Super clear and concise and helped me complete an installation that has saved multiple parking frustations! I wish all videos were done this well. Thank you.
This just saved me so much time and stress. The instructions I got with my stereo told me to connect the reverse trigger wire to a wire behind my dash which would take a lot of effort. It's nice knowing I can just tie it in with the reverse light used to power the camera.
THANK YOU!! I was going nuts wondering what that little wire is for and where it goes, and why the heck it only works in reverse lmao. Now I know what to do to fix this. Thanks again! By the way, you need to do the second setup to be able to see the camera while adjusting parking lines... If you have it for reverse only setup, you'll have to be in reverse to adjust them in setup
This is really quite clear and comprehensive video with clarity. May be , the narration could be added with circuit diagrams . How to go for 2 cameras on oncord plus ?
Getting mine installed was a PITA, camera manual had no hints on what to use that little trigger wire for, and the head unit manual said it would automatically switch to the camera when 'hooked up to backup lamp circuitry.' I know my electrics, so I THOUGHT I understand what they meant. After watching countless videos already, I decide to check with the guys I bought the system from. Lo and behold, I now have it wired correctly! Now to get that stubborn plate screw out...
Thank you Chris, like Devin said a year ago, this video is the best on UA-cam if not the best anywhere Also CRUTCHFIELD is fabulous for electronics for your home or automobile Good Luck!!
Tomorrow's project, rewire my reversing camera that I only just installed myself, last week. I've been looking for how to view it at any time and not just when in reverse. Cheers for the extremely helpful video 👍🏼
Chris, very well done and informative... Look forward to more videos from you! VERY glad you went through the different variations so people could see why others may have done or said what they did. You DA MAN!!!!
I just bought a boss BE9ACP-C with you guys for my 2012 ford fiesta and had you guys pre-wire everything (ReadyHarness). It's already in the car without the camera wired yet so I can't look at it right now. But from what I can tell... since I have the AX-ADBOX1 interface module (in addition to my AX-ADFD02 harness)... the head unit will know when I'm in reverse already thanks to the module. So I only have to get power to the camera via the convenience wire (not reverse lights) so that I can have power all the time in an effort to have it automatically come on in reverse AND be able to toggle it on and off. Did... did I do my homework correctly? Not an electrician or skilled in this field at all but I've had a lot of fun trying to figure this stuff out thanks to you guys for providing the awesome products, the resources like this video... and potentially support via youtube comments! Cheers to Crutchfield !
@@crutchfield wow. Talking about a fast response. Okay, no special wires for this necessary? Just the 12v to camera via “convenience cable” and the black and yellow cable for video? You guys are the best!

I am happy that you found our video useful! Thank you for the kind words. We try hard to take the guess work out of performing your own installs, we are do-it-yourselfers too!
Thanks for explaining the convenience wire and the reverse trigger wire. The trigger wire was labeled "rear camera power" on my Boss radio and that slowed me down a lot. Need to mention to turn the camera function on in radio's "Camera Settings" menu.
I’ve ordered everything needed for my dodge caravan 2016 from your site it’s nice to see a company with tutorials and telling me we can help you thank you for a great video
This answered my questions exactly!!! Thank you so much. I had just finished wiring my radio and harness together and of course I only had my purple wire (Reverse +) left. My radio has a second harness (for Audio/Video input for camera and Media player) and I was trying to figure out if I'd be hooking into the reverse circuit, or powering from the head unit (since there was another power and ground line on the second harness). Now I know the differences. Thank you again.
I was struggling to get my camera to work until I watched this video. Excellent instruction! I had watched a few others that didn't quite get unto this level of detail, which you helped identify what i was missing. I do have a question though: I am powering mine directly to the stereo 12v acc, which works great, but the camera LEDs are always on. Is there anything I can do? I don't want to go the switch route.
The backup camera would need to provide separate power connections for the LEDs and the camera. If there is only one power wire for both, then there is no way to control them separately.
@crutchfield thanks for the response. So would you say it is common to operate with the camera LEDs on all the time? I'm concerned about how bright they are to drivers behind me at night.
We do not keep records to know what is common. Wish we had different news for you there. We do appreciate your concern for everyone's safety. If you are not able to use separate power for the LEDs and the camera, it may be best to wire them in such a way that the camera system only gets power when the vehicle is in reverse
I'm about to ditch trying to use my factory reverse camera with my aftermarket unit and just use a aftermarket camera, so this video will help me there. I've used your site at least twice before and had great success in two of my older vehicles. However I was a little disappointed recently with the instructions I received, or lack of, for my current vehicle. I found the wire guide, clear. The removal guide, clear. But the actual install, it's like they didn't bother. Granted you have different wiring per unit, per vehicle, but at least show one working example for that vehicle along with the procedure YOU followed to get it working, and not just the finished product sans all the critical steps in between. There are components you sold me as required that needed to be connected but are never mentioned where or how or what they connect to. Not even the manufacture has instructions. So it leaves me wondering if you even had a working model or just got stuck same as me with a bag of harnesses with no clear function beyond the name. 😮💨

Honestly I'd rather send/receive images and diagrams via Email if possible. I can show you where I'm at. You can draw an arrow over it and literally point me in the right direction. This illusive APIM module is not anywhere, other how-to's say it is.
Thanks Crutchfeild, This makes it so much easier to understand what all the wires are and for and all the different ways to get set up. 2 Thumbs up from me Down under "
Will it work if you just connect the convenience wire to the trigger wire on the head unit, and the other end convenience wire to the camera red/power (grounding the black) without taping into the reverse light? Another way of asking is will the head unit provide the power for the camera
The trigger wire on the head unit is an input. It doesn't provide power output so no you can't do what you are asking. However most Android head units and some others have both a reverse trigger input to tell the head unit your car is in reverse and also has a camera power output which will send power to the backup camera to turn it on.
Sorry, I'm more confused now than I was before. I'm just trying to hook up a backup camera to my Jensen CAR710X. I bought both from Crutchfield a couple of years ago, along with the wiring harness service. I'm just getting around to putting in the backup camera now. The radio installed just fine and works ok; it even looks for a backup camera when I put my Tahoe in reverse. However, the trouble is the camera wiring. I know about tapping into the backup lights, but this Tahoe doesn't have a convenient way to hide the power wire so I'm looking for a way to do it without using the backup light to power the camera. My 18-pin connector has the Camera in wire (yellow female RCA) which has that red convenience wire you mention. Can I just hook up the super-long camera RCA line (that has a convenience wire at both ends) to the one up at the head unit? Do I also need to use that reversing wire if the head unit is already looking for the camera when I put the car in reverse? Thanks. I hate wiring stuff so I was thinking with the harness service it would just be plug-n-play, and it isn't.

I really appreciate this video and the simplicity of it. I installed my unit using the method of powering from the reverse light. However, after working for a few weeks, whenever I put the car in reverse it blows a fuse and dash lights switch off (and car won't start). I'm not sure if I need to change the power source of the rear camera or it was too much for too long on the fuse (7.5a that keeps blowing). Any help would be appreciated!

Would it be possible to connect the red camera wire to the purple wire and then splice the red camera wire together with the accessory wire or would that be dangerous?
@@crutchfield I have a 2012 Audi A3 8P.I asked about the canbus option since my car has this and you didnt refer to this system and I was wandering if you sell a compatible device and how the installation differs from a regular system.Cheers👍
I was researching options for my 2014 Wrangler. Great video. Very helpful. I was thinking of mounting the backup camera on the 3rd brake light which sits above the rear spare tire. With this approach, I thought may be I could power the backup camera by tapping into the 3rd brake light wiring. Much appreciate your expert opinion if this is doable?
With a compatible camera, that's a good option. Do you have a specific camera in mind or would you like help choosing? Do you have the Unlimited model? Did your Jeep come with a factory Alpine sound system? What do you plan to connect the new camera to for viewing?
This might be the only video (or any instruction) that noted the black wire from the camera’s power cable doesn’t need to be tapped. I always wondered if it could be chassis grounded, but everything else I’ve read/seen states to tap into the black wire on the reverse lamp. This should make it a lot less confusing on my next install.
Hi, it is a great video explaining what and how to do it! I just want to know how to do it if you use a canbus in the middle, hope you can help me! Thanks
@@crutchfield Yes I have a Boss radio that came with a backup camera. I haven't installed it yet but the radio comes with a power wire specifically for the camera, so my plan is to use that

dude..I could not figure out what the hell I was doing wrong. I searched through aftermarket forms for my made in China pos radio, Watched other vids, I tried everything. I had given up on it. Then I watched halfway through this guy's video and figured it out. Thank you
Very good video. The only thing i couldn't resolve yet is... I connected the red wire to power of camera to the trigger wire but it didn't work because actually the head unit has a specific wire for 12v camera. I will connect that one, but i don't know where i can connect the trigger wire. Could i connect together as a three connects? Thank you 😊
Excellent! :-) I've bought a cheap camera for my 2-DIN Pioneer, as I don't need some 4K or HD resolution. Or not something even close to it. ;-) But the camera came without any good installation guide. Your video has to be best to explain different scenarios. As well it is not locked to a special brand. So thx again! Greetings from Norway! :-)
I'm sorry to sound like a crutchfield fan boy but DAMN NICE VIDEO. Answered some questions very well that the thousands of other videos skated around on. Kinda tapped the issue than got distracted by a shiny light and abandoned it abruptly. Thank you
This is a very helpful video. Although while looking at radios for my car (2006 Mazda Tribute) the description warns me that the reverse wire uses a negative signal. So I'm guessing the backup lights are ultimately wired and switched off of the negative pole, so that if I wire up the trigger wire for a camera it probably won't sense the voltage because it's looking for a positive 12v signal. It mentioned the use of a relay to use that negative backup lamp circuit to trip on a positive wire to rectify that, but after looking around and can't really figure out what kind of relay to use for that, do you guys have that on Crutchfield or could point me in the right direction?

I praise you for your lesson oh mighty one 😆😅🙏🙏
This was 8 minutes well spent. Crutchfield always doing it right, thank you for making this so simple to understand!
wow finally someone who can thoroughly explain this simple wiring , was lost and this made it simple thank god.
It's great to hear that you found it helpful!
Very resourceful. Been watch videos for weeks, and this is the best one so far. Especially for those who are new to wiring.
Thanks, Joma. Hope your installation goes well.
Wow this video was great! Give this man a raise!!!
It's great to hear that you found it helpful! 🙂
Super clear and concise and helped me complete an installation that has saved multiple parking frustations! I wish all videos were done this well. Thank you.
You're welcome! We are glad it helped
This just saved me so much time and stress. The instructions I got with my stereo told me to connect the reverse trigger wire to a wire behind my dash which would take a lot of effort. It's nice knowing I can just tie it in with the reverse light used to power the camera.
It's great to hear that you found the video helpful! 🙂
Thank You! I am adding a backup to my wife's car, and this was exactly what I needed. I should have known to look here first. You guys are the pros.
You're certainly welcome! It's great to hear that you found the video helpful! 🙂
Glad we could help! Hope it's all good from here and you enjoy your setup.
This is really quite clear and comprehensive video with clarity. May be , the narration could be added with circuit diagrams . How to go for 2 cameras on oncord plus ?
Getting mine installed was a PITA, camera manual had no hints on what to use that little trigger wire for, and the head unit manual said it would automatically switch to the camera when 'hooked up to backup lamp circuitry.'
I know my electrics, so I THOUGHT I understand what they meant.
After watching countless videos already, I decide to check with the guys I bought the system from. Lo and behold, I now have it wired correctly!
Now to get that stubborn plate screw out...
Way to go!
Thank you Chris, like Devin said a year ago, this video is the best on UA-cam if not the best anywhere Also CRUTCHFIELD is fabulous for electronics for your home or automobile Good Luck!!
Thank you, Ron!
Super clear, very thorough and easy to understand backup camera wiring video!
Thank you so much!👍
You're welcome. Hope your install goes well.
Best made video on backup camera install. Nothing is left out, exactly what I need. Thank you
Thanks, Anthony. Good luck with your installation!
Great video, host does a perfect jobs explaining the whole circuit
Thank you! 🙂
Tomorrow's project, rewire my reversing camera that I only just installed myself, last week. I've been looking for how to view it at any time and not just when in reverse. Cheers for the extremely helpful video 👍🏼
You're welcome! Good luck with your re-wiring.
@@crutchfield it worked a treat, cheers. Got my front camera hooked up too so I can better navigate those tricky 4WD lines 👌🏼
🎉, Great news! Way to go!
This is why I buy all my car electronics from Crutchfield. I once asked them to price match and they did. Instant sale!
Thanks for shopping with us! 🙂
Thank you for breaking this down so thoroughly. Very easy to get the basics of back camera wiring. Very much appreciated 👍
You're welcome, Joshua. Hope your installation goes well.
By far the best explanation of the issues to look for when wiring a back up camera. Thank you.
Thanks, Richard! Glad we could help. If you need anything further, please let us know.
Thanks for the educational video sir. Unlike other videos, yours also explained how each wire works. I almost bought a new rear cam 😂
You're welcome! It's great to hear that you found it informative! 🙂
Is it ok to tap into the cigarette, lighter ground I don’t really use the cigarette lighter ?
Chris, very well done and informative... Look forward to more videos from you! VERY glad you went through the different variations so people could see why others may have done or said what they did. You DA MAN!!!!
Thanks for the kind words! It's great to hear that you found the video helpful. 🙂
Cheers to Crutchfield
!
Sounds like you nailed it!
@@crutchfield wow. Talking about a fast response. Okay, no special wires for this necessary? Just the 12v to camera via “convenience cable” and the black and yellow cable for video? You guys are the best!
That's all the wires that are needed! If you purchased the camera as well, you can contact our technical support for help ensuring you are connecting the backup camera power wires to the correct wires in the vehicle
Perfect work I looked all over the instructions and UA-cam you are the only one that nailed thank you
I am happy that you found our video useful!
This is the best backup cam wiring video on yt.
Thanks! How did your installation go?
I’ve ordered everything needed for my dodge caravan 2016 from your site it’s nice to see a company with tutorials and telling me we can help you thank you for a great video
Thank you, Sean! Hope you enjoy your new setup and will let us know whenever you need anything else.
want to add a backup camera to my wifes care, this is a very clear explanation , thank you
You're welcome, Walter. Hope your installation goes well.
You're welcome! We are glad to know that this video helped you get up and running
Awesome video. Haven't done this kind of work in ages and now there are so many more options than 4 speakers and power. LOL! So informative!
Welcome back! What type of setup are you planning?
Great video as always. I wish we had Crutchfield here in the UK. I love your tech articles.
Thanks! It's great to hear that you found it helpful! 🙂
@@crutchfield I find you helpful, but we need you in the UK! 🇬🇧

Man answered all my curiosities on why it wasn’t working 😂 great video brother thanks for taking the time to make it.
You're certainly welcome! We're glad to hear that you found it helpful. 🙂

2 Thumbs up from me Down under "
We are happy to know that this video helped!!
Will it work if you just connect the convenience wire to the trigger wire on the head unit, and the other end convenience wire to the camera red/power (grounding the black) without taping into the reverse light? Another way of asking is will the head unit provide the power for the camera
What brand and model camera do you want to install?

He's great, I agree! I am delighted that you found his video helpful.
the only place on the internet where i could find nice instructions
Glad we could help! 😊

This is the best video on this PERIOD!
Cleared up my confusion
Thanks, J'Are! Glad we could help.
Would it be possible to connect the red camera wire to the purple wire and then splice the red camera wire together with the accessory wire or would that be dangerous?
We do not advise deviating from the install instructions with any camera install.
I wanted to come back in here and give a second like to this. THANK you so much for this... It was a breeze after this guide.
That is awesome! So glad we could be of help! What vehicle did you do the install on?
Man this is a great video. Made my hooking up my back up cam so much easier. Thank you
You're welcome! It's great to hear that you found it helpful! 🙂
Excellent video, much appreciated. My car has Can bus system, how does that differ? Apparently you dont connect to reverse wire!
Thanks, Fernando. The best wiring option will come down to the radio and camera you use. Do you have specific models in mind?
@@crutchfield I have a 2012 Audi A3 8P.I asked about the canbus option since my car has this and you didnt refer to this system and I was wandering if you sell a compatible device and how the installation differs from a regular system.Cheers👍
Are you hoping to add a camera to the factory radio or an aftermarket radio?
This is the best video on this subject.
Thank you! 🙂
That is awesome to hear! We are happy that you found the video helpful. 🥰
This is extremely high-quality instruction, thank you.
about to start this on my own car, this video helped IMMENSELY. Thanks!
We are glad it helped!! Hope the install was a success!!
This was wonderfully concise. Thank you for such a clear video
You're welcome! It's great to hear that you found it helpful. 🙂
this is called professional youtuber !! thanks bunch
Hi, it is a great video explaining what and how to do it! I just want to know how to do it if you use a canbus in the middle, hope you can help me! Thanks
The best options will depend on the aftermarket radio and camera you're using. What brand and models do you plan to install?
This video is so helpful, thanks so much. My radio comes with power for the backup camera so now I know how I want this wired.
You're welcome, Freddie. Are you planning to use a specific backup camera?
@@crutchfield Yes I have a Boss radio that came with a backup camera. I haven't installed it yet but the radio comes with a power wire specifically for the camera, so my plan is to use that
Okay, cool. Hope your installation goes well and you enjoy your new radio/camera.
Insanely helpful video. My camera came with no instructions and I had no clue what the convenience wire was
Sounds like you're all set?
Question! Can I connect red wires from 2 camera video cables to hot stereo input wire?
Thank You for the clear instructions! You can also run a wire for the back up camera all the way back to the reverse tail light wire along with the video cable!
You can connect the reverse trigger wire to a backup lamp circuit still.
dude..I could not figure out what the hell I was doing wrong. I searched through aftermarket forms for my made in China pos radio, Watched other vids, I tried everything. I had given up on it. Then I watched halfway through this guy's video and figured it out. Thank you
Glad to hear you're all set! If you need anything further, please let us know.
What's the benefit of connecting the black wire to the chassis ground compared with using the ground wire from the lamp circuit?
Be sure you wire the camera for its own ground to the vehicle's chassis to provide for the best and safest power current.
Thank you 😊
Hi Rachel, the reverse wire generally connects at the radio. Be sure to refer to and follow your camera specific instructions.
We are glad that it helped!!
I never comment on videos. But this was so to the point and helpful. Thanks
You're welcome! It's great to hear that you found it helpful. 🙂
Thank you guys, you saved me from calling your tech support line, the video answered all my questions! YAY Thank you !
YAY!! You're welcome!
Great breakdown! Do you have a breakdown for front cameras?
Hi James, the installation would be comparable for the front camera other than wiring for automatic reverse video.
Great video clear and direct straight to the point thanks
You're welcome! It's great to hear that you found it helpful. 🙂
I'm sorry to sound like a crutchfield fan boy but DAMN NICE VIDEO. Answered some questions very well that the thousands of other videos skated around on. Kinda tapped the issue than got distracted by a shiny light and abandoned it abruptly. Thank you
Thanks so much!! We're happy to help folks understand this and glad you enjoyed the video! 😄
Thank you so much for this comprehensive video on wiring methods!!
You're welcome, Otis. Hope your installation goes well. If you need anything else, please let us know.
We sure do sell a relay that can be used to convert a negative trigger to a positive trigger:
