a friend and overclocking was a disaster. If you set the core voltage at or higher than 1.3V or so the CPU will get permanently downclocked to 1550MHz. I also kept the core voltage at auto and messed with memory subtimings & load line calibration and the same thing happened. Ultimately had to end up leaving the voltage at auto and left the cpu at 3.6GHz.
      The truth is AM4 boards are still buggy as fuck and if you're one of the lucky few who run into a problem like this it's unlikely you'll ever solve it. The downclocking bug seems to happen to a lot of boards (b350/x370) at random. Otherwise the bios for the mortar is actually pretty good, but it is missing core voltage offset, b-clock adjustment, p-phase overclocking, doesn't have dual bios, and the rgb functions are intentionally nerfed (need x370 board to get more than 7 predetermined colors, there's also another mobo vendor who nerfs the rgb controls on their b350 boards but I don't remember who). Oh and the mortar has the longest post time I've ever seen, it seriously takes forever to boot.
      IMO, go with the gigabyte board. The AB350 Gaming 3 is actually a full size atx board so I wonder if you made a typo there, but if that was intentional then it's definitely the better choice. Better sound chip, dual bios, more pcie slots etc. Power delivery should be very similar and you don't have to deal with MSI's stupid bullshit.
      All the am4 m-ATX boards are basically cheapo pieces of low-end shit that just happen to look nice. If you're looking for a 'high end' m-atx AM4 board: it doesn't exist lol.

    • @fridericusrex9812
      @fridericusrex9812 7 років тому

      Thanks a lot, really appreciate the info. I was gonna go for a mATX board because they're cheaper, but I guess not. I've just noticed the Mortar doesn't have full VRM cooling either. Do you know if the MSI B350 Gaming Plus and Tomahawk boards are any good? They're the same price as the Gigabyte Gaming 3.

  • @SuperFredAZ

    Power Phases are for the CPU "buck" regulator (not Boost), It takes the 12 V power from the power supply and "chops it up" into bursts. The Capacitors store the energy and then feeds the system from it. Each time it chops is one phase, the more phases, the shorter the system needs to feed from the capacitors (this is better), so 6 phases are better than 4 phases, and 10 phases are better than 6 phases.

    • @anthonyseboe4646
      @anthonyseboe4646 7 років тому

      That explains it. Thx!

    • @SuperBrainAK
      @SuperBrainAK 7 років тому

      it basically multiplies the equivalent switching frequency, single phase at 100kHz looks like 100kHz, however 6 phase at 100kHz looks like 600kHz to the load, so it is much easier to filter out higher frequencies with the capacitors without having to operate a single mosfet and inductor at 600kHz. it also helps with load spreading, 6 smaller things is better than one big thing.

    • @dalriada842
      @dalriada842 6 років тому

      Each buck converter phase will still have a ripple on it, even with the capacitors. By having multiple phases, and staggering the switching(phase) of each buck converter's control switching(pulse width modulation), the overall ripple is reduced. This leads to smoother power regulation.The more expensive the board, and the more likely the cpu is to be overclocked, the more power phases tend to be used.

    Could you please check which EZ Debug LEDs are on for you when the CPU is installed? Can't really tell from the video. I also have this motherboard (the arctic version) and have a setup without RAM (I still have to wait for it about 1-2 weeks) but when I turn the PC on, not only the DRAM but also the CPU LED is on which worries me as I can't confirm if this is normal, or there is any problem with the mobo or with the CPU and I should send them back.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому

      The DRAM and CPU LED's were on when I tested it in the video. I thought there was something wrong with it too. I think it is just because the CPU can't even run the CPU test without the RAM. Good luck with your build!

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому +1

      No there is not an on board GPU. The RYZEN CPU's are only the CPU. You need an APU to use the on motherboard display outputs. Currently with RYZEN you MUST use a separate dedicated graphics card. The APU's are supposed to release later this year.

    I tried test boot with my new msi b350 tomahawk coupled with Ryzen1700 and corsair vengeance 3000 ddr4 rams. It came on and posted then I did a soft restart...after that it never came back on again...it turned into a brick so to speak. Now I'm just waiting for RMA from Newegg. It kinda give me a flash back of my incident when I watched you test boot. I cleared cmos and reset everything but it never came back on again, Not even a single LED. Maybe I got a bad batch...Now I'm thinking of switching to asrock fatality b350 k4 gaming instead. I don't know yet, because they're about the same price range. I just don't want to go through that nightmare again. I was up half of night trying to figure out what went wrong. What do you think??? should I give a msi am4 tomahawk another chance or go with asrock fatality k4 b350 mobo...from my research asrock b350 has more vrm phase like 9 and also (2) m.2's and 6 sata ports...instead of MSI's 6 phase or 4+2 not too sure, and (1) m.2 and 4 sata ports...asrock fatality b350 might achieve better stability in overclock do to higher vrm phase count. I will need to make up my mind by Monday. They both have very good pros and cons. But I care more about stability at this point...

      I think 12, not 16. In Tomahawk (ATX version of Mortar) 12. Heatsink easy take off by 2 screws, it`s safety. I choose between Asrock AB350M Pro 4 or this mobo. Asrock has a great boot time and great BIOS options (P-state), but stupid PCIe design and 3 phase VRM with 2 chokes and 4 mosfets per phase.

    dose the bios need to be flashed when installing?

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому +3

      Not really. There are a few newer versions of a bios so I would recommend updating it once you have your system up and running. Mostly bug fixes and such. It's pretty easy. Just put the downloaded bios files on a flash drive. reboot and go into bios. in the basic bios page click M-flash. then select the file and let it do its thing. It'll restart or something and that's about all there is to it.

    Not a good idea to bench boot the motherboard on the anti-static bag. Static charge is designed to discharge externally across the bag surface. You could brick your board. Wood is safer. Thanks for the video otherwise.

  • @bobsagget823
    @bobsagget823 7 років тому +2

    Are you running the 1700 overclocked?
    If so, *is the CPU able to automatically downclock/reduce voltages (shift P-states) when idle?* There are reports that ryzen is locked to the OC'd clock & Vcore when overclocked which burns a ridiculous amount of power for no reason, and then there's reports of P-state switching/downclocking still working when overclocked but depending on the board.
    Literally there's no reliable information about this on the entire internet for the MSI B350 boards, please someone for the love of god answer this question LOL.
    I have the B350 mortar & a 1700 coming in for a friend and I need to know. PLEASE FUCK

      Check here for reliable information: forums.anandtech.com/threads/ryzen-strictly-technical.2500572/ Just read the first paragraph.
      You can't raise the clock of the processor without dropping all power saving features. Which sucks.

    • @bobsagget823
      @bobsagget823 7 років тому

      Well fuck me I swear to god some people still have P-state downclocking working on their boards. I know the high end asrock ones and the asus b350 prime (according to some random comment somewhere) might have that working, and possibly gigabyte with the newest AGESA coming this month (not remembering where I saw that though). The ASRock one for sure though because each P-state has its own volts/clocks in the BIOS. Guess the low end boards are shit out of luck.
      I know for a fact in the ryzen master user manual they state that C-states & P-state OCing should work but FUCK. Shit.
      Thanks for the link though, will go through it.

    • @ThaPrudii
      @ThaPrudii 7 років тому

      Well, the link only talks about overclocking, so maybe downclocking works regardlessly? :)

    I know this video is pretty old, but please, for the love of... well anything really, don't power up a motherboard while it's resting on the outside of an anti-static bag, those things are designed to be conductive on the outside, to protect the components on the inside from static electricity. You're super lucky that you didn't short something important and kill the board.
