  • I’m upgrading a 5 and a half year old Gigabyte AB350-GAMING motherboard from a Ryzen 1600 to a Ryzen 5700X. At least that is the plan. Trying a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO V2 CPU cooler to see if PBO will give any extra performance on this old motherboard.

@@metalplasticelectronics354 Got everything working. The cpu score on 3Dmark went from 5662 on the 1600 to 10052 on the 5700x. Quite the jump! I opted for the Deepcool AK400 cooler to replace the amd spire and temps went down about 13 degrees C. I am pleased with the upgrades for the price, and of course, not having to buy a new mobo for them. Cheers!

Two reasons. Seems to be a little faster in all core workloads. And I have a pci4 ssd and was thinking I might pick up a cheap B550 motherboard first of the year. I expect the AM5 stuff to push the price down on the AM4 gear quite a bit. But the price right now on the 5700G is just about unbeatable.

So, how did you manage to update the backup bios? If anything happens now - dualbios kicks in, overwrites your MAIN BIOS to factory settings (because back-up bios runs factory settings). This means you won't be able use your pc anymore, since it won't recognize the 5700x.

I have the 1600 tucked away in a safe spot, just in case. I've never looked into flashing the backup BIOS. There is probably a way to do it. Just thought it wasn't worth the effort to find out. This motherboard is going to be 6 years old soon. It's has run most every day in those 6 years. How much longer can the caps on the board go. So every day it boots up I consider a bonus day.

Hello. Thank you for the video. I also upgraded the processor on this motherboard to 5700x, but I'm worried that after a while this processor can kill the motherboard and die with it if the VRM power system cannot withstand such a long-term load. After a while, your assembly works stably?

It should be fine. The board was designed to handle the 1800x and that was a 95 watt processor, I think. The 5700x is only 65 watts. Even with PBO on, it’s probably pulling less than the 1800x did. The question is just how many years can the caps on the board last. I just hope at least one more year.

What you can do is go to Gigabyte’s website and look up the model of your motherboard. While the support list they give may not be up to date. Go to the BIOS update page. That will usually tell what the latest processors the board will handle. And your going to have to update the BIOS anyway to move to a newer processor.
