Yeah, I was waiting for the shoe to drop when he began trying to turn-fight in this thing. It has one of the single best yaw values in the game and is amazingly good once you get a feel for that. In fact, all of the Federal ships are like that, the Gunship is just better than most. You need to build and fly these things in a specific way, but they are strong competitors when you do, much stronger than he makes them out to be.
(I know this is old but hopefully you're still alive lol) And that adds to the value of the ship. If you can fly in a way someone else can't you have an advantage. EDIT I saw the 3y on the other comment and thought that was you. Good to know you were alive as of 10 months ago lol. @Phoenix-214
I actually love the look of the Gunship and its sister ships. Something about the troop carrier type of design and aesthetic of it. Makes me want to lead a squadron of 10 and land by a colony while rolling out SRVs and having infantry storm the complex. Such a tough, fierce, brute ship. I love it.
@@interruptingcow2418 I'm pretty sure that canonically the federal ships are able to land and fly on atmospheric world's. So your answer is, it actually makes plenty of sense if that's the case.
Just unlocked Founders World. Being able to buy all the ships in the game at one place is too tempting. I need to assemble my fleet before the fleet carrier comes out!
I just realized that when we're allowed to roam around on planets with Odyssey I'm going to call in my buddy to fly in and do a gun run on the other people on planet like the space version on an A-10
If only we had SPACE LEGS IN SHIPS, we could deploy ground marines Via Drop ships covered by Gunships gun running and Assault ships clearing the skies alongside their corvette wing boss, but no.

great review. I used to ignore how fast a ship could be. I just didnt understand why thats important. One day I got pulled out of supercruise with Mission critical goods in my Asp explorer with no weapons, I yelled "PUNCH IT CHEWIE!" and left the pirate far behind, startled I waited and he eventually started to catch up, flashing lasers at me like a complaint, I slowly started to pull away again and realized that guns are good but moving like lightning is great.
Nothing quite like dumping all pips to engines and hearing those babies roar. I just can’t bring myself to fly an Asp though. Hate the look. No judgement!

I have gone to sag A star several times just for fun. the only thing I never have tried is thargoids. fighting them just looks like another grind. so I have to mix up the ships. I hated the type 10 until I used it to mine with auto turrets. then suddenly I was like "oh, I do like this beast!"
I got the FGS when the feds temp lost the rank requirement to help people fight the goids. It's been my dedicated bug killer since. Fun ship and maybe not the best but still capable.
It's been roughly a week since I discovered this channel, and I love it. You've made me love all of my ships again. I did all of my collecting a long time ago, financed from stacked hutton data runs while I drank coffee in the next room. I used to just do things in my 'vette because I love it, but these videos have inspired me to mix it up with what I fly.

I actually quite like the look of it. It has an aggressiveness to it, rather than a beauty. Sort of like the difference between Italian and German cars. Oh and sticking a load of high cap seeker missile launchers to it is fabulous too ☺
Never really gave this ship a thought, but now that I'm getting into the Federation rank grind I may have a play around with it when I unlock it, mainly cause it looks like it could be a fun ship just to let off some steam and kill some space pirates. great review as always :)
Another great video. Thank you for the obvious passion, continuous quality, and observing the fourth wall in your videos. Your videos make the elite universe more fun and immersive. Totally agree on the FGS. Was my first medium ship I truly engineered and focused on. I have since graduated to other stuff by I still use my FGS use loaded with packhounds and beams as my Federal Funship because it is stupid and glorious. The FGS makes PVE combat fun and easy but is overlooked due to its lack of prowess in PvP.
Every time I have to fight one of these, I know I can outturn it, I know I can outrun it, but I also know I definitely can't outshoot it. While an NPC gunship may not win against me, if put in the right hands, these things can definitely put up a fight!
Just wanted to say I love your reviews. You highlight the ship’s optimal strengths and builds but also give some caveats with the weaknesses. Whenever I think about buying a new ship to try out, I consult one of your videos. o7
Bought it thanks to this video, had to grind a bit first though, it has 2 small fragment cannons with double shot, 2 medium beam lasers, 2 overcharged medium multi-cannons and 1 overcharged large multi-cannon. I tore a Type 10 to shreds, it was beautiful. I also bought a Type 10 because of you and it’s basically an unstoppable Flying Fortress with mining capabilities.
Most of the federal 3 are considerably tougher then folks give them credit for. With a fully upgraded dropship I blasted by way through a Krait on several occasions. I’ve blasted my through krait phantoms, through the odd python even. The key is the biggest turrets you can hang on it and a big ass rail gun
As someone who unabatedly loves the Krait Mk2... This damn thing is the absolute *bane* of my existence. Though with a little help from a HazRes next to a star and some thermal damage, it did force me to join the Quadruple 0 Club and survive 😂 (0% hull, display showing 0:00 oxygen remaining when I passed through the second barrier of the mailslot)
Thanks. I haven’t spent time in the FGS yet, just DS and FAS. I thought they were fun to fight in but not the best companions for traveling around (like for engineering) with their awful jump range and poor heat management when trying to scoop. Eagerly awaiting the Adder review.
I enjoy all the Core Dynamics Fed ships. Sure they're bricks but I always liked the design(s) of the first 3 (as well as the Corvette). The FGS and FAS remind me of aerial fighter aircraft. FGS is a lot of fun when engineered but I have to say, I really love the FAS. It's been ages since I've flown either but the FAS... speed, maneuverability and a nose that acts as a 3rd large hard point. Good times. Keep up the great videos! o7

stiimuli probably a continuation of those Top Gear equivalents in Elite dangerous he’s done with Yamiks and such, whacky challenges and all picking the ship they believe to be best for the job.
Imagine a couple of them escorting other slow ships, like a convoy, or guarding a few mining freighters. When your enemy has to come to you to get what they want, you don't have to be as fast as them. And there's that fighter bay. It's like it was designed with that in mind
5:24 This is the problem I have with dedicated combat ships. There are some very potent combat ships like the Fer-de-Lance but in most cases you sacrifice so much jump range and loadout flexibility for a tiny bit of extra combat performance. Many multipurpose ships are just so good at combat, there's not much reason to fly an actual combat ship. I love the Chieftain and it's variants. And I love the Federal rank ships. But why on earth would I buy any of these things before I have enough money to buy ships just because I like them? I could buy a Krait Phantom instead. Or a Krait MkII if I have the money. Or an Asp Explorer if I don't.
I love the gunship. I originally bought and engineered one to join Mini on one of his Dakka Dakka fun days, great fun it was too. Since, I have converted it to a missile ship with 4 pack hound missile racks and 3 beam lasers with thermal vent to keep it from overheating, which works really well. In fact until I fire the pack hounds the temperature is at zero % when all the lasers are on target and even after the pack hounds launch it only hits around 35%. Highly recommended for some destructive fun.
I got the Gunship because I wanted a fighter equipped medium combat ship. Passed up the Krait because it would step on my Python's toes. One of my favorite things is that is can equip a class 6 fighter bay, meaning you can have two fighters launched between your one multi crew member and NPC crew. For weapons, multicannons are the big deal, but I do shake it up a little by putting two fragment cannons on the nose hardpoints. Changes up how I fly and it actually handles quite well in knife fighting range.
I don't need my wood chipper to be pretty, I need it to reduce whatever I feed it to tiny tiny pieces, and the FGS does exactly that. This ship IS fun as hell, even unengineered. *Watches this video* *Promptly buys FGS* *Loads with Multi Cannons, moar hull, and renames it to MAXIMUM DAKKA* Hehehe...FGS go BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTT
It doesn't have more armor than the Challenger. More base hitpoints, yes, but it comes up short on HP if it trucks a hangar bay, and has a slight edge if the Challenger rocks a C1 FSD interdictor. It's also much better with 5x Plasma cannons and a couple of C1 utility weapons (usually Feedback rails). The ship's time on target, as you noted is abysmal, and it gets much more mileage out of weapons that don't need lots of facetime to do their work.
I see you took it and had some fun with CMDR Feisty Goat. He's the first and only guy to gank me so far. I'm not even mad anymore, he puts up a fun fight for those looking for it!
The "mini Vette" requires a little finesse, FA off. If not toggle YAW boost FA off. After that triple OC MC's/Plasma's twin Packhounds Drag/Thermal and twin LR cascade rails. Fixed beam fighter to complete the package. More than enough to stay on track with Chieftains etc. Great work as usual, looking forward to the next!
(Essentially I don't think it was built to be a solo ship) Wasn't it described as a support ship? So not fast, maneuverable, but more like a heavy tank role as part of a larger scale, greater offensive? And isn't that why it looks like a derivative of the others? Because modifying existing designs to conserve on money and part interchangeability in a large scale war is key?
Possible. But then it would be a ship built for an entirely different game. One where they had fleet mechanics and specializations for that kinda combat. Which seems pretty true of a lot of ships we've worked through lately. Still, it's a video game. It's boring. And they've used the same design for three ships. Just no.

i havent flown the gunship, but for me it sounds more like its supposed to be flown with at least 1 wingman and while he/they distract the enemy you hold down the trigger.
Out fitted mine with 4 cannons 2 turret pulse on top and 1 gimballed pulse. Once shields down and all 4 cannons hit enemy ships hull drops 15% to 20% a pull
Used to be my main PvE ship until I got the Corvette. Now it's my PvE ship in Colonia. I tried the all-dakka loadout but that wasn't for me. The hardpoints are now: Main: 2 legacy engineered OC MCs and an APA with matched shot speed. Secondary: 2 Pack-Hounds to take down runners. Support: Corrosive Enforcer and a turreted Beam Laser.
Late to the party on this but I'm going to say it anyways. I am glad I found your review and your thoughts on this. I got this ship a month ago and have been in absolute love with it. Sure it's slow but that's okay. I'm not flying a ship, I'm flying a fucking gun and everything looks like they're hungry for my bullet snacks.
Awesome again, but still not the FDL, Corvette or Clipper. As every week, I will now have to buy and outfit one of these. Keep them coming. Love your work!
I bought my Gunship way back, during a community goal or other that resulted in Federal ships being sold cheaper and with no rank requirement for a week. I've blown up countless pirates in this ship. It's not the best at combat, and it's terrible at everything else. But there's just something about those 7 multicannons, plus a fighter, all firing at your target. Great video, Cutter next please!
Rolled around in one of these for almost 2 straight years, nearly cried the day we got the fighters. Still got her too but haven't had the time to re-engineer it (has the old mods still). The secret to this monstrosity it to turn off FA, then break the toggle.
Styling reminds me of the Kushan corvettes in Homeworld. Slab sided/THICC, gimbaled guns everywhere, and mostly ignorable.... till you get swarmed by them in a rue awakening that they do exist.
Reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Homer made a scale model of the nuclear power plant, and his only improvement was adding fins to the cooling towers
personally i think u should do the clipper next. since the gunship is the 3rd ship u get in the federal navy, its only fair to do the third one in the imperial navy.
I Have all four Fed. ships and from a vets point of view I understand why they are what they are. The Drops Ships is just that an Armed troop transport. For going from space to surface. Then to provide close fire support for marines as they advance from insertion to first waypoint. They would do SAR work for wounded marines on surface or pilots in space. The Assault ship does the same job as the Drop ship except it works in space sending Marines to enemy space Stations or ships. The Gun Ship Is exactly that! It is a close support ship at objective taking out ground installation defence placements and as a Fleet picket ship guarding a fleets flanks from attack. Corvettes would have these as wing mates. Not built to look good but built to fight as a team.
I like to view federal and imperial ships in context to each superpowers needs. The federation, the oldest and largest(?) superpower needs to have relatively cheap to mass produce and very heavily armed and armoured ships to defend it's systems, being mostly concentrated around the core world of sol it doesn't need particularly large jump range, it needs to wipe the floor in conflict zones and with pirates. The empire is, well they are busy melting down old iphones to create beautiful ships that make even more beautiful wreckage.

Bought it thanks to this video, had to grind a bit first though, it has 2 small fragment cannons with double shot, 2 medium beam lasers, 2 overcharged medium multi-cannons and 1 overcharged large multi-cannon.
I tore a Type 10 to shreds, it was beautiful.
I also bought a Type 10 because of you and it’s basically an unstoppable Flying Fortress with mining capabilities.
Most of the federal 3 are considerably tougher then folks give them credit for. With a fully upgraded dropship I blasted by way through a Krait on several occasions. I’ve blasted my through krait phantoms, through the odd python even. The key is the biggest turrets you can hang on it and a big ass rail gun

As someone who unabatedly loves the Krait Mk2... This damn thing is the absolute *bane* of my existence. Though with a little help from a HazRes next to a star and some thermal damage, it did force me to join the Quadruple 0 Club and survive 😂 (0% hull, display showing 0:00 oxygen remaining when I passed through the second barrier of the mailslot)
1 federal gunship, a lot of doubleshot fragment cannons, 1 HAZ RES, premium ammo (optional). Interstellar god of destruction.

Thanks. I haven’t spent time in the FGS yet, just DS and FAS. I thought they were fun to fight in but not the best companions for traveling around (like for engineering) with their awful jump range and poor heat management when trying to scoop.

I enjoy all the Core Dynamics Fed ships. Sure they're bricks but I always liked the design(s) of the first 3 (as well as the Corvette). The FGS and FAS remind me of aerial fighter aircraft. FGS is a lot of fun when engineered but I have to say, I really love the FAS. It's been ages since I've flown either but the FAS... speed, maneuverability and a nose that acts as a 3rd large hard point. Good times. Keep up the great videos! o7

stiimuli probably a continuation of those Top Gear equivalents in Elite dangerous he’s done with Yamiks and such, whacky challenges and all picking the ship they believe to be best for the job.
Imagine a couple of them escorting other slow ships, like a convoy, or guarding a few mining freighters. When your enemy has to come to you to get what they want, you don't have to be as fast as them. And there's that fighter bay. It's like it was designed with that in mind

5:24 This is the problem I have with dedicated combat ships. There are some very potent combat ships like the Fer-de-Lance but in most cases you sacrifice so much jump range and loadout flexibility for a tiny bit of extra combat performance. Many multipurpose ships are just so good at combat, there's not much reason to fly an actual combat ship. I love the Chieftain and it's variants. And I love the Federal rank ships. But why on earth would I buy any of these things before I have enough money to buy ships just because I like them? I could buy a Krait Phantom instead. Or a Krait MkII if I have the money. Or an Asp Explorer if I don't.
I love the gunship. I originally bought and engineered one to join Mini on one of his Dakka Dakka fun days, great fun it was too. Since, I have converted it to a missile ship with 4 pack hound missile racks and 3 beam lasers with thermal vent to keep it from overheating, which works really well. In fact until I fire the pack hounds the temperature is at zero % when all the lasers are on target and even after the pack hounds launch it only hits around 35%. Highly recommended for some destructive fun.
I got the Gunship because I wanted a fighter equipped medium combat ship. Passed up the Krait because it would step on my Python's toes. One of my favorite things is that is can equip a class 6 fighter bay, meaning you can have two fighters launched between your one multi crew member and NPC crew. For weapons, multicannons are the big deal, but I do shake it up a little by putting two fragment cannons on the nose hardpoints. Changes up how I fly and it actually handles quite well in knife fighting range.
I don't need my wood chipper to be pretty, I need it to reduce whatever I feed it to tiny tiny pieces, and the FGS does exactly that.
This ship IS fun as hell, even unengineered.

It doesn't have more armor than the Challenger. More base hitpoints, yes, but it comes up short on HP if it trucks a hangar bay, and has a slight edge if the Challenger rocks a C1 FSD interdictor.
It's also much better with 5x Plasma cannons and a couple of C1 utility weapons (usually Feedback rails). The ship's time on target, as you noted is abysmal, and it gets much more mileage out of weapons that don't need lots of facetime to do their work.
I love the look of these ships.
A Space Brick, but theoretically could land on a planet with a Thin atmosphere.

The "mini Vette" requires a little finesse, FA off. If not toggle YAW boost FA off. After that triple OC MC's/Plasma's twin Packhounds Drag/Thermal and twin LR cascade rails. Fixed beam fighter to complete the package. More than enough to stay on track with Chieftains etc. Great work as usual, looking forward to the next!

Possible. But then it would be a ship built for an entirely different game. One where they had fleet mechanics and specializations for that kinda combat. Which seems pretty true of a lot of ships we've worked through lately. Still, it's a video game. It's boring. And they've used the same design for three ships. Just no.

This is like the old Need for Speed car presentations. Absolutely superb. I haven't seen anything like it for a fucking space sim.
i havent flown the gunship, but for me it sounds more like its supposed to be flown with at least 1 wingman and while he/they distract the enemy you hold down the trigger.
Out fitted mine with 4 cannons 2 turret pulse on top and 1 gimballed pulse. Once shields down and all 4 cannons hit enemy ships hull drops 15% to 20% a pull
The Federal Gunship is the proof how effective bricks are at killing ;)
Used to be my main PvE ship until I got the Corvette. Now it's my PvE ship in Colonia. I tried the all-dakka loadout but that wasn't for me. The hardpoints are now: Main: 2 legacy engineered OC MCs and an APA with matched shot speed. Secondary: 2 Pack-Hounds to take down runners. Support: Corrosive Enforcer and a turreted Beam Laser.
The only reason why A-10 should be phased out: a worthy successor is found for it.

I bought my Gunship way back, during a community goal or other that resulted in Federal ships being sold cheaper and with no rank requirement for a week. I've blown up countless pirates in this ship. It's not the best at combat, and it's terrible at everything else. But there's just something about those 7 multicannons, plus a fighter, all firing at your target.

I just bought one of these last night. All I can say is it's a mix of a A-10 and a AC-130 and a Aircraft Carrier. It's amazing at PvE

Styling reminds me of the Kushan corvettes in Homeworld.
Slab sided/THICC, gimbaled guns everywhere, and mostly ignorable.... till you get swarmed by them in a rue awakening that they do exist.

I Have all four Fed. ships and from a vets point of view I understand why they are what they are. The Drops Ships is just that an Armed troop transport. For going from space to surface. Then to provide close fire support for marines as they advance from insertion to first waypoint. They would do SAR work for wounded marines on surface or pilots in space. The Assault ship does the same job as the Drop ship except it works in space sending Marines to enemy space Stations or ships. The Gun Ship Is exactly that! It is a close support ship at objective taking out ground installation defence placements and as a Fleet picket ship guarding a fleets flanks from attack. Corvettes would have these as wing mates. Not built to look good but built to fight as a team.
I like to view federal and imperial ships in context to each superpowers needs. The federation, the oldest and largest(?) superpower needs to have relatively cheap to mass produce and very heavily armed and armoured ships to defend it's systems, being mostly concentrated around the core world of sol it doesn't need particularly large jump range, it needs to wipe the floor in conflict zones and with pirates. The empire is, well they are busy melting down old iphones to create beautiful ships that make even more beautiful wreckage.
It’s also a great for ground attack if that’s something one would find interesting.
