Watching videos of The Pilot testing out various ships is what got me playing ED. Hell, I had to buy a new PC in order to be able to play ED. And now I have a total of 18 ships (and counting). While building cash reserves to buy a fleet carrier to store them all in. And yes, I have all 3 of the C ships. A rated, prismatic shields, Guardian FSD Booster, and adding engineering as I farm sufficient mats and get engineers unlocked. Never ending process.

If it didn't have the three military only slots, this might be one of my favorite ships. The military slots kill it for pretty much anything but combat, though. Damn I wish I didn't love this thing.

They Should do like passengers ships. Remove restrictions on slots.

So, as an idea for when you finally run out of ships to review, other than moving onto fighters or weapons/modules/engineering, you could do a couple more direct comparisons of the C series and the Federal Mid-size series, with all three in frame together doing competitions old top-gear-challenge style.

I got the crusader a few days ago and I like it a lot. I think it's a very underrated ship.
I still remember when we thought this ship would be a large-class ship. You think if it was, would it potentially better (of course assuming it being large means it has more internals and hardpoints)?

This was my first real ship after months in a hauler. Back then I thought it was amazing. Now it’s just a nice collection in my fleet.
I don't know why UA-cam is claiming that I haven't already watched these and recommending them to me again.... but I'm not complaining.
Honestly, this is one of my fav bounty hunting ships, not because it's great but because I can make just about any setup work... I'm gonna take it thargoid hunting as soon as I finish engineering it :)

To me it seems like the Crusader is basically a Keelback with better maneuverability, slightly better optional internals, and more guns. Or in other words, if you like the Keelback you'll probably like this thing too.
I use a Crusader for Bounty Hunting but then I have a Lance Fighter, say no more, I enjoy the show with coffee & chocolate & laugh like a madman on steroids as I Collect all the Engineering goodies left over from the ship or Ships that were.

Happy to see I'm not the only one using the moniker "C-Series", though I might be using it for a different reason than most people (local plane manufacturer, Bombardier, used to have a prototype passenger plane called the C-Series. Didn't sell well under that name, because reasons, and ended up partnering up with Airbus, and now it's known as the A220 model.)

you have your finger on the pulse of this game. in the Cobra video you remarked that it's great because it's the first ship you make your own, which is excactly what my friend is doing right now. and the ending of this one is my exact attitude to the crusader. "is it good? no, do i care? not in the slightest." it's cool, it's fun, and it's my ship.

I love the crusader (the HMS Claymore) because (other than the grade 3 dirty drives) unengineered it is relatively affordable (about 75 mil fully outfitted to mostly grade A) and most importantly it suites my specification: Powerful in combat with ship launched fighters. I have a friend who i got into the game and they much prefer hanging out with me in my taipan than flying on their own. The crusader is the second cheapest slf capable ship allowing me to hang out in high res sites or low conflict zones or have an NPC fly the mothership and mess about in a taipan. Its also really pretty and looks like a ship you would find in a proper scifi movie, the way the other seats are up and behind the main one makes it seem like a proper bridge in a way that a cutter doesn't

I'm not one for ship combat, but this ship makes it so much more fun to me.
Bought this because I wanted a halo pelican. Stuck with it because it's a 20million credit hulk of firepower for it's class.
One person takes the helm, two deploy fighters, and one uses turrets mounted on the top and bottom so they always have a line of fire. Absolute pirate melter for relatively cheap.
Fun with AI crewmates and even more fun with three friends.
That "get 'em, boys" moment every time your ship is engaged and 10 different guns light then up is a lot of fun.
This was my first "proper" combat ship, and did I want a Krait MkII over this ship? OF COURSE I DID! But I was a new player. I could barely afford to outfit my half-assed Vulture at the time. I was thinking of something with fighters, something I could teach an even-newer friend of mine combat in. I thought about a Keelback, but it sucked BAD in all but a few combat situations. So, after inquiring with a friend, I had my heart set on the Sader. I needed to make 18 million credits, and fast. I was morally opposed to deep-core mining as a strategy since it ruins player progression. So I went to the last CG, in Reorte, and grinded the hell out of commodity runs to Lave in my beloved Dolphin, taking less than 100 tons per trip. I got in the top 25% and bought the Sader, then upgraded modules until I didn't even have enough credits left for a rebuy. Then I spent weeks grinding missions in my existing ships, pouring all credit revenue into modules. This thing is like the Cobra Mark III of fighter-compatible ships: you have to work for every module, and it's only one step above a Sidewinder (or rather its fighter equivalent, the Keelback). I painted the ship purple. I tried on a bunch of different hardpoint options. Then I took it out to a HazRes for the first time and had to spend some cash on a rebuy. But did I give a shit? No! I started to engineer it, using what little materials and access I had at the time. I got ganked by some asshole in Sol. I kept getting bounty vouchers and started doing CZs. I've really come to love this ship. And even though my credit balance is way higher now, and even though I bought a Krait Mark II, I still love my Crusader. It just means so much to me, to think of the time I sank into it.
completely agree with you, I have my Crusader to have fun with, not spend hours min maxing a build, have enough of that on the Anaconda already.

Apparently I'm the one who likes pineapple pizza. Pretty new pilot here and I really enjoyed flying the Keelback with a fighter in combat missions. Except, I wanted it to be more durable, more manueverable, with more guns and slots and a less smashy canopy. The Alliance Crusader feels like a bigger, faster, stronger Keelback and that's fine for me.

Apparently we have the same thoughts regarding this ship - it's not GOOD, but it is an idea that we can get behind. Also if you somehow manage to get the multi-crew working then it's way more fun that it's compatriots.
Why did I buy a Crusader: I needed a ship that could launch two fighters at the same time for multicrew adventures and I was too poor to afford a Krait MkII.
And because it's fucking badass looking.
This ship is the perfect example of "how blind" they are at Fdev,a string of missed opportunities.
Bro, I'm not gunna lie. I was looking for actual gameplay reviews for all the ships to watch while my sons playing around for too long in the bath, but I found these. I've been sitting here probably longer than I should, but I can't tear myself away from the honesty and general anti-meta rhetoric. I love the crusader. I'm rolling around in a challenger at the moment because I need to accomplish things after starting over on xbox, but the crusader was hella fun. Everyone hates it, yes, but fuck em. Its gorgeous and fun to fly, and who wants to fly cookie cutter meta ships all day?

My Crusader, The Falconer, was an absolute joy to fly.
The best way to do it was to use multicrew and a fighter pilot, so that while the AI flew the fighter, the crewmate could launch the missiles and man the chin turret. We had so much damage output that no other medium ship in the game stood a chance.
If they ever fix the multicrew, I'll definitely have to jump back in to Elite and give it another go.

I have a Crusader and I love it!
I spent an entire month running massacre missions for my fleet carrier. I leaned on 4 ships to do this. Krait, gunship, crusader, and type 10. Hands down, the type 10 brought in the most bag and kills. The krait hardly got used at all unless I was high grade signal farming at the same time. It came to the gunship or the crusader… and I’m still torn. If anything the crusader edged out the gunship just based on looks.
There are so many good looking ships that are eclipsed in terms of performance by just a handful of ships, some that are not even that good looking, I wish there was a way to make every ship work better besides engineering or guardian modules and what not. Whats the point of ships like The Crusader if The Chieftain exists? why would someone choose the ASP Scout over the ASP Explorer? why would you not choose the FDL for combat? Whats the point of all the small size ships when they are dead if someone sneezes on them? some are not even that fast or agile compared to larger ships. The balancing in this game is so fucking weird, and the rock-paper-scissors mechanics are annoying. Engineering should give lower tier chips a fighting chance but all it does is making ships that are already on the top of their class to over-perform to the point anyone not using the meta loadout is just out of the game and might as well not even be playing. Sure there is some satisfaction to be had when playing outside of the meta, to make a ball of mud shine, but the work and time invested to accomplish that could be used better elsewhere.
I cant even go and buy one of every ship to look at them just because they are pretty to look at, I have to pic one at a time and that's it, all my parked ships are reduced to a stock hologram on a menu at a random station that cant even be called home. I hope the fleet carriers brings some sort of "garage" so I can look at all my ships at once, because thats what this game is missing, a proper dock for all our ships to do nothing but just to sit there and be pretty.
While you are right there are many issues in balance the point of the alternate versions of the same base hulls is very apparent. They all add either unique bonus like the SLF bay option, more weapons, meaningfully longer jump range etc, or for a few of the more lazy ships just a cheaper slighter worse variant. There are many cases where a small ship can beat the larger ones.. They just rarely get the kill as when the big ships shield generator goes boom they have the hull to just bugger off for example. Also why should all small ships be agile? Look at some of them as its clear the rest of the ship is just life support for the weaponry - DBX springs to mind rather big and numerous hardpoints for such a small box. Or they are made to drag as much tonnage as possible in their footprint - though these ones tend to be ok agility wise, they just don't posses anything much more threatening than targeting lasers or slightly souped up Point defense weapons.
I'd love it if a ship garage could be a thing - my T6 hasn't seen a repair or respray after many long long ly (most before RNGesus needed blood sacrifice or they fixed it so you always got something good eventually) I'd love to oggle its worn paint and remember going so far in that ship just because I hate the 'conda and dbx is too small. And the paint jobs on my little fleet of fighters would set off the mottely collection of keelbacks. I have a few of them for fun weapon loads and specific jobs - small ships become lethal in a wing - enough hardpoints between you to have the right experimental effects for all occasions.

@@foldionepapyrus3441 not all ships should be agile, obviously, regardless if its a small ship or not, the thing is small combat ships are not as effective as some of the medium options, the big stick in the mud being the FDL, and combat variants of multipurpose or exploration ships are kind of a letdown too. Someone with enough skill should be able to get in something like an imperial eagle and defeat a person in a ship like the FDL, but that's not the case, it's just silly to think about that encounter not going completely array for the eagle pilot. Now of course thats a kind of a starter ship to begin with, but even someone in the chieftan would have trouble fighting against an FDL. And while of course small ships have a place in a wing, the way combat in this game works makes PVE combat while being part of a wing completely trivial (imo), and there is just not enough people actively fighting in open as to justify PVP wing squadrons (imo) , yes people can arrange PVP fights but honestly that takes away a lot of the taste and point of PVP for me, I want a reason to fight other than being a good sport, I dont want to ask someone else for a fair fight, I shouldn't have to ask for a fair fight, that's what tournaments are for and I dont want tournaments, I want to start shooting and see what becomes of it, I want a battle of skill and migh, I want to jump into a system as part of a big fleet in the middle of a heated battle between the Empire and the Federation, a battle that has been raging on for days and has become an absolute clusterfuck a la EVE online but not quite, a battle where the fucking capital ships dont run away and instead explode into pieces, a battle so important there is more than 1 capital ship per faction. HECK I want the powerplay factions to have their own fucking capital ships. I want to get in my imperial courier and zip zap around taking potshots at unsuspecting targets, evading their damage while I slowly deplete their shields. I basically want to be a starwars x-wing and suicide into the bridge of a bigger ship. But I cant because my target is an FDL with engineered prismatic shields...
@@SnzyBat Love the passion and most of what you said. I think there are two problems to getting more people in open. For me the big one is how often the netcode leads to unplayable laggy shit. The other is crime and punishment, those folk that get their rocks off killing newb sidewinders, defenseless exporer etc never really get called out, seen to be punished, and there is no 'reward' for being 'rescued' (rebuy) with info on them. If there were bulitins of "CMDR Shithead murdering innocents/ hunting federal sympathisers in systems you are near" it would help hugely. Letting the players who are seeking combat know where its kicking off so it might actually happen and those that wish to avoid it having a greater chance to do so.
A big point I disagree with is small combat ships for me can still way outperform their medium counterparts - it all depends on what you are fighting as well as skill of both pilots. The Eagle/Courier/Viper can be both fast and agile enough that 1 on 1 you should never take hits from fixed weapons, and a little chaff negates turrets and gimbles. I did some PvP (unintentionally - was loaded for PvE) in Eagle and Courier and it was trival to use the long range weapons and speed/agility to never take meanful hits from the guys that tried to killed me.. Equally I wasn't ever really going to achieve much against them as x shield cell banks in I'll still have my laser, but they will run out of dakka or patience and left.
As for Chieftain vs FDL I don't think its quite as one sided as it always seems - its more for me that FDL has been king for so long everyone interested in the hard to dispute best all round combat ship knows how to fly it and engineer it.. Doesn't mean the alliance ships/Mamba/python can't pull an upset and they do have lots of reasons to pick one them over the FDL like being able to jump out of the system you are in, or cargo space for piracy etc...
We do really need a fix to the stupid shield meta, so silent running and hull tanking actually has a point again (or at least make torpedo and mine that kill the generator more usable and effective) suddenly things would be much more fun and carting 50K of shields with the regen banks isn't going to be the 'only' way to play.
Love the captiol ship idea, I've been hoping for 'wing' faction missions of hunting out rival ones, damaging/capture/loot/killing them. Would be nice to think fleet carriers might bring a little of that to us as well. If many of us have such big ships... though time will tell what we can actually do with them.
Engineering can allow the smaller more accessible ships to punch above their weight and allow you to take on more content with them. As you said though they can't compete with the top flight ships.
Engineering and refitting the smaller more accessible ships is something you do for kicks when you've finished building out the go-to ships of your stable. You know when you're rolling up your sleeves, preparing to put in some real work you're not taking those B or C team ships even if they're engineered.
I will always love the crusader, because it gave me a thirst for ship launched fighters and that brought me to the krait II.
It may be a bad ship, but it looks like what I consider to be the perfect drop ship.

I haven't got a Crusader yet, but I have chosen it as a sort of support ship for my friends and I in Odyssey, both of them are using very good combat ships. Meanwhile I'm just there to enjoy life in Elite Dangerous, going to equip it with 1 fighter Bay, 1 planetary vehicle bay, pack hounds and something to deal with shields. As I said before, I'm not really interested in combat and would be equipping modules and hardpoints to how I would use it if I owned it in real life. Not there to be the best at anything, just there to do what I like to do.
I fly this thing more than my KraitII in combat ngl. With a fighter, 2x heal beams, and enough firepower to spare if smartly engineered this thing is SUPER underrated for solo bounty hunting IMO. Best thing about the C-series apart from the looks is that they all have excellent hardpoint placement.

Yeah I don't understand what the third one is supposed to be. It makes so many compromises to add that fighter bay it's ridiculous. The other two are pretty decent as long as you equip a MRP to keep your canopy intact. Still it's tough to argue selecting one of the Chieftain line over a medium from Faulcon DeLacy.
i love the looks of this ship its my favorite ship in the game... well to be honest id love a combo of all the ships into one have the fighter bay... those pylons from the challenger on the back and the forward thrusters idk why but that just seems so cool to me as an idea for a design and if you wanna go all out have all the hardpoints from all the other ships mounted on it as well and just total your power distributor.
I'm wondering if Lakon intended these things to work in mixed packs, each model balancing out the flaws of the other.
Crusader as a fighter carrier whilst the Chieftain runs ahead as both the gun platform and as a distraction to keep attackers away from the Crusaders. What about the Challenger? Close support of the Crusaders, I think. Mobile shields and armour plate to keep back anything that gets through the marauding Taipans and Chiefs out at the front of the formation but able to also keep the skies around them clear.
Still have an 'Alliance Constrictor' on my wish list, though. Something Corvette or even Defender-sized that merges all the best qualities of its little brothers.
Oh, and if I ever get an Adder Mk3 with that Union Jack paint job, I'm so naming her 'Quadrophenia'.
Think about how those three packs together against the goïds.
This is my main ship with a sleek bright white paintjob and rocking green thrusters/weapons. She might be a glorified brick strapped to the tits with hardpoints, but heck if she ain't the most ruthless gunship I've ever flown. I tried moving onwards and upwards to a Fer-De-Lance and even a Python, but they went straight into the junkyard as I found myself going back to my first love and joy the Crusader.

The Cobra 3 got me to the Crusader which I sold when I could afford the Krait mk2 (favourite ship) which in turn got me to the Anaconda and yet I still kind of miss the Crusader for some reason I can't quite put my finger on. I love it but don't know why.

the crusader is one of the best pirate ship for your buck... its 1/2 the price of the krait all around and for some pirate action you dont need 3 large hardpoints. the cargo is good enouth if you forget about the fighterbay. and if you dont save on weight. the hulllock is quite nice.
i started playing elite when Epic games gave it for free a couple of months ago, coulnd't be happier, and without watching any ship review before choosing "that is the ship i am aiming for" out of the 3 "V-tol dropship" looking ships i picked the crusader, and since i'm mostly a singleplayer guy, i prefer it having the small fighter xD
Once engineered, this ship is awesome, have to customise it to your needs, take mine to a haz rez all the time!

It's not the ship, it's the pilot...tried all the ships, but this one is mint, I love it.
Just bought this ship and upgraded it and im not dissapointed at all it has less shields then a krait mk2 but more armor about the same speed and a little bit less firepower also because of the size of the hardpoints and its distributer being smaller but 1 corrosive multicannon solves the problems with armor being resistant some more to smaller weapons . All in all its actually a pretty nice ship if im honest and its easier to pick off small ships in the allience ships but to be fair it has a harder time against big ships just because the krait and any other medium ship with a size 7 distributer can do higher dps over all an thus take big ships down faster
